Off the ship in Southampton before the desks open
Disembarkation is early and the desks keep office hours. Most of this page is about the gap between the two.
Cunard’s disembarkation runs from about 7:30 to 10 AM, by grade and location, and it can’t take requests for times.
Enterprise Central Docks opens at 7 Monday to Wednesday but at 8 from Thursday through Sunday, so late in the week the earliest walkers can beat the desk.
A short wait, not a crisis.
There’s a taxi rank outside each terminal, and Southampton Airport warns that taxis “may be very busy while the ships are disembarking” — so book the cab to the desk before you leave the ship, not at the rank.
Royal Caribbean sells airport-to-pier transfers on sailing day and pier-to-airport on debarkation day only. If the plan is a flight rather than a car, that’s the line’s offer; the Heathrow page prices the other options.
Nobody delivers a car to the terminal. You go to the desk, bags and all.
Southampton desks on the morning you dock
Pick the day the ship docks and the time you’ll walk in. The answer is in UK time.
Try Sunday at 9:30 first. Enterprise Central Docks and the airport desks are open — Hertz and Thrifty never open that day.
Then try Saturday at 12:45.
Hertz shut at noon and Thrifty at 12:30, so a slow Saturday disembarkation has missed both.
A weekday is easy — every desk on the list is open by 8:30.
Handing a Southampton rental back: drop boxes and the 4 PM Sunday close
Returning is the half of the rental where hours matter most. Southampton’s town desks don’t take a car back after closing.
Enterprise’s page: “After-Hours Returns Unavailable.” Despite the “Central Docks” name, it says nothing about cruise terminals.
Bring it back after 4 on a Sunday and it’s yours until Monday morning — and so is the extra day.
Hertz on West Quay Road takes a car after hours only “with prior arrangements” — park in its area, documents on the driver’s seat, keys in the secure box.
Southampton Airport is the forgiving option. Avis takes 24-hour drop-offs, Sixt lists 24-hour returns, and Enterprise wants the keys in its box inside the terminal.
Every Gatwick brand offers an after-hours return, per the airport. Avis’s South Terminal desk keeps the shortest weekend: Saturday 7 to 3, Sunday 8 to 8:45 PM.
At Heathrow, Avis runs 24/7, Enterprise has an after-hours key box, and Sixt’s Terminal 2 desk has a key drop by the booth — Hertz there needs prior arrangement.
Whichever desk it is, photograph the fuel gauge, the mileage and all four sides.
A drop box means nobody checks the car with you.
Driving from the Southampton docks to a Heathrow flight
Plenty of passengers fly home the day they dock. A one-way rental is one way to reach Heathrow, though seldom on price.
The rental, line by line
Our arithmetic in pounds, not a quote. The £40 a day is assumed; Discover Cars’ pound-priced Southampton page averaged £37 on Oct 3, 2026. Fuel is Mayflower to Heathrow, 68 miles at 30 mpg, priced from the RAC’s Oct 2 petrol average of 174.71p a litre (£6.61 a US gallon, our conversion). VAT is already in UK quotes; no premium-location amount is published, so that box starts at 0%. Avis says a car rented elsewhere and returned to Heathrow pays a one-way fee, which no brand prints — type yours in the drop box. Car seats add nothing, since we found no UK price.
By our routing, Mayflower to Terminal 5 is about 67.5 miles and 78 minutes; Ocean is about 63.3 miles and 77.
Princess says book nothing out of Heathrow earlier than 7 hours after the ship arrives — 7 and a half from Gatwick.
Docking at 7 AM, that’s a 2 PM flight at the earliest.
Before a one-way fee, our car comes to about £54.98 (about US$75). Set beside it the broker’s three-seat car at £121.99 — for two, that’s the fairer comparison, not the coach.
A Southampton-to-Heathrow car spares the bags a coach and adds a desk queue at each end. For a family flying home that day, we’d price the booked car first.
Touring first is the better reason to collect. Stonehenge stops admitting at 3 PM, so a car off the ship can fit it in before a hotel near Heathrow.
The Itchen Bridge toll, and the two prices Southampton prints
Southampton has one toll road, a bridge across the Itchen, and its own council can’t agree what a car pays.
The Itchen Bridge (A3025) between the city centre and Woolston is the one toll road in Southampton: the council’s toll page says £1.00 for a car (40p for residents), paid by contactless, SmartCities card or exact coins, but a council news story says the non-resident car toll rose to £1.20 and the Class 3 toll for large vans and 4x4s to £1.60 from “Monday, 7 April”, year not given.
That’s a £0.20 difference, and the toll page and the newsroom can’t both be current. The toll page cites an order that took effect on Feb 10, 2024, and 7 April last fell on a Monday in 2025 — so our reading is that £1.20 is the newer figure. Budget for it.
Carry contactless, not a fistful of change.
Class 2 covers cars, small vans and small 4x4s up to 1.33 m tall, so a taller SUV may pay the Class 3 rate — £1.40 on the toll page itself.
It links the city centre and Ocean Village with Woolston. Our Heathrow route doesn’t cross it, but the router sent one Gatwick route over it — so if your satnav does the same, have the toll ready. Our calculators leave it out.
Dollar figures on this page convert at about $1.32 to the pound, the ECB rate for Oct 2, 2026; your card’s rate won’t match exactly.
Every extra a Southampton rental can pick up
These are the charges we could put a figure or a status to. Southampton itself adds only the bridge.
| Charge | Amount | What it means for you | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| VAT | 20% | Normally already inside a UK quote; we add none | Confirmed |
| Premium-location fee | Not printed | Avis, Europcar, Sixt and Hertz name one at airports and stations without an amount | Checked |
| Additional driver (Enterprise) | £19.11 a day | At airport and premium desks; £15.60 elsewhere | Confirmed |
| Itchen Bridge, a car | £1.00 or £1.20 | Two council pages disagree; taller SUVs may pay £1.40 or £1.60 | Conflict |
| Motorway tolls, Heathrow route | None found | M25, M3, A27 and A33, no tolled step | Our routing |
| Southampton Clean Air Zone | None | Not on gov.uk’s list; Portsmouth’s Class B zone skips cars | Confirmed |
From gov.uk, Avis UK, Europcar, Enterprise and Southampton City Council, read Oct 3, 2026 — Checked Oct 3, 2026
Enterprise charges an additional driver £19.11 a day at airport and premium locations and £15.60 elsewhere. Two drivers on a three-day airport rental is £57.33 for the second one, our arithmetic.
Avis UK charges a Premium Location Fee at airports, train stations and city centres and says it is “included in your booking quote”, without an amount. Sixt’s terms say premium location fees apply at airports and train stations, with no amount.
If a contract line has a name and no amount, ask what it comes to — before you sign, not after.
Book the morning-after car for the desk that’s open
Choose the pick-up by the day the ship docks, then by the rate.
Sunday means Enterprise Central Docks before 4, or the airport; a weekday means any of them.
If the car ends at Heathrow, set that as the drop-off so the one-way charge shows.
- Pick-up: near the docks or the airport
- Drop-off: where the trip ends
- One-way fee in the total
- Free cancellation up to 48 hrs before pickup
The morning you dock in Southampton: questions
