Four ways to put land days around a cruise
You’ve picked the cruise. Now you want Rome, Denali or Banff as well. Start with who sells the land half.
- Madrid2 nights, pre-cruiseViking’s two-night Madrid extension, from $1,199 a person, before the ship.
- Barcelonadays 1–2, aboardYou board in Barcelona and the ship stays a second day in port.
- Sète & Marseilledays 3–4Two French ports on consecutive days.
- Monte Carloday 5Monaco. As at every Viking port, one guided tour is included.
- Livornodays 6–7Two days in port for Florence and Pisa.
- Rome2 nights, post-cruiseOff at Civitavecchia and into Viking’s two-night Rome stay, from $1,199.
Ports from Viking’s 2027 itinerary page, read October 26, 2026. Cruise from $2,599 a person, cruise-only for US residents. What each two-night stay includes beyond the hotel isn’t listed on that page; ask us.
Who sells the land half, and what that changes
The four ways differ less in price than in who you call when a flight is late. Tap through each.
The cruise line runs the land too
Princess owns five Alaska lodges and Holland America runs its own Denali Lodge and the McKinley Explorer domes, with 19 cruisetour itineraries for 2027. You book once, and the line moves you and your bags.
- Best for Alaska; the full comparison is on our Alaska cruisetours page
- Land meals are mostly extra outside escorted versions
- Watch the arrival time: on the Princess and Holland America itineraries we read, ships reach Whittier around 12:30 to 1:00am
The tour company builds in the ship
Globus and Cosmos lead the land days with a Tour Director, then put you on a ship. In the Rockies it’s an Alaska cruise; in Greece, an Aegean one.
- Globus’s 17-day Rockies package uses a 7-day Holland America cruise
- The Greek packages don’t name the ship on the pages we read; we confirm it for your date
- On Globus, final payment moves to 90 days when Holland America or Avalon is part of the trip
The cruise line adds nights at either end
Viking lists its pre- and post-cruise options on every itinerary page: plain two-night city stays, and fully guided three- to six-night add-ons like Tuscany, Iceland or the Rocky Mountaineer.
- Two-night stays from $999 (Barcelona, Bergen) to $1,399 (London, Oslo)
- Guided add-ons from $2,299 (Umbria, Norway by train) to $6,999 (Rocky Mountaineer)
- Ground transfers are included only when you buy Viking’s air
You book the land half
A cruise plus your own hotels, a coach tour that ends in your port, or a rental car. It’s usually cheapest and takes the most planning.
- Match the tour’s end city and date to the ship’s
- Leave a buffer night between a tour and an embarkation
- Our one-way rental guide covers dropping a car at the pier
River cruises do this too: Tauck’s Blue Danube spends nine nights aboard and two at the Fairmont Golden Prague, and Trafalgar’s Best of the Rhine & Amsterdam pairs a 7-night cruise with two hotel nights. See our river cruise guide.
Alaska and the Rockies: where combos began
The ship does the Inside Passage. Everything inland, from Denali to Lake Louise, is the land half.
| Combo (2027) | Days | Land half | Cruise half | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Princess Denali Explorer AA3 (cruisetour) | 11 | 3 nights: Denali, Mt. McKinley lodge, Anchorage | 7 nights Vancouver → Whittier | $1,324 inside, reseller |
| Holland America Denali & Yukon Y3L (cruisetour) | 15 | 10 nights: Denali, Fairbanks, Dawson City, Whitehorse | 4 nights Skagway → Vancouver | $4,169 inside, reseller |
| Viking Alaska + Denali Explorer (extension) | 16 | 5 guided nights after the ship | 10 nights Vancouver → Seward | $6,999 + $3,799 |
| Cosmos Western Canada by Rail with Alaska Cruise | 16 | Banff, Jasper, Rocky Mountaineer to Vancouver | Alaska cruise (line not named) | $6,334 |
| Globus Great Resorts of the Canadian Rockies + Alaska Cruise | 17 | Three Fairmonts, Rocky Mountaineer SilverLeaf | 7 days, Holland America | $9,733 |
| Tauck Alaska and the Yukon | 15 | Dawson City, Denali, Alyeska with a Tauck Director | 7 nights, Holland America | $9,990 |
Land-night counts from each itinerary; Globus and Cosmos don’t break theirs out on the pages we read.
Princess and Holland America prices are from US reseller listings on our Alaska cruisetours page; Viking, Globus, Cosmos and Tauck from their own pages. Per person, sharing, before flights.
Viking also sells a six-night Rocky Mountaineer journey before the cruise, from $6,999, and two-night stays in Vancouver ($1,199) and Anchorage ($1,099).
For Banff and Jasper on their own, see our Canadian Rockies tours; to drive Denali and the Kenai yourself, our Alaska rental-car guide. Book early in Alaska: Princess says its lodges often see peak dates full by October of the year before.
Europe: a tour at one end, a ship at the other
Europe’s best sights sit a train ride from the pier. Pick the tour by where it ends, then pick the ship.
In the Mediterranean the easy pairing is a coach tour that ends in your cruise port. Trafalgar’s Best of Italy – Premium runs Rome to Rome over 11 days, from $4,075, so it lines up with a cruise from Civitavecchia.
Cosmos’s 7-day Rome, Florence & Venice, from $1,599, ends in the Venice area. Look for a cruise starting at Venice or Trieste.
Greece comes packaged. Globus’s Greek Escape plus 7-night Idyllic Cruise is 11 days from Athens from $2,599, and its Iconic Aegean with 4-Night Cruise is 8 days from $2,949. Cosmos’s 15-day Greece & Aegean Islands Cruise adds Meteora, Olympia and Mycenae to a four-night cruise, from $3,999.
In Northern Europe, Viking’s 15-day British Isles Explorer, from $8,299, calls at Edinburgh and Dublin and offers a five-night Churchill’s Britain or a four-night Norway by train at either end.
| Viking extension (2027) | Nights | From, per person |
|---|---|---|
| Best of Barcelona, guided | 3 | $2,799 |
| Bilbao & San Sebastián, guided | 5 | $3,999 |
| Ultimate Italy – Tuscany, guided | 3 | $2,599 |
| Ultimate Italy – Umbria, guided | 3 | $2,299 |
| Best of Rome, guided | 3 | $2,799 |
| Best of Norway & Scenic Train, guided | 4 | $2,299 |
| Iceland & the Golden Circle, guided | 3 | $2,999 |
| Churchill’s Britain, guided | 5 | $4,499 |
Planning the land half on its own? Our Italy, Greece, Britain, Ireland and Spain & Portugal guides compare every operator. For the ships, start with Mediterranean or Northern Europe cruises.
Leave a night between them
A tour that ends on the morning your ship sails is a gamble on one coach transfer. Book a hotel night in the port city between the two, and tell us both bookings so we can line up the transfer.
Hotel nights: the line’s package or your own room
You’ll need a bed the night before. The question is whether the cruise line provides it.
From Viking’s 2027 itinerary pages, October 26, 2026. What each stay includes (tours, transfers, meals) isn’t on those pages; the Oslo stay includes a scenic train and is fully guided.
Two people in a room makes that roughly $1,000 to $1,400 a night for the pair. You’re paying for the transfer, a host and no planning.
Booking your own room is usually cheaper. Our port guides, from Barcelona to Vancouver, list hotels near each pier.
Tauck adds pre- and post-tour hotel nights on request, with free transfers to and from its approved hotels. Ask for the same on any tour or cruise you book with us.
One night before an international cruise is our minimum; two if it’s a city you came to see. Price the line’s stay against your own before you decide.
Open-jaw flights: in to one city, home from another
The flight is the piece people book last and get wrong first. Settle the two cities, then the dates.
Most combos start and end in different places. Viking’s Mediterranean runs Barcelona to Rome, its Alaska cruise Vancouver to Seward, its British Isles cruise Bergen to London.
Book those as one multi-city ticket, not two one-ways. If one leg runs late, a single ticket generally keeps the airline on the hook for the rest.
From Texas, Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston fly nonstop to Vancouver, and DFW to Anchorage, with a Houston summer nonstop from May 27, 2027. From Florida, Anchorage is a connection. Our Florida and Texas flight guide has the routes.
A ticket that matches the ship
Viking includes ground transfers only when you buy its air. Buy your own and you arrange the airport runs; check the arrival time against the pier before you pay.
Add up the days and the cost
Cruise nights plus land nights plus a travel day. This does the sum, and tells you how much of the trip is on land.
Combo planner
Cruise nights + land nights = your real trip
Our starting estimate is Viking’s 2027 Barcelona to Rome cruise with its Madrid stay before and its Rome stay after. Change any box.
Land cost can be an extension, a tour fare, or your hotel rate per person times the nights. Viking’s figures are from its own 2027 page, cruise-only, per person sharing. Tips, meals ashore and excursions beyond the included ones aren’t in these numbers.
Rather drive the land half yourself?
Not everyone wants a guide on land. If you’re happy behind the wheel, these pages pick up at the pier.
A rental car turns the days after a cruise into your own tour. It’s often the cheapest way to see the Kenai or Tuscany at your own pace.
Start with our port-by-port guides: Civitavecchia and Tuscany and Lake Bracciano; Barcelona and Montserrat and the Costa Brava; Piraeus and Sounion, Corinth and Delphi.
For Alaska and the Pacific Northwest: Seward and Whittier, Kenai Fjords and Denali, Seattle, Mount Rainier and the Olympic Peninsula, Vancouver and Whistler and the Sea-to-Sky. In Britain, Southampton and Stonehenge and the New Forest.
Skip the car in Rome, Venice or central London. A train and a hotel near the station will serve you better.
Port guides for the cities at either end
Every combo has a port at one end. These guides cover the transfers, hotels and first-night logistics.

Which combo fits you
Answer four questions and we’ll point you to a kind of combo. Then tick through the list before you pay a deposit.
Matcher
Find your combo
Four taps. We match the kind of combo to your cruise, how much you want handled and how many land nights you have.
Before you book both halves
Combine them if
- You want the interior and the coast in one trip
- You’re flying a long way and want more than a week for it
- Denali, Banff, Rome or Meteora matter as much as the ship
- You’d rather one company handle the transfers
Look elsewhere if
- You only have a week; pick one and do it well
- You hate moving hotels; stay on the ship and add a single city night
- You want total freedom; book the cruise and a car
- The land price doubles your budget; a longer cruise may suit you better
Our take
In Alaska, buy the cruisetour or the Rockies package. The lodges and the rail are hard to piece together yourself.
In Europe, book the tour that ends in your port, then the ship, then a hotel night between. It usually costs less per night than a guided extension, and you see more.

What people ask us about cruise and land combos
What is a cruisetour?
A cruise and a land tour sold as one booking, with the hotels, transfers and some sightseeing included. In Alaska, Princess and Holland America sell them with their own lodges at Denali; a typical one adds two to ten land nights to a seven-night cruise.
Should I book the cruise line’s hotel extension or my own hotel?
Book the line’s if you want transfers and a guide handled, or if you’re buying the line’s air, since Viking includes ground transfers only with Viking Air. Book your own if price matters: Viking’s two-night city stays work out to roughly $500 to $700 a person a night, and you can usually beat that on a hotel alone.
How many nights before a cruise should I arrive?
At least one for an international embarkation, two if it’s a city you want to see. A delayed flight can’t make the ship wait.
Can I add a land tour to a Mediterranean cruise?
Yes. Book a coach tour that ends where your cruise starts, such as Trafalgar’s Best of Italy – Premium, which runs Rome to Rome over 11 days, before a cruise from Civitavecchia. Or take the line’s extension: Viking offers three guided nights in Tuscany or Umbria after its Barcelona to Rome cruise.
What is an open-jaw flight?
A ticket into one city and home from another, booked as one multi-city trip. Most one-way cruises and combos need one: into Barcelona and home from Rome, or into Vancouver and home from Anchorage.
Can I combine the Canadian Rockies with an Alaska cruise?
Yes. Globus sells a 17-day Great Resorts of the Canadian Rockies with Rocky Mountaineer and Alaska Cruise from $9,733, and Cosmos a 16-day Western Canada by Rail with Alaska Cruise from $6,334, both for 2027. Viking offers a six-night Rocky Mountaineer pre-cruise extension from $6,999.
Is a Greek island cruise with a land tour a good idea?
It’s one of the easiest combos to book. Globus and Cosmos both sell Athens-based tours with a three-, four- or seven-night Aegean cruise inside, from $2,599 for 11 days on Globus’s Greek Escape plus 7-night Idyllic Cruise. Ask us which ship your date uses.
Can I rent a car after my cruise instead?
Yes, and in Alaska, Tuscany or around Seattle it can be the cheapest way to add land days. Our rental-car guides cover one-way drop-offs and the drives near each port.
