The short answer

Fiumicino is the one to fly into. Our routing, from the airport’s reference point to Largo della Pace, where the port’s free shuttle to the ships starts, gives about 41.2 road miles and 49 minutes with no traffic. Ciampino is about 53.8 miles and 67 minutes.

The lines quote more. Holland America says 43 miles and about 90 minutes from Fiumicino, Carnival says 1.5 hours, Princess about an hour, and MSC about 71 km. Budget the longer numbers.

From Fiumicino the taxi fare is fixed at €130 (about US$145) a car, both ways, per ADR. The cheap way is two trains via Rome, and Carnival sells a transfer.

Take the train if

  • You’re one or two people, travelling light
  • You’re spending a night in Rome first
  • You don’t mind a change at Trastevere or Ostiense

Take the €130 taxi or a transfer if

  • You land the morning you sail
  • Three or four of you split one fixed fare
  • You’re on Carnival and land by 12:00

The Map

Two airports by Rome, the ship up the coast

Fiumicino sits on the coast west of Rome; Ciampino is on the city’s south-east side, so it’s the longer run. Civitavecchia is up the coast to the north-west. Inside the port, cars and walkers stop at Largo della Pace; the free shuttle takes you to your terminal, about 10 to 15 minutes, per Port Mobility.

One way, in euros, as each operator printed it on October 3, 2026. The €4.60 (about US$5) kilometric ticket is Port Mobility’s figure; Regione Lazio’s 2026 fare table may price the trip as a zone ticket instead, so check at the machine. Carnival’s transfer, US$79.99 a person, is priced in dollars, so it isn’t in the table.

Viator lists 200-plus Rome port transfers, shared and private, with “from” prices that started at US$23 when we looked on October 3, 2026 — check whether a price is per person or per car. Norwegian sells a late check-out with a Fiumicino transfer from US$129 an adult, for flights after 6 PM.

Sail-Day Landing

Landing on sail day? Check your timing

Carnival’s cut-off is the only published one: land at Fiumicino by 12:00 to use its transfer. The other rows are our own margin, not a line’s rule. Put in your scheduled landing and the sailing time from your cruise documents.

  • Carnival transfer, Carnival guestsUS$79.99 a person; land by 12:00, with transfers from Terminal 3 between 10:00 and 13:00.—
  • Taxi or train, any lineNo cut-off of its own. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land at least 4 hours before the ship leaves.—

What counts is the check-in time in your boarding documents. Port Mobility doesn’t publish a check-in window or drop-off rules, so follow your line.

Coming Home

The morning you’re back

The port's free shuttle brings you from the ship to Largo della Pace. Carnival's rule is no flight earlier than 12:00 with its transfer, and Holland America warns taxi waits can pass 3 hours. Put in your flight and when you expect to be off, and this lays out the ride and the wait.

Trains and Bags

The trains, the buses and your suitcase

The FL5 regional line runs from Rome to Civitavecchia about every 30 minutes, calling at San Pietro, Trastevere, Ostiense and Termini, per Port Mobility. Princess puts the trip at 60 to 80 minutes.

From the airport, the FL1 runs every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 on holidays, per ADR. Change at Trastevere or Ostiense. The Leonardo Express to Termini is faster, but Metrebus tickets aren’t valid on it.

Civitavecchia station is about 600 m from the port’s Varco Fortezza gate, per Port Mobility. With bags, take the CSP bus from the station to the ships: €6 (about US$7) each way, ship days only, roughly 7 AM to 7 PM.

The free Blue Line shuttle also links the Fortezza with Largo della Pace, every 20 to 25 minutes, 5:30 AM to 1 AM from May to October.

From Rome itself, the SIT bus runs from San Pietro and Termini straight to Largo della Pace for €12.50 (about US$14). A Sunday-only COTRAL bus runs to Roma Cornelia for €3.90 (about US$4), per Port Mobility.

There’s no official luggage storage at the port, per Port Mobility. Holland America says there are left-luggage spots at Civitavecchia station and near the Varco Fortezza gate, without naming them. Bounce lists spots in Rome from €1.95 (about US$2) a day, including at Termini and Fiumicino.

For the terminals and the lines, see our Civitavecchia cruise guide.

Fly In Early

Flying in the day before

Land a day early and the 41 miles to the port stop being a race. From a transatlantic flight, that matters: you land tired, and the port is the better part of an hour away on a clear road.

One hotel we ranked runs a free airport shuttle: the Hilton Garden Inn Rome Airport, to and from Fiumicino, per Hilton. The Hilton Rome Airport is joined to the terminals by a covered walkway.

The town hotels sit within about a mile of the port shuttle by our routing. Several Civitavecchia listings offer an airport car, from €55 (about US$60) a person to €300 (about US$335) a vehicle round trip, without naming the airport.
