The ride to the ship is a highway trip, not a cab fare
Start with the map, because the distance makes this a different question from a city port.
Count heads, then price the return. A bus seat to Seward is $78 and a one-day airport car about $105 before any drop charge, on our numbers. At four the bus costs $312, so the car wins only while leaving it in Seward costs under about $207.
Fly in, and you’ll almost certainly land in Anchorage. The airport is about 130 road miles from the Seward terminal, by our OpenStreetMap routing.
That’s roughly 2 hr 52 min at free-flow speed with no stops — a real drive, on a highway the state lists as a safety corridor.
Whittier is closer, about 64 miles and 1 hr 32 min, before you queue for the tunnel.
At those distances nearly every option is priced by the seat, from the train to the shared transfers. A car is priced by the vehicle — which is why headcount flips the answer.
The trouble is at the far end. We found one rental desk in Seward, closed Sundays, and one in Whittier, seasonal, so a car driven down has to go back there or stay parked for the whole cruise.

Coastal Classic and Glacier Discovery: what a seat costs in 2027
The railroad runs to both docks in summer, and the fares are per person, children half or so.
| Train and class | Route | One way | Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coastal Classic, Adventure Class | Anchorage → Seward | $133 adult · $67 child | Daily May 14 – Sept 12, 2027 |
| Coastal Classic, GoldStar | Anchorage → Seward | $289 adult · $169 child | Same season |
| Glacier Discovery, Adventure Class | Anchorage → Whittier | $122 adult · $61 child | Full route May 29 – Sept 12, 2027 |
| Glacier Discovery, round trip | Anchorage ↔ Whittier | $140 adult · $70 child | Adventure Class only |
Alaska Railroad’s published 2027 fares and dates, read Oct 2, 2026. Checked Oct 2, 2026
Leaves Anchorage 6:45 AM, Girdwood 8:05, reaches Seward 11:20 AM; leaves Seward 6 PM, reaches Anchorage 10:15 PM.
That’s a full morning, not a transfer — the train is the scenic option, priced like one.
The Coastal Classic leaves from the Anchorage depot, not the airport, at 6:45 AM, so in practice it means a night in Anchorage first. The railroad says cruise lines have transfers waiting at the Seward train.
Leaves Anchorage 9:45 AM, Girdwood 11, reaches Whittier 12:05 PM (2027). In 2026 it left Whittier at 6:45 PM for Anchorage at 9; the railroad’s 2027 return time didn’t come through for us.
The 2026 season ran May 15 to Sept 13, at the same $133 Adventure fare and $277 GoldStar.
So the 2027 GoldStar fare is up $12 a seat while Adventure Class held still. Book Adventure unless GoldStar’s extras are worth $156 more a seat to you.
Bus seats, shared transfers and a private car from Anchorage
The buses undercut the train, and some of them collect at the airport, which the train can’t.

Friday hotel pick-ups 6 to 6:45 AM and the airport at 7 AM, plus airport-only runs at noon, 12:30, 1 and 1:30; Thursdays and Viking days, hotels 10 to 10:45 and the airport at 11.
The airport pick-ups are the reason to look at it — a flight landing that morning can still make the ship.
Park Connection’s Seward page lists the Dena’ina Center at 7 AM, reaching Seward 9:45, and 3 PM, reaching Seward 5:45 and the cruise dock on ship days; the page still shows 2024 dates. Treat those times as a guide, not a timetable, until it posts 2027’s.
Alaska Tour & Travel’s Anchorage-to-Whittier direct transfer: $90 an adult, $45 a child 17 and under; Hotel Captain Cook at noon, the airport at 12:45; daily May 15 to Sept 12, 2027.
Celebrity sells a sail-day bus from the Anchorage airport to the Seward terminal, and a rail option; sales close about 5 days ahead; no price on its public page.
We found no cruise line’s transfer price on a public page; Princess, Holland America, Viking and Silversea show theirs inside your booking, so open your booking before you compare.
The private transfers are listings on a reseller, not the operators’ own pages — we’d confirm the vehicle size before trusting a “from” price.
Two adults and two kids against four adults, both ports
Headcount sets where a car beats the seats, and the drop charge decides whether it really does.
| To Seward | Two adults, two kids | Four adults | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coastal Classic, Adventure | $400 | $532 | Depot to the Seward dock area |
| Park Connection bus | $240 | $320 | Secondary fares |
| Alaska Cruise Transportation | $312 | $312 | $78 a person; no child fare listed |
| One-day ANC rental, $61 base | ≈$105 | ≈$105 | Only if the Seward return costs nothing; our arithmetic |
| Reseller’s Thrifty one-way, midsize SUV | ≈$355 | ≈$355 | Lowest 2027 sample, its 17% and $1.72 in, plus fuel Reseller |
| To Whittier | Two adults, two kids | Four adults | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glacier Discovery | $366 | $488 | Depot to Whittier |
| Park Connection bus | $260 | $340 | Secondary fares |
| Alaska Tour & Travel | $270 | $360 | Hotel Captain Cook or the airport |
| One-day ANC rental, $61 base | ≈$107 | ≈$107 | Tunnel toll in; we found no one-way offered |
Our arithmetic on the fares above. The car is Discover Cars’ $61 Anchorage “from” rate plus the airport’s $10.15 a day, Anchorage and state tax, and fuel at AAA’s $5.03 Alaska average. Our arithmetic
Four adults on the Coastal Classic pay $532, or $1,156 in GoldStar. Alaska Cruise Transportation carries the same four for $312.
A one-day airport car comes to roughly $105 on our numbers, and that figure assumes Hertz in Seward takes it back for nothing. Hertz says only that an “intercity fee” applies, with no amount.
Run it backwards. For four, the car beats the bus only while the drop charge stays under about $207, our arithmetic.
The one priced one-way we found, a reseller’s Thrifty SUV, comes to about $355 with its charges and fuel — $43 over the bus, though $177 under the train.
At two travelers the margin is thin. Two bus seats cost $156 — so the car needs a drop charge under about $51 to come out ahead.
Whittier tilts the same way. The $260 bus fare for that family of four is more than twice the $107 car, tunnel toll included — but we couldn’t find any company offering the one-way that car needs.
Get the drop charge from the branch as a number before you let the car win.
When to leave the car off the plan entirely
Skip the rental if you’re flying in on sail day. A car adds a return to the busiest morning of the trip.
Skip it if the car would go back to Seward on a Sunday. The only counter there is closed — and we found no after-hours return on its page.
Skip it in Whittier once the season ends. Avis lists its desk as open May 4 to Oct 5, 2026 — and Holland America says the town has no taxis, Uber or Lyft to fall back on.
Keep it on the list if the trip has days on land — Exit Glacier, Portage and Girdwood are where a car pays its way, not the transfer.

Car, train or bus to the ship: what people ask
Do you need a car for a cruise from Seward, Alaska?
Not for the ship itself. Seward’s terminal is in town and the Alaska Railroad, two bus companies and private transfers all run there from Anchorage. A car earns its place if you want Exit Glacier or Portage on your own schedule, or there are four of you and the drop charge comes in under about $207, our arithmetic.
How do cruise passengers get from Anchorage to Seward?
The usual choices are the Coastal Classic train ($133 an adult one way in 2027), a bus such as Alaska Cruise Transportation ($78 a person) or Park Connection, or their cruise line’s transfer. Some rent a car and return it at Hertz in Seward.
How much is the train from Anchorage to Whittier?
The Glacier Discovery is $122 an adult and $61 a child one way in 2027, Adventure Class only. It leaves Anchorage at 9:45 AM and reaches Whittier at 12:05 PM.
Is there Uber or a taxi in Whittier, Alaska?
Holland America says Whittier has no taxis, Uber, Lyft or public transportation. Arrange your ride out before you dock: the train, a bus, your line’s transfer or a car from the Avis desk in season.
Is the Coastal Classic or the bus cheaper to Seward?
The bus. Alaska Cruise Transportation lists $78 a person for 2027 and Park Connection $80 an adult, against $133 for the train’s Adventure Class. The train leaves from the downtown depot; some buses collect at the airport.
