The Nicest Night Near the Ship

Here’s the straight version: no hotel in Alaska is on AAA’s 2026 Four or Five Diamond lists, and we found no Forbes-rated hotel near either port. The nicer nights are a mountain resort on the train line, Anchorage’s landmark, a Seward lodge and three downtown picks, two of them by the depot.

None of the six publishes a ride to the ship. From Anchorage the trains leave the depot at 6:45 AM for Seward and 9:45 AM for Whittier, and the Historic Anchorage Hotel and the Marriott are the two by it; both trains also stop in Girdwood, by Alyeska.

Want the ride handled in Seward? Harbor 360, No. 1 for Seward, runs a free shuttle to the terminal, with free breakfast and the town’s only hotel pool.

FAQ

Splurge hotels FAQ

What is the nicest hotel near the Seward and Whittier cruise ports?

No hotel near either port is on AAA's 2026 Four or Five Diamond lists, and we found no Forbes-rated hotel in the region. The nicest night on offer is Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, AAA Three Diamond, with a spa, a tram and five restaurants, and both morning trains stop in Girdwood.

Is there a luxury hotel in Seward or Whittier?

Not by the ratings. In Seward, the Windsong Lodge is the biggest and the one with a restaurant and a harbor shuttle; Whittier has three small places. The nicer rooms are in Girdwood and Anchorage.

Do any of these hotels run a ride to the ship?

No. The Windsong's shuttle goes to the Seward harbor and downtown without naming the terminal. From Anchorage it's the train, a bus or your line's transfer, and the Historic Anchorage Hotel and the Marriott are both by the depot.

Can I leave my car at a splurge hotel while I cruise?

None of the six publishes cruise parking. Anchorage's airport long-term lot is $13 a day with a $78 weekly cap, per the airport.

Why isn't Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge on the list?

It's reached only by boat and sold as a multi-night package, so it doesn't work as the night before a cruise.
