Turkey on tour is one big loop. Choose how much to ride

Istanbul, Cappadocia, Konya, the Turquoise Coast, Pamukkale and Ephesus join up in a circle of about two weeks. Shorter tours cut an arc out of it. We priced real 2027 tours, from about $150 a day to more than $1,200.

Fewer stops; no Gallipoli or Troy

You’re choosing between seeing everything and spending fewer hours on the bus. Turkey is big, and the full loop is a long drive.

Rick Steves warns of long bus days on its Best of Turkey, and its third day is mostly a drive from Istanbul to Ankara after Topkapı. Trafalgar’s version adds Gallipoli and Troy, which means more road again.

Smaller groups trade breadth for time. Intrepid’s Classic Turkey drops Gallipoli and Troy and gives Cappadocia and Selçuk two nights each.

Decide whether Gallipoli matters to you before anything else. It’s the stop that most changes the shape of the tour.

03

Cappadocia: cave churches, the underground city and the balloon question

Cappadocia is the stop people picture first. The balloon at dawn is the one part of it no tour can promise.

Morning

Mustafapaşa on foot

Day 5 of Rick Steves’ Best of Turkey: a walking tour of the village where the group sleeps three nights.

Late morning

Göreme Open-Air Museum

Byzantine-era churches cut into the rock, with their painted interiors.

Afternoon

Lunch in a home

A home-prepared Cappadocian lunch, then a talk on Turkish carpet weaving.

Evening

Dinner in the village

Back in Mustafapaşa. The next day brings the Kaymaklı underground city and an optional valley hike.

The balloon, in numbers

More than 256,000 people flew over Cappadocia in the first half of 2026, Hürriyet Daily News reported from civil-aviation data, with up to 150 balloons launching on a good morning.

Weather decides. The region typically flies about 220 days a year, but rain and strong winds limited flights to 90 days between January and June 2026.

Tours treat it as an optional extra: Rick Steves lists it as not included, and Intrepid says it’s weather-dependent and can be canceled in high winds.

Tours with two or three nights in Cappadocia give you a second chance if the first morning is scrubbed.

What to ask your operator

How many mornings the tour spends in Cappadocia, whether it books the balloon for you on the first one, and what happens to your money if every flight is canceled.

04

Istanbul: two or three days, mosques and the Bosphorus

A tour’s Istanbul days are the fullest of the trip. Decide now whether two is enough.

Most tours give Istanbul two days at the start and sometimes a night at the end. Rick Steves fits Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı, the Spice Market, the Grand Bazaar and a Bosphorus cruise into its first two and a half days.

That’s brisk. If Istanbul is the part you’re most excited about, add two nights before the tour, or look at Rick Steves’ 7-day Best of Istanbul, $2,895 in 2027.

Dress for mosque visits. Shoulders and knees covered, and a scarf for women, is the safe default; your guide will tell you the rest.

Arriving or leaving by ship?

Istanbul is a cruise port too. Our Istanbul cruise port guide, Istanbul guide and Istanbul shore excursions cover the terminal and the sights.

Booking your own nights? Our Istanbul hotel picks and Istanbul airports guide help with the edges of the trip.

05

Ephesus, Pamukkale and the Aegean side

The Roman ruins of the west sit a few hours apart. Tours fit them in differently.

The western half of the loop is ruins and terraces. Pamukkale’s white travertines sit beside the Roman city of Hierapolis; Rick Steves adds Aphrodisias, and everyone ends at Ephesus.

Tours base themselves differently for Ephesus: Rick Steves in Kuşadası, Intrepid in Selçuk for two nights, Trafalgar in Izmir.

Rick Steves rates its Ephesus day strenuous, with 2 to 8 miles over hills, stairs and uneven ground. Wear real shoes and carry water.

From a cruise ship

Kuşadası is the cruise port for Ephesus. Our Kuşadası cruise port guide and Kuşadası shore excursions cover the day trip if you’re seeing Ephesus from a ship instead.

Coming from Greece? Rick Steves’ tour ends with the option of a ferry to Samos, or a bus to Izmir for flights.

Entry fees

Turkey’s museum and site prices aren’t on any official page we could check, and they change. Ask which entries your fare covers: Hagia Sophia, Topkapı and its Harem, Göreme, Kaymaklı, Hierapolis and Ephesus.

06

The Turquoise Coast: a free day, a gulet or a walk

The south coast runs from Antalya west to Bodrum. Tours handle it in very different ways.

OptionWho sells itWhat you get
A free day in AntalyaTrafalgar, Rick Steves, GlobusThe old town, the harbor and a boat trip on your own; Rick Steves stops at Aspendos on the way
A 3-day coastal cruiseGate 1 Turkish Allure (14 days, Small Group)Three days on the water inside a land tour, from $4,799 land only
A week on a guletIntrepid Sail Turkey: Bodrum to FethiyeSeven nights on a wooden gulet, en-suite cabins, two meals a day, 14 guests at most, ages 15 and up
Walking the coastG Adventures Walking the Turquoise Coast (14 days)Coastal hikes, a Dalyan River boat trip, 12 travelers at most, ages 14 and up; no dates were open when we checked

The south coast is where Turkey slows down. Most coach loops give it one free day in Antalya; the boat trips give it a week.

Intrepid recommends May to September for the gulet and says July and August are the hottest months, about 25 to 35°C. Pack a soft bag; the cabins are small and the boat takes cash only for onboard purchases.

Want the coast without the ruins? A gulet week from Bodrum is the cleanest way to do it.

07

When to go: spring and autumn, balloons and beaches

You’re weighing balloon odds, beach weather and price. Turkey’s regions peak at slightly different times.

Apr–Junthe best window inland

Spring: the first choice inland

In Your Pocket calls April and May Istanbul’s best months, and spring mornings the clearest for Cappadocia’s balloons. Ephesus is more pleasant before the heat.

  • Trafalgar’s Best of Turkey runs $2,995 in March 2027 and $3,225 to $3,350 in April and May
  • Rick Steves shows waitlists from late March to early May 2027
  • Trafalgar sells a version timed to the Anzac Day dawn service at Gallipoli, from $3,425

Season descriptions are In Your Pocket’s and Intrepid’s, not our own. We don’t quote average temperatures for inland Turkey because no source we checked published them.

Our rule of thumb

Ten days for Istanbul, Cappadocia and Ephesus; two weeks for the full loop with the coast. Shorter tours that try to do the whole circle spend their days on the bus.

Our arithmetic on the from-prices above. Inclusions differ: Trafalgar’s Best of Turkey includes 24 meals; Rick Steves includes tips and about half the dinners.

The full loop on a coach costs about $173 to $273 a day, from Gate 1’s land-only Turkish Treasures to Rick Steves with tips included. Trafalgar sits in the middle at about $214.

Istanbul alone costs more per day than the loop: Rick Steves’ Best of Istanbul works out to about $414 a day. Pay for the city if the city is the point.

All-in math

What a Turkey tour costs once you land

We filled in Trafalgar’s Best of Turkey at its March 2027 fare, with the midpoints of Trafalgar’s tip guidance. The meals and extras figures are our starting estimates; change them, and swap in your own quote.

Best of Turkey includes 13 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 10 dinners, so about 16 meals are yours. Add the balloon flight in the extras box if you want it; ask us for the current price. On Rick Steves, tips are included, so set both tip boxes to zero. On Intrepid, use $4–7 and $2–4. Add your flights to the total.

Adding Greece, or a cruise

Turkey faces Greece across the Aegean, and the operators sell both sides together. Cruises call here too.

Turkey and Greece in one trip

Gate 1 sells a 12-day Highlights of Turkey & Greece from $3,449 and a 15-day version with a 3-day Aegean cruise from $4,689, both land only.

Globus pairs its Greek island tours with Istanbul: Greek Island Adventure with Istanbul (11 days) and Greek Island Hopper with Istanbul (13 days), about $4,519 and $4,969 on reseller listings.

Our Greece tour guide covers the other side of the Aegean.

Before or after a cruise

Globus’s Greek Escape plus a 7-night Idyllic Cruise visits Greece and Turkey, 11 days from $2,599 (March 11, 2027).

Sailing an eastern Mediterranean cruise instead? Check whether it calls at Istanbul or Kuşadası; our Mediterranean cruises guide covers the itineraries. A Cappadocia add-on before or after the ship is an easy way to see the interior.

Plan the flights as one ticket. We’ll check the cruise and tour dates line up before you commit to either.

Cash and cards

Turkey uses the lira. Intrepid recommends paying everyday costs in lira, notes that euros and dollars are accepted for bigger purchases like a balloon flight, and says small venues often take cash only.

Intrepid says cards work at common ATMs. Leaving the country, the State Department says you may carry up to 25,000 lira or the equivalent of €10,000.

The extras

The balloon flight is the big one, and no tour we checked includes it. Site entries, a Turkish bath and Bosphorus extras vary by operator; ask what your fare covers.

Turkish hotels may add taxes to nights you book yourself. The rate wasn’t on any official page we could check, so ask us to confirm it with your quote.

EarthquakesHave a planThe State Department says they occur throughout the country; leave contact details with family.

The border zone in the advisory is far from the tour loop: Istanbul, Cappadocia, the Aegean and the Turquoise Coast are well away from it. Read the full advisory on travel.state.gov and enroll in STEP.

Turkish Airlines plans 12 weekly flights from Atlanta and from Dallas/Fort Worth and nine from Boston in summer 2027. Many loops start and end in Istanbul; one-way tours end in Kuşadası, Antalya or on the coast, so check where yours finishes before you book the flight home.

Fly in a day early. Istanbul is worth the extra night anyway.

The State Department also notes widespread hostility toward LGB travelers and vaguely worded “public morality” laws. Read its Türkiye page before you go.

Before you book a Turkey tour

These are the lines that change the price or the trip. Tick them off as you go.

Your Turkey checklist

Deposits are modest: Trafalgar’s starts at $200, Collette’s is $349 land only, and Rick Steves takes $400 with final payment 60 days out. Rick Steves’ spring and autumn 2027 dates were already waitlisting in October 2026, so for April, May, September or October we’d book about a year ahead.

Ticks aren’t saved. Cancellation terms are on each operator’s guide below; for timing, see how far ahead to book and our insurance purchase-window guide.

17

Who should tour Turkey, and who should go another way

Book a tour if

  • You want the whole loop; it’s a long way to drive yourself
  • You want Ephesus, Pamukkale and Cappadocia explained by a guide
  • You’re pairing Turkey with Greece and want one company to handle the join
  • You’re traveling solo and want a ready-made group

Look elsewhere if

  • You only want Istanbul; a hotel and a few guided days will do
  • You hate long bus days; pick a 10-day small group or fly between regions
  • You’re already calling at Istanbul and Kuşadası on a cruise; add Cappadocia, not a full tour
  • You need full wheelchair access; ask before you assume

Our take

For a first trip, take a 13- or 14-day loop: Rick Steves if you want tips included and three nights in Cappadocia, Trafalgar if you want Gallipoli and Troy for about $214 a day. Either covers Istanbul, the balloon country, Pamukkale and Ephesus.

Short on time, or tired of buses already? Intrepid’s 10-day Classic Turkey covers the core with a group of 12.

Either way, ask how many mornings you’ll have in Cappadocia before you pay the deposit.

19

What Turkey first-timers ask us

How many days do you need for Turkey on a tour?

About 13 to 14 days for the full loop: Trafalgar’s Best of Turkey and Globus’s Turkish Delight run 14 days from Istanbul, and Rick Steves’ Best of Turkey runs 13 from Istanbul to Kuşadası. Ten days covers Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus at a quicker pace, as on Intrepid’s Classic Turkey. A week is Istanbul alone, or Istanbul plus one region.

Is the Cappadocia hot-air balloon ride included on tours?

Usually not. Rick Steves and Intrepid list it as an optional extra, and Intrepid notes it’s weather-dependent and can be canceled in high winds. Cappadocia typically flies about 220 days a year, but rain and wind limited flights to 90 days in the first half of 2026, according to Turkish civil-aviation data reported by Hürriyet Daily News. Book it for your first morning there so a cancellation can roll to the next day.

Is Turkey safe for a guided tour?

The US State Department rates Türkiye Level 2, “exercise increased caution,” in an advisory issued June 9, 2026. It says not to travel within 10 km (6 miles) of the borders with Syria or Iraq for any reason. The standard tour loop through Istanbul, Cappadocia, the Aegean and the Turquoise Coast stays far from those borders. Read the full advisory and enroll in STEP before you go.

Do US citizens need a visa for Turkey?

No. Since the start of 2024, US citizens with ordinary passports can visit for up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa. The State Department says your passport must be valid for six months beyond your entry date and have at least one blank page.

When is the best time to tour Turkey?

April to June and September to October, by In Your Pocket’s regional guide: mild in Istanbul, clear mornings for Cappadocia’s balloons and comfortable walking at Ephesus. August is when heat, crowds and prices peak on the coast. Winter is quieter and cheaper in Istanbul, with more balloon cancellations in Cappadocia.

How much should I tip on a Turkey tour?

It depends on the operator. Trafalgar suggests $5 to $7 a day for its Travel Director and $3 to $5 for the driver. Intrepid suggests $4 to $7 a day for its leader and $2 to $4 for drivers. G Adventures suggests $10 to $15 a day for its leader on its Turquoise Coast trip. Rick Steves includes guide and driver tips in the fare.

Can I combine a Turkey tour with a cruise or Greece?

Yes. Globus sells Greek Escape plus a 7-night Idyllic Cruise that visits Greece and Turkey, 11 days from $2,599, and Gate 1 sells a 15-day Highlights of Turkey & Greece with a 3-day Aegean cruise from $4,689 land only. Eastern Mediterranean cruises often call at Istanbul or Kuşadası, the port for Ephesus, so a land tour before or after the cruise is easy to add.
