What to settle before you book a Swiss rail trip
You’ve seen the red train on the white viaduct. These six facts decide how you’ll actually ride it.
Four panoramic trains, four different days
Each train is a full day of its own, or most of one. Choose two at most for a first trip, then build the hotels around them.
The coast-to-coast of the Alps
Zermatt to St. Moritz in about eight hours, over the Oberalp Pass and through the Rhine Gorge. The 2nd-class ticket costs CHF 166 and 1st class CHF 284, plus a mandatory seat reservation of CHF 54.
- Excellence Class: CHF 590 on top of a 1st-class ticket, CHF 874 in all, with a five-course menu, wine, the Glacier Bar and a guaranteed window
- Railbookers puts Excellence at 20 passengers; meals in 1st and 2nd class are ordered and paid at your seat
- Seats open 93 days out; no skis, golf bags or bikes
Over the Bernina Pass to Italy
About four hours and 144 km from Chur to Tirano on the Albula and Bernina lines, a UNESCO site since 2008, with 196 bridges and 55 tunnels. Seat61 lists the ticket at CHF 96 in 2nd class and CHF 164 in 1st.
- Reservation: CHF 36 from May 2 to October 25, 2026, CHF 32 otherwise (Seat61)
- Two trains a day in summer, one in winter; the line passes Lago Bianco at 2,253 m
- RhB’s regional trains run the same line with windows that open, and a CHF 5 optional seat
The train that changes gauge
Montreux to Interlaken Ost with no change of trains since December 2022. At Zweisimmen the train adjusts its wheels from meter gauge to standard gauge, which solved a gap that had blocked a through train for over a century.
- Up to four trains a day, via Gstaad and Château-d’Oex
- Prestige class: seats raised 40 cm that turn to face the direction of travel; reservation compulsory
- Covered by the pass; reservations are recommended in 1st and 2nd class and cost extra
Half lake steamer, half mountain line
A boat across Lake Lucerne to Flüelen, then a panoramic train south to Lugano. In 2026 it ran daily for the first time, April 18 to October 18.
- Boat leaves Lucerne at 11:12, reaches Flüelen at 13:55; train leaves 14:09, reaches Lugano at 16:41
- First class is mandatory on the train
- The operator’s 2026 sales manual doesn’t list a price; ask us for your date

The Swiss Travel Pass: what CHF 254 buys
A pass feels like a free ride. It pays only if you ride most days.
The pass gives you unlimited trains, buses and boats across the country, local transport in more than 90 towns and free entry to more than 500 museums, per Switzerland Tourism. Rigi, Stanserhorn and Stoos are free; many other mountain railways are up to 50% off.
It’s sold only to people who live outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Under-25s pay 30% less. With the free Swiss Family Card, children 6 to 15 ride free with a parent who holds a pass, and under-6s ride free anyway.
The alternative is the Half Fare Card: CHF 150 for a month of half-price tickets, including panoramic trains and mountain railways. It wins when you ride a few big trains and spend the other days on foot.
Neither card buys you a panoramic seat. Budget the reservations separately, every time.
| Days (2026) | 2nd class | 1st class | Flex, 2nd | Flex, 1st |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | CHF 254 | CHF 405 | CHF 289 | CHF 461 |
| 4 | CHF 309 | CHF 492 | CHF 349 | CHF 555 |
| 6 | CHF 399 | CHF 634 | CHF 424 | CHF 674 |
| 8 | CHF 439 | CHF 697 | CHF 459 | CHF 729 |
| 15 | CHF 499 | CHF 787 | CHF 519 | CHF 819 |
Flex passes let you pick your travel days within one month, for CHF 20–40 more in 2nd class. Prices valid to December 31, 2026; the 2027 list wasn’t out when we checked.
Will the pass pay for itself on your trip?
Type in what you actually plan to ride. The tool prices it three ways and shows the cheapest; the reservations land in every column.
Pass or tickets?
Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card or full fare
Our starting figures are the Glacier Express and Bernina Express tickets plus their seat reservations. Add your other trains at full fare and change anything you like.
Pass prices are SBB’s 2026 adult prices, valid to December 31, 2026; Swiss fares rise about 3.6% on average in December 2026, so ask us for the 2027 figure. Starting tickets: Glacier Express CHF 166 (1st CHF 284) and Bernina Express Chur–Tirano CHF 96 (1st CHF 164, per Seat61). Reservations: Glacier CHF 54 plus Bernina CHF 36 in high season. Mountain trips assume 50% off with either card; Switzerland Tourism says “up to 50%”. Jungfraujoch figures are a reseller’s 2027 prices: CHF 270.40 full, 183.20 with the pass, 135.20 with the Half Fare Card, plus a CHF 10 seat. Dollars are rough, at about $1.24 per franc.
Summer for the meadows, winter for the snow, never mid-November
The railways publish seasons and prices, not crowd counts, so that’s what we show. The one window to avoid is the Glacier Express’s autumn break.
Spring: the trains wake up
The Gotthard Panorama Express opened its 2026 season on April 18. Trafalgar’s Contrasts of Switzerland starts its 2027 departures on April 4, and Collette’s group trip runs in May.
- Bernina reservations rise to high-season price on May 2
- Spring 2027 only: the Rhine Gorge on the Glacier Express runs by bus April 17 to May 2
- Jungfraujoch seat reservations become mandatory May 1
Summer: everything runs, and fills
Railbookers points to June through September for wildflowers and alpine hikes. Every panoramic train runs, the Jungfraujoch’s higher May–October fares apply, and the Good Morning ticket offers an early-train discount.
- Book the Glacier Express the day seats open, 93 days out
- The Good Morning ticket covers the 07:04 and 07:34 trains from Interlaken Ost
- Two Bernina Expresses a day
Autumn: golden larches, then a pause
Railbookers names late September and October for golden larches and fewer crowds. The Glacier Express stops on October 11, 2026, and the Gotthard Panorama on October 18.
- Bernina reservations drop to low season after October 25
- Plan Glacier days before mid-October
- GoldenPass and Bernina keep running
Winter: snow on the viaducts
The Glacier Express returns on December 5, 2026, on a winter timetable of up to two trains a day from Zermatt. The Bernina runs one train a day each way.
- Reservations for December onward opened in mid-October
- Jungfraujoch fares are lower outside May–October
- Globus sells an 8-day Swiss Train Escape for winter 2026–27 from $1,999 (reseller listing)
Who sells Switzerland by train for 2027
Seven ways to buy the same mountains. The difference is how many panoramic trains are actually in the price.
Booking it all yourself is straightforward here: the panoramic seats sell online and one pass covers the rest. A tour or package earns its fee by holding the panoramic seats, carrying the bags and picking hotels near the platforms.
Trafalgar runs the most trains for the money.
Its 8-day Contrasts of Switzerland rides the Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt on day 3 and the GoldenPass route from Geneva to Lucerne on day 6, from $4,725 for 2027, with groups averaging 45.
Trafalgar’s 9-day Best of Switzerland is mostly coach, with one Rhaetian Railway ride to Poschiavo, from $3,578 on a sale date.
Globus keeps it small. Hidden Gems of Switzerland by Train runs 8 days from Zurich with the Gotthard Panorama and Bernina Expresses, 18 guests at most, $4,599 on August 20, 2027. A reseller lists its 8-day Swiss Splendors by Train, Geneva to Zurich, from $4,859.
Collette’s 10-day Alpine Lakes & Scenic Trains starts on Lake Maggiore, then rides the Glacier Express from Zermatt and the Bernina Express to Le Prese. A May 2027 group flyer prices it at about $6,000–6,350 with flights from Detroit; it’s rated Level 2, with 2–3 miles of walking a day.
Tauck’s 11-day Switzerland: Europe’s Crown Jewel runs only as Small or Even Smaller Group, from $12,490, with palace hotels, the Gornergrat and the Jungfraujoch.
Rick Steves’ 12-day Best of Switzerland, from $5,745 plus air, travels by bus, boat and cable car, with two nights in Mürren and all tips included. It’s a mountain tour, not a train tour; the tour page doesn’t name a panoramic train.
Railbookers sells the self-guided version: confirmed Glacier Express seats, hotels a short walk from the stations and transfers between them, built to your dates. It doesn’t publish set prices, so ask us for a quote.

Matcher
Which Swiss rail trip fits you?
Four taps. We rank nine real ways to do it on who plans, which trains, budget and group size.
Ride with a daypack; send the suitcase
You’ll change trains with your own hands. Make it a light bag, not a heavy one.
Panoramic cars have limited rack space, and the Glacier Express won’t take skis, golf bags or bikes. Swiss travelers solve it with the railway’s own forwarding service.
Station to station: CHF 12 per bag, up to 23 kg. Drop it off today, collect it the day after tomorrow, with a valid ticket or pass for the route. Storage is free on arrival day and four more.
Door to door: CHF 50 per order plus CHF 12 per bag, collected day 1 and delivered day 3. An express option, CHF 50 more, delivers the same evening in selected places. Order by noon the day before.
On escorted tours the company moves your bags; Tauck allows one checked suitcase of up to 50 lb. Excellence Class on the Glacier Express carries luggage to and from the platform.
Before you ride
A day aboard: Glacier Express Excellence Class, east to west
If you ride one train in Switzerland in style, make it this one. Here’s how the day runs.
Leave St. Moritz
The Excellence Class train pulls out of St. Moritz; your concierge has your guaranteed window seat ready.
Champagne and the Albula
Champagne and an aperitif come first, as the line drops through the UNESCO-listed Albula section toward Chur.
Five courses at the window
A five-course menu with matched wines, served at your seat while the train climbs toward the Oberalp Pass.
The Glacier Bar
The bar car is yours to use as the train comes down toward Brig and the Rhône valley.
Arrive Zermatt
Staff carry your luggage off to the platform, and the day ends under the Matterhorn.
Departure, arrival and the service list from the Glacier Express’s Excellence Class page. Meal timing is our sketch of the day, not a published schedule.
Passports, francs, tips and the time difference
The paperwork is light for Americans. The money is where people get surprised.
Passport. No visa under 90 days. The State Department’s Switzerland page says your passport should be valid at least six months from entry, and that Switzerland strictly enforces it.
Its advisory is Level 1, “Exercise normal precautions” (August 14, 2026). The EU’s ETIAS isn’t live and has no announced start date; the Entry/Exit System, which takes fingerprints and a photo at the border, has been fully running since April 10, 2026.
Money. Switzerland uses the Swiss franc. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and many places take euros with change in francs, per Switzerland Tourism.
Tips. Optional in Switzerland; many restaurants expect about 10% or a rounded-up bill.
On tours, Trafalgar suggests $5–7 a day for the tour director and $3–5 for the driver. Rick Steves includes all tips. Tauck leaves them to you.
Flights and time. Most rail tours start in Zurich; Collette’s starts in Milan. Fly in the day before your first train; Switzerland runs six hours ahead of Florida and seven ahead of Texas.
Getting help. Accessibility differs train by train and isn’t laid out on the fare pages. Ask us and we’ll check your departures with the railway.
Before you fly
Deposits and cancellation run by company: Tauck takes $600 for Switzerland with final payment at 90 days; Rick Steves $400 and 60 days; Globus $250 and 60 days. Read our guide to booking windows and insurance before you pay.
Who should take Switzerland by train
Pick this if
- You want the Glacier Express done right: Trafalgar Contrasts, Collette, or Excellence Class on your own
- You want small groups and the Bernina: Globus Hidden Gems by Train
- You want palace hotels and no logistics at all: Tauck
- You’re comfortable on trains and want your own pace: Railbookers, or a pass and your own hotels
- You’re traveling with children 6–15: the free Swiss Family Card makes DIY rail cheap
Look elsewhere if
- You want trains as plain transport; the panoramic ones are slow by design, eight hours for the Glacier Express
- You’re going mid-October to early December and the Glacier Express is the point
- You can’t manage stairs into rail cars with a bag; pick a coach tour that handles bags
- You want a solo room without a supplement; Rick Steves charges $720 and Globus has no room share
- You’d rather see the Alps from a river ship; see our river cruise guide
Our take
Few countries bring a self-planned rail trip this close to the ease of a tour. The pass is simple, the seats book online and the railway will move your suitcase for you.
Pay a tour company for the hard parts: guaranteed panoramic seats in summer, hotels next to the station, and someone else carrying the bags. For a first trip, Trafalgar’s Contrasts of Switzerland and Globus’s Hidden Gems by Train put the most famous trains in the price.

What Swiss rail first-timers ask us
Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it?
It depends on how many full-fare trips you take. A 3-day pass costs CHF 254 in 2nd class and CHF 405 in 1st (2026 prices, valid to December 31, 2026). It covers the Glacier Express ticket (CHF 166 in 2nd class) but not its CHF 54 seat reservation. If you take one panoramic train and a few short hops, the CHF 150 Half Fare Card often wins. Run your own trips through the calculator on this page.
Does the Swiss Travel Pass cover the Glacier Express?
It covers the ticket, not the seat. The Glacier Express reservation is mandatory and costs CHF 54 on top; Excellence Class costs CHF 590 on top of a 1st-class ticket. The Bernina Express works the same way, with a reservation of CHF 36 in high season and CHF 32 in low season, per Seat61.
How long is the Glacier Express, and when does it run?
About eight hours between Zermatt and St. Moritz. It doesn’t run between October 11 and December 4, 2026, and seats open 93 days before travel. In spring 2027 the Rhine Gorge section between Chur and Disentis closes April 17 to May 2 for construction, with a replacement bus.
Glacier Express or Bernina Express?
The Glacier Express is the long one: eight hours across the country, Zermatt to St. Moritz. The Bernina Express runs about four hours from Chur over the Bernina Pass to Tirano in Italy, on a UNESCO-listed line with 196 bridges and 55 tunnels. If you only have one day, the Bernina gives you more drama per hour.
How much is the Jungfraujoch with a Swiss Travel Pass?
A Swiss reseller lists the 2027 return from Interlaken Ost at CHF 183.20 with the pass between May and October, against CHF 270.40 at full fare and CHF 135.20 with the Half Fare Card. Seat reservations cost CHF 10 and are mandatory from May through October.
Can I send my luggage ahead on Swiss trains?
Yes. SBB forwards bags station to station for CHF 12 per item: drop it off today, collect it the day after tomorrow. You need a valid ticket or pass for the route, and each bag can weigh up to 23 kg. Door to door costs CHF 50 per order plus CHF 12 per bag.
Do US citizens need anything to visit Switzerland?
No visa for stays under 90 days. The State Department’s Switzerland page says your passport should be valid at least six months from entry and that Switzerland strictly enforces it. Its advisory is Level 1, “Exercise normal precautions” (August 14, 2026). The EU’s ETIAS isn’t live, and no start date had been announced as of late October 2026.
Which tour company runs the best Swiss train tour?
For the most panoramic trains in one escorted week, Trafalgar’s 8-day Contrasts of Switzerland (Glacier Express plus the GoldenPass route, from $4,725 for 2027) and Globus’s 8-day Hidden Gems of Switzerland by Train (Gotthard Panorama and Bernina, 18 guests at most, $4,599 on an August 2027 date). Tauck is the luxury pick at $12,490 for 11 days. Rick Steves travels mostly by bus and boat.
