Disembark day at Civitavecchia, hour by hour
Getting you off the ship is the cruise line’s job. Getting from the pier to a plane is yours.
Carnival sells its Fiumicino transfer at $79.99 a person each way. You must land by noon on embarkation day. Going home, your flight can’t leave before noon, and the transfers leave at 7, 8 and 9 AM.
Read that as the cruise line’s own verdict on the morning. Three departures by 9 AM, and nobody on a flight before noon.
Carnival also asks guests to reach Fiumicino three hours before an international flight. Add the 49-minute free-flow drive, and a noon departure means leaving the port around 8 at the latest. That’s our arithmetic, with no traffic.
Holland America warns that waits for a taxi from the ship to the airport “can exceed 3 hours”. The €130 fixed fare is fair — the queue for it costs you time.
A car you’ve collected the day before solves the queue — a car you plan to collect that morning depends on the desk hours below.
Walking off the ship: which desk can you use at that hour?
The four Civitavecchia desks and the two Fiumicino ones, read from each company’s page. Pick your disembark day and the time you’ll reach a counter.
The checker starts on a Saturday at 10:30 — a realistic hour to reach town with bags.
Avis has half an hour left. Hertz has two, the station desks two and a half. Then every Civitavecchia desk is shut for the day.
Move it to 11:30 on a Sunday and only the station desks remain, with an hour and a half to go.
If your ship docks at the weekend and you need a car that day, book it for the earliest slot, or collect it at Fiumicino and ride the €130 cab there first. Weekday hours and the lunch breaks are in the hub’s checker.
Dropping the car at Fiumicino before the flight
The airport keeps the long hours the port town doesn’t.
Avis: “24-hour drop-off available.” Its counter runs 7 AM to midnight; Hertz runs the same hours and takes cars back on the first floor of Parking A.
That makes Fiumicino the forgiving end of a rental here, not Civitavecchia.
Both counters sit in the airport’s rental office tower, a walk from departures, with the cars parked in the multistorey next door.
Leave time to find the right floor, hand over the car and walk through the tower to departures. Get it wrong and it takes longer than the drive.
A Civitavecchia pickup returned at Fiumicino is a one-way, so ask for the drop charge in writing before you book.
Port to Fiumicino: a one-way rental against the €130 cab and the line packages
Set the travelers and the desk, type your quote and the drop charge. The cab and the cruise lines’ prices sit alongside.
The rental, line by line
These are our sums in euros, not a quote. We start the day rate at €70 (about US$80), an assumption close to Discover Cars’ $79 Civitavecchia average on Oct 3, 2026, which didn’t name its dollar. The A12 is counted once at €2.30 (about US$3). We treat 22% VAT as included and the location box as 0%, since the only surcharge figures we found date from 2018. Add the one-way drop charge from your quote, the pump price per litre for fuel (no official October price was readable), and any seat charge under coverage. Conversions to dollars on this page: ECB reference rate, Oct 2, 2026, about $1.12 to the euro; expect your card’s to differ.
With the defaults the rental is €72.30 (about US$80) for the day, before fuel and before the one-way charge we couldn’t find printed anywhere.
Against it: the €130 cab, Carnival’s €142.52 (about US$160) for two, and NCL’s late checkout at about €229.84 (about US$260) for two adults, our ECB conversions of $79.99 and $129.
For a couple going straight to a plane, the cab or a line package is simpler. Fewer handovers — one price. The car earns its place when the flight is tomorrow and the day in between has somewhere to go.

Late checkout and Rome tours that end at the airport
Two cruise lines sell three ways to fill the gap between disembarking and a later flight. None of them involves a rental car.
NCL’s Late Checkout with Transfer to FCO costs from $129 an adult ($119 a child), about 4¾ hours with lunch on board, for flights after 6 PM.
NCL’s Scenic Rome With Transfer runs from $189 an adult, for flights after 5 PM. Holland America’s A Glimpse of Rome with Fiumicino transfer starts at $199, for flights at 3 PM or later.
Each ties your morning to the ship’s schedule, not yours, and each fixes the flight window: after 3, after 5 or after 6.
MSC, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Costa, Viking and Oceania didn’t publish a transfer price on any page we read. Ask on board, not after you’ve booked a car.
If one of them fits your flight, book it before you book a car — the car only has to beat what’s left.
Storing bags if you skip the car
A car is partly a locker. Without one, the question is where the suitcases spend the day.
Bounce lists luggage storage across Rome from €1.95 (about US$2) a day, at Termini and at the airport among others; in Civitavecchia, Holland America mentions storage at the station and near the Varco Fortezza gate without naming it. That’s a headline “from” rate on its Rome page, not a quote for your bags.
So a day in Rome between the ship and a flight means hauling the bags there first. Train, bus or the €130 cab — they come with you.
A rental solves that by being a boot on wheels — a good reason to rent for that one day, and about the only one.
Book the after-cruise car for the desk that’s open
Book the pickup on a weekday if you can, or for the first weekend slot — not the last. Set the drop-off at Fiumicino so the one-way charge appears in the total. Our Discover Cars review explains its cover and deposits.
- One-way charge in the total shown
- Town and station desks together
- Fees shown before you pay
- Cancel free up to 48 hrs before pickup
