Capitals by train, or fjords by coach and ferry
Scandinavia’s cities are a train ride apart. Its fjords are a long drive from any of them.
You’re deciding between museums and mountains. Rick Steves’ Best of Scandinavian Capitals spends three nights in each city and moves you by train and bus, never through the fjords.
The fjords version is a road trip with ferries. Trafalgar’s Scenic Scandinavia uses nine hotels in 14 days, and in return you ride the Flåm Railway and wake up twice at Geiranger.
Cosmos’s 12-day Focus on Scandinavia sits in between: two nights each in Copenhagen, Bergen and Stockholm, one-night stops on the way, and a cruise on the Sognefjord and Nærøyfjord.
If Norway is the reason you’re going, choose a fjords loop. If you want time in Tivoli, the Vasa Museum and the Munch collection, choose a capitals tour.
The Norway leg: Flåm, the Sognefjord and Geiranger
If the fjords are why you’re booking, read the Norway days first. They decide the trip.
Most of a fjords tour’s days are spent in western Norway. Trafalgar’s 14-day loop rides the Flåm Railway on day 7, crosses the Sognefjord by ferry and gives the Geirangerfjord a full day on day 9.
Tauck’s 14-day Scandinavia spends a night at Balestrand and two at Loen instead, with a ferry cruise on the Geirangerfjord and a troll car up to Briksdal Glacier.
Cosmos takes the Hardangerfjord ferry and a Sognefjord cruise that includes the narrow Nærøyfjord.
Only want Norway? Our Norway in a Nutshell guide covers the one-day rail-and-fjord ticket from Oslo to Bergen, and the Norway-only tours from Globus, Cosmos and Rick Steves.
Coming in by ship?
Big-ship fjord cruises call where tours stop. Our port guides cover Bergen, Geiranger and Flåm, with shore excursions for Bergen and Geiranger.
For the sea version of the same coast, start with Northern Europe cruises and Norwegian fjords cruises.
What to ask your operator
How many one-night stops does the fjord section have, and how long are the drive days? A loop with nine hotels in 14 days suits people who like moving; it tires people who don’t.
A capitals day: Stockholm by foot and by boat
The capitals reward a slower tour. Here’s a real day from one.
Gamla Stan on foot
Day 5 of Rick Steves’ Best of Scandinavian Capitals: a walking tour of Stockholm’s old town, past Stortorget, the cathedral and the Royal Palace.
Boat to the Vasa Museum
A short boat ride to the 17th-century warship that sank on her maiden voyage.
Yours to plan
Free time for Skansen’s open-air folk museum, the ABBA museum or more of the city; a 72-hour metro pass comes with the tour.
On your own
Rick Steves rates the day strenuous: 2 to 8 miles with hills and stairs. The next day adds City Hall and a 2½-hour archipelago cruise.
A capitals tour gives each city two or three nights. Rick Steves sends the group from Copenhagen to Stockholm by train, about 5½ hours over the Øresund Bridge, then on to Oslo by bus, about 6½ hours.
Tauck’s eight-day version flies from Copenhagen to Oslo instead, after four nights at the Radisson Collection Royal, a private dinner at the Odd Fellows Mansion and dinner at Nimb in Tivoli.
Port pages for the capitals

When to go: long June days, waitlisted summers, quiet winters
You’re trading daylight against price and availability. In Scandinavia, summer wins on light and loses on seats.
We don’t quote temperatures or crowd counts; the operators don’t publish them. The tabs use Rick Steves’ timing advice and the operators’ 2027 departure calendars and fares.
How many days Scandinavia takes
You’re fitting three countries into your vacation days. The distances, not the sights, set the length.
Lengths from the operators’ 2027 listings. Days include arrival and departure days.
Our rule of thumb
Ten days for the three capitals, two weeks once Norway’s fjords are in. A 12-day tour that does both spends a lot of one-night stops getting there.

From-prices in USD per person sharing, before flights. “Reseller” means the agencies Global Journeys, TourRadar or FROSCH, used where the operator’s own price didn’t load. Trafalgar’s 12-day Highlights of Scandinavia (its Saver tier, 3-star hotels) isn’t in the table because only a Canadian-dollar fare loaded; Contiki’s 12-day Scandinavia (ages 18 to 35) showed no 2027 date. Ask us for both.
Coach operators: Trafalgar, Globus, Cosmos, Collette
They run both routes. Trafalgar sells the fjords loop in all three of its 2027 tiers: Saver (Highlights, 12 days), its 14-day Scenic tour, and Premium (the former Insight small group, average 16).
Rick Steves
Ten days of capitals or 14 with the fjords, groups of 24 to 28, tips in the fare. Its 2027 capitals dates were mostly waitlisted when we checked.
Small groups: Intrepid
A Taste of Scandinavia uses trains, ferries and public buses with 12 travelers at most. Intrepid’s 18 to 35s version runs Copenhagen to Helsinki.
Luxury: Tauck
A Week In… Copenhagen & Oslo at about $749 a day, or the 14-day Scandinavia at about $685, with grand hotels like the Grand Hotel Oslo and Hotel Alexandra in Loen.
What Scandinavia costs per day, and all-in
Scandinavia runs from about $182 to about $749 a day on tour. The fare is the easy part; the lunches are where budgets slip.
Our arithmetic on the from-prices above. Inclusions differ: Rick Steves includes tips and transit passes; Intrepid’s small-group trip includes breakfasts only; Tauck includes a flight on its Copenhagen & Oslo week.
Scandinavia is an expensive place to eat, so the meals line matters more here than in southern Europe. Visit Norway’s own price examples put a budget meal at roughly NOK 170 to 350 (January 2024 figures).
For the full fjords loop, the realistic floor is about $287 a day on Cosmos (reseller fare) and about $370 on Trafalgar’s lowest 2027 fare.
All-in math
What a Scandinavia tour costs once you land
We filled in Trafalgar’s Scenic Scandinavia and its Fjords at its lowest listed fare, with the midpoints of Trafalgar’s tip guidance. The meals figure is our starting estimate; change it, and swap in your own quote.
Scenic Scandinavia includes 13 breakfasts and 8 dinners, so about 19 meals are yours, at Scandinavian prices. On Rick Steves, set both tip boxes to zero (tips are in the fare) and use its $600 single supplement on the capitals tour. Add your flights to the total.
Find your Scandinavia tour
Answer the focus question first and honestly. Capitals and fjords are close to two different vacations.
Matcher
Match a real 2027 Scandinavia tour to how you travel
Five taps: budget, focus, pace, group size and length. It suggests tours from the table above.
Helsinki, Tallinn and the Baltics: the add-ons to the east
Scandinavia’s neighbors across the Baltic come with the ferry built in. Two operators sell them on a tour.
| Add-on | On which tours | How you get there |
|---|---|---|
| Helsinki, Finland | Globus Northern Capitals (two nights, choice of excursion); Intrepid 18 to 35s Essential Scandinavia ends there | Overnight Baltic cruise from Stockholm on Globus |
| Tallinn, Estonia | Cosmos The Baltic States & Scandinavia | Ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki, then overnight to Stockholm |
| Riga and Vilnius | Cosmos The Baltic States & Scandinavia (with Berlin and Warsaw) | By coach from Copenhagen via a Gedser–Rostock ferry |
| The Arctic Circle | Globus Top of Scandinavia with Arctic Circle, Helsinki to Tromsø, 10 days from about $3,949 (reseller) | Coach north through Finland; a 14-day version adds a coastal cruise to Bergen |
| Lapland in winter | G Adventures Winter in Finland; A&K Finland & Sweden: Adventures in Lapland | Separate winter trips, January to March |
Finland is the easy add. It’s in Schengen like the rest, uses the euro, and sits one night’s ferry from Stockholm.
The Baltic version is a different pace: Cosmos covers eight countries in 14 days. Pick it for the map, not for long stays.
By ship instead? See our Helsinki and Tallinn port guides, and Helsinki and Tallinn shore excursions.
Kroner, cards and how much to tip
Tipping in Scandinavia is light in restaurants and normal on a coach. Cash is the thing to leave at home.
| Who or where | Guidance | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Denmark: restaurants, hotels, taxis | Service included; tipping optional | VisitDenmark |
| Sweden: restaurants | Round up; about 10% is generous | Visit Sweden |
| Norway: restaurants and bars | Not common elsewhere; 5–15% where you do | Visit Norway |
| Trafalgar Travel Director and driver | $5–$7 and $3–$5 per person per day | Trafalgar tipping guide |
| Rick Steves guide and driver | Tips included | Tour page |
| Tauck land journeys | Director gratuity not included | Tauck FAQ |
Cash and cards
Denmark, Sweden and Norway each use their own krone, and Finland uses the euro. VisitDenmark says many shops, cafés and restaurants take only cards or mobile payments, and some kiosks stop taking cash after 8 p.m.
Visit Norway says cards and phone payments work almost everywhere and foreign currency is rarely accepted. Bring a card with no foreign-transaction fee, and know its PIN.
The costs that surprise people
Meals and drinks, mostly. Count how many dinners your tour includes before comparing fares; Trafalgar’s Saver tour includes 4 in 12 days, its Scenic tour 8 in 14.
Hotel taxes and museum prices aren’t on any page we could check, so ask whether nights you add yourself include them.
Passports, flights to Copenhagen and the clock
Scandinavia is easy on a US passport. Plan the flights around a tour that ends in a different country than it starts.
Most of the tours we priced start in Copenhagen and end in Stockholm, Oslo or Helsinki, so book an open-jaw ticket. Tauck’s Scandinavia runs the other way, Stockholm to Bergen.
Fly in a day early, so a late connection doesn’t cost you the first day. Rick Steves’ capitals tour meets at 4 p.m. on day one, which still leaves little slack after an overnight flight.
Solo travelers, slower walkers and families
Twin-share fares assume a couple. These are the better starting points for everyone else.
| If you are… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Traveling solo on a budget | Rick Steves Best of Scandinavian Capitals | A published $600 single supplement, with tips and transit passes included |
| Solo and under 35 | Intrepid 18 to 35s Essential Scandinavia | Nine days Copenhagen to Helsinki, from about $1,695 (reseller) |
| A woman traveling solo | Tauck A Week In… Copenhagen & Oslo, Aug 8, 2027 | A women-only small-group departure averaging 24, led by a female Tauck Director |
| Slower on your feet | Tauck A Week In… Copenhagen & Oslo | Two hotels in eight days; Tauck rates activity 2 of 3, with 2 to 3.5 miles some days |
| After a small group with fjords | Trafalgar Spectacular Scandinavia (Premium) | Average 16 guests, two nights each at Stockholm, Geiranger, Bergen and Oslo |
| A family with teens | Intrepid A Taste of Scandinavia | Minimum age 15; trains, ferries and a night on an island |
Mobility changes the choice more than age does. Rick Steves calls its capitals tour “very active,” and a fjords loop means frequent bag-out mornings.
None of the tours we priced is built for young children. A private tour or our family tours guide is the better start.
Cruise combos, extra nights and when to book
A Baltic cruise before, a fjords cruise after, or neither. Plan the edges when you book the middle.
Adding a cruise
Copenhagen and Stockholm are Baltic cruise ports, and Bergen is the fjords hub. Viking’s 2027 British Isles Explorer sails from Bergen and sells Norway land extensions, including Oslo & Scenic Train, two nights from $1,399.
Globus also sells Top of Scandinavia with a coastal cruise to Bergen, 14 days. Read Northern Europe cruises and our cruise-and-land combos guide before choosing one or the other.
Before and after
Arrive a night early in Copenhagen; most people add a night at the far end too. Our Copenhagen guide covers the city.
How far ahead to book
Rick Steves’ 2027 capitals tour was already waitlisted on most dates in October 2026. For June to August, we’d book about a year out; our booking-window guide compares the operators’ deadlines.
Deposits and insurance
Trafalgar’s deposit starts at $200; Globus and Cosmos take $250 with final payment 60 days out on most trips; Rick Steves takes $400; Tauck $600, with final payment 90 days out. Some insurance benefits depend on buying soon after your deposit; read our purchase-window guide.

Your Scandinavia checklist
Ticks aren’t saved. Deposits and cancellation terms are on each operator’s guide below.
Who should tour Scandinavia, and who should go alone
Book a tour if
- You want the fjords and the capitals in one trip, with someone else timing the ferries
- You want three countries without three sets of train and hotel bookings
- You’re traveling solo and want a ready-made group and a published single supplement
- You want Helsinki or the Baltics folded in, with the overnight ferry arranged
Look elsewhere if
- You only want Copenhagen and Stockholm; the train between them is easy
- You only want the fjords for a day; the Norway in a Nutshell ticket does it
- You’re already on a Baltic or fjords cruise; add nights, not a tour
- You need a slow pace on a fjords loop; nine hotels in 14 days won’t give it
Our take
For a first trip built around the cities, take Rick Steves’ ten-day capitals tour if you can get a date, or Globus’s Northern Capitals if you want Helsinki too.
If Norway is the draw, Trafalgar’s 14-day Scenic Scandinavia is the value pick at about $370 a day, with the Flåm Railway and two nights at Geiranger. Tauck’s Scandinavia is the comfort pick, with fewer one-night stops.
Either way, count the included dinners before you compare fares.

What Scandinavia first-timers ask us
How many days do you need for Scandinavia on a tour?
Ten days covers the three capitals, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo, as on Rick Steves’ Best of Scandinavian Capitals or Globus’s Northern Capitals (which adds Helsinki). Adding Norway’s fjords takes 12 to 15 days: Cosmos and Trafalgar’s Saver tour run 12, Trafalgar’s Scenic Scandinavia and its Fjords runs 14, and its Premium small-group version 15.
What is the best month for a Scandinavia tour?
Rick Steves advises that Scandinavia is best between mid-June and late August, the peak season for weather and long days. Most 2027 tours run April to October; Rick Steves’ April and October capitals dates were its cheapest at $4,795, and Trafalgar’s June fjords dates its priciest at up to $6,395.
Do I need a visa or ETIAS for Scandinavia?
No visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180 in the Schengen area, which includes Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. Your passport should be valid at least three months past your departure. The EU’s Entry/Exit System has run in full since April 10, 2026 (fingerprints and a photo, free). ETIAS isn’t live and had no start date as of late October 2026.
Do I need cash in Scandinavia?
Very little. VisitDenmark says many shops, cafés and restaurants take only cards or mobile payments, and Visit Norway says cards and phone payments work almost everywhere. Denmark, Sweden and Norway each use their own krone; Finland uses the euro. Know your card’s PIN and carry a small amount for the odd cash-only stall.
How much should I tip in Scandinavia?
Restaurants don’t expect much. VisitDenmark says service is included in hotel, restaurant and taxi bills; Visit Sweden says rounding up is normal and about 10% is generous; Visit Norway says 5 to 15% in restaurants and bars. Tour staff are different: Trafalgar suggests $5 to $7 a day for its Travel Director and $3 to $5 for the driver, and Rick Steves includes guide and driver tips in the fare.
Can I add Helsinki or the Baltics to a Scandinavia tour?
Yes. Globus’s 10-day Northern Capitals ends with two nights in Helsinki after an overnight Baltic cruise from Stockholm, from $4,119 on April 24, 2027. Cosmos’s 14-day Baltic States & Scandinavia runs through Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn, then ferries to Helsinki and overnight to Stockholm, from about $2,549 on a reseller listing.
Is Scandinavia safe for US travelers?
The State Department rates Norway and Finland Level 1 (normal precautions) and Denmark and Sweden Level 2 (increased caution) because of terrorism. Denmark’s advisory was issued September 17, 2024 and Norway’s July 6, 2026; Sweden’s was reported reissued May 18, 2026. Check travel.state.gov before you go.
