Anchorage to Seward or Whittier: The One-Way Rental Car

Drive down, hand the keys in at the port, walk to the ship. For Seward, Hertz’s pages describe an intercity fee for one-ways without printing it, and for Whittier we found no company offering a one-way at all. A travel reseller fills part of the gap with 2027 Thrifty one-ways from $284 a day. This page covers who takes the car, on which days, and how the night before in Seward works once the keys are back.

Where it ends

Two possible drop-offs, and only one we could confirm

Where you rent matters less here than who will take the car back at the other end.

What we found

A one-way into Seward looks possible, and it isn’t cheap. Hertz charges an intercity fee for returns to another desk and doesn’t print it, and a reseller sells Thrifty one-ways to Seward at $284 a day and up for 2027. For Whittier we found no company offering one.

In a big port city, a closed desk means a cab to the next one.

Seward and Whittier have one desk each that we could find, so the drop-off decides the whole plan.

The ride you’re replacing isn’t cheap either. Four adults pay $312 on Alaska Cruise Transportation’s bus or $532 on the Coastal Classic, as our comparison shows — the bar a one-way has to clear.

Get the drop confirmed in writing before anything else — by the Seward branch, not the national reservation line.

Hertz’s fee

Hertz’s “intercity fee,” with the amount left blank

Hertz’s Seward page names the charge. It just doesn’t say how much it is.

Hertz says an intercity fee applies when you return the car somewhere else, and prints no amount for Anchorage to Seward; a return-change fee may apply if you change plans after pickup.

So the fee exists, and the number doesn’t, on any page we could read.

Ask for it as a dollar figure on the quote — a percentage of a rate you haven’t seen yet tells you nothing.

A Seward lodge lists Hertz pick-up downtown and at the cruise terminal, with one-ways to Anchorage for an extra drop fee it doesn’t state.

That’s a lodge describing Hertz — useful as a lead, and no more than that.

A booking site may fold the same fee into a higher daily rate. Compare the total, not the rate, against the one-way quote from the branch.

Thrifty one-ways

Thrifty’s 2027 Seward one-ways, as a reseller sells them

The only priced Anchorage-to-Seward one-way we could find came from a travel reseller, not a rental brand.

A travel reseller sells Thrifty one-ways between Anchorage (3730 Spenard Road or the ANC counter) and Seward (600 Port Avenue), daily May 1 to Sept 30, 2027; its rates leave out taxes and fees it puts at 17% plus $1.72 a night.

The reseller lists the one-way, the Seward drop-off and unlimited miles as included, with a free shuttle to the cruise terminal after you drop the car; an airport pickup adds further taxes and fees it doesn’t itemize (read Oct 2, 2026).

Read the addresses closely — they’re Hertz’s.

600 Port Avenue is the address Hertz lists for its Seward desk, and 3730 Spenard Road the one it lists for Spenard, so the reseller’s Thrifty one-ways start and end at the same two addresses.

ClassReseller’s sample day, 2027With its 17% and one night’s $1.72
Midsize SUV$284–$339≈$334–$398
Standard SUV$315–$389≈$370–$457
Minivan$365–$429≈$429–$504

Sample prices as the reseller printed them, read Oct 2, 2026; the all-in column is our arithmetic. Reseller, not the brand

At the low end a midsize SUV comes to about $334 with the reseller’s charges; the dearest minivan, about $504.

The low end of each range covers May 1 to June 15 and September; the high end is June 16 to Aug 31.

Since the reseller lists the one-way as included, the drop charge should sit inside those prices — get that in writing when you book.

Against a $312 bus fare for four, the midsize SUV is in range.

Against two bus seats it isn’t close — the bus wins by about $178 before you’ve bought any gas.

Against the other ways to do it

A sketch built on a reseller’s number. The $284 base is its lowest 2027 sample, a midsize SUV, read Oct 2, 2026. Our 17% tax line happens to match the 17% the reseller quotes for its own taxes and fees; its $1.72 a night isn’t in, so type it in the drop box. Fuel covers about 126 miles downtown to the Seward terminal at 30 mpg and AAA’s $5.03 Alaska average. Switch to ANC and the airport’s $10.15 a day joins the bill.

Four of you, the lowest-priced sample class: about $353 on our numbers.

The same four on the bus pay $312, and on the train $532.

So the one-way beats the train for four adults and comes in about $41 over the bus. Drop to two people and the bus wins outright.

What the car buys you is the road itself, with Girdwood or Portage on the way down. If that’s worth the difference to you, rent; if not, take the bus.

    Sundays & seasons

Closed Sundays in Seward, closed for winter in Whittier

The calendar knocks out more one-way plans than the price does.

Seward’s Hertz lists Monday to Saturday, 8 to 5.

Nothing on its page mentions a key drop or an after-hours return — so plan on handing the keys to a person.

If your ship sails on a Sunday, the car has to be back by 5 on Saturday — which buys you a night in town you might not have planned.

A Monday sailing has the opposite problem — the counter opens at 8, the same morning you board. Confirm the return time with the branch before you count on it.

Whittier runs on a season rather than a week.

Avis lists its harbor desk open daily 8 to 5 from May 4 to Oct 5, 2026 — we found nothing for 2027 yet.

Even inside the season, a one-way from Anchorage to that desk is something we couldn’t find offered. The reseller calls Whittier rentals “limited” and “quite expensive” and suggests a car in Anchorage plus the bus.

    The night before

Car handed back by five, then a night in Seward

A night in town turns the Sunday problem and the morning rush into one easy evening.

Seward’s one desk shapes the evening as well. Return the car before 5, check in, and let the hotel’s shuttle handle the morning.

No Seward hotel page we read says you can leave a car there for the length of a cruise. Parking there is for your stay, not your cruise.

The Seward Gateway’s single 12:05 PM terminal run is the detail to plan around.

Miss it, and it’s a cab or the free town shuttle.

Seward runs a free shuttle on a 5-mile loop of about 30 minutes, with untimed stops, on a bus marked FREE SHUTTLE, per the Chamber. Untimed stops make it a fallback, not a plan.

    FAQ

One-way to the port: what people ask

Can you rent a car in Anchorage and drop it off in Seward?

It looks that way. Hertz’s Seward and ANC pages describe an intercity fee for one-ways, without an amount, and say availability depends on the location and the car. A travel reseller also sells Thrifty one-ways between Anchorage and Seward, daily May 1 to Sept 30, 2027.

How much is a one-way car rental from Anchorage to Seward?

The one reseller price list we found starts at $284 a day for a midsize SUV in 2027, plus taxes and fees it puts at 17% and $1.72 a night. Hertz doesn’t print its intercity fee.

Can you do a one-way car rental from Anchorage to Whittier?

We found no rental company offering one. Avis’s Whittier desk is seasonal, and a reseller suggests renting in Anchorage and taking the bus to Whittier instead.

Is Hertz in Seward open on Sunday?

No. Hertz lists its Seward office open Monday to Saturday, 8 to 5, and its page mentions no after-hours return.

Do Seward hotels let you park during a cruise?

None of the Seward hotel pages we read says so. Several offer free parking for guests and shuttles to the terminal, which suits a car returned the evening before.
