Heathrow or Gatwick to the Dover Cruise Port: Rent the Car or Book the Ride?

Gatwick is the closer airport, about 79.8 miles from its South Terminal to the cruise terminals by our routing; Heathrow is about 103.7 from its central terminal area. Either way the car is a one-way rental with a drop charge nobody publishes, two hours on the left after a night flight, and a Kent motorway that can turn into a contraflow at short notice. The calculators below price both airports against Carnival’s transfer, fixed-fare cars and the train.

Two airports

Gatwick is closer to the Western Docks, and its desks are easier

Both big London airports work for a Dover sailing. One is meaningfully nearer, and the counters show it.

If you can choose

If you can choose, fly into Gatwick. The drive is about 24 miles shorter, our routing, the rental desks sit at the terminal instead of a shuttle ride away, and every Gatwick desk takes cars back after hours.

Gatwick’s desks are in the lower forecourt of both terminals, a short walk, with no shuttle. Alamo, Enterprise, Europcar and National open 7 AM to 11 PM — Avis and Budget close at 9:45, Hertz at 8.

Heathrow’s desks are in the arrivals halls of Terminals 2 to 5, and the cars sit off-terminal, a shuttle ride away. Heathrow names Avis, Hertz, Alamo, Sixt, Europcar and Budget; Enterprise runs its own lot on Northern Perimeter Road. Hertz Heathrow, Northern Perimeter Road West, opens 5 AM to midnight daily, by free shuttle; Sixt has an in-terminal desk at Terminal 2 arrivals, 6 AM to midnight, with a 24-hour key drop.

The Port quotes 76 minutes from Gatwick (78 on its cruise home page), 95 from Heathrow and 110 from Stansted; Holland America puts Heathrow at 105 miles and about 2.5 hours. Our routing says 1 hr 28 min and 1 hr 55 min — without traffic, which on the M25 is a polite fiction.

Use the longer figure when you plan.

Boarding windows don’t move for a jam — the ship sails on time, not on yours.

Avis warns that being dropped at Gatwick to collect a car now means a drop-off zone charge — a charge on whoever drops you, not on your rental.

    The rental, line by line
Against the other ways to do it

Pounds, our arithmetic. The £32 base is our assumption; the premium-location box starts at 0% because no brand prints the amount, and VAT is already inside UK prices. Fuel prices 103.7 miles from Heathrow’s central terminal area, our routing, at 30 mpg and £6.61 a US gallon (RAC unleaded, Oct 2, 2026, converted by us). The drop charge sits at £0 until you type one, since none is published. No UK child-seat price turned up, so seats add £0.

With the defaults, two people come to about £55 by car: £32 for the day and about £23 of fuel. That beats Carnival’s transfer for two, about £167, and a fixed-fare sedan at £183.82 — on paper.

The paper leaves out the one-way charge.

No brand prints a Heathrow-to-Dover or Gatwick-to-Dover one-way fee — the booking screen is the only place it shows, so it stays at £0 until your quote fills it.

Add it, and the gap can close fast.

Run the same search with a return to Heathrow — the difference is your drop charge.

Holland America quotes about £275 (about US$365) from Gatwick and £225 (about US$295) from Heathrow by taxi, oddly lower for the longer run — treat those as a ballpark, not a tariff.

The train line is incomplete on purpose: the high-speed fare from St Pancras, without the Tube from Heathrow or the taxi at Dover Priory. From Heathrow, the Piccadilly line reaches St Pancras in just over an hour with no change.

    Gatwick

Gatwick to Dover, priced the same way

Same boxes, shorter drive. Gatwick’s published taxi fares come in lower too.

Against the other ways to do it

Same assumptions as the Heathrow box: £32 a day, nothing added for VAT, a 0% premium fee until a quote says otherwise, unleaded at £6.61 a US gallon. 79.8 miles from the South Terminal, our routing. Carnival charges in dollars, so its $109.99 shows here as about £83 at the ECB rate.

From Gatwick the defaults come to about £50 for the car, with fuel nearer £18.

The fixed-fare sedan is £146.60, about US$195, and the seven-seater £196.75. Twelve Transfers starts at £190 (about US$250) from Heathrow and £165 (about US$220) from Gatwick for up to eight people.

For four or more with cruise luggage, a minivan fare splits better than it looks — and it skips the return desk entirely.

Carnival sells Heathrow and Gatwick transfers to the port at $109.99 a person each way — your flight must land before 11 AM, and on the way home flights can’t leave before 1 PM. Carnival’s Gatwick coach leaves at 11 AM, so a late landing rules it out.

      At the desk

What a London airport counter asks an American renter for

The paperwork is close to what you’d see at home. The insurance language isn’t.

Enterprise needs a major debit or credit card for the deposit, proof of return travel and your accommodation details, and won’t take a digital licence.

Enterprise’s minimum age is 25; drivers aged 19 to 24 are pointed to Enterprise Car Club instead. Hertz rents from 21 with a year’s licence and an under-25 surcharge; Sixt from 21; Europcar adds a young-driver surcharge from 22 to 26. None of the four brand pages we read sets a maximum age.

Under 25? Your choice of brand narrows fast, and the surcharge isn’t printed anywhere we looked.

Enterprise’s damage waiver still leaves an excess of £1,750 (about US$2,310) on smaller cars and £2,250 (about US$2,970) on others, cut to £100 or £250 with its Excess Protection — and it says the waiver “is not insurance”.

An excess is a deductible, not a deposit.

The deposit is separate — £200 for a standard car at Enterprise, £500 to £1,000 for premium ones.

A second driver costs £19.11 (about US$25) a day at an Enterprise airport desk — against £15.60 at its Dover branch.

UK VAT is 20%, and UK rental prices normally include it; Sixt’s own terms print their fees “incl. VAT” and Avis says its premium location fee is already in the quote. So our calculator adds no VAT on top. If a quote you get says “excl. VAT,” add 20%. Avis, Hertz, Europcar and Sixt all name a premium-location fee or surcharge at airports and railway stations (Europcar adds major ferry terminals), and none of them prints the amount — Avis says it’s included in the quote. That’s why our fee box starts at zero.

      The M20

Operation Brock and the M20: the Kent motorway between you and the ship

The last stretch into Dover is the M20 and then the A20, and both are run around the ferry queues.

Operation Brock is Kent’s plan for cross-Channel disruption: a moveable barrier keeps the M20 open both ways while lorries for Dover and Eurotunnel queue on the coastbound side.

In 2026 it ran on the coastbound M20 between junctions 8 and 9 from the evening of Monday, July 13 to Monday, August 24, with a lower speed limit and Lydden Hill as a last-resort holding site for passenger traffic. The Kent resilience forum says check the route, allow extra time and pack food, water and medication.

For a cruise that means a slower run down the M20 in peak summer, not a closed road.

Between mid-July and late August we’d add an hour.

Brock can also be switched on at short notice — a backlog at the Channel is enough.

Check Kent’s travel updates the morning you drive.

Our routing sent both Heathrow and Gatwick to Dover round the south side of the M25 and down the M26 and M20, with no Dartford crossing — Stansted’s route does use it. A satnav can still pick Dartford in traffic. The Dartford Crossing costs £3.50 (about US$5) for a car as a one-off payment (£2.80 with a pre-pay account), charged 6 AM to 10 PM every day.

There are no booths: pay online, by phone on 0300 300 0120 or at a Payzone outlet by midnight the day after you cross. Miss that and a rental company can pass the penalty on with its own fee — the London page lists those charges.

      Book

Book the airport car with the drop charge showing

Discover Cars’ Heathrow page said “from £13” a day on Oct 3, 2026 (a Fiat 500 at £12.89), and its Gatwick page “from £12.” Those are round-trip floors. A one-way to Dover will price differently, and that’s the number to compare.

Search with the Dover return set before you compare totals. The desk page lists the Dover counters you’d drop at, and their weekend hours.

US-dollar conversions come from the European Central Bank’s Oct 2, 2026 reference rate, near $1.32 per pound; a card rate won’t match exactly.

      FAQ

Airport to Dover by car: what people ask

How far is Gatwick from the Dover cruise terminal?

About 79.8 miles and 88 minutes from the South Terminal without traffic, by our routing. The Port quotes 76 minutes on one page and 78 on another.

How long is the drive from Heathrow to Dover cruise port?

About 103.7 miles and just under two hours free-flow from Heathrow’s central terminal area, by our routing; the Port says 95 minutes and Holland America about 2.5 hours. Carnival tells transfer passengers to allow 2 to 2.5 hours.

Do you cross the Dartford Crossing driving from Heathrow to Dover?

Not on the route our routing chose, which follows the M25 south and the M26 and M20. From Stansted it does, at £3.50 a car, payable by midnight the next day.

How much is a taxi from Heathrow to Dover cruise port?

City Airport Taxis published £183.82 for a three-seat sedan and £228 for a seven-seat minivan on Oct 3, 2026. Holland America quotes about £225.

      What is Operation Brock?

Kent’s traffic plan for cross-Channel disruption. A contraflow keeps the M20 open both ways while Dover-bound lorries queue; in 2026 it ran on the coastbound M20 between junctions 8 and 9 from July 13 to August 24.

What is the damage excess on a UK rental car?

Enterprise’s damage waiver leaves £1,750 on smaller cars and £2,250 on others, cut to £100 or £250 with its Excess Protection. The waiver itself is not insurance, Enterprise says.
