Off the plane and straight to the ship, by car or by seat
A car from ANC is cheap to drive to the port and awkward to give back. Rent at the airport when four or more of you are going and Hertz in Seward has quoted the drop for a weekday. Ride when it’s two of you, when the drop would fall on a Sunday, or when the ship sails from Whittier, where we found no one-way offered.
Rent at ANC if
- Four or more of you, with checked bags
- A Girdwood or Portage stop on the way
- Hertz in Seward has given you the drop charge
Take a seat if
- Two of you, flying in on sail day
- The drop day is a Sunday in Seward
- Whittier, unless Avis confirms an Anchorage car
One ANC day to the Seward dock, against the bus, the train and a private car
Two travelers, one day, a small car. Change the headcount and the base rate to match your own quote.
The rental, line by line
Discover Cars’ $61 Anchorage “from” rate, read Oct 2, 2026, is the starting base — a search result for a small car, so type your own. ANC’s $7 facility charge and $3.15 maintenance charge are in for each day; the concession fee isn’t published, so add your quote’s percentage. Tax is Alaska’s 9% plus Anchorage’s 8%. Fuel is about 130 miles at 30 mpg and AAA’s $5.03 Alaska average. Hertz charges an intercity fee to leave the car in Seward and prints no amount; put it in the drop box once you have it.
Two of you, Discover Cars’ $61 rate: about $105 for the car on our numbers, fuel in. Two seats on Alaska Cruise Transportation’s bus are $156, two on the Coastal Classic $266.
Split two ways, the car is about $53 a head.
So the car looks like the winner on price — until you type in Hertz’s intercity fee, which we couldn’t find in writing. The only priced one-way we found, a reseller’s, starts at $284 a day before its charges; the one-way page breaks it down.
At five travelers the bus is $390.
Type a minivan quote into the base box and see whether it clears that — a group of five is where we’d price the car first.
Switch the pick-up to “An Anchorage town desk” and the airport’s daily charges fall away. From downtown the same car comes to about $92, our arithmetic — though you still have to get from the airport to town, which we didn’t price.
The shorter drive, a tunnel at the end, and a seasonal desk
Whittier’s numbers look better for the car until you ask who takes it back.
The rental, line by line
The same $61 search rate as above, with the airport’s two daily charges. The tunnel’s $13 round-trip toll is in as a single line. Fuel covers about 64 miles. We found no company offering an Anchorage-to-Whittier one-way, so any drop charge is yours to find and type.
The Whittier car comes to about $107 for two, our arithmetic, tunnel toll included. At four it drops to about $27 a head.
Two Park Connection seats are $170, two on the Glacier Discovery $244.
The private sedan listing caps at three people — set the headcount to four and it drops out of the comparison.
Here the drive is short and the return is the whole problem.
Avis is the only desk we found in Whittier — the one-way page covers what we could and couldn’t confirm about leaving a car there.
Across from the South Terminal: one building, eight brands
Every on-airport company works out of the same building, so the walk is the same whichever you book.
Every on-airport company is in the Rental Car Center across from the South Terminal, with free shuttles every 15 minutes to both terminals.
Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty, plus Alaska 4x4 at the South Terminal, per the airport.
Budget and Enterprise put their counters on the South Terminal’s ground level, one level below baggage claim; Avis says its counter is in the baggage claim area, so at least three brands describe a counter in the terminal itself.
Check your confirmation — it says where to go first.
Enterprise at ANC: daily 5:30 AM to 11:59 PM, an after-hours key drop at its kiosk in the return row, and no pick-up off the airport.
Budget at ANC: daily 6 AM to 1:45 AM (8 to 6 on holidays), keys and contract in the drop box on the counter after hours, one-ways available — a late flight still finds that one open.
Hertz at ANC lists 6 AM to 11:59 PM and midnight to 1:30 AM, and an intercity fee on one-ways that depends on the location and car.
Get that fee in dollars before you book.
The airport’s own page gives slightly different counter hours and phones from the brand pages (Enterprise 7 AM to 10 PM in winter and 6 AM to midnight in summer, for one); we print the brands’ own.
Alaskan Car Rental, off airport, lists 907-339-2000, open Monday to Saturday 9 to 6 from October to April and 24 hours from May to September, per the airport.
$7, $3.15 and a percentage we couldn’t find in print
These lines appear only when you collect at the airport. A town desk skips them.
The airport charges a $7 customer facility charge and a $3.15 facility maintenance charge on each rental day, $10.15 together, from March 2, 2026, per the state’s public notice.
On Discover Cars’ $61 day that’s about 17% on top before tax, our arithmetic. Three days of it is $30 — a fee, not a rate, and the same on a compact or a minivan.
The maintenance charge was $2.25 before March, so it rose $0.90 a day.
A full week of airport charges now comes to $71.
On a week’s rental the increase adds about $6, our arithmetic.
No airport or company page we read states ANC’s concession recovery fee; check your quote. Ask for it as a number, not a promise, before you sign.
New on-airport rental agreements take effect Nov 1, 2026, and the state says it won’t commit to holding the facility charge at any level, so the line-up and the charge could change.
If you’re booking for 2027, read the fee lines again before you pay.
Hertz at ANC charges $12 a day after 12 hours late, up to five days ($60).
That fee is for bringing the car back late. Collecting late is the likelier snag after a delayed flight, so call the counter if yours slips.
What Discover Cars’ $61 Anchorage day actually was
A headline rate is a floor for the smallest car on one date. We looked at what sat behind this one.
Discover Cars showed Anchorage “from $61” a day (a Mitsubishi Mirage through Alamo at $60.87), read Oct 2, 2026 — the smallest car on the search, not the minivan a family needs.
It listed Alamo, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Avis. Budget, Dollar and Thrifty weren’t among the names we saw — your dates may show a different list.
Discover Cars showed no Seward or Whittier one-way in its Anchorage results. Use the search for an Anchorage round trip.
It won’t price a port drop.
Our Discover Cars review covers how its own coverage differs from the counter’s.
Down the Seward Highway: free-flow times and a tunnel slot
About an hour and a half to Whittier and three to Seward, if nothing goes wrong. Plan the flight around the slow version.
By our OpenStreetMap routing, ANC to the Seward terminal is 2 hr 52 min and to Whittier 1 hr 32 min. OpenStreetMap routing, no traffic, no stops; Whittier drives leave out the wait for the tunnel’s next 15-minute opening.
The Seward Highway has been a designated Safety Corridor since May 2006. Drive it at the posted limit — our times assume no traffic at all.
The state lists a rehabilitation project on the Seward Highway from Girdwood to Ingram Creek (mileposts 75 to 90); its page is dated 2021 and gives no 2026 schedule.
Check Alaska 511 for live conditions, cameras and construction before you leave the airport — or dial 511.
Royal Caribbean’s directions: about 130 miles down the Seward Highway from the airport, then follow the Alaska Railroad Dock signs; the terminal is on your left as you come into town.
For Whittier sailings, Princess asks fly-in guests to land five hours before the ship leaves, with its own transfers in mind.
Driving yourself to either port, keep at least that much in hand. Our drive times assume nothing goes wrong on the Seward Highway — not even a stop for gas.
Bound for Whittier, time the last stretch to an opening toward town, not to the ship’s clock. The hub has the tunnel schedule.
Reserve at ANC once the return is settled
Lock in the drop first and the rate second.
A cheap ANC car with nowhere to go back is a week of parking, not a saving.
Once the port desk has confirmed your day and the drop charge, search the airport for the class you need.
