What a night on a luxury train buys
You’re weighing a train as the trip itself, not as transport. These six lines frame every comparison below, and the route under them is one of the longest standard runs on the page.
- DarwinDay 1Board in the Top End; lunch is served as the train heads south.
- KatherineDay 1 · afternoonA Nitmiluk Gorge cruise, the Katherine Outback Experience or Cutta Cutta Caves; a helicopter over the gorges costs extra.
- Alice SpringsDay 2Simpsons Gap or Standley Chasm, the Desert Park or an off-road e-bike ride, then dinner at the old Telegraph Station.
- Manguri & Coober PedyDay 3A coach from the Manguri siding to the Breakaways and the opal fields, with lunch underground.
- Flinders RangesDay 4 · morningLight refreshments aboard as the ranges slide past.
- AdelaideDay 4Arrival after three nights and nine meals.
Wednesday and Saturday departures, March to November 2027. Journey Beyond’s own fares, per person in Australian dollars: Gold Twin from AU$4,190 (Advance Purchase, March and November) and Platinum Twin from AU$7,590. All meals, wines and the off-train experiences are included; helicopter and scenic flights are upgrades.
The bill per night, train by train
Sort by the night and the field splits in two. Europe’s sleepers sit near US$3,000 to $5,000 per person; Africa, India and Australia mostly land between $750 and $1,500.
Each train’s cheapest cabin, sharing, divided by nights aboard (daylight trains: per rail day). Converted at the Banque de France rates for October 23, 2026. Seven Stars sells mainly as a package, and Andean Explorer fares aren’t published, so neither is charted.

That gap isn’t about comfort alone. Rovos Rail’s smallest suite is about 7 m² with its own shower, more than twice an Orient-Express Historic cabin, at roughly a fifth of the nightly price.
You pay in Europe for the name and the setting. Judge by what’s in the cabin, not by the poster, and check which year each fare belongs to before you compare.
Cabin size and the shower question
If you’ll share a cabin for three nights, its size matters more than its paneling. Here’s each train’s entry cabin, its best one, and the bathroom.
| Train | Entry cabin | Top cabin | Private bathroom? | Guests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orient-Express | Historic, 3.3 m² | L’Observatoire, 31 m² (a whole carriage) | Suites only; Historic cabins share | — |
| Britannic Explorer | Double or Twin Suite | Grand Suite (three aboard) | Shower in every suite | 36 |
| Royal Scotsman | Twin, double or single | Grand Suite (two aboard) | Shower in every cabin | 38 max |
| La Dolce Vita | Deluxe, 7 m² | La Dolce Vita Suite (one); Suites 11 m² | Per an agent | 62 max, per an agent |
| E&O Express | Pullman, 5.8 m² | Presidential Suite, 11.6 m² | Private bathroom | — |

| The Blue Train | De Luxe, 4 × 2 m | Luxury, 5.13 × 2 m, with bath | Marble bathroom | — |
| Rovos Rail | Pullman, ~7 m² | Royal, ~16 m², with Victorian bath | Shower in every suite | 72 max |
| The Ghan & Indian Pacific | Gold Twin (berths) | Australis Suite; Platinum “almost twice” Gold | Gold Twin and up | — |
| Seven Stars | Suite, ~10 m² | Deluxe Suite, 17 m² | In every suite | 20 |
| Andean Explorer | Bunk-bed cabin | Deluxe Double | Shower in every cabin | 48 |
| Rocky Mountaineer & Glacier Express | A seat; you sleep in a hotel | — | — | — |
Sizes are each operator’s own, except La Dolce Vita and Seven Stars (agents’ figures). The Blue Train’s dimensions come from a South African agent. The Ghan’s Gold Single cabin isn’t described on Journey Beyond’s pages we read, so ask before you book one.
What the fare covers, and what it doesn’t
Most of these fares are close to all-inclusive. The gaps sit in three places: the bar, the tips and the hotel nights at each end.
| Train | Meals | Alcohol | Off-train excursions | Onboard tips |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orient-Express | All meals | Wine with meals on newer routes; bar extra | Varies by route | Service included |
| Britannic Explorer | Included | Included | Included | Not included |
| Royal Scotsman | Included | Wines and spirits | Visits included | Ask |
| La Dolce Vita | Included | “Selected beverages” | Per an agent | Ask |
| E&O Express | Included | House wine, local beer | Tours included | Ask |
| Maharajas’ Express | Included | House wines, spirits, beer | Guided, with monument fees | Not included |
| The Blue Train | Meals and high tea | Not French Champagne | Kimberley’s Big Hole | Ask |
| Rovos Rail | Included | Not French Champagne | With entrance fees | R100–300 a night suggested |
| The Ghan & Indian Pacific | Included | Wines and beverages | At each stop | Ask |
| Rocky Mountaineer GoldLeaf | Breakfast and lunch | BC wine, beer, spirits | None | Host gratuities |
| Glacier Express Excellence | Five courses | Wine, champagne | None | Ask |
Belmond’s Britannic Explorer FAQ says gratuities and insurance aren’t in the price. The Rovos tip suggestion comes from an agent’s Rovos FAQ (about US$10–20 per person per night). Flights and hotel nights before and after are extra on every train here.
Dress codes, children and getting aboard
Picture the dining car at 8pm. Some trains want a tie and some don’t care, and a few don’t take toddlers at all.
| Train | Dinner dress | Children | Luggage and access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orient-Express | Dark suit and tie at minimum; no jeans | Any age; under-12s sharing 20% off; under-2s free in a berth | One suitcase checked through, plus a small bag |
| Britannic Explorer | Smart casual, jacket for men; smarter final night | Welcome; under-2s free (bring a bassinet) | One suitcase, one carry-on, one garment bag; reduced mobility, contact Belmond |
| Royal Scotsman | Jacket for men; optional black tie or kilt on formal nights | Not published; ask | Ask |
| Rovos Rail | Formal: collar and tie, jacket optional | Not under 3; ages 3–9 pay 75%; long trips not advised under 13 (agent) | Two large cases suggested; not suitable for wheelchair users (agent) |
| The Blue Train | Formal (agent) | Under-6s free sharing; 6–11 half price (agent) | Ask |
| The Ghan & Indian Pacific | Smart casual; dressing up optional | Not published; ask | Platinum: 3 × 30 kg checked |
| Rocky Mountaineer | No dinner aboard | No minimum age; one price for every age | Two checked pieces (2023 terms) |
| Maharajas’, E&O, Seven Stars, La Dolce Vita, Andean Explorer | Not published; ask | Not published; ask | E&O: 30 kg per guest (Seat61) |
Rovos and Blue Train rules come from agents’ published policies, since the railways’ own information pages didn’t load for us; we confirm them on every booking.
Orient-Express or Britannic Explorer?
Both are Belmond’s, both run in Europe, and they answer different wishes. One sells a legend for a night; the other sells a short holiday on rails.
Pick the Orient-Express if one perfect night is the dream and you’ll ride it once. The Historic cabin is the icon; book a Suite if a private bathroom matters.
Pick the Britannic Explorer if you want a real trip out of it: three nights, excursions and every drink for less per night. The Royal Scotsman is the same idea in the Highlands, with no more than 38 guests and a higher nightly price.
Our call: for a first luxury sleeper in Europe, the Britannic Explorer gives more train for the money. The Orient-Express is the one to save for a milestone.
Rovos Rail or the Blue Train?
Same rails, same two cities, and fares within a few thousand rand of each other. The difference is the length of the ride and how you like to be looked after.
Pick Rovos for the extra night, the bigger top suite and the long routes north. Pick the Blue Train if two nights is plenty and a butler on call matters more than square footage.
Both include every drink except French Champagne. Our Rovos Rail and Blue Train guide has the routes, the safari pairings and the month-by-month prices.
The trains, region by region
Tap a region for its trains, their seasons and what changes for 2027. Fares come from the railways or the agents we name.
Belmond’s three, Italy’s newcomer and the Alps by day
The Orient-Express runs Paris to Venice from about March to December, with a Monte Carlo stop from May 2027. Belmond’s British pair loop from London and Edinburgh.
- La Dolce Vita Orient Express: 31 cabins, one- to four-night journeys from Rome, Venice and Palermo; first passengers April 4, 2025
- Glacier Express Excellence: a guaranteed window and five courses, Zermatt to St. Moritz; it pauses mid-October to early December
- For a first taste, Belmond’s British Pullman day trips from London start around £485
Rovos Rail and the Blue Train
Both run Pretoria to Cape Town. Rovos adds Victoria Falls, Durban and journeys as long as fifteen nights to Dar es Salaam; the Blue Train adds a once-a-year Kruger trip.
- Rovos 2027–28 fares rise from October 1, 2027: Pullman R59,900 to Cape Town
- Blue Train fares peak September 1 to November 15
- See our South Africa trains guide for safaris to pair
The E&O, the Maharajas’ and Seven Stars
The Eastern & Oriental Express has run three-night loops from Singapore since February 2024. The Maharajas’ Express runs October to April across Rajasthan.
- Maharajas’ Indian Splendour: Agra, Ranthambore, Jaipur, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Mumbai in six nights
- Seven Stars in Kyushu: 20 guests from Hakata on one- or three-night courses; places by lottery
- E&O: Essence of Malaysia November to February, Wild Malaysia March to October
Journey Beyond, Rocky Mountaineer and Peru
The Ghan runs Adelaide to Darwin and back, March to November; the Indian Pacific crosses Sydney to Perth every Wednesday of the year. Rocky Mountaineer runs by daylight from April to October.
- Journey Beyond sells Advance Purchase, Everyday and Flexible fares; ask what each lets you change
- Andean Explorer: Cusco to Puno in one night or to Arequipa in two, crossing La Raya at about 4,335 m (agent’s timetable)
- Rocky Mountaineer GoldLeaf: a bi-level dome coach with a dining room downstairs
Find your train
Answer for the trip you’d actually enjoy. A tie at dinner sounds romantic until night three.
Matcher
Which luxury train fits you?
Five quick questions. Tap one answer each; the top three show below.
A night on the Orient-Express, hour by hour
One night, so every hour counts. These are the 2026 southbound times as Seat61 reports them; your confirmation has the final ones.
Eurostar from London
The train has started in Paris since 2024, so London guests ride Eurostar into Gare du Nord at 7:58pm.
Leave Paris Gare de l’Est
The maître d’ hands out dinner reservations soon after departure. Dinner is the dark-suit hour.
Breakfast in your compartment
A Continental breakfast arrives on a tray.
Lunch in the restaurant cars
The long daylight run through the mountains toward Italy.
Verona
The last stop before the lagoon.
Venice Santa Lucia
About twenty and a half hours after Paris. The fare ends on the platform, so book your Venice hotel.
Pair it with a cruise from Venice: our Venice cruise port guide covers getting from the station to the ship.
When to book, and what cancelling costs
Train fees bite earlier than most tour fees. Slide to your worst-case date before you pay a deposit.
Some of these trains run a few dozen guests a night, so the good cabins go first. Book once your dates are fixed, then insure straight after the deposit.
Seven Stars allocates places by lottery, and Glacier Express seats open 93 days ahead. Journey Beyond’s cheapest fares are labeled Advance Purchase, and the Blue Train’s spring departures cost about 23% more than the rest of the year.
Final payment lands early. Belmond wants the balance 56 days out on most journeys and 120 days out on its British sleepers; an agent’s Rovos FAQ puts Rovos at 90 days. Our how-far-ahead guide lines up the insurance windows.
Cancellation timeline
Slide to the day you might cancel
Three published schedules side by side. Your booking’s own conditions are the ones that count.
Belmond’s figures are its rest-of-world conditions, effective February 11, 2026; Paris–Istanbul is stricter (35% from booking). The Maharajas’ Express schedule is an agent’s published terms. An agent’s Rovos FAQ says the deposit is non-refundable and the whole fare is lost inside 90 days.
Pairing a train with a cruise or a tour
A luxury train rarely fills a vacation alone. The best trips land it next to a cruise or a tour, with a hotel night either side.
Many of these trains end in a cruise port. Rovos Rail and the Blue Train finish in Cape Town (our Cape Town port guide), and Rovos also runs to Durban (Durban port).
The Orient-Express ends in Venice, and La Dolce Vita leaves from Rome, close to Civitavecchia. The Royal Scotsman starts in Edinburgh (Edinburgh port), and the E&O loops from Singapore (Singapore cruise guide).
Seven Stars leaves from Hakata, Fukuoka’s main station (Fukuoka cruise port). The Indian Pacific starts in Sydney (Sydney cruise port), and Rocky Mountaineer leaves from Vancouver, a home port for Alaska cruises.
Tour companies fold trains into longer trips, too. Great Rail Journeys’ 2027 Grand Tour of South Africa spends 11 of its 16 nights aboard Rovos, from about $13,499 per person.
In Peru, the Andean Explorer slots into Machu Picchu tours (our Peru guide). In Canada, Rockies tours often include Rocky Mountaineer days.
Booking it through Seabound
There’s no fee for our help; the railway or tour company pays our commission. We price the train with the hotel nights either side, check single fares and line the cancellation terms up against a second option.
Train, plane or coach? Flying from Pretoria to Cape Town or Adelaide to Darwin is far quicker and cheaper. You take these trains for the train, not to get somewhere.
A coach tour sees more stops for less, and a daylight train like Rocky Mountaineer shows every mile. A sleeper trades some scenery in the dark for dinner, a bed and the feeling of crossing a country in your own room. Choose it for that.
Who a luxury train suits
Book it if
- You want the journey itself to be the highlight of a trip
- You like long dinners, early nights and waking up somewhere new
- Someone in your party would rather sit than hike, and still wants to see a country
- You’re adding two or three special nights to a cruise or a tour
- You’re happy to book months ahead and pay early
Look elsewhere if
- You need flexible dates; deposits and final payments come early
- You’re solo on a budget; most cabins are priced for two, with 50% or more added for one
- A tight connection would wreck the trip; build a buffer night
- You use a wheelchair and want Rovos; an agent’s FAQ says the train isn’t suitable
- You’d rather spend the money on more days; see scenic day trains
Our take
Pick by the night, not the brand. For most first-timers, two or three nights is the sweet spot: long enough to settle in, short enough to stay special.
For value, Rovos Rail and the Ghan include the most per dollar. For a once-in-a-lifetime night, the Orient-Express is still the one people mean.
Send us your month and the trains you’re weighing. We’ll price two of them side by side, with the hotel nights and the cancellation terms.

What luxury train travelers ask us
Which luxury train costs the most per night?
On entry-level fares, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express and the Royal Scotsman. A 2027 Historic cabin from Paris to Venice runs about €4,510 per person for one night, and Taste of the Highlands costs about £14,900 per double cabin for two nights. Both work out near US$5,000 per person per night at late-October 2026 exchange rates.
Which luxury train is the best value?
On price per night, Journey Beyond’s Ghan and Indian Pacific: a 2027 Gold Twin cabin starts around AU$1,060 to AU$1,200 a night per person, roughly US$750 to $840, with meals, drinks and off-train excursions included. Rovos Rail’s Pullman suite, about US$1,085 a night with all drinks, is the value pick in Africa.
Which luxury trains have a private shower in every cabin?
Rovos Rail, the Blue Train, the Britannic Explorer, the Royal Scotsman, the Andean Explorer and the Maharajas’ Express all put a private bathroom with a shower in every cabin. On the Ghan and Indian Pacific, Gold Twin cabins have a compact en suite. The Orient-Express is the exception: its Historic cabins have a washbasin, with shared restrooms at the end of the carriage.
Is there a dress code on luxury trains?
It depends on the train. The Orient-Express asks for a dark suit and tie at minimum in the evening, and Rovos Rail wants a collar and tie at dinner. The Royal Scotsman and Britannic Explorer ask men for a jacket at dinner. Journey Beyond suggests smart casual on the Ghan and says dressing up is optional.
Can children ride luxury trains?
Some welcome them. The Orient-Express takes children of any age and discounts under-12s sharing with an adult by 20%, and the Britannic Explorer carries under-2s free. Rovos Rail doesn’t accept children under 3, and agents say the Blue Train lets under-6s share their parents’ suite free. Rocky Mountaineer charges every age the same fare.
Is La Dolce Vita Orient Express the same as the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express?
No. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is Belmond’s train, run under a long-term license for the name. La Dolce Vita Orient Express is an Italian train from Arsenale with Accor’s Orient Express brand. It took its first passengers on April 4, 2025, and runs one- to four-night journeys from Rome, Venice and Palermo, from about €3,500 per person for one night.
How far ahead should I book a luxury train?
As soon as your dates are fixed, and insure right after the deposit. Belmond wants the balance 56 days out on most journeys and 120 days out on its British sleepers. Seven Stars in Kyushu allocates places by lottery, and Glacier Express seats open 93 days ahead.
Can I combine a luxury train with a cruise?
Yes, and it’s often the neatest way to do it. Rocky Mountaineer pairs with Alaska cruises from Vancouver, Rovos Rail and the Blue Train both end in Cape Town, and the Orient-Express ends in Venice. The Royal Scotsman runs from Edinburgh, and the Eastern & Oriental Express starts and ends in Singapore.
