For the ship alone, the train wins more often than the car
Most cruise passengers through Dover end up choosing between a train ticket and two hours behind an unfamiliar wheel.
Skip the car if Dover is only where the ship leaves from. Rent one, for a day or two, if Kent is part of the holiday — and collect it in Dover, not at Heathrow.
Americans tend to assume the car is the easy option — at home it usually is. In England the sums move.
The car means driving on the left, often in a manual unless you pay up, for roughly two hours from either big airport.
Then you return it to a desk that closes at 1 PM on Saturday and opens for four hours on Sunday.
The train means a seat and a book.
It also means a walk or a short taxi at Dover Priory — the one part of the rail trip that needs a plan.
So the question is less car against train than this: does anything on your list sit off the railway?

St Pancras and the high-speed line against two hours on the M20
From a London hotel the comparison is time and effort more than money, and the train is hard to beat on both.
| Way down | Time | Cost | At the Dover end |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-speed train, St Pancras | About 1 hr 07 (fastest 1 hr 03), ~42 a day | From £48.60 a person, Anytime Day Single | A walk or taxi from Dover Priory |
| Slower train, Charing Cross | About 1 hr 52 | From £28.90 a person | Same Priory last mile |
| Rental car from central London | About 1 hr 49 min free-flow, 78.3 mi | Rate, fuel, a one-way fee and London charges | A Dover desk, then a taxi |
| National Express 007 | About 3.5 hours | Not on the timetable | Stops in town, not at the ship |
Southeastern and National Express timetables read Oct 3, 2026; drive time is our free-flow routing. Checked Oct 3, 2026
Southeastern prints a fastest run of 1 hour 3 minutes and about 42 direct trains a day — so missing one costs you minutes, not the morning.
The Anytime Day Single starts at £48.60, about US$65 a head — the flexible fare, not a bargain one.
Charing Cross is the slow, cheaper line. Use it only if your hotel is next to it.
Two travellers on the fast train pay £97.20 (about US$130); a family of five, £243 (about US$320) at the Anytime fare.
A car from London has to beat that after its rate, fuel, a one-way fee and London’s charges — the London page does that sum with a calculator.
The coach from Victoria is the budget fallback. At about three and a half hours to the town centre, it rarely wins on anything but price.
Dover Priory to the ship: the walk, the rank and the missing Uber
The train stops about a mile short of the Western Docks. This is the bit people forget to plan.
The Port puts the terminals 30 to 40 minutes on foot from Dover Priory — Holland America says 2.5 km and five minutes by car, and there’s a taxi rank at CT1 and CT2. Saga calls it one mile, a five-minute taxi or a 25-minute walk. Our routing makes it 1.2 miles by road.
Three sources give three distances.
Treat it as a walk you could do with a backpack and wouldn’t want to do with two cruise cases.
Holland America says Uber isn’t available in Dover and taxis are limited, especially in the morning.
That’s the real risk on an embarkation morning — the wait, not the fare.
Dover District’s metered taxi table, dated January 2021 and the only one the council links, starts at £3.40 (about US$4) and adds 10p every 103.5 yards, with £1 extra on Sundays and 20p a bag. For the 1.2-mile run that comes to about £5.10 (about US$7), our arithmetic on the council’s 2021 table, by distance only, before bags, waiting time or the Sunday extra.
Call it about a fiver, with a queue attached. Book a local firm the day before if your train gets in at a busy hour.
We found no published luggage shuttle from the station for embarking passengers — the town-and-castle buses serve port-of-call days, not boarding.
Driving on the left, and paying extra to skip the clutch
Two things Americans underestimate in England: which side of the road, and which pedal does what.
UK traffic drives on the left, per the State Department. After a night flight, the first few junctions out of Heathrow take real concentration.
Enterprise says automatics are at every branch but “availability might be limited” and they usually cost more — Sixt guarantees one if you book an automatic. Discover Cars’ lowest Heathrow price was a manual Fiat 500 — a low headline price is often a stick shift.
Filter for automatic before you compare rates, not after.
Otherwise the lowest line on the screen is a car you won’t drive.
A visitor can drive in Great Britain for up to 12 months on a valid licence that isn’t a GB licence, per gov.uk. No government page we read says a US licence holder needs an International Driving Permit in Great Britain — Enterprise asks for one only when the licence isn’t in the local language and characters, and Europcar only when it isn’t “clearly identifiable”.
So a US licence in English is normally enough — carry your passport to the counter too.
If a manual gearbox out of Heathrow sounds like a bad first hour, that’s your answer.
The Dover trips where a rental beats the timetable
There are trips here a rental makes easy. They just aren’t usually the trip to the ship.
Canterbury is about 27 minutes by car, our routing, and Leeds Castle about 45. Neither cathedral nor castle is on the high-speed line to Dover, and that’s where a car earns its rate.
Dover Castle and the cliffs are close enough for a taxi.
The castle even knocks 20% off for visitors who arrive by bus, train or bike — a hint about how it expects you to come.
A day of driving round Kent, collected at Townwall Street and returned before it shuts, is the rental we’d actually price. The day-trip page does that, with admissions and drive times.
Skip the airport rental if Kent is the only reason. Two hours of motorway is a lot of driving to reach a castle.

Car or train for a Dover sailing: what people ask
Do I need a car to get to the Dover cruise terminal?
Usually not. Southeastern’s high-speed trains run from St Pancras to Dover Priory in about 67 minutes, and a taxi covers the roughly 1.2 miles to CT1 and CT2. A car makes more sense if you’re touring Kent before or after.
How far is Dover Priory station from the cruise terminal?
The Port says a 30 to 40 minute walk; Holland America says 2.5 km and five minutes by car; Saga says one mile. Our road routing gives 1.2 miles. There’s a taxi rank at the station and at the terminals.
Is there Uber in Dover?
Holland America says Uber is not available in Dover and that taxis are limited, especially in the morning. Book a local taxi ahead for an early arrival.
How much is a taxi from Dover Priory to the cruise port?
No firm publishes that fare. On Dover District’s 2021 metered table, the distance alone works out to about £5.10 by our arithmetic, plus 20p a bag and £1 on Sundays.
Can Americans drive in England with a US licence?
Yes. Gov.uk says visitors can drive for up to 12 months on a valid non-GB licence. We found no official page saying a US licence holder needs an International Driving Permit; Enterprise asks for one only for licences not in the local language.
Can I get an automatic rental car in Dover or at Heathrow?
Yes, if you book one as an automatic. Enterprise says automatics are at every branch but availability may be limited and they usually cost more; the lowest Heathrow price on Discover Cars was a manual. Filter for automatic when you search.
