Heathrow, then the coach or a booked car — not a cruise-line transfer you can price. National Express 032 runs to Southampton Coach Station from £17.40, and British Airport Transfers publishes £180 (about US$240) for a saloon.
Our routing from Heathrow’s central area makes it about 65 road miles to Ocean and 69 to Mayflower. That’s 82 to 84 minutes on empty roads — the coach’s fastest run is 1 hr 25 mins. Southampton Airport is about 5 road miles out — but you reach it through Amsterdam, Dublin, Paris or a UK city such as Edinburgh. Land the day before if you can.
Take the coach if
- You’re travelling light enough to manage bags at the coach station
- You land at Terminal 5, where the fastest run starts
- You’re staying near Harbour Parade the night before
Book a car if
- Three or four of you can split one fare
- You’re going straight to the terminal
- You’re carrying a week’s worth of cruise luggage

Three airports, two docks
Heathrow and Gatwick sit west and south of London — both well over an hour’s drive from the docks. Southampton Airport is just north of the city at Eastleigh. The terminals split between the Eastern Docks, QEII and Ocean, and the Western Docks, City, Horizon and Mayflower.

What the ride from Heathrow costs
The coach is per person; the cars are per vehicle, not per head — so a full car splits. None of these is a cruise line’s price — no line publishes one on a page we could read.

One way, in pounds. The coach stops at Southampton Coach Station on Harbour Parade. Visit Southampton puts City and Horizon 10 to 15 minutes’ walk away — Ocean and QEII need a taxi, which isn’t in that row. The broker’s quote moves with the date. Viator lists Southampton port transfers too, priced in US dollars on its own pages.
Princess offers transfers from Heathrow and Gatwick — without a published price. Royal Caribbean sells them on sail day only and suggests buying two weeks ahead. Cunard’s flight page says “Transfers between London airports are not included.”
Landing on sail day? Check your timing
Princess is the one line we found with a Southampton landing guideline. The other rows are our margins, not a line’s — the safe answer is still the day before. Put in your landing and the sailing time from your cruise documents.
- Princess guideline, Princess guestsPrincess’s flight guideline for Southampton: land at Heathrow at least 5 hours before the ship departs. It offers transfers too, price not published.—
- Coach, train or car, any lineNo cut-off of its own. Our routing puts the drive at 82 to 84 minutes on empty roads, and the coach’s fastest run is 1 hr 25 mins. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land 5 hours before the ship leaves.—
- Princess guideline, Princess guestsPrincess’s flight guideline: land at Gatwick at least 5½ hours before the ship departs.—
- Coach or car, any lineNo cut-off of its own. Our routing puts the drive at about 99 to 104 minutes on empty roads. Our rule of thumb: land 5½ hours before the ship leaves.—
- Train or taxi, any lineSeven minutes by train to Central, then a short taxi; ABP puts the airport about 20 minutes from the terminals by road. Our rule of thumb: land 3 hours before the ship leaves.—
What counts is the check-in slot on your boarding documents. Visit Southampton says aim to arrive 15 to 30 minutes before it, not earlier.
Fly in a day early. Sleep near your terminal.
We ranked twenty hotels for a Southampton cruise, fifteen of them in the city, a short taxi from the terminals. Tell us the flight and the sail date, and we’ll pick the night to suit when you land.
The morning you’re back
Cunard runs disembarkation at Southampton from about 7:30 to about 10 AM, and taxis queue at the terminal ranks. Princess says book the earliest flight home 7 hours after the ship arrives for Heathrow and 7½ for Gatwick. Enter the flight and the time you expect to walk off, and the ride and the wait to the gate get laid out.
Partner links (transfers, rental cars) may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.
Trains, the U1 and your suitcase
From London Waterloo, South Western Railway runs to Southampton Central in around 1 hour 30 minutes. Advance singles start at £10.10 (about US$13), and trains run from 05:30 to 23:35. National Rail says fares are frozen until March 2027. From Heathrow, the RailAir RA2 coach runs every 30 minutes to Woking for the same line. Allow at least 10 minutes to connect, SWR says.
Southampton Central has no left luggage. A lift there was also out of order when we read SWR’s page. Taxi ranks wait at both entrances, north and south. ABP’s walking figures from Central are 12 minutes to Horizon and 15 to City, but 45 to 50 to QEII.
No public bus stops at a terminal, only at the dock gates. The Uni-Link U1 runs from Southampton Airport to Dock Gate 4, where all passengers must get off for QEII and Ocean. The airport doesn’t print the fare. The Red Funnel shuttle to Town Quay is for ferry-ticket holders, not cruise passengers.
For bags, Southampton Airport charges £6 (about US$8) a bag a day. Bounce lists spots near Central from £3.50 (about US$5). For the terminals, the lines and where the ships go, see our Southampton cruise guide.
Flying in the day before
A night in Southampton turns the Heathrow leg into an afternoon job, not a race. None of our twenty runs an airport shuttle. You still take the coach, the train or a car — just not against a sailing time.
Premier Inn West Quay shares Harbour Parade with the coach station. Out by Southampton Airport, the Holiday Inn at Eastleigh is about 2.5 miles away by IHG’s count. Its Cruise and Park Offer adds a taxi to the terminal.

Southampton cruise airport FAQ
What is the best airport for a Southampton cruise?
For most Americans it's Heathrow: Southampton Airport has no transatlantic flights. By our routing Heathrow is about 65 to 69 road miles from the terminals, roughly 82 to 84 minutes on empty roads. Southampton Airport is the close one, about 5 road miles, if you connect through Amsterdam on KLM or Dublin on Aer Lingus. Wikipedia reports those pairings — the airport doesn't list routes by airline.
How do I get from Heathrow to Southampton cruise port?
Three ways. National Express 032 runs to Southampton Coach Station up to 14 times a day, fastest 1 hr 25 mins from Terminal 5. It's from £17.40, including a £1.50 (about US$2) booking fee, for travel 13 July to 9 November 2026. The train goes from London Waterloo — around 1 hour 30 minutes, from £10.10 in advance. From Heathrow, the RailAir RA2 coach links to Woking for the same line. Or book a car: British Airport Transfers publishes £180 for a saloon.
Does my cruise line run a transfer from Heathrow?
Some sell one, but none publishes a per-person price on a page we could read. Princess offers transfers from Heathrow and Gatwick, and Royal Caribbean sells airport-to-pier transfers on sail day only. Cunard's flight page says "Transfers between London airports are not included."
How long does it take from Gatwick to Southampton?
Our routing gives about 74 to 76 road miles, roughly 99 to 104 minutes on empty roads. National Express coaches reach Southampton Coach Station from about 10:40am, without a fare on the route page. We don't promise a direct train. Wikipedia reports Southern dropped its Victoria–Southampton service via Horsham in 2024, keeping one northbound morning train. The journey planners showed us nothing.
How do I get from Southampton Airport to the cruise terminals?
Train, taxi or the U1 bus. Southampton Airport Parkway is 99 steps from the terminal, with trains to the city centre in 7 minutes, up to every 15 minutes. There's a taxi desk in the terminal, and taxis may use Dock Gates 4, 8 and 10 on cruise days. The Uni-Link U1 stops at Dock Gate 4, where all passengers must get off; QEII and Ocean are inside the gate.
How much is a taxi in Southampton?
We couldn't verify the council's meter rate. One council page says the fares were last changed in April 2022; another links a table from October 2023 that wouldn't open. Uber operates in Southampton, with UberX and UberXL. Private-hire fares aren't set by the council, so agree the price first.
How far is Southampton Central station from the cruise terminals?
South Western Railway says 1 to 2 miles, 5 to 10 minutes by taxi. ABP's own walking figures from Central: Horizon 0.5 miles and 12 minutes, City 0.6 and 15, Ocean and Mayflower 1.5 and about 30, QEII 2.5 and 45 to 50.
Can I leave luggage at Southampton Central or the terminals?
No — neither has a left-luggage service, per South Western Railway and Visit Southampton. Southampton Airport stores bags at £6 a bag a day, and Bounce lists spots near Central from £3.50 a day.
When should my flight home leave after a Southampton cruise?
Princess says the earliest flight should be 7 hours after the ship's arrival from Heathrow and 7½ from Gatwick. Cunard runs disembarkation from about 7:30 to about 10 AM. Celebrity's general advice is afternoon or evening flights. Southampton Airport says pre-book taxis, since they're busy while ships disembark.
Can I rent a car at Southampton Airport?
Yes. Discover Cars lists 273 deals there from US$18 a day, as it displayed to us, with desks in the terminal or nearby. Its city page starts at £13.40 (about US$18) a day. Drive on the left, and drop the car before you sail unless you've booked parking.
Dollar figures use the European Central Bank reference rate of Oct 2, 2026 (about $1.32 to the pound); your card’s rate will differ.
