Nearest Airport to the Dover Cruise Port

There’s no airport near Dover. Fly into Gatwick or Heathrow, then it’s about 82 or 101 road miles to the cruise terminals by our routing, or a train via St Pancras that does London to Dover in 1h03 to 1h07. Below are the trains, the fixed-fare taxis, Carnival’s transfer and a check on your landing time.

The short answer

Gatwick is the nearer of the two. Our routing, from each airport’s reference point to the CT17 9DQ postcode point, puts Gatwick about 81.6 road miles and 90 minutes from Cruise Terminals 1 and 2, and Heathrow about 100.9 miles and 114 minutes — both with no traffic, both by the M25, M26 and M20.

Our rental-car pages start the clock at Gatwick’s South Terminal and Heathrow’s central terminal area instead, so they read about 80 and 104 miles. Same roads, different front door.

The port’s own figures are shorter: 76 to 78 minutes from Gatwick, 95 from Heathrow. Holland America says about 1.5 hours and 2.5 hours, and Carnival allows 2 to 2.5 hours from Heathrow — budget the longer numbers, not the shorter.

With checked bags, the choice is a train via London, a fixed-fare taxi, or your line’s transfer. There’s no Uber in Dover.

  • You land the morning you sail
  • Three or four of you split one fixed fare

The Map

Two airports west of London, the ship on the Channel

Heathrow and Gatwick are on the west and south sides of London. Dover is at the far south-east corner of Kent, and the cruise terminals sit at the Western Docks — the ferry port is the Eastern Docks, so follow the cruise signs, not the ferry ones. Saga says the cruise terminals are signposted from the Limekiln roundabout.

The Ride

What the ride to the ship costs

The train row is per person and covers only St Pancras to Dover Priory — the Tube or Thameslink to St Pancras and the taxi from Priory are extra. The taxi rows are per car.

One way, in pounds, as each company printed it on October 3, 2026. Southeastern’s Anytime Day Single “starts from” £48.60 (about US$65), and Railcard holders get a third off; National Rail says fares are frozen until March 2027. Carnival’s transfer, US$109.99 a person, is priced in dollars, so it isn’t in the table. Twelve Transfers lists Heathrow from £190.00 (about US$250) and Gatwick from £165.00 (about US$220) for up to 8 people.

Viator lists Dover port transfers with “from” prices of US$149 to US$383, mostly private cars to Heathrow, Gatwick or central London. Holland America’s coach from Victoria leaves at about 10:30 am for its guests, price not printed.

Sail-Day Landing

Landing on sail day? Check your timing

Carnival’s cut-off is the only published one: land before 11:00 AM to use its transfer. The train-or-taxi rows carry our own margin, not a line’s rule. Enter the landing time on your flight booking and the sailing time on your cruise documents.

  • Carnival transfer, Carnival guestsUS$109.99 a person; your flight must land before 11:00 AM, and the transfers run 10 AM to noon.—
  • Train or taxi, any lineNo cut-off of its own. Our margin for Heathrow, which no line sets: land 5 hours or more before sailing — Carnival allows 2 to 2.5 hours for the road alone.—
  • Carnival transfer, Carnival guestsUS$109.99 a person; your flight must land before 11:00 AM for the 11:00 AM departure.—
  • Train or taxi, any lineNo cut-off of its own. Gatwick is closer, so our margin drops to 4 hours before sailing — still ours, not Carnival’s.—

Your boarding documents give the check-in time, and that’s the clock to beat. The port says you can be dropped at the terminal but there are no waiting areas, so don’t arrive hours early.

Coming Home

The morning you’re back

Ships usually arrive around 06:00 on the port's schedule, and a taxi rank waits outside CT1 and CT2. The port publishes no debarkation times; Carnival's rule is no flight earlier than 1:00 PM. Enter your flight and the time you expect to walk off, and this works out the ride and the gap.

Partner links (transfers, rental cars) may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.

After the ship, the Canterbury and Ashford Enterprise branches are closed on Sundays, and none of the Dover-area desks we found takes after-hours returns. Renting a car after the cruise · Canterbury and the White Cliffs
Trains and Bags

The trains, the coach and your suitcase

The fast way into Dover is Southeastern’s high-speed line from St Pancras: around 42 direct trains a day, 1h03 at best and about 1h07 on average, the first at 06:37 Monday to Saturday.

The port calls that run 66 minutes, and Holland America says trains go every hour — undercounting Southeastern’s own figure, not contradicting it. The slower trains from Charing Cross take about 1h52, from £28.90 (about US$40).

Dover Priory is the station for the ship. The port says the terminals are a 30 to 40 minute walk; Saga says one mile and a 25-minute walk; Holland America says 2.5 kilometres and five minutes by car. Our routing gives 1.2 miles.

With luggage, take a taxi from the station rank, not the walk.

Taxis in Dover run on the council’s table of fares, dated January 2021 — £3.40 (about US$4) for the first 400 yards in the day, then 10p (ten pence) for every 103.5 yards, with 20p a bag. That table is the only one the council links, so it may be out of date.

Outside the district the fare is agreed, not metered — settle it before you leave the airport.

There’s no luggage storage at the terminals, per the port, and we found no Bounce location in Dover, England. The terminals have no food outlets or cash machine, per the port’s FAQ; Saga’s page mentions a café-bar, but the port runs the building, so eat before you go.

Our Dover cruise guide covers the terminals and the ferry-sign trap.

Fly In Early

Flying in the day before

Sleeping in Kent the night before gives you sail morning back. From a transatlantic flight, that matters: you land tired, the drive is the better part of two hours, and Dover has no Uber.

No hotel we ranked collects you from either airport.

The town hotels are about a mile of road from the terminals; the Ashford ones are the shortest drive from Heathrow. The Dover Marina Hotel’s own find-us page puts Gatwick about 90 minutes away by car and Heathrow about 2 hours.

FAQ

Dover cruise airport FAQ

What is the closest airport to Dover cruise port?

There isn't a close one. Gatwick and Heathrow are the two the port and the cruise lines name. Our routing, from each airport's reference point, puts Gatwick about 81.6 road miles and 90 minutes from Cruise Terminals 1 and 2, and Heathrow about 100.9 miles and 114 minutes, with no traffic. The port itself says 76 to 78 minutes from Gatwick and 95 from Heathrow; Holland America says about 1.5 hours and about 2.5 hours.

How do I get from Heathrow to Dover cruise port by train?

Take the Piccadilly line to St Pancras, which Heathrow says takes just over an hour. Southeastern's high-speed trains then run to Dover Priory in 1h03 to 1h07, around 42 a day, with an Anytime Day Single from £48.60. From Priory to the terminals, take a taxi from the rank: the port calls it a 30 to 40 minute walk.

How do I get from Gatwick to Dover by train?

Thameslink runs from Gatwick straight to St Pancras International, per Gatwick, and the Dover trains leave from there. National Rail's own Gatwick-to-Dover Priory page gives no times or fares, so use a journey planner on the day.

How much is a taxi from Heathrow or Gatwick to Dover cruise port?

Fixed fares are agreed ahead, per car. City Airport Taxis lists a saloon at £146.60 from Gatwick and £183.82 from Heathrow; Licensed London Taxi charges £275 from any London airport for up to 6. Holland America quotes £225 from Heathrow and £275 from Gatwick. Dover's meter rule stops at the district boundary, so airport runs are agreed, not metered.

Does Carnival offer a transfer from Heathrow or Gatwick to Dover?

Yes, at US$109.99 a person each way. Your flight must land before 11:00 AM; Carnival says to allow 2 to 2.5 hours from Heathrow and about 1.5 hours of driving from Gatwick. Going home, your flight can't be earlier than 1:00 PM.

Is there Uber in Dover?

No — "Uber is not available in Dover," per Holland America, which adds that taxis are limited in the mornings. Book a taxi ahead. When you come back, a taxi rank waits outside CT1 and CT2, per the port.

Can I take a coach from London to Dover for my cruise?

National Express route 007 runs from Victoria Coach Station to Pencester Road bus station in Dover in about 3.5 hours; the 09:30 arrives at 13:00. It stops in town, not at the terminals. Holland America runs its own coach from Victoria at about 10:30 am for its guests; it doesn't print a price.

Will driving from Heathrow or Gatwick to Dover take me over the Dartford Crossing?

Not on our routing. Both run the M25 to the M26 and M20, then the A20 into Dover, without the Dartford Crossing. From north or east London the route can differ — we didn't check those.

Can I store luggage at Dover cruise terminal?

No. The port says it has no facility to store luggage before or after a cruise, and Holland America says the same. We found no Bounce location in Dover, England — Bounce's Dover page is Dover, Delaware.

How late should my flight home be after a Dover cruise?

Carnival won't sell its airport transfer for a flight earlier than 1:00 PM on the day you disembark. Holland America's Windsor tour with a Heathrow drop is for flights after 4.45pm. The port publishes no guidance of its own, and its schedule shows ships arriving around 06:00.
