Leaving London for Dover: when a car is worth the trouble
From a London hotel, the drive is optional in a way the ride from the airport isn’t.
Take the train unless there’s a stop on the way, or enough of you that four fares outweigh a car and its one-way fee. Collect a rental in central London on a weekday and you start inside the Congestion Charge zone.
Spending a few nights in London first changes the car question.
It looks different from a hotel near King’s Cross than from an arrivals hall.
The train from St Pancras puts you in Dover Priory in about an hour. The car takes roughly 1 hr 49 min before traffic, our routing, and starts with London’s charges.
Collecting a car outside the centre helps.
So does collecting it in Dover after the train, for the day you want to drive — the Dover desks are a mile from the ship.
Sailing with Viking? It embarks at Greenwich, not here, and only calls at Dover.
Check the port on your booking before you price either option.
A central London pickup, dropped in Dover: the one-way priced
Two travellers, one day, a car collected in central London and left in Dover. Add the drop charge from your quote.
The rental, line by line
Figures in pounds, ours, not the company’s. A £32 day is assumed; VAT is counted as already included; the city-centre premium fee starts at 0%. Fuel is 78.3 miles from the St Pancras area, our routing, at 30 mpg and £6.61 a US gallon, our conversion of the RAC’s Oct 2 unleaded average. No brand publishes a London-to-Dover drop fee, so that box starts empty. London charges stay out of the total; the table below lists them.
With the defaults the car comes to about £49 for two: £32 for the day and about £17 of fuel. Two high-speed fares are £97.20, and two slower ones from Charing Cross £57.80 (about US$75).
At four travellers the fast train costs £194.40 (about US$255) — the point where the car, even with a drop charge, starts to compete.
That looks like a win for the car until you type the drop charge — and any London charge from the table below.
Enterprise: “Any applicable one-way fee will be clearly shown during the reservation process”. Avis says one-way fees are “included in your quote” and vary by route. Hertz says a fee “may be charged based on the distance” between the two locations.
We found no brand that prints a London-to-Dover drop fee either.
Price the one-way on the booking screen before you assume the car wins.
Sixt’s terms charge £19.99 (about US$25), incl. VAT, if you return to a different station from the one in your one-way agreement. Book the drop at the desk you’ll actually use — our one-way guide covers how drop charges usually work.
Every charge a London rental can pick up on its way to Dover
None of these is large on its own. Missed and handled by the rental company, each one grows.
| Charge | How much | When it touches a Dover trip | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| VAT | 20% | Normally already inside a UK rental price; Sixt prints its fees “incl. VAT” | Confirmed |
| Premium-location fee | Not published | Named by Avis, Hertz, Europcar and Sixt at airports and stations, never priced | No amount |
| Dart Charge (Dartford) | £3.50 a car | Not on our Heathrow or Gatwick route; pay by midnight the next day | Confirmed |
| Congestion Charge | £18 a day (TfL’s main page still said £15) | Only if you drive into central London in hours; rose on Jan 2, 2026, per the BVRLA | Check TfL |
| ULEZ | £12.50 a day | Only for a car that misses the standard; Avis says its Heathrow fleet meets it | Confirmed |
| Blackwall Tunnel | Not captured | Charged since April 2025; TfL’s amounts didn’t show for us | Couldn’t read |
| Sixt admin fee | £40 a charge | Each fine or charge Sixt handles for you | Confirmed |
From gov.uk, TfL, Sixt and Avis, read Oct 3, 2026 — Checked Oct 3, 2026
The Congestion Charge rose to £18 (about US$25) a day (£21 if paid within three days) on January 2, 2026, per the rental industry body BVRLA and TfL’s consultation — though TfL’s main charge page still read £15 when we checked on Oct 4, 2026. It applies 7 AM to 6 PM weekdays and noon to 6 PM at weekends and on bank holidays, so budget £18 and check TfL on the day. On a weekday morning pickup inside the zone, that’s £18 before you reach the river.
Miss it and the penalty is £180 (about US$240), cut to £90 if paid within 14 days — still about US$120 at the lower rate. Enterprise says the renter pays the London Congestion Charge for each day the car is driven in the zone.
Pay it yourself, the same day.
Nobody at the counter will remind you.
The ULEZ charge is £12.50 (about US$17) a day across all London boroughs, for vehicles that don’t meet the standard — Avis says its Heathrow fleet does. If your brand doesn’t say the same, ask before you drive off.
Our central-London routing went through the Blackwall Tunnel, which TfL has charged since April 7, 2025, with peak rates weekday mornings northbound and evenings southbound — TfL’s page didn’t show the amounts to our reader, so we don’t print one.
From the centre our routing used Blackwall, not Dartford. If you do cross the Thames at Dartford, it’s £3.50 for a car, paid online by midnight the next day — there are no booths.
Sixt charges a £40 (about US$55) administration fee for every fine or charge it handles for you, on top of the charge itself. Europcar’s terms make you pay congestion and parking charges and add a third-party administration charge, priced in a tariff guide we didn’t read.
St Pancras, Charing Cross or Victoria: the car-free starts
Four ways down without a rental, all of them leaving from central London.
| Service | From | Time | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Southeastern high-speed | St Pancras | About 67 minutes, fastest 63 | From £48.60 Anytime Day Single |
| Southeastern mainline | Charing Cross | About 112 minutes | From £28.90 |
| National Express 007 | Victoria Coach Station | About 3.5 hours, to Dover town | Not on the timetable |
| Holland America coach | Victoria Coach Station | Leaves about 10:30 AM | Not published |
Southeastern, National Express and Holland America pages, read Oct 3, 2026. Checked Oct 3, 2026
Southeastern’s high-speed trains run St Pancras to Dover Priory in about 1 hour 7 minutes (fastest 1 hour 3), around 42 direct a day, with an Anytime Day Single from £48.60 (about US$65). The first leaves at 6:37 AM Monday to Saturday (8:37 on Sunday), the last at 11:37 PM (10:37 Sunday).
National Rail says fares are frozen until March 2027 — so a fare you see now should hold for a sailing before then.
National Express 007 runs London Victoria to Dover’s Pencester Road bus station in about 3.5 hours via Canterbury and Folkestone — it stops in town, not at the terminal, and the timetable shows no fares. The Port quotes 95 minutes by coach to London, which doesn’t match that timetable.
Holland America runs a coach from Victoria Coach Station at about 10:30 AM, price not published. Carnival’s London page lists a Victoria Coach Station pickup at 11:30 AM on embarkation day, with no price shown.
Every one of these ends somewhere other than the gangway, so plan the taxi. The last-mile section covers Dover Priory to the ship.
Driving out of London toward the Western Docks
The route we priced, so you know what you’re signing up for after the paperwork.
Our routing from the St Pancras area runs east on the A501, A11 and A13, under the Thames through the Blackwall Tunnel, then down the A2 and M2 toward the coast.
That’s about 78.3 miles. The A2 comes down into Dover by the Eastern Docks, and the seafront A20 takes you west to the cruise berths on the other side of the harbour.
Type CT17 9DQ, not “Port of Dover.” The ferry signs pull you toward the Eastern Docks. If your satnav sends you down the M20 and A20 instead, lorries may be queuing in the left lane into town under Dover TAP — keep to the second lane.
A satnav reacting to traffic may pick another line, Dartford included. If it does, pay the Dart Charge by midnight the next day.
Book a London-to-Dover one-way with the drop showing
Search with Dover as the return location. A London-to-London price isn’t the one you’re buying.
Discover Cars’ Heathrow page showed “from £13” a day on Oct 3, 2026 — a round-trip floor, and a one-way from central London will price above it.
Conversions to dollars use the ECB reference rate for Oct 2, 2026, about $1.32 for each pound. Card rates differ.

London to Dover for a sailing: questions
How far is London from the Dover cruise terminal by car?
About 78.3 miles and 1 hr 49 min from the St Pancras area without traffic, by our routing through the Blackwall Tunnel and down the A2 and M2.
Is it cheaper to take the train or rent a car from London to Dover?
For one or two people, usually the train. Southeastern’s Anytime Day Single from St Pancras starts at £48.60; a one-way rental adds a drop fee no brand publishes, plus any London charges.
Who pays the London Congestion Charge on a hire car driven to Dover?
You do. Enterprise says the renter pays it for each day the car is driven in the zone. It’s £18 a day since January 2, 2026, per the BVRLA (TfL’s main page still said £15 when we checked); an unpaid charge brings a £180 penalty, halved if paid within 14 days.
Does the London to Dover drive use the Dartford Crossing?
Not on our routing from central London, which used the Blackwall Tunnel; TfL charges that tunnel too. Our Stansted route does cross at Dartford, £3.50 for a car.
How do I get from London Victoria to Dover cruise port?
National Express 007 runs to Dover town in about 3.5 hours, then you need a taxi to the terminals. Holland America runs its own coach from Victoria Coach Station at about 10:30 AM for its guests.
What one-way fee do rental companies charge from London to Dover?
None that we found publishes one. Enterprise says the fee shows during booking, Avis that it’s in the quote, and Hertz that it may depend on distance. Sixt charges £19.99 if you return somewhere other than the agreed station.
