Start the car at Heathrow, not in central London
Plenty of Southampton cruisers spend a few days in London first. The car question is really a question about where to pick it up.
If you’re in London first and want a car for the cruise, get yourself out to Heathrow and collect it there. A Heathrow pick-up joins the M25 and M3 without entering the Congestion Charge zone, and Avis says its Heathrow fleet meets the ULEZ standard. A central London pick-up gets neither for free.
Cunard puts Southampton “around 80 miles southwest of London”; NCL says 75.
Our routing from Waterloo is longer, about 85.9 miles to Mayflower and 81.8 to Ocean — it starts in the middle of the city, not at its edge.
From Heathrow it’s about 67.4 miles to Mayflower. Shorter, simpler, and the Heathrow page covers its desks and shuttles.
Starting in the centre adds two costs, not one: the charges below, and a one-way fee at the far end.
The Congestion Charge and the ULEZ on a London rental
Two London charges can land on a rental before you reach the motorway. One rose this year, and TfL’s own page hasn’t caught up.
The Congestion Charge has been £18 a day since Jan 2, 2026, or £21 if you pay later, under the Mayor’s decision MD3442; it runs 7 AM to 6 PM weekdays and noon to 6 PM at weekends and on bank holidays, with no charge from Christmas Day to the New Year’s Day bank holiday.
TfL’s main page still showed the old £15 to our reader on Oct 4, 2026 — go by the Mayor’s decision, not that page, and we leave the charge out of every total.
London’s ULEZ charges £12.50 a day, every day but Christmas, “across all London boroughs” but not on the M25 itself; it only bills cars that miss the emission standard, and Avis says its Heathrow fleet meets it. TfL’s ULEZ payment and penalty pages refused our reader.
Both on the same day would be £30.50 (about US$40) on top of the rental, our arithmetic at £18 — more than three advance train seats from Waterloo.
Enterprise: “The renter is responsible for paying the congestion fee” for each day the car is driven in the zone; Sixt adds a £40 administration fee for each fine it handles. The penalty is £180, cut to £90 if paid within 14 days.
Pay it yourself, the same day — not via the hire company and its fee.
The Dartford Crossing east of London charges cars £3.50 between 6 AM and 10 PM, paid online by midnight the next day with no booths; Heathrow and Southampton are both well west of it, and our routes never touch it.
None of these charges is in the calculator below. Add them to its total yourself if your pick-up is inside the zone.
One-way from London or Heathrow to Southampton: what each brand says
Every brand we read charges for a car that ends somewhere else. None prints the amount for this route.
Enterprise: any rental not returned to its pickup branch pays a one-way fee that “varies based on car category, location and pick-up date”.
Hertz: “One-way rentals usually carry an additional one-way fee, which depends on where you drop your rental car off”.
Avis says one-way fees are in the quote and vary by route.
No brand page we read prints a Heathrow-, Gatwick- or London-to-Southampton one-way amount. The fee shows on the booking screen, and only there.
Sixt’s terms add a £19.99 “flexible location” charge, VAT included, if you return a one-way to a different branch than the one you booked.
Pick the return desk once — then stick to it.
Choose one that’s open when you arrive. On a Sunday that rules out Hertz and Thrifty, as the hub explains, and our one-way guide covers how the pricing works.
A one-way London car against two Waterloo train tickets
Two of you, leaving a London hotel on boarding morning. Add a drop charge when your quote shows one.
The rental, line by line
A sketch in pounds, ours rather than a quote. The £40 daily rate is assumed; Discover Cars’ Southampton page averaged £37 on Oct 3, 2026. Fuel is Waterloo to Mayflower, 86 miles at 30 mpg, with petrol at the RAC’s 174.71p a litre on Oct 2 (£6.61 a US gallon, converted by us). UK prices include VAT already, so none is added; city and station desks charge a premium-location fee nobody prints, so it starts at 0%. The one-way fee is unpublished, and the Congestion Charge and ULEZ are left out: type yours in. No UK car-seat price was found, so seats add nothing here.
Before any one-way fee, the car is about £58.95 (about US$80) for the day — fuel about £18.95 of it. Two advance train seats start at £20.20.
The train wins for two by a distance — and the one-way fee only widens it.
At four, the advance singles start at £40.40 — though the car carries the bags door to door, which counts for something, not nothing.
The car wins outright only when the road between London and the ship is the point: Highclere or Stonehenge on the way down.
Waterloo to Southampton Central, then a cab to your terminal
For a London start the train is the default, not the fallback. Its one weak point is the last two miles.
South Western Railway runs direct from London Waterloo in “around 1 hour and 30 minutes” on average, advance singles from £10.10, first train 5:30 AM and last 11:35 PM.
National Rail says fares are frozen until March 2027. £10.10 is an advance “from” fare — we didn’t capture a walk-up price.
SWR says the port is 1 to 2 miles from Southampton Central, typically a 5 to 10 minute taxi ride.
Nowhere at the station or the terminals stores bags, per Visit Southampton, so train-and-cab means hauling the cruise luggage the whole way — not dropping it early.
Buses replace trains between Chichester and Southampton Central from Oct 26 to 30, 2026, on Southern’s coastal line from Gatwick. Check it if that’s your way in.
For Dover sailings the London question has a different answer — our Dover page covers it.
Book the one-way from Heathrow, with the Southampton return set
If the car wins for your group, collect at Heathrow — and set the drop-off to the Southampton desk you’ll use.
The one-way fee then shows up front, where you can hold it against the train.
Prices here were read on Oct 3, 2026. The dollar figures beside them use the ECB reference rate from the day before, roughly $1.32 a pound, so expect your card to differ slightly.
- Pick-up: Heathrow, outside the charge zone
- Drop-off: Southampton
- One-way fee in the total
- Free cancellation up to 48 hrs before pickup
London, the charges and the run to the docks: questions
How far is Southampton cruise port from London?
Cunard puts Southampton around 80 miles southwest of London, and NCL says 75. Our routing from Waterloo is about 85.9 miles to Mayflower and 81.8 to Ocean, about 1 hr 55 min or more on empty roads.
Who pays the London Congestion Charge on a hire car?
You do, if you drive in the zone during charging hours. Enterprise says the renter pays it for each day the car is in the zone. It’s £18 a day since Jan 2, 2026 (£21 if paid later), under the Mayor’s decision MD3442, even though TfL’s main page still showed £15 when we looked.
Is the train from London to Southampton faster than driving?
Often. South Western Railway quotes around 1 hour 30 minutes on average from Waterloo, while our free-flow routing for the drive is close to two hours before traffic. The train leaves you 1 to 2 miles from the terminals, a short cab.
How much is a one-way car rental from London to Southampton?
No brand page we read prints the amount. Enterprise says its one-way fee varies by car category, location and pick-up date; Hertz says it depends on where you drop off. It appears on the booking screen.
Do rental cars pay London’s ULEZ charge?
Only cars that miss the emission standard pay the £12.50 daily charge. Avis says its Heathrow fleet meets ULEZ standards; check the car you’re given if you’ll drive inside the zone.
