Seven drives out of Civitavecchia, measured from the shuttle hub
Largo della Pace is where the cruise shuttle starts, so every drive here starts there too.

OpenStreetMap routing, free-flow, no traffic and no stops, measured to or from Largo della Pace, the port’s shuttle hub. Our routing, Oct 3, 2026; add time for traffic, parking and the walk in. Our routing
Every time on this page is free-flow — no traffic, no parking, no wrong turns.
Treat it as the floor, not the plan.
The closer three are half-day trips you can fit around a pickup and a return the same day. Saturnia, Pitigliano and Orvieto are a full day each, there and back.
Double the times for the round trip: Tarquinia is about 38 minutes of driving in total, Orvieto about 3 hr 24 min.
Tarquinia and Cerveteri: the necropolis pair
The first reason to rent a car here is Etruscan — and most of it is underground.
Tarquinia’s Monterozzi necropolis holds about 6,000 graves, some 200 of them painted tomb chambers, per Wikipedia. The park that runs it and Cerveteri, PACT, opens the necropolises Tuesday to Sunday, 9 to 7:30 until October 12, 2026, 9 to 6:30 from October 13 to 24, and 9 to 5 from October 25, last entry an hour before closing. It’s closed Mondays. A ticket for one town’s museum and necropolis is €13 (about US$15), all four PACT sites €21 (about US$25), and under-18s go free.
It’s the shortest drive on our list, about 13.2 miles north on the coast. Do it the morning you collect the car.
We couldn’t read the toll for the A12 north of Civitavecchia toward Tarquinia: the operator’s site didn’t load, so our calculator counts no toll on that run. If your route joins the motorway, a toll may apply. The SS1 Aurelia is the free road.
Lazio’s tourism board calls Cerveteri’s Banditaccia “the only place in ancient Etruria where the necropolis remains exactly as an ancient Etruscan would have seen it”. It keeps the same PACT hours and prices as Tarquinia, Mondays closed included.
Cerveteri lies the other way, about 21.8 miles south toward Rome, 33 minutes by our routing.
Two necropolises in one day works on the clock, Tuesday to Sunday. The €21 PACT ticket covers both towns’ museums and tombs, so it pays for itself if you see both.
We couldn’t verify ZTL hours for Civitavecchia, Tarquinia or Viterbo. Park outside the old town walls and walk in — a camera fine costs more than the walk.
Castello Odescalchi on Lake Bracciano: hours and tickets
The castle prints its own hours and prices, if not the date the winter timetable starts.
Castello Odescalchi on Lake Bracciano keeps summer hours of 10 to 6 on weekdays and 10 to 7 at weekends, and winter hours an hour shorter at each end of the week; last entry is an hour before closing. The castle doesn’t print the changeover date, so check the week you go. Tickets are €10 (about US$11), €9 (about US$10) reduced and €8 (about US$9) for ages 6 to 12, under-6s free, with guided tours included on Sundays and holidays. Hours can change on private-event days, and the site prints no parking.
Two adults pay €20 (about US$20) at the door. Two adults and two children aged 6 to 12 pay €36 (about US$40), our arithmetic from the castle’s own price list.
Sunday’s free guided tours are a reason to go that day, not a reason to skip it.
The drive is about 31.2 miles each way, 48 minutes by our routing.
The castle names an entrance, Via Giulio Volpi 12, but no car park — leave time to find a space in town.
Saturnia, Pitigliano and Orvieto: the long days
Past the hour mark the map opens into southern Tuscany and the Orvieto cliff. We routed them all — and could price only one.
Saturnia’s Cascate del Mulino and the hill town of Pitigliano are the Tuscan end of the map. We routed both but read no prices or rules for either.
Saturnia is about 50.7 miles away by our routing, Pitigliano 55.9 — roughly 80 minutes each, one way.
Orvieto’s cathedral opens 9:30 to 7 Monday to Saturday in October, with Sunday slots of 10 to 11 and 1 to 5:30. A €8 (about US$9) ticket covers the cathedral, the Emilio Greco museum and the underground, €11 (about US$12) adds the Museo Claudio Faina, under-11s free.
That’s €8 a person for the cathedral ticket, or €11 with the Faina museum. Orvieto is 1 hr 42 min each way by our routing. It’s the longest drive on the list — start early.
We didn’t read hours or prices for Viterbo’s Palazzo dei Papi; Viterbo is 57 minutes inland.
Pick one of these for a day, not two — the driving alone fills half of it.
What a day at Lake Bracciano costs in a Civitavecchia rental
Pick the desk, type your quote, and add the pump price when you see it. The tickets are the castle’s own October prices.
The rental, line by line
Our sums, in euros; the booking page has the binding total. The €70 (about US$80) day rate is our assumption, close to Discover Cars’ $79 Civitavecchia average on Oct 3, 2026 (shown in dollars of an unstated kind). The route is the Bracciano round trip, about 62 miles, with no toll counted, since we couldn’t read the tariff for the A12 north of the port. VAT is taken as already inside the quote, our assumption, and the location box starts at 0%. Fuel is zero until you type a pump price; nobody published an official one we could read for October. No Italian car-seat price turned up, so add it under coverage. Dollar amounts on this page come from the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 reference rate, about $1.12 a euro; your card will differ.
With two adults, the defaults land at €90 (about US$100): one day at our €70 assumption plus two €10 castle tickets, before fuel.
Fuel stays at zero until you type a pump price. We couldn’t read an official October figure, so we won’t print one.
Change the castle ticket to €8 for Orvieto’s cathedral, and the miles box follows the route you pick in your head, not ours — round trips are in the table above.
Driving the Lazio coast and the hill towns: the rules ACI prints
Country roads, a motorway stretch and medieval town gates: Italy’s automobile club publishes the rules in English.
ACI’s limits: 130 km/h (about 80 mph) on motorways, 110 on main roads, 90 on secondary roads and 50 in towns. In rain the motorway limit drops to 110 and main roads to 90.
Dipped headlights must be on outside built-up areas, day and night — sunshine or not.
The limit is 0.5 grams a litre, and zero for anyone who has held a licence under three years or is 21 or younger. ACI lists fines from €527 to €6,000 (about US$590 to US$6,735).
Read that again if your driver is young or newly licensed. The limit is zero, not “a glass with lunch”.
Carry the warning triangle, set at least 50 metres back, and wear the hi-vis vest when you step out on a road outside town.
A foreign driver stopped for an offence must pay on the spot or leave a deposit, or the car can be held for up to 60 days. The State Department says to be ready to pay in cash, in euros. Carry cash for a fine — a card may not do.
Children up to 1.5 metres tall must ride in an approved restraint.
Holding a phone while you drive costs €250 to €1,000 (about US$280 to US$1,120) for a first offence, plus licence points and a short suspension, under the road-code reform in force since December 14, 2024, per a legal publisher’s summary; hands-free is allowed.
Speeding fines run from €41 (about US$45) to €3,316 (about US$3,720) on ACI’s sheet for foreign motorists, so drive the limit and read the signs, which change with the road class.
Fit the day trip before the cruise, if you can
The same drive feels different with five suitcases behind you.
Before the ship, you carry a day bag. After it, the whole family’s luggage rides in the boot of a small car.
Collect on a weekday morning, drive out, and return the same afternoon before the desk shuts. Every Civitavecchia desk closes by 1 PM at the weekend. The hub has each one’s hours.
After the cruise, a day trip works only if you keep the car to Fiumicino and fly late. The after-cruise page runs that clock.
Book one day, from a desk open at both ends
One day is the unit here. Book it from a desk whose hours cover your pickup and your return. Then compare prices. Our Discover Cars review covers its cover and deposits.
