The morning you walk off: which counter is open
Seward and Whittier keep office hours, and the checker below reads them in Alaska time.
Set the day and the hour you expect to reach a counter, not the hour the ship docks. Disembarkation takes time, and the checker can’t know how much.
For Whittier sailings, Princess asks fly-in guests to land 5 hours before the ship leaves, and to book flights home no earlier than 10 hours 30 minutes after it docks (1 PM earliest from ANC on its rail transfer). That 10-and-a-half-hour gap is Princess’s own planning figure — a fair warning of how slow the morning can be.
In Seward, Hertz is on Port Avenue, the terminal’s own street.
We didn’t measure the walk, and Hertz’s page mentions no shuttle; a reseller says one runs on request.
In Whittier, Avis is about 0.4 miles away by its own figure, with no shuttle.
After Oct 5, there’s no Whittier desk on our list at all.
If you dock in Seward on a Sunday, the only desk we found stays shut all day — plan the trip north around a ride to Anchorage instead.
Dock to airport: a Seward car against the 9 AM transfer
The simplest after-cruise rental: from Seward to your flight home. Type your quote and the drop charge.
The rental, line by line
Every box is ours to start and yours to change. We found no published Seward day rate, so the $70 base is an assumption. Alaska’s 9% and Seward’s 7% are in; the 7% comes from the Seward Chamber, and we couldn’t confirm it on a rental contract. Fuel covers about 127 miles at 30 mpg and AAA’s $5.03 Alaska average. Leaving the car in Anchorage makes it a one-way, so Hertz’s intercity fee belongs in the drop box once you have it.
Two of you on Alaska Tour & Travel’s dock-to-airport transfer pay $198; four pay $396.
The car has to beat that with Hertz’s intercity fee still unpriced.
The transfer leaves at 9, so it suits a ship that clears early.
A car suits a late flight and a stop at Girdwood or Portage — if the fee doesn’t eat the saving.
Fuel for the run to Anchorage comes to about $21 at the city’s $4.98, our arithmetic — the bigger number is the one Hertz won’t print.
Seward to Denali in one push, or broken at Anchorage
If you’re renting after the ship, the drive north is probably why. Here’s how long it is from each dock.
| Starting from | To Denali (park entrance area) | To Talkeetna |
|---|---|---|
| Seward terminal | 363 mi · 7 hr 38 min | 238 mi · 5 hr 11 min |
| Whittier terminal | 297 mi · 6 hr 17 min | 172 mi · 3 hr 51 min |
| Downtown Anchorage | 239 mi · 4 hr 59 min | 114 mi · 2 hr 33 min |
One-way, by OpenStreetMap routing with no traffic or stops; our estimate. Whittier figures leave out the tunnel wait. Our estimate
From the Seward dock to Denali is about 7 hr 38 min of driving before a single stop.
Done the day you disembark, that’s a long day after a morning in the terminal.
Breaking it in Anchorage turns it into two shorter drives, each a normal day at the wheel. Talkeetna, about 114 miles from downtown, splits the second one again.
What you do once you arrive is a different page — the side-trip guide covers the Park Road and the buses.
The rental, line by line
A rough loop of about 602 miles: the Seward dock to Denali, then down to Anchorage, our OpenStreetMap estimate. The $70 base is our assumption. Tax is Alaska’s 9% plus the Seward 7% we couldn’t confirm; switch to ANC for the airport’s charges and Anchorage’s 8%. Fuel uses AAA’s $5.03 Alaska average. Lodging, Denali’s entrance fee and any bus tour aren’t in.
Three days and about 602 miles, two of you: the car comes to the figure above on our assumptions, before Hertz’s fee for leaving it in Anchorage.
Swap the pick-up to ANC to price the other plan — ride to Anchorage first, then rent where the hours are longest and Sunday is a normal day.
The roads and the border Alaska rental contracts rule out
Alaska rental pages come with a list of places you can’t take the car — read it before you plan the route.
Budget at ANC bans the Dempster, Denali, Dalton, Elliott, Steese, Taylor and McCarthy roads, and gravel or dirt roads the state doesn’t maintain.
That’s seven named roads plus a blanket rule on unmaintained gravel. The “Denali” on Budget’s list is, as we read it, the Denali Highway — a different road from the one into the national park. Ask the counter to confirm your route before you sign.
Enterprise: rentals from Alaska can’t be driven outside Alaska.
That rules out Canada for an Enterprise car, the Yukon included, not just the gravel.
The reseller selling Thrifty one-ways says no gravel or unimproved roads, naming the Dalton, Denali and McCarthy.
Most Alaska rental companies forbid unpaved roads, per a travel guide; the Seward Highway and the Whittier road are paved. So a trip from the dock to Anchorage and up to the park entrance shouldn’t trip any of these lines — read your own contract anyway.
Breaking the rule puts you outside the contract you signed. Ask the counter what that does to your coverage — before the gravel, not after.
Filling up at $4.98, and what the loop costs
At Alaska distances, the price per gallon adds up quickly.
AAA’s Alaska average for regular, $5.03 on Oct 1, 2026 (Anchorage $4.98). Anchorage is the cheaper of the two figures, by about 5 cents a gallon — small, though it adds up over a long loop.
The Denali loop above burns about 20 gallons at 30 mpg — about $100 at the Anchorage price, our arithmetic.
Fill up in Anchorage on the way north, where the price we can see is lowest. AAA publishes averages, not station prices, so we can’t tell you what a pump near the park charges.
Hand the car back full unless your contract says otherwise.
A counter’s refueling charge is set by the company, and we didn’t find one in writing.
Leaving Whittier by road on disembarkation morning
The tunnel sets the departure time, not the ship.
Whittier asks one more thing of a driver — the tunnel. Traffic out of town leaves on the hour, and since winter hours began Oct 1 the first slot out is at 7 AM.
Miss a slot and you wait for the next opening your way. Set off from the Avis lot with time in hand, not on the minute.
On ship days Park Connection leaves the Whittier terminal at 9:45 AM for Anchorage at noon, and leaves Anchorage’s Dena’ina Center at 3 PM for Whittier at 5. That’s the car-free answer from Whittier, and Holland America says there are no taxis to catch instead.
If you’re skipping the car altogether, our transfer comparison has the fares.
Book the car for the road trip, not the dock
If Denali or Talkeetna is the plan, the Anchorage airport is usually the better place to start — it has the longest hours on our list and no Sunday closure.
Ride from the ship to Anchorage on the bus or train, then pick the car up there. You trade a one-way fee you can’t see for a bus fare you can.
- Pick-up: Anchorage or ANC
- Return to the airport for your flight
- Taxes and charges shown upfront
- Cancel free until 48 hrs before
A car after the ship: what people ask

How far is Denali from Seward?
About 363 road miles and 7 hours 38 minutes from the Seward cruise terminal to the park entrance area, by our OpenStreetMap routing with no stops.
Can you drive a rental car on the Denali Highway?
Not a Budget car from Anchorage: Budget bans the Denali, Dalton, McCarthy and other named roads, plus gravel roads the state doesn’t maintain. Check your own company’s contract.
Can you take an Alaska rental car into Canada?
Not an Enterprise car: rentals from Alaska can’t be driven outside the state. Budget also bans the Dempster and Taylor roads by name.
How much is gas in Anchorage right now?
AAA put regular at $4.98 a gallon in Anchorage on Oct 1, 2026, against a $5.03 Alaska average.
