Gate 1’s fares, groups and deadlines
You’ve probably seen a Gate 1 fare that looked too low next to Globus or Trafalgar. Here’s what sits behind it.
The first Gate 1 tour we’d book: Enchanting Italy
One tour shows what Gate 1 does well: a full Italy loop, decent hotels and a fare most rivals can’t match.
You want the classic Venice, Florence and Rome loop without paying mid-market rates. That’s the trip Gate 1 builds its reputation on.
9 Day Enchanting Italy is a Classic tour from $2,549 per person land only for 2027, or from about $3,629 with the flight from New York. It runs seven hotel nights, includes 10 meals (7 breakfasts, 3 dinners) and uses first-class hotels such as NH Collection Roma Centro and Starhotels Michelangelo in Florence.
The fine print is generous for the price. Porterage, Italian city hotel taxes, Accademia and Vatican tickets, and tips for local guides and wait staff are all in the fare.
- Venice2 nightsA Murano glassblowing visit and a walking tour to St. Mark’s Square.
- Tuscany and Pisadrive dayA farm wine tasting, then the Piazza dei Miracoli on the way to Florence.
- Florence2 nightsA walking tour, Accademia tickets, and a Tuscan dinner with wine and entertainment.
- Assisiday stopA walking tour of the hill town before the drive south.
- Rome3 nightsThe Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, the Roman Forum, and a dinner with wine and music.
Stops, nights and inclusions from Gate 1’s 2027 tour page. Day 1 is the overnight flight, so “9 days” means 7 nights in hotels. Gate 1 sells an 11-day version with two nights in Sorrento from about $700 more.
Check the hotel line for your departure day before you pay. The Tuesday and Friday dates list hotels in Venice itself; the Sunday date uses the Hyatt Centric on Murano, a boat ride from St. Mark’s.
Six tiers under one name
The name on the brochure is the same, but the tier decides the hotel, the meals and the group size. Read the label before the price.
Classic escorted tours
Gate 1’s main line: first-class, centrally located hotels, several included meals and a mix of sightseeing and free time.
- 9 Day Enchanting Italy: from $2,549 land only (2027)
- 10 Day Classic Ireland: from $2,399, or $3,379 with air
- “Kaleidoscope” tours go deeper, like 12 Day Kaleidoscope of Ireland
Value (“Essential”) tours
The cheapest tier. Gate 1 says these use hotels that are typically basic 3-star properties in less convenient areas, with more free time.
- 8 Day Essential Ireland: from $1,199 land, breakfasts only
- 8 Day Essential Central Europe: from $1,219 land
- Expect to pay for most dinners and the optional tours
Affordable tours
Classic-standard tours run in the quieter months, when fewer crowds and lower hotel rates bring the fare down.
- 10 Day Affordable Italy with Pompeii: $2,649 land on Jan 18, 2027
- Some dates use hotels on Murano or the Lido, not central Venice
- Good for flexible dates and mild-weather sightseeing
Discovery small groups
Gate 1’s small-group brand, with boutique or first-class hotels and more meals. The price roughly doubles per day.
- 9 Day Canary Islands Discovery: from $3,889 land, 14 meals
- 11 Day Irish Culture: from $4,539 land
- Minimum age 12; Walking & Hiking groups cap at 20
Independent packages
City stays, multi-city trips, fly-and-drive and rail packages without a Tour Manager. Optional tours are usually available.
- 8 Day Ireland Fly & Drive: Dublin, Killarney, Galway
- Sold air-inclusive only on the Ireland ones we checked
- Stay & Explore tours sit between: one base, escorted day trips
River cruises
Gate 1 sells its European river cruises as exclusive charters, with a Tour Manager on board and wine and beer at lunch and dinner.
- 9 Day Danube River Cruise: from $2,249, or $3,349 with air
- Ships named for 2027: Monarch Queen or Monarch Baroness
- Minimum age 16; stricter credit if you cancel under CFAR
What the fare covers on a Classic tour
Gate 1 includes more of the small stuff than its price suggests. The big gaps are dinners and two tips.

| Hotels | Included | First class on Classic; basic 3-star on Value tours |

Gate 1 publishes air-inclusive fares from a stated gateway, usually New York. Other airports can cost more, and checked bags beyond the airline’s allowance are extra.
What Gate 1 costs per day, next to its rivals
Gate 1 starts lower than almost anyone on a like-for-like route. Its day count flatters it a little, so compare nights, not days.
Our arithmetic on each operator’s own 2027 from-prices, per person sharing. Gate 1 counts the outbound flight as Day 1, so its cost per hotel night runs higher: Enchanting Italy is about $364 a night over 7 nights.
All-in math
What your Gate 1 tour really costs
Start with the fare from your quote. Enchanting Italy is filled in. Gate 1 sends its tip amounts with your documents, so our starting tip figures use Trafalgar’s published guidance; change them.
Enchanting Italy: $2,549 land only, single supplement $1,000 (2027). The two optionals Gate 1 lists total $124. If you buy Gate 1’s air, use the air-and-land fare instead. Insurance and extra hotel nights aren’t included.
Gate 1 against Cosmos, Trafalgar Saver and Globus
Cosmos is the closest match on price. Trafalgar’s Saver tier and Globus sit either side, and each wins on something different.
Matcher
Gate 1, or a rival?
Four taps. We rank Gate 1’s tiers against the budget brands on our site.
Read the full rival guides before you decide: Cosmos, Trafalgar Saver (formerly Costsaver), Globus and Trafalgar. Our Cosmos vs. Costsaver showdown covers the two cheapest names Gate 1 meets most often.
Traveling alone with Gate 1
Gate 1’s supplements are lower than many in dollars. They’re also fixed on the date table, and there’s no roommate match to dodge one.
You’ll see the single supplement on the date table, as a flat dollar figure. For 2027 it’s $500 on Essential Ireland, $550 on Canary Islands Discovery, $800 on Affordable Italy and $1,000 on Enchanting Italy.
Gate 1 publishes no roommate-matching program. If you want to pay the twin price, Trafalgar’s same-sex room share is the one to compare.
Sales sometimes help. A UK and Ireland flash sale that ended March 1, 2026 took 25% off the land price for single or triple bookings.
One rule bites couples. If your roommate cancels, you owe the single supplement.
Before a solo traveler pays the deposit
The $300 deposit and the 90-day cliff
Gate 1 is relaxed until 90 days and strict after it. At 30 days out, a Cosmos traveler loses half; a Gate 1 traveler loses 90%.
The deposit is $300 per person on most tours. Some trips take more: $500 for Australia, New Zealand and several cruises, $800 for Uganda and $1,500 for Rwanda.
Final payment is due 90 days out, or 120 for Tibet and some cruises. Instant Purchase air and packages are paid in full the day you book.
Changes before final payment cost $50 per person. After that, a change counts as a cancellation.
Gate 1’s Travel Protection can be bought any time before final payment. Add Cancel for Any Reason with it and you can cancel up to 72 hours before departure for a credit, not cash: the trip cost less the deposit and fees on tours, but only 50% on river and sea cruises. Credits last two years.
Cancellation timeline
Slide to the day you might cancel
Gate 1’s standard schedule next to Cosmos’s, both without travel protection.
Gate 1 trips with a $500 deposit (Australia, New Zealand, Norway cruises and others) run 40%, 70%, then 100%; Antarctica and Galápagos cruises start charging at 120 days. Bars show the fee as a rough share of the price.
A day in Florence, and how much you’ll walk
Gate 1 tours move at a brisk middle pace. The walking rating on each page is worth reading twice.
Every Gate 1 tour page states the walking. Enchanting Italy says to expect 3 to 4 hours on sightseeing days, with steps, slopes and cobblestones, and Gate 1 doesn’t recommend it if walking is hard for you.
Value tours like Essential Ireland are lighter, at 1 to 2 hours a day. Canary Islands Discovery matches Italy’s 3 to 4 hours and adds the cable car up Mount Teide, at 12,188 feet.
The pace is brisk on Classic tours. Enchanting Italy changes hotel every two or three nights, and two travel days stop at Pisa and Assisi on the way.
Florence walking tour

The Accademia Gallery
Tickets are included, so no queue to fight for Michelangelo’s David.
Free time
Gate 1 lists no optional tour this day; the city is yours.

Included, with wine and entertainment.
Bags, ages, mobility and who you’re booking with
The tour page sells the sights. These are the rules you’ll find in the terms.
Who runs it. Gate 1 was founded in 1981 by a former tour guide and is based in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. It started with Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Greece and Turkey and now sells trips on all seven continents. It doesn’t publish its ownership; ask us if that matters to you.
Luggage. One suitcase and one carry-on on escorted tours. Each extra piece costs $100, and your airline’s limits (often 62 linear inches and 50 pounds) still apply.
Children. Minimum ages are 7 on Family tours, 8 on escorted tours, 12 on Discovery, and 16 on river cruises and walking tours. Under-18s travel with an adult.
Mobility. Gate 1’s terms are blunt: wheelchairs, walkers and scooters aren’t accommodated on international tours, and staff won’t help with walking or boarding. If you need help, bring a companion who can give it.
Booking through us. Gate 1’s terms let you book through a travel agent, and it pays agents a commission. You pay us nothing extra. We’ll check your hotel line, price the air from your airport and line Gate 1 up against Cosmos or Trafalgar on your dates.
The one deadline to diary
Gate 1’s Travel Protection has to be bought before final payment at 90 days, and you must be medically able to travel on the day you pay for it. Decide when you book, not when you get sick.
Book Gate 1 for the fare; skip it if you might cancel late
Book it if
- You want the lowest escorted fare on a classic route, with the flight bundled in
- You’d rather Gate 1 handle porterage, city taxes and local-guide tips
- You want a small group without paying Globus prices; Discovery caps at 22
- You’re fine with a full coach and a brisk pace
- Your dates are firm, or you’ll buy Travel Protection with Cancel for Any Reason
Look elsewhere if
- You might cancel within 30 days; 90% is a steep fee
- You’re solo and want a roommate match; look at Trafalgar Saver
- You use a wheelchair or walker on an international trip
- You want central hotels on the cheapest tier; Value tours often trade location for price
- You want most dinners in the fare; a river cruise or Tauck includes more
Our take
Gate 1 folds more into a budget fare than the headline suggests. Porterage, city taxes and local-guide tips are in, and the air-inclusive fare saves you a separate flight hunt.
The trade is in the terms. Fees jump to 50% at 90 days and 90% at 30 days, which is harsher than Cosmos or Globus, and there’s no roommate matching for solos.
We’d book a Classic tour, not a Value one, for a first trip; the hotel location difference is real. Then we’d price Cosmos on the same route, because the gap can shrink once you compare hotel nights instead of days.
Decide on Travel Protection the day you book, and check the hotel list for your exact date.

What travelers ask us about Gate 1
Is Gate 1 Travel a good company for a first escorted tour?
For a budget-minded first trip, yes. A Classic tour like 9 Day Enchanting Italy (from $2,549 land only for 2027) uses first-class hotels, includes porterage and tips for local guides and wait staff, and comes with a Tour Manager. Choose the Classic tier over Value if hotel location matters to you.
How big are Gate 1 tour groups?
Gate 1 says its escorted coach tours typically carry no more than 42 travelers. Discovery small-group tours cap at 22, and Walking & Hiking tours at 20.
Does the Gate 1 price include airfare?
Most tours show two prices: land only, and air and land from a US gateway such as New York. The air price includes airfare, fuel surcharges and airport taxes. Arrival and departure transfers are included only if you book Gate 1’s air.
What is Gate 1’s cancellation policy?
On standard tours you lose the $300 deposit up to 91 days out. From 90 to 31 days the fee is 50% of the price, from 30 to 2 days it’s 90%, and the last day is 100%. Some destinations and cruises use stricter schedules.
Are tips included on Gate 1 tours?
Partly. Packages include tips for porters, wait staff and local guides on included services. Tips for your Tour Manager and driver are not included; Gate 1 sends its suggested amounts with your final documents.
Does Gate 1 charge a single supplement?
Yes, a flat dollar amount shown on each tour’s date table: $500 on 8 Day Essential Ireland and $1,000 on 9 Day Enchanting Italy for 2027. Gate 1 publishes no roommate-matching program.
Can a travel advisor book Gate 1?
Yes. Gate 1’s terms let you book online, by phone or through your travel agent. Seabound Journeys can book it at no extra cost to you and compare it with Cosmos, Trafalgar and Globus on the same route.
