Four questions that decide whether a tour suits you
You’ve done the big trips before, or you’ve waited years to do them. Either way, these four answers matter more than the brochure photos.
How hard each operator’s gentlest tour really is
Every company describes its easiest trip differently. This is what each one actually puts in writing.
| Operator | Pace scale | Gentlest level, in its words | Luggage | Mobility rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trafalgar | Leisurely, Balanced, Dynamic | Leisurely: undefined; relaxed-pace tours add later mornings and extra nights | One suitcase per person at each hotel (2022 conditions) | Attest you’re fit; access not guaranteed abroad |
| Globus | None | Not rated; terms warn of extended walking and standing | Hotel porterage for one bag (FAQ) | Abroad, steps and ramps without a wheelchair or walker |
| Cosmos | None | Not rated | Porterage not included on most tours | Ask before booking |
| Collette | 1–4 | Level 1: up to 60 minutes of walking at a time, gentle stairs | Ask for your tour | Many tours offer options for limited mobility |
| Tauck | Activity 1–4, Pace 1–4 | Activity 1: about an hour of walking | Luggage handling included | No personal assistance; able companion |
| Road Scholar | 4 standard levels | Easy Going: “keep walking to a minimum and avoid stairs” | Ask for your program | Ask for your program |
| O.A.T. | 1–5, named | Moderately Easy still asks about 3 miles unassisted | Porters for one bag, not in baggage claim | Walkers only with an assisting companion (Dalmatian Coast) |
| Rick Steves | One standard | 2 to 8 miles a day, up to four hours on your feet | Roll your own up to 15 minutes, up stairs | Able companion; guides can’t assist |
Labels don’t travel
Trafalgar’s Leisurely and O.A.T.’s Moderately Easy sound alike and ask very different things. Read each tour’s miles, stairs and bag rules, and our pace and walking guide lines up all eight scales.
Formats built for an easier day
Some tours are designed around fewer packing days and later mornings. Tap a format to see what it promises.
Trafalgar Easy Pace and relaxed-pace tours
Trafalgar’s relaxed-pace tours promise “leisurely starts with later mornings” and extra nights in each destination. Easy Pace Italy runs 10 days with three nights each in Rome, Florence and Venice.
- Labeled “Leisurely Itinerary” on the tour page
- 2027 dates from about $4,850 (June 6) to $5,595 (May 2)
- Easy Pace Spain runs on the same idea
Collette Spotlights
Collette’s Spotlights tours are shorter, relaxed stays based in a single hotel in one city.
- Collette’s Level 1 caps walking at about 60 minutes at a time
- Explorations small groups average nearly three nights per location
- Tell Collette of special requirements before booking
River cruises
The ship moves; you don’t pack. Tauck rates its Blue Danube cruise Activity 2, Pace 3, the gentlest walking score of the Tauck trips we checked.
- Gangways can be steep: O.A.T. warns its Dalmatian small ship’s gangplank may be, with no elevators aboard
- Ask how far the ship docks from each town center
- Read our river cruise guide for the lines compared
Road Scholar
Road Scholar grades programs from Easy Going (“Let’s keep walking to a minimum and avoid stairs when we can”) through On Your Feet and Keep The Pace to Let’s Go.
- Some programs offer Choose Your Pace, two activity levels on one trip
- Separate Outdoor levels for hiking and cycling programs
- Learning-focused, with lectures and expert guides
Overseas Adventure Travel
O.A.T. sells to active travelers 50 and over, which isn’t the same as gentle. Every trip we read asks you to walk about 3 miles unassisted.
- Dalmatian Coast: 6 to 8 hours of activity a day, up to 300 stairs at Plitvice
- More and less strenuous paths offered at Plitvice
- An optional tour you skip becomes free time
Scenic rail
A rail journey brings the scenery to your seat. Walking is mostly stations, platforms and short stops.
- Rocky Mountaineer and Swiss panoramic trains are in our scenic rail guide
- Ask about station stairs and hotel transfers
Count the hotels, then count the nights
Two tours with the same walking can feel very different by day six. For many travelers, the packing is the tiring part.
Our arithmetic on each itinerary’s published overnights. Amazing Britain carries a “Leisurely” label, which is why we count beds and not labels.
A one-night stop means bags out early, a coach day and a new room to learn. Do that six times in nine nights and the walking stops being the hard part.
The fix is simple. Divide the nights by the hotels on the day-by-day itinerary, and look for two- and three-night stops.
Who carries the suitcase, operator by operator
The heaviest moment on a tour is often a cobbled street between the coach and the hotel door.
| Operator | At hotels | Your part |
|---|---|---|
| Tauck | Luggage handling included | Ask the bag limit for your trip |
| Globus | One bag, hotel porterage (FAQ) | Bag limit 50 lb and 30 × 21 × 11 in. |
| Trafalgar | One suitcase per person (2022 conditions) | A day bag you carry |
| Adventures by Disney | Luggage service included | Ask about bag limits |
| O.A.T. | One bag by porters | Baggage claim is on you |
| Cosmos | Not included on most tours | Wheel it to your room |
| Rick Steves | You carry it | Roll it up to 15 minutes and up stairs (not on 7-day tours) |
| G Adventures (Italy trip notes) | You carry it | Up to 15–20 minutes; elevators rare |
Pack for the stairs, not the closet. One rolling bag you can lift onto a coach step is the rule on almost every tour above.

Which tour style suits how you like to travel now?
Answer for the person in your party who’ll find the trip hardest. The tour has to work for them.
Insurance windows that close soon after you book
If you take regular medication or see a specialist, this is the section to read twice.
| Operator | Plan or rule | Buy by | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Globus, Cosmos | Travel Protection | Within 14 days of deposit | Includes a pre-existing condition waiver; cancel-for-any-reason pays travel certificates valid two years |
| Trafalgar | Travel Protection Plan | Within 14 days of initial deposit | Cancel for any reason up to 24 hours out, as a Future Travel Certificate |
| Tauck (river example) | Cruise & Event Protection | Within 10 days of deposit | Optional; $799 on the Blue Danube cruise |
| Collette | Travel Protection Plan | At booking, with the deposit | Cancel for any reason up to 24 hours before departure; refund minus the plan fee |
| Abercrombie & Kent | Cancel Anytime upgrade | Within 14 days of deposit | Base plan can be bought up to final payment |
| O.A.T. | Protection required on listed trips | Before travel | Medical evacuation $200,000+, medical $50,000+ |
| G Adventures, Intrepid | Insurance mandatory | Before travel | G sets a $200,000 minimum for medical and evacuation |
| Rick Steves | Refundable Event policy | Automatic | The company says it’s “not insurance” |
Start with the line most travelers miss. The State Department’s older-traveler handout says it plainly: “Medicare does not cover healthcare overseas.” It recommends insurance that covers emergency medical and dental treatment.
Then watch the calendar. Pre-existing condition cover usually depends on buying soon after your first payment, and two weeks goes quickly.
Operator plans protect your tour payment first; check their medical limits before you rely on them. Our guides to pre-existing conditions and purchase windows compare outside policies.
The two-week rule
Put your insurance decision on the calendar for the day you pay the deposit. Globus, Cosmos and Trafalgar close their windows at 14 days; Tauck at 10. Our booking-timeline guide lays out every date.
What a late cancellation costs without cover
Nobody books a tour planning to cancel it. The schedules below show why the insurance window matters.
If you have to cancel
Slide to the day plans might change
Three published schedules. Without insurance, this is what you’d lose if a health problem stopped you traveling.
Globus and Cosmos terms revised September 8, 2026; deposit bars assume a tour of roughly $3,000 to $6,000. O.A.T. refunds in full if you cancel within 10 days of booking a departure 90+ days away, and its fees apply to the air-inclusive price. Your own booking’s terms are the ones that count.
The fees climb fast inside 90 days, and a health problem or family emergency doesn’t check the calendar. Insurance bought inside the window can turn most of these bars into a refund or a credit.
Book early if you like, but buy the protection on the same day.
Canes, walkers and wheelchairs: the operators’ own rules
Most rules we read say nothing about a cane. A walker or wheelchair changes which tours will take you, and those rules are strict.
| Operator | Wheelchair | Walker or cane | Personal help |
|---|---|---|---|
| Globus | Tell it at reservation; collapsible chairs may be allowed; abroad, you must manage steps without one | Abroad, steps and ramps without a walker | Not provided |
| Trafalgar (2022 conditions) | Access not guaranteed internationally; doesn’t supply wheelchairs | Not addressed | Bring a companion for help eating or dressing |
| Tauck | Staff can’t help with wheelchairs or scooters | Same | Travel with an able companion |
| Rick Steves | Guides can’t assist; hotels may lack elevators | Same | An able companion takes full responsibility |
| O.A.T. | Not on the trips we read | Dalmatian Coast: only with an assisting companion | Leaders may restrict participation |
| Collette | Many tours offer options for limited mobility | Tell it before booking | Ask before booking |
If anyone in your party can’t manage steps, start with a private tour or a river cruise, and confirm every hotel and vehicle in writing. Our accessible cruising guide covers the ships.
Health and medication: what operators and the State Department ask
Operators can’t give medical advice, and neither can we. Here’s what they ask of you in writing.
Trafalgar’s conditions ask you to attest that you’re physically fit for the trip. O.A.T.’s trip leaders may restrict participation, or in some cases send a traveler home, if limitations affect the group.
Altitude and heat change a day. Collette’s gentlest level covers altitudes up to 5,000 feet; above that, ask your doctor about the itinerary’s highest night.
The State Department suggests packing an ample supply of prescription medication, and leaving a copy of your passport and itinerary with someone at home.
Collette suggests starting six to eight weeks ahead, building to 30 to 60 minutes of continuous walking. Book the tour you can walk today, not the one you hope to manage by spring.
Before you book a slower-paced tour
Who fits where, whatever your age
Good fit if
- An hour of walking at a time is your limit: a river cruise, Collette Level 1, Road Scholar Easy Going or Trafalgar Easy Pace
- You want luggage, hotels and transfers handled: Tauck, at a higher price
- You’re active and curious and walk 3 miles easily: O.A.T. or a Collette Explorations tour
- Someone in your party needs help walking: a private tour, with a companion booked
Stop and check if
- The itinerary has more one-night stops than two- and three-night ones
- You’d need staff to help with a walker or wheelchair; none of these operators provide it
- You’re relying on Medicare abroad
- You plan to buy insurance after the 14-day window
Our take
The right tour for a slower pace is one that asks for fewer miles, fewer hotel changes and fewer bags you lift yourself. Age doesn’t appear in any of those rules.
Collette’s Level 1 and Spotlights, Road Scholar’s Easy Going programs and river cruises are the gentlest we found in writing. Trafalgar’s Easy Pace wins on fewer hotel changes, and Tauck costs more and handles the most for you.
Take the quiz for the person who’ll find the trip hardest, then send us the itinerary. We’ll ask the operator about elevators, the longest day and the insurance deadline.

What slower-paced travelers ask us
What are the best tour companies for seniors?
The best fit depends on pace, not age. For the gentlest days, look at Trafalgar’s Easy Pace tours, Collette’s Level 1 and Spotlights one-hotel stays, Road Scholar’s Easy Going programs and river cruises. Tauck handles luggage and logistics at a higher price. O.A.T. is built for travelers 50 and up but asks you to walk about 3 miles unassisted.
Is there an upper age limit on land tours?
Not at the companies we read. Trafalgar states no maximum age. What operators do ask is whether you can manage the trip: Trafalgar asks you to attest you’re physically fit, and O.A.T. lists physical requirements such as walking about 3 miles unassisted.
Which tours have the least walking?
Collette’s Level 1 means up to 60 minutes of walking at a time with gentle stairs. Road Scholar’s Easy Going level keeps walking to a minimum and avoids stairs where possible. Tauck’s Activity 1 is about an hour of walking. River cruises and scenic rail ask the least of your feet.
Will someone carry my luggage on a tour?
On many tours, yes, for one bag. Globus’s FAQ lists hotel porterage for one bag (its terms call it an additional charge, so confirm), Trafalgar’s conditions list one suitcase per person at each hotel, Tauck includes luggage handling, and O.A.T. porters carry one bag outside baggage claim. Cosmos doesn’t include porterage on most tours, and Rick Steves expects you to roll your own bag up to 15 minutes and up stairs.
How many hotel changes are there on a tour?
It varies widely. Trafalgar’s Easy Pace Italy stays three nights each in Rome, Florence and Venice. Rick Steves tours usually stay two nights per stop, Collette’s Explorations average nearly three, and in our August 2026 ledger Trafalgar’s Amazing Britain made 7 hotel changes in 9 nights. Count the hotels on the itinerary before you book.
Does Medicare cover me on a tour abroad?
Plan as if it doesn’t. The State Department’s older-traveler handout says Medicare does not cover healthcare overseas and recommends insurance for emergency medical and dental treatment. Check your own plan, then buy coverage with medical evacuation.
When must insurance be bought to cover a pre-existing condition?
Usually within days of your deposit. Globus and Cosmos Travel Protection includes a pre-existing condition waiver if bought within 14 days of deposit; Trafalgar’s plan must be bought within 14 days of the initial deposit; Tauck’s Cruise & Event Protection within 10 days; Collette’s plan at booking. Third-party policies set their own windows.
Can I take a land tour with a walker or wheelchair?
Sometimes, with the right operator and a companion. Globus says that outside the US you must manage steps and ramps without a wheelchair or walker. Tauck and Rick Steves require an able companion. O.A.T.’s Dalmatian Coast trip allows walkers only with a companion who can assist. Collette says many of its tours offer options for limited mobility.
