Renting a Car After a Boston Cruise: Maine, Acadia and the Mountains

A car rented off a Boston ship can point north to Maine and the mountains, or south to Newport. Acadia’s Cadillac Summit Road needs a $6 vehicle reservation through Oct 25, 2026, on top of the park pass, and most of those slots open just two days ahead. Bar Harbor is about 266 miles from the cruiseport by our estimate, so Acadia is a night away, not a day. Price the fuel and the park before the car — the rental is the easy part.

The Cadillac reservation comes before the car

Before the summit

Acadia is the longest drive on this page, and the only one with a deadline. The Park Service requires a $6 vehicle reservation for Cadillac Summit Road through Oct 25, 2026, separate from the entrance pass. Thirty percent of slots open 90 days ahead and 70% open two days ahead at 10 AM Eastern.

Two days ahead can fall while you’re still on the ship.

Dock on a Saturday and want the summit on Monday? The 10 AM release for Monday lands that same Saturday morning — set an alarm, not a reminder.

Acadia’s vehicle pass is $35 for 7 days, plus $100 for each non-US resident 16 and older without an annual pass.

That fee is per person, not per car, so a family with two non-US adults pays $235 before the summit, by our arithmetic. Acadia’s annual pass is $70, and non-US residents admitted with it skip the non-resident fee, per the Park Service.

The park’s fare-free Island Explorer bus runs seven days a week through Oct 13, with reduced fall service. It needs an entrance pass too, and the Park Service says plainly that it doesn’t serve the Cadillac summit.

The drive is about 266 miles and 5 hr 47 min with no traffic, by our estimate.

Book a night in Maine; the round trip in one day is more than 11 hours of driving before you see the park.

Our route estimates, one way (OpenStreetMap routing, no traffic, no stops), with points placed by hand; fees from the National Park Service, the Forest Service and the Preservation Society of Newport County, read Oct 1, 2026. Distances are estimates

Kennebunkport and Portland are the realistic day drives north — under two and a half hours each way on paper. Boston traffic will stretch both.

White Mountain National Forest sites take a pass, and the Forest Service page we read listed the passes without prices. Sort one out before you park.

Newport is the trip south, about 71 miles by our estimate. A car rented in Boston and driven down is taxed where it was rented, as we read the rules, not in Rhode Island.

Salem, Plymouth and Concord are closer still — the day-trip page sorts which of them need a car at all.

Our sketch, every box editable. The $50 base is an assumption, not a quote. Fuel covers about 532 miles there and back by our route estimate, at 30 mpg and $4.38 a gallon, AAA’s Boston average for regular on Oct 1, 2026. Massachusetts’ tax and contract fees are in, as the hub itemises them. Park fees, Maine tolls and the night in Bar Harbor are not, because we didn’t price them.

At an assumed $50 a day, a Seaport car for three days and about 532 miles of fuel comes to about $249 by our arithmetic. Collect it at Logan instead and it’s about $286.

Fuel alone is roughly $78 of that — more than a day’s base rate.

Add $35 for the park pass and $6 for the summit reservation — both are charged per car. The night in Bar Harbor is the cost we didn’t price, so book it before the car.

Our arithmetic at $4.38 a gallon, AAA’s Boston-area average for regular on Oct 1, 2026; distances are no-traffic route estimates. Our arithmetic

AAA put Boston’s average for regular at about $4.38 on Oct 1, 2026, and the statewide figure a shade lower, about $4.36.

At 30 mpg that’s roughly 15 cents a mile — before any tolls, which we didn’t price for Maine. A thirstier SUV or minivan pushes it up, so drop the mpg in the calculator if that’s what you’re driving.

Return the car full, or the company’s refuelling price replaces the pump’s — a line we didn’t research for Boston, not one we’d leave to chance.

    The day you dock

Collecting the car the morning you’re off the ship

Off the ship, bags in hand, and the drive north waiting.

We found no rental desk at the pier — the car comes from a Seaport or downtown desk, or from Logan, a cab ride away.

Disembarking on a Sunday is the trap — several downtown desks close early or don’t open, so check yours on the hub’s hours checker before you book.

A Logan pick-up costs more than a downtown one for the same car. The hub prices that gap by the length of the rental.

Flying home from somewhere else? Price it as a one-way. Our one-way guide shows how that fee is built.

    Reserving

Reserve the summit, then the car

Reserve Cadillac on the Park Service’s system first, if Acadia is on the list. Then collect the car in the Seaport the morning you dock, or at Logan if the ship is late.

Return it wherever the trip ends — Logan if you fly out, another city if you don’t.
