Whistler, Squamish and Victoria by Rental Car, Before or After a Vancouver Cruise

The reasons to rent in Vancouver are mostly up Highway 99. Squamish is about 69 minutes from downtown on our free-flow routing, Whistler about two hours, and from Oct 1 the province wants winter tires or chains on that road. Each trip below carries its own price, what to book ahead, and whether a free shuttle covers it instead.

Most of these drives work either side of the cruise. Before the ship, you need the car back in town in time to board. After it, there’s usually a flight home to make — a softer deadline, though not by much.

The late-season calendar is the bigger variable. Sail in the first two weeks of October and the tire rule is already in force — with the Grouse bus down to its last days.

Pick the day by what you want to see. Then check the row above that touches it.

    The rental, line by line
Against the other ways to do it

The C$50 base rate is our assumption, not a quote. GST, PST and the C$1.50 daily rental tax are in. Fuel covers the 81-mile round trip to downtown Squamish on our routing at C$7.98 a US gallon, our conversion of GasWizard’s Oct 2, 2026 price. The gondola ticket is the online adult price; seniors pay C$68.95, youth C$43.95 and children 6 to 12 C$29.95.

For two adults that’s about C$237 on our assumptions, of which the car and its parking are roughly C$89. The gondola tickets cost more than the car, not less.

Sea to Sky Gondola day tickets: adults (19 to 64) C$73.95 online or C$81.95 at the window, seniors C$68.95, youth C$43.95, children 6 to 12 C$29.95, 5 and under free; family (2+2) C$165.95 online. Buy online — at the window the same two adult tickets cost about C$16 more.

The Sea to Sky Gondola calls it a 45-minute drive from Vancouver; our routing to downtown Squamish, a little past it, is 69 minutes without traffic. Parking is a flat C$10 for the day, and the base station is at 36800 Highway 99, just south of Squamish.

Shannon Falls Provincial Park is 58 km north of Vancouver, 2 km south of Squamish on Highway 99; BC Parks lists no day-use pass and we couldn’t confirm a parking fee. It’s a stop on the way up, not a day of its own — the falls sit just short of town.

Porteau Cove Provincial Park is 38 km north of Vancouver on Highway 99, with limited parking; the day-use area closes at 11 PM. Stop on the way up — there’s more chance of a space early.

    Whistler

Two hours north, and a lot fee at the end of it

Whistler is the long day on this page, and the one that most often justifies a car.

Whistler is about 76 miles from Canada Place on our routing, roughly 2 hr 01 min with no traffic. A summer weekend or a slow truck stretches that — our figure assumes neither.

Whistler’s Day Lots 1 to 3 charge C$4 an hour or C$21 for the day (8 to 5); Lots 4 and 5 are C$3.50 an hour or C$13; the village parkades are C$33 for 24 hours. Pay by PayByPhone or at the machines; no parking in the day lots 3 to 6 AM from Nov 1 to Mar 31.

Put that together and a one-day car up and back, with a day lot, is about C$119 at a C$50 base, our arithmetic. Fuel alone is around C$40 of it.

Four hours of driving inside a single day is a lot to fit around a ship. Do it after the cruise, not before — a late return on the evening you board is the one trip you can’t afford to run long.

Squamish sits on the same road, so a Whistler day can take in the gondola on the way back down if you start early.

    Joffre Lakes

Joffre Lakes needs a pass, a lot space and an early start

This is the one trip on the list that can’t be decided on the day.

Joffre Lakes needs a free day-use pass per person through Oct 25, 2026, released at 7 AM Pacific two days ahead (children 12 and under need no pass of their own when with a pass-holding parent); the park was closed Sept 8 to 30 and reopened to passes Oct 1. Park only in the lots, never along Highway 99.

Passes come out at 7 AM two days ahead, so a Thursday hike means booking at 7 on Tuesday. Set an alarm, and have the ship’s Wi-Fi sorted if you’re still at sea.

The park sits well beyond Whistler on Highway 99, and we didn’t route it, so we won’t give you a drive time. Treat it as a full day — or a night in Whistler with the lakes the next morning.

Garibaldi Park’s day-use vehicle passes run June 12 to Oct 12, 2026 at most trailheads. If Garibaldi is the hike instead, that pass window has nearly closed.

Each attraction’s own pages, read Oct 2, 2026. Capilano’s tickets are timed, with 25% off after 5 PM. Checked Oct 2, 2026

Capilano is about 5.9 miles from the terminal on our routing, a quarter-hour without traffic. That’s close enough that the free bus beats the car for most people — no lot to hunt for, no three-hour limit.

Transit riders (SeaBus, then bus 236) get C$10 off admission, which is the plan once the shuttle’s last day, Oct 12, has passed.

If you already have a car for Squamish, Capilano’s lot is a short detour. Don’t rent one just for these two — the decision page explains the shuttles.

    Victoria

Taking the car across to Victoria, and what BC Ferries charges for it

The ferry is the second big reason to rent, and the car fare is most of the crossing.

BC Ferries, Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay (Victoria), one way: adults C$21, children 5 to 11 C$10.50, a standard car up to 20 ft C$89 (Saver fares C$34 to C$84), plus a 5% fuel surcharge (fares effective June 16, 2026).

For two adults and a standard car, that’s about C$138 each way with the fuel surcharge, and about C$275 for the round trip, our arithmetic. Saver fares can cut it — prepaid online, on select sailings. Look for them first.

Booking ahead without prepaying costs a C$20 reservation fee; car-and-driver Saver fares run C$49 to C$99 on select sailings. On a cruise schedule, reserve the sailing — a missed one costs you hours, not dollars.

Tsawwassen is about 23.3 miles from Canada Place on our routing, 46 minutes with no traffic. We didn’t time the crossing itself here, so check BC Ferries’ schedule for the day you want.

Two crossings and a drive at each end make a long day around a sailing — so plan Victoria as an overnight after the cruise unless you’ve landed two or three days early.

    Winter tires

October’s tire rule on the Sea-to-Sky, and what to ask the counter

The season’s last two weeks fall inside BC’s winter-tire window, so a Whistler car has to meet it.

BC requires winter tires (M+S or mountain-snowflake, at least 3.5 mm tread) or chains on designated highways from Oct 1, through Apr 30 on most routes, and a BC release names sections of the Sea to Sky Highway. Vancouver’s season runs to Oct 13, so a late sailing’s Whistler drive falls inside it; ask the counter for a car that complies.

None of the brand pages we read for this guide promised winter tires — so ask at the counter, by name, for M+S or mountain-snowflake tires, and check the sidewall yourself before you leave.

If they can’t supply one, you’re choosing between chains and a different plan, not between rules. The release names sections of the Sea-to-Sky, so assume a Squamish or Whistler drive crosses one.

The rule covers designated highways, not city streets, and the province says most coastal Lower Mainland areas aren’t included. Check its route list if your plan leaves town.

    Book

Collect for the trip day, not the cruise

Book the car for the day you’re driving north or catching the ferry, from a desk that’s open when you want to leave. Several close by mid-afternoon — the hours checker shows which.

For a Whistler or Victoria overnight, compare an airport pick-up too. The counters keep longer hours — and you may be flying out from there anyway.
