What a foliage tour really buys you
You’re buying a week of back roads in the right month, with someone else holding the inn rooms everyone wants. Prices below are from-prices in US dollars per person sharing, before flights, from the operators’ own pages unless we label a reseller.
- Boston1 nightA Freedom Trail walk through the historic streets and markets.
- Saratoga Springs1 nightWest across Massachusetts to the old spa town in upstate New York.
- Stowe2 nightsWeston and Woodstock on the way, a maple farm near Montpelier, a day trip to Shelburne; the lodge the von Trapp family chose.
- North Conway2 nightsFranconia Notch and a gondola above Loon Mountain, then a day in Crawford Notch.
- Portland1 nightDown to Kennebunkport and the Maine coast, with a lobster meal.
- Bostonscenic driveSouth along the rocky coast to the departure transfer.
From $4,925 on Trafalgar’s page; its September 19 to October 16, 2027 dates were listed at $5,175 to $5,525. Average group 33. Stops and highlights from Trafalgar’s day titles.
Where the color is, week by week
You’re booking months ahead for a color nobody can forecast that far out. The pattern, though, is steady. Tap a week.
The north woods and the swamps turn first
Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom usually peaks in mid to late September, two to three weeks ahead of the rest of the state, per Burlington’s tourism office. Wet low ground goes red early every year.
- Yankee’s historical map starts northern Maine and the White Mountains in mid-September
- In 2026 the top of the Kancamagus Highway was already turning by September 20
- Too early for most tours; Trafalgar’s Autumn Colors starts as early as September 12
Northern Maine, the Green and White Mountains
Maine’s far-north zones peaked between September 23 and October 6 in every year from 2020 to 2024. In 2026, WCAX reported the northern and central Green Mountains peaking by month’s end.
- Vermont’s central high country runs late September to early October
- A tour that starts now catches the mountains at their best and the coast still green
- Pick a route that ends on the coast
The middle of the wave, and the middle of most tour calendars
Maine’s western mountains peaked September 30 to October 11 over the five years; its central zone from September 30 to October 18. Trafalgar’s Premium foliage tour runs a departure almost every few days through here.
- If you can only pick one week blind, pick a departure that starts in this window
- Holiday weekend: Indigenous Peoples’ Day falls on October 11, 2027
- Trafalgar’s October 9, 2027 date was its dearest at $5,525
Southern Vermont, the Champlain Valley, Acadia
Vermont’s southern valleys and the Champlain Valley peak in early to mid October. Maine’s coast peaked October 7 to 20 in four of the five years, and on Maine’s final 2026 report (October 14) the coast and the south were at peak while the north was past it.
- Mountains are often past peak by now; the coast and lower valleys aren’t
- Tours with Bar Harbor or Portland late in the route do well here
- Trafalgar’s last Premium date we saw started October 16
Coastal Connecticut and Rhode Island
Yankee’s map puts coastal Connecticut and Rhode Island in late October to early November. By October 22, 2026, VTDigger reported most of Vermont past peak.
- Few foliage tours run this late; check the calendar before you plan
- A Cape Cod and Newport tour can still find color
- Expect bare hillsides in the north
| Maine zone | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zone 7, far north | 9/30 | 10/6 | 10/5 | 10/4 | 10/2 |
| Zone 6, northwest | 9/23 | 10/6 | 10/5 | 10/4 | 10/2 |
| Zone 5, western mountains | 9/30 | 10/6 | 10/5 | 10/11 | 10/2–10/9 |
| Zone 3, central (Bangor, Fryeburg) | 9/30 | 10/13 | 10/12 | 10/18 | 10/16 |
| Zone 2, Downeast (Bar Harbor) | 10/7 | 10/20 | 10/12 | after 10/25 | 10/16 |
| Zone 1, south coast (Portland) | 10/7 | 10/20 | 10/19 | after 10/25 | 10/16 |
Dates are the Maine Forest Service report that recorded peak in each zone. “After 10/25” means peak came after the season’s last report. Vermont and New Hampshire publish weekly reports and a tracker but no comparable table, so we use Burlington’s tourism office and Yankee Magazine’s historical map for them. Nobody publishes temperatures or crowd counts for this; we don’t invent them.
If peak comes early, or late
Every fall someone books the perfect week and finds it a week off. Here’s why that hurts less than you think.
What the five years show
In 2020 Maine’s coast peaked on October 7. In 2023 it was still building after the last report of the season on October 25.
That’s nearly three weeks of swing at one spot. The order didn’t change, though: north and high ground first, the coast and the south later, every year.
Visit NH calls its own peak map “a bit of a leap of faith.” Fair enough.
What the tour companies promise
Nothing about color. None of the tour pages we read guarantee foliage or refund a green week, and we wouldn’t expect one to.
How to hedge it
Book a route that crosses latitude and elevation. Trafalgar’s Premium tour goes Stowe, then the White Mountains, then the Maine coast; Tauck’s Grand New England adds the Berkshires and southern Vermont.
If the mountains are past it, the coast probably isn’t. If the coast is green, the mountains are on fire.
A tour that sits in one region, like a Cape Cod and Newport loop, is a beach trip with leaves, not a foliage hedge.
Then check the state reports the week before you fly. You can’t move a tour date, but you can move a free afternoon or a pre-tour night.
Our rule of thumb
For a Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine tour, a start date between about September 25 and October 10 puts peak color somewhere on your route in most years. That’s our reading of the Maine table and the regional guidance, not a promise.
Who runs New England in the fall, with real 2027 tours

USD per person sharing, before flights. “Reseller” means the agency Global Journeys, used where the operator’s own page didn’t show a price; ask us for the live figure. Trafalgar’s 2027 tiers are Saver (ex-Costsaver), Classic and Premium (ex-Insight). Collette’s route comes from its recent departures; confirm the 2027 version. Gate 1 has sold a 9-day Classic New England Fall Foliage with a Cog Railway ride, but we found no 2027 price; ask us.
Budget coach: Cosmos, Trafalgar Saver
About $300 to $340 a day. Cosmos leans on Cape Cod; the Saver tour gives two nights each in Killington and North Conway but only five breakfasts in ten days.
Mainstream: Trafalgar, Globus, Collette
About $525 to $625 a day, with more meals. Trafalgar’s Autumn Colors and Globus both go to Acadia; Collette skips Acadia for Boothbay Harbor and adds a Lake Winnipesaukee cruise.
Premium: Trafalgar Premium
About $616 a day, average 33 guests, two nights each in Stowe and North Conway. The best-paced of the mid-priced loops we read.
Learning-led: Road Scholar
Eleven days, 26 meals, every tip included, with talks on White Mountain ecology and American art. Slower, and built around the lectures.
Luxury: Tauck
Two nights at every hotel on Grand New England, including the Omni Mount Washington, lunch at Edith Wharton’s The Mount, and a morning lobstering out of Portland.
A day in the White Mountains
You’ve seen the route. This is what one of its best days looks like, using the tour’s own day titles.
Leave Stowe for New Hampshire
Day 5 of Trafalgar’s Premium foliage tour heads east through Montpelier.
Franconia Notch State Park
The road squeezes between Cannon Mountain and the Franconia Range. Trafalgar lists a gondola ride above Loon Mountain, just south of the notch, among the tour’s highlights.
Down into North Conway
Two nights here, so you unpack once.
Crawford Notch
Day 6 follows the forest trails through the notch, one of Trafalgar’s Make Travel Matter experiences.
Foliage tours are gentle on the legs and heavy on the coach. That’s the deal.
Road Scholar spells it out: walking up to 2 miles a day at about 2 mph, standing up to an hour, and up to four hours a day on the coach. Tauck rates Grand New England 2 for activity and 3 for pace, with some days of 2 to 3.5 miles on foot.
Summits are another climate. The Cog Railway warns that Mount Washington’s top is often far colder, windier and wetter than the base; pack a waterproof jacket and a hat even on a warm October day.
Using a wheelchair or walker? Road Scholar says it can’t accommodate mobility devices on this program, and the Cog’s historic coaches need you to transfer to a seat. Ask before you book; a private tour is often the better fit.
What a fall week in New England costs
The spread is nearly three to one. Meals and hotel nights explain most of it, so add them before you compare.
Our arithmetic on the from-prices above. Inclusions differ: Road Scholar includes 26 meals and every tip; the Saver tour includes five breakfasts.
All-in math
What a foliage tour costs once you land in Boston
We filled in Trafalgar’s 8-day Premium tour and the midpoints of Trafalgar’s tip guidance. The meals figure is our starting estimate; change it, and swap in your own quote.
The tour includes 7 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 3 dinners, so about 10 meals are yours. The extras line starts at one high-season coach seat on the Conway Scenic Mountaineer ($83). Add a Boston hotel the night before, and your flight.

Matcher
Match a real 2027 foliage tour to how you travel
Four taps: budget, pace, what you want to see, and length.
The foliage by train: four rides worth knowing
Trains won’t replace the coach, but they’re the best seat in the White Mountains. Book them for your free time.
| Train | Route | Time | What it costs | Know this |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conway Scenic Mountaineer | North Conway to Crawford Notch and back | 4 to 4.5 hours | Adults $75–$83 coach, $105–$130 Comfort, $185–$198 dome (regular / high season) | Two departures a day July to October; boxed lunch extra, order 48 hours ahead |
| Mount Washington Cog Railway | Base Station to the 6,288-ft summit | Just under 3 hours round trip, about 1 hour on top | Not on its FAQ; ask | Sells out weeks ahead in foliage season; no group rates then |
| Amtrak Vermonter | Washington, DC to St. Albans, VT, via New York | 13 h 45 end to end | Coach or Business; book on Amtrak | Daily; stops at Brattleboro, White River Junction, Montpelier-Berlin, Waterbury-Stowe, Essex Junction |
| Amtrak Downeaster | Boston North Station to Brunswick, ME | 3 h 25 | Coach or Business; book on Amtrak | Wells, Old Orchard Beach, Portland and Freeport; leaves from North Station, not South Station |
None of the tour pages we read list a train ride, apart from Gate 1’s Cog Railway day on its recent itinerary; Tauck reaches the summit of Mount Washington but doesn’t say how. North Conway is a two-night stop on Trafalgar, Collette and the Saver tour, so the Mountaineer fits a free day if you book your own seat.

Seeing it from the water: foliage cruises
Seabound books cruises first, so here’s the honest split. The mountains are a land trip; the coast and the Maritimes are a ship.
What a cruise sees
A Canada and New England cruise sees the coast: Boston, Portland, Bar Harbor, Halifax and often Quebec City. The lines spread fall sailings from early September to late October because nobody can sell a peak date.
Our Canada & New England cruise guide maps which ports peak when. Bar Harbor is a tender port with a passenger cap; read our Bar Harbor port guide first.
The papers
A US-only tour needs no passport. A cruise that calls in Canada does: per CBP, US citizens on a closed-loop sailing can re-enter with a birth certificate and photo ID, but bring a passport or passport card if there’s any chance you fly home from a Canadian port.
Mixing the two
Globus sells a 12-day New England & Canadian Coastal Wonders that pairs a coach tour with a Holland America sailing, Boston to Quebec City, at about $4,879 to $5,229 for 2027 on a reseller listing.
Doing it yourself? Tour the mountains first, then board in Boston. See our Boston cruise port, Portland, Maine, Halifax and Quebec City pages, and our cruise-and-tour combos guide.
The coast peaks later than the mountains, which is useful. A late-September tour and an early-October sailing chase the same wave south.
Peak weeks, crowds and hotel prices
You’re traveling in the region’s busiest month. The fare absorbs most of that; plan around the rest.
The busiest weekend
The Indigenous Peoples’ Day weekend is typically the peak of fall travel in Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire, the Boston Globe reports. In 2027 the Monday is October 11.
New Hampshire alone expected about 3.9 million fall visitors in 2026, per the state’s economic affairs department.
What it does to prices
No state publishes a peak-week hotel rate, so we won’t quote one. The regional innkeepers’ association says rooms fill months ahead and late bookers overpay.
What it does to tour fares
You can see it on the tour calendars. Trafalgar’s Premium tour runs $5,175 to $5,250 on most fall 2027 dates, but its October 9 departure, the holiday weekend, was $5,525.
The Saver tour climbs from $3,375 in late September to $3,950 on October 11.
That’s the case for a tour in foliage season. The fare is set when you book, and the inn rooms are already held; the night before in Boston is the one you price yourself.
Flights, the clock and the paperwork
This is the easiest trip in our land-tour library to get to. Keep it that way with one decision: arrive the day before.
Flying from Florida or Texas? Price a nonstop to Logan and arrive by mid-afternoon the day before the tour. Ask us and we’ll match the flight to your tour’s first meeting time.
Booking your own Boston night? Our Boston hotel rankings and Boston airports guide cover where to stay and how to get in from Logan.
Tipping on a New England tour
Tipping in New England is American tipping. The only question is what your operator already folded in.
| Operator | Tour leader | Driver and others | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trafalgar | $5–$7 per day | Driver $3–$5 per day; hotel porters and dining-room tips included | Trafalgar tipping guide and US booking conditions |
| Road Scholar | Included | Included | Gratuities included in all programs; no “passing the hat” |
| Tauck | Director extra | Local guides, porters, servers included | Tauck FAQ (land journeys) |
| Collette | Extra | Extra | End-of-trip tips excluded in US terms |
| Globus, Cosmos | No figure published | No figure published | Prepaid tips offered in select destinations, not Europe |
Our worked example: at Trafalgar’s midpoints, an 8-day tour adds about $80 per person in leader and driver tips.
Solo, slower, or bringing the grandparents
Tour pricing is built for two people sharing a room and walking at an average clip. Here’s where everyone else should look first.
| If you are… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Traveling solo | Road Scholar or Trafalgar | Road Scholar’s tips and 26 meals are in the fare, so the supplement is the only extra. Trafalgar offers room matching on its solo-friendly tours; ask whether yours qualifies. |
| Solo on a budget | Cosmos | Cosmos waives the single supplement on select 2027 tours (Europe-only as published); ask about New England dates |
| Slower on your feet | Collette or Tauck | Two nights at every stop on Tauck; two-night stays at three of four stops on Collette |
| Using a mobility device | A private tour | Road Scholar can’t accommodate wheelchairs, walkers or scooters on this program |
| A family | Trafalgar or Collette | Boston, Ben & Jerry’s and a lake cruise are easy wins; check minimum ages with the operator |
| After learning, not shopping | Road Scholar | Lectures on ecology and art; Keep the Pace activity level |
| After luxury | Tauck Grand New England | The Omni Mount Washington, the Equinox, two nights at every hotel |
Ask for the single supplement in dollars on your exact date; Collette notes its single rooms are limited and go first come, first served. Our solo travel guide and slower-pace guide compare every operator’s policy.

Who should book a foliage tour, and who should drive
Book a tour if
- You want the inn rooms in Stowe and North Conway in October without fighting for them
- You’d rather someone else drove Crawford Notch while you looked out the window
- You’re traveling solo and want company at dinner
- You want the color hedge of a route that covers three states
Look elsewhere if
- You love driving and can book inns a year out; New England is easy by car, see our Boston rental-car guide
- You want to hike, not ride; look at active trips
- You want the Maritimes and Quebec more than Vermont; take a cruise
- You can only travel in late October; most foliage tours have finished by then
Our take
Book the route, not the week. A tour that goes from the Green Mountains to the Maine coast has two or three weeks of peak color to work with.
For most people, that’s Trafalgar’s 8-day Premium loop at about $5,200 on fall dates, or Tauck’s Grand New England if you want the grand hotels.
On a tight budget, the 10-day Saver tour does the job. Budget for the dinners it leaves out.

What leaf-peepers ask us
When is peak fall foliage in New England?
It moves north to south and inland to coast. Maine’s state reports put northern Maine’s peak week between September 23 and October 6 in 2020 to 2024, and the southern coast between October 7 and the season’s last report on October 25, or later. Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom usually turns in mid to late September, its southern valleys and the Champlain Valley in early to mid October. Yankee Magazine’s historical map puts coastal Connecticut and Rhode Island as late as early November.
Which week should I book a foliage tour?
For a tour that covers Vermont, the White Mountains and the Maine coast, the last week of September through mid-October gives you peak color somewhere on the route in most years. Departures that start around September 25 to October 10 sit in the middle of that window. The holiday weekend (Indigenous Peoples’ Day, October 11, 2027) is typically the busiest of the fall.
What happens if peak color comes early or late?
No tour company we checked promises color or refunds for its absence. The protection is the route: a tour that runs from the northern mountains to the coast crosses two to three weeks of foliage timing, so if the mountains are past peak, the coast usually isn’t yet, and the reverse.
How much does a New England foliage tour cost?
The 2027 from-prices we found run from about $2,709 for Cosmos’ 9-day Classic New England to $8,390 for Tauck’s 12-day Grand New England, per person sharing, before flights. Trafalgar’s 10-day Saver tour starts at $3,375 and its 8-day Premium tour at $4,925, with peak October dates up to about $5,525.
Do I need a passport for a New England foliage tour?
Not for a tour that stays in the US. If your trip enters Canada, such as a Quebec or Nova Scotia extension, carry a passport or passport card. US citizens on a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends at the same US port can re-enter with a birth certificate and government photo ID, per CBP, though a passport is the safer document if you have to fly home from a foreign port.
Can I see the foliage by train?
Yes. The Conway Scenic Railroad’s Mountaineer runs about 4 to 4.5 hours round trip from North Conway through Crawford Notch, from $75 in coach. The Mount Washington Cog Railway takes just under three hours round trip to the 6,288-foot summit and sells out in foliage season. Amtrak’s Vermonter runs daily through Brattleboro, Montpelier and Waterbury-Stowe; the Downeaster runs Boston to Brunswick, Maine.
How much should I tip on a New England tour?
Trafalgar suggests $5 to $7 a day for the Travel Director and $3 to $5 for the driver. Road Scholar includes all gratuities. Tauck includes local guides, porters and dining-room servers but not its Director on land journeys. Collette leaves end-of-trip tips to you.
Is a foliage cruise better than a land tour?
They see different things. A Canada and New England cruise sees the coast: Boston, Portland, Bar Harbor, Halifax and often Quebec City. A land tour sees the mountains and back roads of Vermont and New Hampshire, where the color usually peaks first. If inland color is the point, tour; if the Maritimes are, cruise.
