Shuttle buses at Heathrow, a short walk at Gatwick
The two London airports handle rental cars in opposite ways, and that changes how long the first hour takes.
Heathrow’s own page: desks in arrivals, then “you’ll usually be taken to your vehicle by one of the operator’s transfer buses”.
Enterprise: Northern Perimeter Road, TW6 2RY, daily 6 AM to 11 PM, a shuttle “every 5–8 minutes from outside the arrivals hall in any terminal”, after-hours key box.
Hertz: Northern Perimeter Road (West), TW6 2QD, daily 5 AM to midnight, off-airport by free shuttle from every terminal; after-hours return by prior arrangement.
Avis and Budget: Central Heathrow, Northrop Road, TW6 2QA, open 24/7, by “dedicated Avis Budget shuttle buses” from Terminals 2, 3 and 4; Terminal 5 customers go to the Holiday Inn London on Bath Road. Avis says its fleet meets ULEZ standards.
Sixt: a desk “directly inside the arrivals area” at Terminal 2 landside, daily 6 AM to midnight including bank holidays, with a 24-hour key drop beside the booth; minimum age 21.
That’s the one Heathrow desk on our list you can walk to — and only from Terminal 2.
Gatwick lists seven brands, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and National, on-airport at both North and South Terminals, “just a short walk” with no shuttle, and says all of them offer after-hours returns. Alamo, Enterprise, Europcar and National 7 AM to 11 PM daily; Avis and Budget 7 AM to 9:45 PM (weekends may differ); Hertz 6 AM to 8 PM.
Land late and the difference shows. Avis at Heathrow runs 24/7; Hertz at Gatwick shuts at 8 PM.
Heathrow to the ship: one rental day against the coach and a booked car
Two of you, landing at Heathrow on boarding day. Change the headcount and type your own quotes into the last rows.
The rental, line by line
Pounds throughout, and our arithmetic, not a quote. £40 a day is our assumption; Discover Cars showed Heathrow from £12.89 on Oct 3, 2026, for a manual Fiat 500. Fuel is the Heathrow–Mayflower run, 67 miles at 30 mpg, using the RAC’s 174.71p a litre for petrol (Oct 2), £6.61 a US gallon in our conversion, whichever airport you pick; Gatwick adds about 13 miles. VAT is already inside UK quotes, so nothing is added for it. Heathrow’s premium-location fee has no published amount, so it starts at 0%. Returning in Southampton makes this a one-way, and no brand prints that fee: type yours in the drop box. No UK child-seat price was found, so the seat stepper adds nothing.
On those assumptions the car is about £54.76 (about US$70) before a one-way fee — roughly £14.76 of it fuel. Two coach seats are £34.80 at the “from” fare.
The coach wins for two. It isn’t close.
At four, coach seats reach £69.60 — and the broker’s four-seat MPV is £127.39 for the whole car, door to door.
A rental that ends at a Southampton desk, not at Heathrow, is a one-way, and that fee decides the sum.
No brand prints it — the London page quotes what each one says instead.
British Airport Transfers lists a Heathrow–Southampton saloon at £180, without saying whether VAT is in. No cruise line we read publishes a per-person Heathrow or Gatwick transfer price; the prices sit in the booking flows.
The M25, the M3 and the gate for your terminal
The road from either London airport is motorway nearly all the way. What takes the time is everything around it.
Royal Caribbean’s directions from Heathrow: the A3113 to the M25, the M3 at junction 12, then the M27 and the M271 at junction 3, with ship names and terminals on the perimeter road signs; from Gatwick, the A23 to the M23, the M25 round to the M3, then the same.
Our Heathrow route runs M25, M3, A27 and A33 with no tolled step, and we found no motorway toll between Heathrow and Southampton. Nothing to prepay, then.
By our routing, Terminal 5 to Ocean is about 64.5 miles and 77 minutes; the central Heathrow rental area to Mayflower is about 72.2 and 85. Gatwick’s South Terminal to Ocean is about 78.7 miles and 100 minutes.
Those are empty-road numbers — no traffic, no stops. Plan for both.
Princess wants you on the ground at Heathrow five hours before sailing, or five and a half at Gatwick.
Drive yourself and keep that margin, not a smaller one — a rental adds a desk queue, a Heathrow shuttle and a car return in Southampton before the terminal.
Southampton Airport: five miles out, with desks open on Sunday
No US city appears on the airport’s destination list, but its desks are the closest cluster to the ships with long weekend hours.
Southampton Airport is about 5.6 road miles from Mayflower and 5.0 from Ocean, our routing. Avis puts it “just twenty minutes away from the docks for cruise liners.”
Its desks matter most to people who never fly into it.
Enterprise there opens 8 to 8 daily, Avis and Budget 7:30 to 8 (to 7 on Saturdays), and Sixt 8 to 4 at weekends.
Southampton Airport’s Parkway station is 99 steps from the terminal, 7 minutes by train to Southampton Central, up to every 15 minutes. That makes it the weekend fallback when the town desks are shut — the hub’s checker compares them.
Discover Cars showed Southampton Airport from £13.40 a day on Oct 3, averaging about £51 — pounds, not dollars, on that page.
The damage excess on a British rental, in Enterprise’s numbers
The headline rate is the part you see. The excess decides whether a scrape costs £100 or £2,250.
Enterprise’s Damage Waiver still leaves an excess of £1,750 a claim on mini to standard cars and SUVs, or £2,250 on others; its Excess Protection cuts that to £100 or £250. Enterprise’s own words: “DW is not insurance”.
That £1,750 (about US$2,310) is what you pay toward damage even with the waiver bought — a deductible, not an insurance limit.
Your US credit card may cover it, or may exclude the UK. Check before you decline anything at the desk.
Return it short of fuel and Enterprise charges up to £15 plus the fuel.
Fill up before you reach the desk, not after the warning light.
Discover Cars sells its own Full Coverage against that excess — our review explains how a claim works with it.
Converted at the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 reference rate (about $1.32 to the pound), these dollar figures will differ a little from your card statement.
Collect at the airport only if the trip goes past the ship
A Heathrow car makes sense when it keeps going — a few days touring first, or a big family with bags.
Two people heading straight aboard should book the coach.
If you rent, search Heathrow with the drop-off set to the Southampton desk you’ll actually reach, so the one-way fee shows. The Dover version of this question is on our Dover airport page.
- Pick-up: Heathrow
- Drop-off: Southampton
- One-way fee shown in the total
- Free cancellation until 48 hrs out
Heathrow, Gatwick and the drive to the docks: questions
How long is the drive from Heathrow to Southampton cruise terminal?
About 78 minutes for 67.4 miles from Terminal 5 to Mayflower by our free-flow routing, via the M25 and M3, with no tolls. Traffic around Heathrow adds to that.
Do you need a shuttle to rent a car at Heathrow?
For most brands, yes. Enterprise, Hertz and Avis/Budget are off-terminal and reached by shuttle bus; Sixt has a desk inside Terminal 2 landside arrivals. Heathrow says you’ll usually be taken to your car by the operator’s bus.
Are Gatwick car rental desks in the terminal?
Gatwick says all seven brands are on-airport at both North and South terminals, a short walk from arrivals with no shuttle. Alamo, Enterprise, Europcar and National open 7 AM to 11 PM daily.
How much is the coach from Heathrow to Southampton?
National Express route 032 is from £17.40 one way including a £1.50 booking fee, for travel from July 13 to Nov 9, 2026. It runs up to 14 times a day, 1 hr 25 at fastest from Terminal 5.
What is the excess on a rental car in the UK?
At Enterprise, its Damage Waiver leaves an excess of £1,750 on mini to standard cars and SUVs or £2,250 on others, cut to £100 or £250 with Excess Protection. Enterprise says the waiver is not insurance.
Are there tolls between Heathrow and Southampton?
We found none. Our route runs M25, M3, A27 and A33 with no tolled step. The one toll in Southampton is the Itchen Bridge, which one of our Gatwick routings did cross.
