Renting a Car After a Dover Cruise: Desk Hours, the A20 and the Run to Heathrow

Ships are usually alongside by about 6 AM. The Port publishes no disembarkation times — your line’s disembarkation letter is the only timetable you’ll get.

Read it before you book a car, not after.

The pickup time on the rental should come from that letter.

Carnival’s debarkation transfers start leaving the port around 6:30 to 7:30 AM. Holland America sells a Windsor tour with a Heathrow drop for flights after 4:45 PM.

There is no left luggage at the terminals before or after a cruise, per the Port and Holland America. That matters more here than anywhere else on the trip — a Sunday wait for a desk means waiting with every bag you packed.

The Port says taxis wait at the rank when you come off a cruise. Holland America says Uber isn’t available in Dover.

The rank is the plan.

With the defaults, two of you come to about £55 before the drop charge, roughly US$70. Carnival’s transfer for two is $219.98, and a fixed-fare sedan £183.82, about US$245.

The car looks like the low number until the drop charge arrives.

It’s a one-way, not a round trip, and nobody prints that fee in advance.

That sedan fare is published for the Heathrow-to-Dover direction. Ask the firm for the return run before you rely on it.

Carnival’s port-to-airport transfers cost $109.99 a person, and Carnival says return flights can’t leave before 1 PM. A car buys you a later start, or a stop at Leeds Castle on the way — a detour, not a day.

Gatwick’s South Terminal is about 79.8 miles away by our routing, and every desk there takes after-hours returns. Avis at Heathrow’s Northrop Road site is open around the clock; Hertz Heathrow runs 5 AM to midnight.

Fill up before the airport. Enterprise charges up to £15 (about US$20) plus the fuel if the tank comes back lower — Sixt expects it full unless you prepaid.

Check which fuel the car takes. The RAC put UK unleaded at 174.71p a litre and diesel at a record 200.01p on Oct 2, 2026 — at 3.785 litres to the US gallon, unleaded is about £6.61 a gallon, our conversion, so a diesel costs about £7.57 a US gallon by the same sum.

Dover TAP queues freight in the left lane of the coastbound A20 into Dover, and everyone else uses the second lane — and the A20 is how you reach the Western Docks.

You’re heading inland, against that queue.

It bites less on the way out.

It still slows any taxi coming in to collect you — a lane problem, not a road closure.

Further out, Operation Brock’s contraflow on the M20 can slow the London-bound side too. When it’s active, gov.uk says expect signs, diversions and speed restrictions.

Kent County Council has £20m for a Dover border-access project it says could cut Brock and TAP use by up to 80% — with no completion date yet. Until then, the summer weeks are the ones to plan around.

Heathrow and Gatwick runs skip the Dartford Crossing on our routing. Heading for Stansted, you’ll cross at Dartford — £3.50, paid online by midnight the next day.

Search with the pick-up in Dover and the time you’ll actually arrive, then set the airport as the drop-off.
