Should You Rent a Car for a Civitavecchia Cruise?

For the ride to the ship, rarely. A fixed-fare taxi does Fiumicino to the port for €130 (about US$145) a cab, every supplement in. FL5 trains leave Rome about every 30 minutes for €4.60 (about US$5) a person. A car earns its keep on the days around the cruise, at Tarquinia’s Etruscan tombs or a castle on Lake Bracciano. Whoever drives needs the licence paperwork sorted before leaving the US.

Short answer

Civitavecchia rewards a car for the countryside, not for the pier

You can reach the ship from Fiumicino or Rome without a car, and the fares below show why most people do. The real question is what else is on your list.

Before the quiz

If the plan is Rome, a train and the ship, leave the car out of it. The port runs a free shuttle from the edge of town to every dock. The train from Rome costs a few euros a head. Rome’s centre is no place to drive. Rent for the day you head north or inland — then give it back before you sail.

A car pays if

  • Tarquinia, Cerveteri or Lake Bracciano is on the list
  • You’re touring southern Tuscany before or after
  • Five of you with cruise luggage, and one driver who has an IDP

Skip it if

  • It’s Fiumicino, the ship and home
  • You’re spending the days before in Rome
  • Nobody has an International Driving Permit yet

Most of the case against a car here is Rome, not Civitavecchia.

The old centre has camera-enforced limited-traffic zones. The fines find renters through the rental company, by post. The Rome page has the hours and the amounts.

The case for a car is everything the train doesn’t reach well. Etruscan necropolises, a lake castle and Tuscan hill towns keep their own hours, and the regional timetable wasn’t written around any of them.

Five taps

Five questions that decide a Civitavecchia rental

Your plans, your headcount, the permit, the pickup day and the gearbox. Tap one answer per row and the reading appears.

What fills the days around the ship?
How many of you, with cruise bags?
Will the driver carry an International Driving Permit?
When would you collect the car?
Can the driver handle a manual?

The pickup-day row is in there because every Civitavecchia desk shuts by 1 PM at the weekend — the hub’s weekend section lists each one.

The gearbox row is in there because we couldn’t confirm automatics on any brand page we read, which is covered further down.

Five ways to the ship without a car, priced for two and for four

Price these first. A rental has to beat them on the day you need it, and on the arrival leg it rarely does.

Start with the cab, because it’s the one price that doesn’t grow with the family.

The airport and the city’s mobility agency both fix it. One cab, either direction, every supplement included. For four, that’s €32.50 (about US$35) a head — our arithmetic.

Older figures of about €160 (about US$180) still circulate on an undated NCL sheet and on Cruisemapper; the official fixed fare is €130. Pay the fixed fare and nothing on top.

Carnival’s transfer is the other airport option, at $79.99 a person; four people pay $319.96 — about €285, more than twice the cab.

From Rome the train wins on price by a distance. Five people on the FL5 pay €23 (about US$25) between them, our arithmetic from the €4.60 fare.

The CSP bus runs from the railway station to the ships on ship days only, roughly 7 AM to 7 PM, about 15 minutes, €6 (about US$7) a person each way. Or walk from the station — the free shuttle starts at the gate.

The SIT bus costs more, €12.50 (about US$14) a head. It runs from Termini or San Pietro straight to Largo della Pace — no platform to find.

From Fiumicino the train is awkward. There’s no direct service. You ride the FL1 into Rome and change to the FL5 — bags and all.

For two people with bags and a flight that lands before noon, the cab is the clean answer. Book the car for later in the trip, when it has somewhere to go.

Licence

The International Driving Permit, in the words of the people who enforce it

Of everything on this page, this is the one thing to sort out in the US. Nobody at a Civitavecchia counter can issue it.

The US Embassy in Rome: “Americans visiting Italy as tourists and intending to drive should obtain an International Driving Permit before leaving the U.S.”.

ACI says a non-EU licence needs either an International Driving Permit or a sworn Italian translation (traduzione giurata). We found nothing on where an American gets a sworn translation made — so we wouldn’t build a trip on one.

Maggiore’s terms ask for the permit or a notarised translation whenever a licence was issued outside Europe.

So a counter working to those terms can turn you away without one.

ACI accepts both kinds of permit: the 1949 Geneva one, valid a year, and the 1968 Vienna one, valid three.

The State Department says to get one from AAA or the American Automobile Touring Alliance before the trip, and to carry your US licence with it.

Where the sources differ, they differ on the alternative, not the need. The Embassy names the permit. ACI also accepts a sworn translation, and Maggiore a notarised one.

Carry the permit, not a plan B — it’s the one version every source we read accepts.

Automatics

Booking an automatic out of Civitavecchia

Americans book an automatic by reflex. Here it’s a request you confirm in writing.

None of the brand pages we read for Civitavecchia, Fiumicino or Termini says how many automatics it keeps. Discover Cars’ cheapest Fiumicino headline was a Fiat 500, and its listing didn’t say manual or automatic in what we read.

Book the automatic as a named class on your quote, not as a note in the comments box.

If the quote doesn’t say automatic, assume it isn’t — you don’t want to find out at the counter.

If nobody in your party drives a manual and no quote confirms an automatic, the train-and-taxi table above is the plan, and a good one.

Book

If the car wins, book it for the right days

Rent for the touring days. Give the car back the day before you sail, so it never sits idle while you’re at sea.

Collect on a weekday if you can, from a desk that’s still open when you arrive. Check the class says automatic if you need one. How Discover Cars handles deposits and cover is worth five minutes before you click.

Dollar conversions on this page use the European Central Bank’s Oct 2, 2026 reference rate, about $1.12 to the euro. Your card’s rate will differ.

FAQ

Car or no car at Civitavecchia: the usual questions

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Italy?

The US Embassy in Rome says Americans who plan to drive should get one before leaving the US. ACI accepts an IDP or a sworn Italian translation of your licence, and Maggiore’s terms ask for one or a notarised translation for licences issued outside Europe. AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance issue IDPs.

How much is a taxi from Fiumicino to Civitavecchia port?

A fixed €130 per cab, in either direction, with all supplements included, per Fiumicino airport (ADR) and Roma Mobilità, read Oct 3, 2026. Older figures of about €160 still appear on secondary sites.

How do you get from Rome to Civitavecchia cruise port without a car?

FL5 regional trains run about every 30 minutes from Termini, Ostiense, Trastevere and San Pietro; the port’s FAQ prices a one-way ticket at €4.60. From Civitavecchia station walk about 600 metres to Varco Fortezza for the free shuttle, or take the €6 CSP bus. The SIT bus from Termini or San Pietro to Largo della Pace is €12.50.

Can I rent an automatic car in Civitavecchia?

Possibly, but we couldn’t confirm it: none of the brand pages we read for Civitavecchia, Fiumicino or Termini says how many automatics it keeps. Book an automatic as a named class and check the quote says so.

Is it worth renting a car for a Civitavecchia cruise?

Usually not for getting to the ship, which a €130 fixed taxi from Fiumicino or a €4.60 train from Rome covers. A car makes sense for Tarquinia, Cerveteri, Lake Bracciano or southern Tuscany before or after the cruise.
