Where the Sava meets the Danube
A river cruise day inBelgrade
Your ship docks on the Sava, not the Danube, and the city climbs away from it. That is why Belgrade is a full day — and on Uniworld, an evening too.
- ~1 kmSava berth to the fortress edge, uphill
- 79 mTemple of Saint Sava, to the cross
- 15,000 m²Mosaic inside St. Sava, finished 2020
- 800 RSDTesla Museum English tour, 2026, cash only
The call
A full day, and the evening question
Belgrade gets a full day on every Lower Danube itinerary. Uniworld goes furthest. It offers a city tour that adds the Royal Compound of the Karađorđević dynasty, a leisurely half-day 'I Bike Belgrade' ride, or a walking tour with free time — and then a private after-hours concert at Kalemegdan Fortress, moved indoors to the National Museum of Serbia on its 30 March and 4 April departures.
Viking's included day is Kalemegdan, or St. Sava and Republic Square. Emerald's is 'Highlights of Belgrade', with cycling as the active option. Avalon and AmaWaterways frame it as a guided capital tour in gentle, regular and active versions.
The ship uses the passenger dock of the Port of Belgrade on the Sava. The Tourist Organization of Belgrade says passengers walk a narrow pier near the building locals call Beton Hala; CruiseMapper places it on the waterfront around Karađorđeva Street, below Kalemegdan, with about 1 km and a climb to the fortress edge, 1.5 km to Knez Mihailova and 2 km to Republic Square. Berth assignments vary.
Whether the ship stays the night goes unstated. Uniworld's concert means a late departure at minimum. Everyone else should confirm the all-aboard before booking a kafana table.
From the ship: Partly — the fortress edge is about 1 km from the Sava berth but it is a climb from river level, Knez Mihailova is roughly 1.5 km, and St. Sava is several kilometres south, so count on a taxi or the coach for the temple.
In town
The city above the dock
Kalemegdan and the Belgrade Fortress
The fortress park above the Sava–Danube confluence is free to enter and mostly open round the clock. The fortress museum runs about 10:00–17:00 and some sections charge 200–300 RSD. CruiseMapper suggests 3–4 hours for the fortress, the park, Knez Mihailova and Republic Square together. That is most of a port day.
SourceTemple of Saint Sava
79 metres to the cross, with a 4,000-ton dome lifted into place in 1989 and about 15,000 m² of mosaic inside, finished in 2020; the central Ascension alone covers around 1,230 m². It stands several kilometres south of the waterfront — a taxi or a tour, not a walk. Entry is free. Cover shoulders and knees.
SourceKnez Mihailova
The pedestrian spine from Kalemegdan to Terazije, lined with 19th-century buildings and cafés. About 1.5 km from the ship, and the natural route up from the river.
SourceSkadarlija
The 400-metre cobbled bohemian street a few minutes east of Republic Square. Kafanas such as Tri Šešira, there since 1864, and Dva Jelena, founded 1832, put musicians at your table.
SourceNikola Tesla Museum
In the same part of central Belgrade as St. Sava. A guided English tour was 800 RSD in 2026, cash only, and booking ahead in peak season is advised.
SourceZemun and the Gardoš Tower
The old town on the Danube about 7 km out, 20–30 minutes by taxi, with a riverside promenade and a tower climb of slopes and steps for around 200 RSD.

Beyond the town
Further than the walk
The Royal Compound
Uniworld's city tour is the only included option that reaches the Karađorđević palace grounds — the line's own 'Belgrade City Tour with Visit to the Royal Grounds of Karadjordjevic Dynasty Palace'.
SourceEastern Serbia
Viator lists a 'Gems of Eastern Serbia' day trip from Belgrade. It is a long day and only fits if your ship overnights, which no line confirms — ask before you book.
SourceNovi Sad, by bike
Emerald's Balkan itinerary has guests cycle in both Belgrade and Novi Sad. Novi Sad is a separate call on most Lower Danube sailings, not an excursion from here.

Kafana rules
A kafana night in Skadarlija
Grilled meats and tableside folk music at Tri Šešira or Dva Jelena, with mains around 1,000–2,000 RSD. Book ahead at weekends.
SourceBoemski ćevap
Zavičaj Skadarlija's 'bohemian' ćevapi are the dish In Your Pocket singles out on the street.
SourceRakija
The Balkan fruit brandy. Ask for the local one. It arrives before, with or after the meal, and sometimes all three.

When
The Lower Danube is mostly sold late spring through early autumn, though AmaWaterways' Gems of Southeast Europe also sails in November and December. Summer is hot and Kalemegdan is largely shadeless; Ada Ciganlija's lake reaches about 26°C in July–August if a swim appeals. Uniworld moves its evening concert indoors to the National Museum on the 30 March and 4 April departures.

Quick answers
Belgrade on a river cruise: questions
Where does the ship dock in Belgrade?
On the Sava, at the passenger dock below Kalemegdan near Beton Hala — not on the Danube. The fortress is about 1 km uphill. Knez Mihailova is about 1.5 km.
Can I walk to the Temple of Saint Sava?
Not comfortably. It is several kilometres south of the river, every line tour stops there, and a taxi is quick. Entry is free, and the 15,000 m² of mosaic was completed in 2020.
Is there a night in Belgrade?
Uniworld stages a private after-hours concert at Kalemegdan, so its ship is in port into the evening. No line confirms an overnight — ask before you book a late dinner in Skadarlija.
Which included tour should I choose?
On Uniworld, the bike ride is the way to see the river districts, and the city tour is the only one that reaches the Royal Compound. Walkers who want free time should take the walking-tour option and head for Skadarlija.
