One port, on the canal

Before you board inNuremberg

The ship is not in town. Nuremberg's cruise port sits on the Main-Danube Canal in the southern harbour district, a 15–20 minute taxi from the old town. That makes it the most predictable embarkation on the Danube — and the one where you sleep in the city, not near the quay.

In short

What you need to know first

Every ship uses the Personenschifffahrtshafen at Europakai 10. It's a 1,400 m facility opened in 2016, with ten landing stages, shore power at every berth and roughly 900 ship calls a year. What varies is the berth number, not the address.

It is on the canal, not in the old town. The tourism board quotes a taxi to the centre at 15–20 minutes, about €24; the public-transport route is U1 to Röthenbach, then bus 60.

Nuremberg has its own airport. The U2 subway leaves from directly in front of the terminal and reaches the Hauptbahnhof in about 12 minutes, and Uniworld names NUE for its ship transfers. If you fly into Munich instead, the Lufthansa Express Bus or the two-hourly ÜFEX gets you across.

Five lines start here — Avalon, Uniworld, Riverside, Tauck's Christmas Markets cruise and, from 2027, Celebrity. The old town is a one-night job. The two WWII sites, on opposite sides of the city, are what push it to two.

Book the Memorium Nuremberg Trials before you book anything else. It's closed Tuesdays, Courtroom 600 can be shut for events, and online tickets cannot be cancelled.

The berths

The port, and why it's easy

One cruise port, one address, on every line's list. Here is what it is and what it isn't.

Personenschifffahrtshafen Nürnberg (PSH), Europakai 10, 90455 Nürnberg — berths LP 1–10

The city-run passenger port on the Main-Danube Canal in the southern harbour district. Opened in 2016, 1,400 m long, ten landing stages for up to ten ships at once, with shore power and water at every berth and about 126,000 passengers a year.

Uniworld (S.S. Beatrice, Elisabeth and Emilie at LP 1, LP 5 or LP 9 in December 2026), Lüftner/Amadeus ('Personenschifffahrtshafen/Hafenstrasse, Europakai 10'), Avalon Waterways ('docked on the Main-Danube Canal')

Source

Uniworld lists LP 1, LP 5 and LP 9 for different December 2026 sailings, one still 'TBA'. All-aboard is 9:00 pm — later than its Passau time. The port has had no on-site parking since 10 February 2025 because of a bridge renovation, though buses, taxis and supply vehicles may still enter. Lüftner notes ships occasionally raft alongside each other.

Getting there

Getting to the ship

Two airports are in play. Nuremberg's own is the easy one; Munich works if you accept a two-hour overland leg.

Fly into

Albrecht Dürer Airport Nürnberg NUE

The U2 subway runs from the terminal to the Hauptbahnhof in about 12 minutes; the tourism board gives a taxi from the cruise port to the airport as 20–25 minutes, about €38, and Le Méridien lists the airport at 8 km.

  • Train

    U2 to the Hauptbahnhof

The subway stop is directly in front of the terminal, about 12 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof. A VGN adult single is €3.25, fares valid from 1 January 2024 — so check for a later change.

    Source
  • Taxi

    Straight to the port

Taxis run 24/7 via Taxizentrale Nürnberg (+49 911 19410). The tourism board quotes port to airport at 20–25 minutes, about €38, and port to old town at 15–20 minutes, about €24.

    Source
  • Bus

    Public transport to the quay

The tourism board's route is U1 from the Hauptbahnhof five stops to Röthenbach, then city bus 60 to the harbour. Its timetable link is labelled U2/Röthenbach, so check VGN before you rely on it with luggage.

    Source
  • Line transfer

    From Munich Airport instead

The Lufthansa Express Bus links Munich Airport (stop 13) and Nuremberg Airport (car park P2 by the Mövenpick), timed to Munich flights. Tickets must be pre-booked, and bags are checked at MUC. The ÜFEX/RE 22 airport express runs every two hours from MUC to Nürnberg, about 2.5 hours via Regensburg.

What the lines say about transfers

  • UniworldNames Nuremberg (NUE) for ship transfers on its Vienna–Nuremberg itinerary and lists Europakai berths for its December sailings.
  • Viking River CruisesIncludes embarkation-day transfers when flights are booked through Viking Air — though Viking calls here on its Grand European Tour rather than starting here.
  • Avalon WaterwaysSays its ship is docked on the Main-Danube Canal; its Nuremberg transfer terms aren't published.

The day before

A day in Nuremberg before you sail

The old town is walkable from the station hotels. The two WWII sites are not — they sit on opposite sides of the city, and both need checking before you go.

  1. 01

Kaiserburg, the Imperial Castle above the old town

The tourism board highlights the Deep Well, the Sinwell Tower and the Imperial Castle Museum in the Kemenate, on the rock above the city. It doesn't publish hours or prices, so check before a timed visit.

Documentation Center at the Nazi Party Rally Grounds

Open Mon–Fri 9–18 and Sat–Sun 10–18 at Bayernstraße 110; adults €7.50, free with the NÜRNBERG CARD. The old permanent exhibition has been replaced by an interim show, 'Nuremberg – Site of the Nazi Party Rallies', while a major remodel runs — no end date published.

  3. 03

Memorium Nuremberg Trials and Courtroom 600

Open 9–18 (weekends from 10) from 1 April to 31 October 2026 and 10–18 from 1 November; closed every Tuesday and on 24–25 December. The museum warns Saal 600 can be closed to the public for events, and online tickets carry a 10% fee and cannot be cancelled. Confirm the courtroom is open before you buy.

    Three in a bun

The city's own guide lists 'Drei im Weggla' — three small Rostbratwurst in a bun — as a must. The sausage has held EU-wide protection since 2003, and the Bratwurst Museum at Bratwurstgasse 1 opens Tue–Fri 10–17 and Sat–Sun 10–18, adults €5. Elisen gingerbread is the other one to try.

  5. 05

Germanisches Nationalmuseum, ideally on a Wednesday

Germany's largest museum of German culture, at Kartäusergasse 1, opens Tue–Sun 10–18 and until 20:30 on Wednesdays; adults €10. The Albrecht Dürer House at Albrecht-Dürer-Straße 39 is Tue–Fri 10–17 and Sat–Sun 10–18, adults €7.50.

Follow the Pegnitz through the old town

The city guide suggests walking the river that cuts the old town in two, past the Executioner's House above the water. Flat and short — and the only river you'll see on foot, since your ship is on the canal.

Advent: the Christkindlesmarkt on the Hauptmarkt

Runs 27 November to 24 December 2026, daily 10:00–22:00 (to 14:00 on the 24th). The Christkind opens it with a prologue from the Frauenkirche balcony; the Sister Cities market and the Original Regional stalls close on 23 December.

Things to do in Nuremberg

Three bookable pieces that solve Nuremberg's two real problems: distance and transport.

  • Nazi Party Rally Grounds and Nuremberg Trials history tourThe two WWII sites are far apart and outside the old town; a guided transfer-tour does both in an afternoon.
  • Old-town walking tour with castle and bratwurst tastingCovers the Kaiserburg, the Hauptmarkt and a 'Drei im Weggla' stop before the ship.
  • Private transfer, Munich Airport to NurembergFor guests flying into MUC, a car beats the two-hourly ÜFEX and the Lufthansa bus's pre-booking rules.

Where to stay

Where to sleep

Six hotels, all in the city and none at the port, in our Nuremberg pre-cruise hotels guide. Le Méridien Grand across from the Hauptbahnhof is the logistics pick; the Sheraton Carlton is the full-service one with a pool.

Bahnhofsviertel / Königstraße (south edge of the old town)

Le Méridien Grand sits 'directly opposite the main train station' at 'the entrance of the historical old town'. The U2 to the airport and the U1 toward the port both start at the Hauptbahnhof below it.

Altstadt — Sebald side and the castle quarter

The lanes under the Kaiserburg. Booking.com's Nuremberg listing places Hotel Elch in the castle district near St. Sebald, and the Dürer House and the castle are up here.

Altstadt — around the Hauptmarkt

Hotel Central is described as 'near Hauptmarkt', the square that hosts the Christkindlesmarkt from 27 November to 24 December 2026 — the right base for an Advent sailing.

Calls here mid-cruise

When

The Christkindlesmarkt fills the Hauptmarkt daily 10–22 from 27 November to 24 December 2026, and fills the hotels with it — book early for an Advent sailing. The Documentation Center is under a long remodel with only an interim exhibition, and the Memorium is closed Tuesdays. The DTM and Rock im Park events make the Rally Grounds partly inaccessible on their dates. The port has had no parking since February 2025.

Quick answers

Nuremberg river cruise questions

Where do river cruise ships dock in Nuremberg?

At the city-run Personenschifffahrtshafen on the Main-Danube Canal, Europakai 10, 90455 Nürnberg — ten berths along 1,400 m, opened 2016, about 900 calls a year. Uniworld's 2026 list uses berths LP 1, LP 5 and LP 9 with a 9:00 pm all-aboard. It's not in the old town: a taxi is 15–20 minutes, about €24.

How do I get from the airport to the ship?

The U2 subway runs from the terminal to the Hauptbahnhof in about 12 minutes; from there the tourism board's route is U1 five stops to Röthenbach and bus 60 to the harbour. A taxi from the airport to the port is quoted at 20–25 minutes, about €38, via Taxizentrale +49 911 19410.

Should I fly into Nuremberg or Munich?

Nuremberg, if your routing allows — Uniworld names NUE for its ship transfers. From Munich, the Lufthansa Express Bus links the two airports (pre-booked tickets only, bags checked at MUC) and the ÜFEX/RE 22 airport express runs every two hours to Nürnberg, about 2.5 hours via Regensburg.

Is one night enough in Nuremberg?

The old town, yes — castle, Hauptmarkt, Dürer House and bratwurst are walkable from the station hotels. Add a second night if you want both the Documentation Center (Mon–Fri 9–18, Sat–Sun 10–18) and the Memorium Nuremberg Trials (closed Tuesdays), which sit on opposite sides of the city.

Which lines start their cruises in Nuremberg?

Avalon (Legendary Danube), Uniworld (Vineyards and Palaces, Vienna–Nuremberg), Riverside, Tauck's December Christmas Markets cruise to Vienna, and Celebrity River from 2027. Viking calls here on its Grand European Tour rather than starting here.

Can I store luggage in Nuremberg?

Nothing is published on it. Neither the port page nor the tourism board's 'by ship' page mentions luggage storage. The port says buses, taxis and supply vehicles may still enter the site, but there has been no parking there since 10 February 2025.
