Stonehenge, the New Forest and Winchester by Rental Car from Southampton

These are the days a Southampton car earns its rate. Stonehenge is about 32 miles from Southampton Central by our routing, Salisbury Cathedral about 23 and Beaulieu, in the New Forest, about 13 — short hops by American standards, though in the forest, hitting an animal carries a legal duty to call the police.

How far Southampton’s day trips really are

Drives are our OpenStreetMap routing from Southampton Central station, free-flow; ticket and parking from each site’s own page, read Oct 3, 2026. Checked Oct 3, 2026

Nothing on that list is more than about an hour from the city in free-flowing traffic.

One rental day reaches any of them — two, if they point the same way.

Stonehenge and Salisbury pair naturally. Both lie northwest.

Beaulieu and the forest roads sit southwest of the city.

Winchester is the short one, about 13 miles up the M3 — close enough that a car is optional, not essential.

Every price and hour here is for the date we read it, Oct 3, 2026.

The dollar figures use the European Central Bank’s rate for Oct 2, about $1.32 to the pound — your card will land near it, not on it.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge from the Southampton docks: hours, parking and the ticket we can’t price

Stonehenge is the day trip on this page with the tightest clock. English Heritage’s price table wouldn’t load for us, so this section has no ticket figure in it.

English Heritage lists Stonehenge open daily 9:30 to 5 (last entry 3 PM), off the A303 at SP4 7DE, with “Book early to save up to 15%”; its ticket prices didn’t render for us, so we print none. Parking is £4 for non-members, by the RingGo app, and English Heritage doesn’t say whether ticket holders pay it too.

Last entry at 3 PM matters on a disembarkation day.

Off the ship at 9, a car collected by 10 makes it with hours to spare — a car collected at 2 doesn’t.

The drive is about 32.5 miles and 49 minutes from Southampton Central by our routing, or roughly 65 miles there and back.

Book online. English Heritage says early booking saves up to 15% — and tickets are valid all day, so the slot is a start time, not a deadline.

Salisbury is about 23 miles from the city on the same side, which makes the pair one day, not two.

New Forest

New Forest ponies and the legal duty if you hit one

The New Forest is the only place on this page where the animals are the hazard, and the park authority counts what that costs.

The New Forest National Park Authority: “It is a legal requirement to report an animal accident to the Police as soon as possible”, and within 24 hours, by 999 or 101.

The agisters, the Verderers’ stockmen, attended 109 animal accidents in 2025, and 47 animals died. That’s about two accidents a week, our arithmetic — routine, not freak.

“Drive slowly, especially at night, and give animals a wide berth”; don’t feed or pet the ponies (“you may be fined”).

Night is when the authority asks for the slowest driving, so time the drive back from Beaulieu for daylight if you can.

Verderers 02380 282052 (weekdays 9 to 5); Forestry England 0300 067 4600 (24 hours).

Save both numbers before you set off.

Report it even if the animal walks away, and tell the rental company the same day — the damage excess on your contract doesn’t care what you hit.

    The rental, line by line
Against the other ways to do it

Our sum, in pounds — the booking screen has the real one. The £40 a day is an assumption; Discover Cars’ Southampton page averaged £37 on Oct 3, 2026. Tickets are Beaulieu’s 2026 advance adult price, and parking there is free. Fuel is 26 miles at 30 mpg, with the RAC’s 174.71p petrol (Oct 2) converted to £6.61 a US gallon by us. UK quotes already carry 20% VAT, so none is added, and no brand prints a location fee, so that box starts at 0%. We found no UK car-seat price: put a seat charge in the coverage box.

Beaulieu’s 2026 ticket, the National Motor Museum, Palace House, the Abbey and the monorail, is £31.50 on the day or £28.35 in advance for an adult, with free parking for up to 1,000 cars, off the M27 at junction 2.

On those assumptions, two adults come to about £102.43 (about US$135) for the day — car, fuel and tickets, our arithmetic.

The tickets are more than half of it.

Booking ahead saves £3.15 a head on Beaulieu’s own prices. On the day, the same two tickets cost £63, not £56.70.

We found no organised-tour price to set beside it — the alternative row is yours to fill.

    Cathedrals

Winchester and Salisbury cathedrals: hours, tickets and parking

Two cathedral cities sit within an hour of the docks, and their parking rules differ: Salisbury sells a day in the Close, Winchester has no space at all.

Salisbury Cathedral: £12.50 in advance or £14.50 on the day, under-12s free, Monday to Saturday 9:30 to 5 and Sunday 12:30 to 4, with an original 1215 Magna Carta in the Chapter House; parking in the Close is £10 all day.

Two adults booked ahead plus a day in the Close is £35 (about US$45) — our arithmetic, before the car.

Both open at 12:30 on Sundays — so a Sunday disembarkation plus a cathedral means a slow morning, not an early one.

Winchester Cathedral: an annual pass at £14.90 at the door or £13.90 online, Monday to Saturday 9 to 5 and Sunday 12:30 to 3, and “no parking within the Cathedral Close or the immediate vicinity”; use the city car parks or the Park & Ride off the M3.

Online saves £1 a head at Winchester.

The pass lasts a year — useful only if your next sailing is soon.

A car buys little in Winchester itself.

It earns its rate when Winchester is a stop on the way somewhere else.

    Portsmouth

Portsmouth’s dockyard by car, and the clean-air zone that skips you

Portsmouth is the easy one: about 36 minutes from the station, and a gate the site tells you to use.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard: “Tickets from £36”, open all year, last entry 4:30 in summer (4 PM from November); drive in on the M275 to Victory Gate and avoid Trafalgar Gate. The site doesn’t print a parking charge.

Southampton isn’t on gov.uk’s list of Clean Air Zones, and Portsmouth’s zone is Class B, which doesn’t charge private cars. A rental pays nothing to enter either city on that count — the dockyard ticket is the cost.

The drive is about 20.5 miles and 36 minutes from Southampton Central, our routing.

Highclere Castle sits the other way, about 34 miles north. Highclere Castle says “In all cases, tickets must be pre-booked”; its shop showed dated events (Christmas from Nov 19 to Dec 19) but no prices or parking we could print, so call 01635 888518 before you build a day around it.

    Road rules

English road rules that catch American drivers on country roads

Four rules from gov.uk. The fines are real, and a camera ticket finds you through the rental company.

National limits for cars: 30 mph in built-up areas in England, 60 on single carriageways, 70 on dual carriageways and motorways; the minimum speeding penalty is a £100 fine and 3 points, and camera notices go to the registered keeper, which for a rental is the hire company.

Those are maximums, not targets — a 60 on a narrow forest lane is legal and foolish.

Holding a phone or sat nav while driving is illegal even stopped at lights: 6 points and a £200 fine; hands-free is allowed if you don’t hold it. Set the satnav before you pull out.

England’s drink-drive limit is 35 micrograms per 100 ml of breath or 80 mg per 100 ml of blood; Scotland’s is lower. A pub lunch with a pint is where a touring day goes wrong, so let the passenger have it.

Children must use a child car seat until they’re 12 or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first, and only EU-approved seats count (height-based R129 or weight-based R44); gov.uk doesn’t mention US-certified seats. Bring your own seat and check its label, or ask the desk for one.

    FAQ

Driving out of Southampton for the day: questions

How far is Stonehenge from Southampton cruise port?

About 32.5 miles and 49 minutes from Southampton Central station by our free-flow routing; the terminals are a short drive from the station. English Heritage lists Stonehenge open daily 9:30 to 5, last entry 3 PM.

Do you have to report hitting a pony in the New Forest?

Yes. The New Forest National Park Authority says it is a legal requirement to report an animal accident to the police as soon as possible, on 999 or 101. Forestry England’s 24-hour line is 0300 067 4600.

How much is parking at Stonehenge?

English Heritage lists £4 for non-members, paid through the RingGo app; members display a sticker. Its page doesn’t say whether ticket holders also pay it.

Is there parking at Winchester Cathedral?

No. The cathedral says there’s no parking within the Close or the immediate vicinity; use the city car parks or the Park & Ride off the M3.

Does Portsmouth charge cars for its clean air zone?

No. Portsmouth’s zone is Class B, which doesn’t charge private cars, and Southampton isn’t on gov.uk’s list of clean air zones at all.

Can you see Stonehenge on the way from Southampton to London?

Not on the direct route. Our Heathrow routing uses the M3 and M25, while Stonehenge is about 32 miles northwest of Southampton off the A303, so build it in as its own leg.
