A cruise terminal sitting on top of a train station
Start with where the terminal sits, because it settles more of this than the rental rate does.
Vancouver parks the ship next to the trains. Waterfront station is beside Canada Place, the Canada Line runs there from YVR, and the port lists cabs to downtown hotels from C$16.
The terminal sits next to Waterfront station: the SkyTrain lines, the SeaBus and the West Coast Express. Stanley Park, Gastown and the SeaBus to the North Shore are all on that same transit map — and a DayPass is C$12.55.
Your car would also need somewhere to sleep. Hotel garages downtown charge by the night, and the terminal parkade charges by the day — the hub lists both.
Getting to the ship is the easy part. What decides it is whether anything on your list sits beyond the transit map — in Vancouver, that usually means north on Highway 99 or across the water to Victoria.

What the airport ride and the city cost on transit and by cab
Six fares cover most of what a cruise passenger rides in Vancouver. Two need our arithmetic.
| Ride | Fare | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Canada Line, YVR to Waterfront | C$10 evenings and weekends; about C$11.60 weekday daytimes | Our arithmetic: a 1-zone tap plus the C$6.50 AddFare, or 2 zones if YVR counts as two. TransLink doesn’t say which. |
| Canada Line, Waterfront to YVR | C$3.50 to C$5.10 | No AddFare heading to the airport, per TransLink |
| Taxi, YVR to Canada Place | C$46 flat | YVR’s zone map, updated Oct 11, 2024, C$4 load charge included |
| Taxi, Canada Place to YVR | C$42 | The port’s listed fare from the terminal |
| Taxi, Canada Place to a downtown hotel | From C$16 | The port’s figure, also to Pacific Central Station |
| A TransLink DayPass | C$12.55 | Unlimited bus, SkyTrain and SeaBus for the day |
TransLink’s fares from July 1, 2026, YVR’s taxi zone map and the Port of Vancouver’s transportation page, read Oct 2, 2026. Mixed; see notes
Trips starting at the YVR stations add a C$6.50 AddFare since July 1, 2026 (it was C$5); there’s none on trips to the airport. You pay it once — on the way in.
By our arithmetic the Canada Line from YVR to Waterfront is C$10 by tap on evenings and weekends (C$3.50 plus the C$6.50 AddFare), and C$11.60 on weekday daytimes if the ride counts as 2 zones; TransLink’s pages don’t state YVR’s zone. TransLink’s fare pages give the zone prices but never say which zone the airport sits in, so we show both.
Children 12 and under ride the Canada Line free with a paying adult, per YVR. For two adults and two young children that’s about C$23 on a weekday afternoon — the kids ride along for nothing.
YVR’s taxi zone map puts Canada Place and downtown at a C$46 flat fare, including a C$4 passenger load charge (map updated Oct 11, 2024). That one fare covers the whole cab, not each person. Four adults on a weekday daytime pay about C$46.40 on the train — so the cab edges ahead there, our arithmetic.
The port lists C$42 by taxi from Canada Place to YVR, and from C$16 to downtown hotels or Pacific Central Station. The port lists Black Top & Checker (1-800-494-1111), MacLure’s (604-831-1111), Vancouver Taxi (604-871-1111) and Yellow Cabs (604-681-1111).
Against those, a one-day YVR car at Discover Cars’ “from $38” comes to about C$61 on our assumptions, reading that $38 as Canadian — before you find somewhere to return it near the ship. The airport page runs that sum with your own quote.
Two mountain attractions that send a bus to the ship
The nearest mountain day out of Canada Place doesn’t need a car if you time it right.
A free shuttle runs year-round from Canada Place Way, between the convention centres; you need park admission for the ride back. It’s the attraction’s bus, not TransLink’s — the ride itself costs nothing.
Its free shuttle with round-trip admission leaves the front of Canada Place, between the Pan Pacific and the Fairmont Waterfront, until Monday Oct 12 (9 AM to 6:10 PM). After that date you’re on transit or in a car, and transit riders (SeaBus, then bus 236) get C$10 off admission.
Those two cover the North Shore days that would otherwise tempt you into a rental. A family of four at Capilano pays about C$214 in admission either way — the shuttle just removes the car from the bill.
Ticket prices and the parking at each live on the day-trip page, beside the drives that do need a car.
Which Vancouver plans pay for a rental, and which only cost you
Most lists split cleanly. The car helps outside the city and gets in the way inside it.
A car earns its day
- Whistler: about two hours each way on our free-flow routing, with day lots at the far end. Whistler by car.
- Squamish and the gondola: under an hour and a quarter up Highway 99, with Shannon Falls on the way. The Squamish day.
- Joffre Lakes: free day passes, released two days ahead, and well past Whistler. Joffre in season.
- Seattle after the ship: a one-way across a border. Driving back south.
A car only costs you
- Sail day from YVR: the train or a flat-fare cab. YVR to Canada Place.
- Stanley Park, Gastown, Granville Island: all inside the C$12.55 DayPass.
- Capilano and Grouse: free shuttles from the front of Canada Place, Grouse’s only to Oct 12.
- A week at sea: a parked car pays rent every day you’re gone. Terminal parking.
Booster until nine: what BC asks of a family in a rental
Families are where the arithmetic most often tips, and BC’s seat law is the first line of it.
BC law: every child under 16 must be properly restrained; rear-facing until at least age 1 and 9 kg (20 lb), a child seat from 9 to 18 kg (20 to 40 lb), and a booster until age 9 or 145 cm (4 ft 9 in). The fine was C$109 in 2008; we couldn’t confirm today’s.
A rented seat is priced at the counter — we found no Canadian figure from any brand.
Bringing your own seat means one you already know how to fit. Check your airline’s rule on carrying it before you pack.
If the trip is only the ship and the city, though, the Canada Line’s free ride for children 12 and under does more for a family budget than any rental class.
If the answer was “rent,” book it for the right days only
Rent for the days outside the city, not for the ride to the ship. A car collected the morning you head for Whistler, and returned that evening or the next, skips both the garage and the parkade — and the nightly bill they bring.
The downtown desks close early. Check the hours checker before you choose one.
- Pick-up: YVR counters, on site and off
- Return where your trip finishes
- Taxes shown before payment
- Free cancellation up to 48 hours ahead
Vancouver without a rental: the common questions
Do I need a car for an Alaska cruise from Vancouver?
Not for the ship. Canada Place sits beside Waterfront station, the Canada Line runs there from YVR, and a taxi from the airport is a C$46 flat fare. A car helps for Whistler, Squamish, Joffre Lakes or the Victoria ferry.
How much is the Canada Line from YVR to Canada Place?
Our arithmetic gives C$10 by tap on evenings and weekends and about C$11.60 on weekday daytimes, including the C$6.50 AddFare charged on trips from the airport since July 1, 2026. TransLink doesn’t state which zone YVR is in. Children 12 and under ride free with a paying adult.
What is the flat taxi fare from Vancouver airport to downtown?
YVR’s zone map, updated Oct 11, 2024, shows C$46 to Canada Place and downtown, including a C$4 passenger load charge. Heading back, the port lists C$42 from Canada Place to the airport.
Is there a free shuttle from Canada Place to Capilano Suspension Bridge?
Yes. Capilano runs a free shuttle year-round from Canada Place Way, between the two convention centres. You need park admission to ride back.
Does the Grouse Mountain shuttle leave from Canada Place?
Its free shuttle, for guests with round-trip admission, leaves the front of Canada Place, between the Pan Pacific and the Fairmont Waterfront, until Monday Oct 12, 2026, 9 AM to 6:10 PM. After that, transit riders get C$10 off admission.
What are BC’s car seat rules for kids?
Every child under 16 must be properly restrained. Rear-facing until at least age 1 and 9 kg, a child seat from 9 to 18 kg, and a booster until age 9 or 145 cm (4 ft 9 in).
