Venice is the least settled embarkation port we cover. Start there. Since August 2021, Italian regulation has banned ships over 25,000 gross tons from the Giudecca Canal and St. Mark's Basin — the route past St. Mark's Square that made Venice one of the world's most photographed cruise departures. That ban followed years of protest over over-tourism, environmental damage, a 2019 collision between a cruise ship and a riverboat, and the city's ongoing flooding problems.
Large ships haven't stopped sailing “from Venice” — they've relocated. MSC still checks you in at Venezia Marittima, the old terminal by Piazzale Roma, then ferries you to the ship at Marghera, per MSC. The port's temporary big-ship berths are Lombardia and Liguria at Marghera, Fusina, which opened in August 2024, and Chioggia, per the government commissioner. Many cruises marketed “from Venice” actually start in Ravenna, about 2 hours 30 minutes south per Celebrity, or Trieste, about 150 km from Marco Polo airport per Holland America.
Ships under 25,000 GT are the exception: they can still come in through the lagoon. VTP, the terminal operator, told the trade paper Shipping Italy in March 2026 that San Basilio and Marittima stay in use for them. That's a press report, not VTP's own page, so check your documents. If a small-ship line is what you're booking, that changes almost everything else on this page.
This page describes the system as rechecked on October 3, 2026 against the cruise lines' own pages and the government commissioner's site; where those sources disagree, we say so rather than smoothing it into false certainty. Treat it as a starting point, and confirm the specifics directly with your cruise line before finalizing any travel plans.
Cruise lines sailing from here
Line deployments change every season, so this roster is dated and sourced, and it lives only here.
Checked on October 4, 2026 against the lines’ own pages, “Venice” now means five different starting points. MSC Cruises checks you in and takes your bags at the Venice Cruise Terminal in Venezia Marittima, then ferries you to the ship at Marghera, per MSC. Viking markets most of its sailings from “Venice (Chioggia)”, and one 2027 itinerary, Italy, Africa & Iberia Discovery, from “Venice (Fusina)”. Regent Seven Seas lists Seven Seas Grandeur from “Venice (Fusina)” in July 2027, yet its August 21, 2027 Seven Seas Prestige voyage now starts in Trieste, so check the voyage, not the line. Seabourn’s 2027 Mediterranean page starts Seabourn Ovation from “Fusina (Venice)”. Oceania lists Sirena from plain “Venice” in June 2027 and doesn’t name the berth. Celebrity sails from “Ravenna (Venice)” at Porto Corsini, which it puts about 2 hours 30 minutes south of Venice, and lists Ravenna again for 2027. Royal Caribbean’s summer 2027 announcement puts Brilliance of the Seas in Ravenna too. Holland America and Norwegian sail from Trieste, at Molo dei Bersaglieri 3; Holland America says that’s about 150 km (94 miles) and 2 hours from Marco Polo airport. Princess heads its page “Cruises from Venice (Trieste)” and uses Trieste’s port code, though one line of its copy still mentions a Venice Cruise Terminal. We read it as Trieste.
We found no current source for Carnival here, so it’s off the list rather than guessed at. VTP, the terminal operator, still wouldn’t load for us. In March 2026 it told the trade paper Shipping Italy that ships would keep calling at Fusina, Marghera, San Basilio and Marittima, the last only for ships up to 25,000 GT. Your boarding documents name the real terminal and city — book flights and hotels around those, not around the word “Venice”.

This roster replaces our September 14 list, which put Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Carnival at Marghera from secondary guides. Confirm your own ship and date before you book around it.
Where you can go
Venice sails the Adriatic first. Some itineraries keep going to the Greek Isles and finish in Athens instead of coming back, and Viking sells that run both ways. Athens (Piraeus) is an embarkation port in its own right, so its card opens our Piraeus guide. The other six have port pages of their own: Dubrovnik, Kotor, Split, Corfu, Katakolon and Santorini.

Not covered above: Venice is also a well-known port of call for cruises homeported elsewhere in the Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean — that relationship runs both ways, and isn't repeated here to avoid double-counting.
Not one port — and not the historic center anymore
Venice's cruise terminal picture is still moving, and this section says so plainly rather than presenting a tidy structure that doesn't exist. Ships over 25,000 GT must now come in through the Malamocco inlet to temporary berths, per the government commissioner: Lombardia and Liguria at Marghera, Fusina, and Isola Saloni at Chioggia. Venezia Marittima, by Piazzale Roma, still handles MSC's check-in and bags before a ferry out to Marghera. A permanent terminal on the Canale Nord at Marghera is planned — the port said in July 2024 that its first two berths would be ready for the 2027 season, a plan, not a promise. Several big lines skip the lagoon entirely — they sail “from Venice” out of Ravenna or Trieste, not Venice.
Third-party guides still disagree on which line uses which berth, and some of them are years out of date. We went to the lines’ own pages instead, and the table below follows them. Your boarding documents outrank all of it, so check them before you book a hotel or a transfer.
| Terminal | Location | Who uses it |
|---|---|---|
| Venezia Marittima (VTP, Fabbricato 248) | Historic Venice, one People Mover stop from Piazzale Roma | MSC check-in and bag drop, then a ferry to the ship at Marghera, per MSC |
| Marghera — Lombardia and Liguria | Mainland, across the lagoon | Temporary berths for ships over 25,000 GT; MSC's ships board here |
| Fusina | Mainland, south-west of Mestre | Cruise terminal opened August 2024; Regent, Seabourn and one Viking itinerary list it |
| Chioggia (Isola Saloni) | Southern end of the lagoon | Most of Viking's “Venice (Chioggia)” sailings |
| Ravenna (Porto Corsini) | About 2 hrs 30 min south of Venice, per Celebrity | Celebrity, as “Ravenna (Venice)”; Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas in summer 2027 |
| Trieste (Molo dei Bersaglieri 3) | About 150 km and 2 hrs from Marco Polo, per Holland America | Holland America, Norwegian and Princess; one Regent voyage in August 2027 |

Parking, in short
Two options are on record for a Marittima check-in. Highly volatile
VTP, the terminal operator, runs parking for cruise passengers inside the port area at Marittima. You book and prepay on its own site, parcheggi.vtp.it, and the form works out the fare from your ship and dates. We couldn't confirm a price, so get yours there. It covers Marittima only; a Fusina, Chioggia, Trieste or Ravenna sailing has its own arrangements, so check your line's departure details.
The city's Autorimessa Comunale (AVM) at Piazzale Roma charges €35 per 24 hours for cars up to 2.20 m on its own page, read October 3, 2026 — the €20 a day we printed before came from a general guide and is out of date.
Where should I park for a Venice cruise?
VTP’s own lot, the Piazzale Roma garage, and why an MSC sailing parks at Marittima, not Marghera.

Two airports, Marco Polo and Treviso, and which terminal you're headed to changes the trip — confirm it before you book ground transport.
| Airport | Taxi | Public transit |
|---|---|---|
| VCE — Venice Marco Polo | Fixed fares, per the airport: €45 to the cruise ship terminal (it doesn't say which), €40 to Piazzale Roma, €35 to central Mestre. About 9 miles (14.5 km) to Marittima by our routing. | Aerobus line 5 from €10, or ATVO's express in about 20 minutes, to Piazzale Roma; then the People Mover to Marittima for €1.50 (07:10–22:50 April to October). Alilaguna's boat is €18 but doesn't stop at Marittima. |
| TSF — Treviso Canova | No fixed fare published | ATVO's bus, timed to flights, from €14: Mestre in about 30 minutes, Venice in about 40. |
Fares from veneziaairport.it, veneziaunica.it, avm.avmspa.it, alilaguna.it and atvo.it, read October 3, 2026. Highly volatile — confirm your specific terminal (and even city) before booking ground transport.
The night before, ranked: we’ve scored twenty hotels for the night before a Venice cruise, from Piazzale Roma by the People Mover to Mestre and the airport, on what each one publishes. They’re ranked for Marittima and Fusina; sailing from Ravenna or Trieste, read the airport page first. Four worth knowing:
| Hotel | Where | One thing to know |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel Plaza | Facing Venezia Mestre station | Arranges a cruise transfer from €40, and puts Marittima 10 minutes away and Fusina 20, per the hotel. |
| Hotel Santa Chiara | On Piazzale Roma | “The only part of the historic city that can be reached by car”, per the hotel — the People Mover to Marittima stops here. |
| Elizabeth Unique Venice | Fondamenta Cannaregio | A “Free Buffet Breakfast”, per Marriott — the only included breakfast in our twenty. |
| Papadopoli Venezia MGallery | Giardini Papadopoli, Santa Croce | Accor puts the Port of Venice 1.4 km away, a 15-minute walk. |

Venice FAQ
Do cruise ships still dock in Venice's historic center?
Not the big ones. Since August 2021, ships over 25,000 gross tons have been banned from the Giudecca Canal and St. Mark's Basin — the route that made Venice famous as a cruise port. They now enter by the Malamocco inlet to temporary berths at Marghera (Lombardia and Liguria), Fusina and Chioggia, per the government commissioner, and some lines sail from Ravenna or Trieste instead. MSC still checks you in at Venezia Marittima, by Piazzale Roma, and ferries you out to Marghera. Smaller ships can still come in: VTP told the trade paper Shipping Italy in March 2026 that San Basilio and Marittima stay in use, Marittima for ships up to 25,000 GT. That's a press report, not VTP's own page, so check your documents.
Which cruise lines homeport at Venice, and where exactly?
Per the lines' own pages (October 4, 2026): MSC checks in at Venezia Marittima and boards at Marghera; Viking sails from Chioggia (one 2027 itinerary from Fusina); Regent and Seabourn list Fusina, though one Regent voyage in August 2027 starts in Trieste; Oceania says only “Venice”; Celebrity and Royal Caribbean sail from Ravenna, about 2 hours 30 minutes south by Celebrity's count; Holland America, Norwegian and Princess sail from Trieste, about 2 hours from Marco Polo per Holland America. We found no current source for Carnival. Confirm your own terminal with your line before you book flights.
Where does a Venice cruise actually go?
The Adriatic first, then Greece. Dubrovnik turns up most often, with Kotor, Split and Corfu close behind. Some sailings run one-way to Athens (Piraeus) and add Katakolon or Santorini on the way. Check whether yours is a round trip or a one-way — the two look nothing alike.
How much does parking cost near the Venice cruise terminals?
Two options are on record for a Marittima sailing. VTP runs parking for cruise passengers inside the port area, booked and prepaid at parcheggi.vtp.it, where the form works out the fare from your ship and dates; we couldn't confirm a price. It's for Marittima only, so check your line's departure details if you sail from Fusina, Chioggia, Trieste or Ravenna. The city's AVM garage at Piazzale Roma, one People Mover stop from Marittima, charges €35 per 24 hours (cars up to 2.20 m) on its own page, read October 3, 2026. The €20 a day we printed before came from a general guide and is out of date.
Is Venice a stable, reliable embarkation port to book around?
Less so than most. The berths have changed since 2021, a permanent terminal at Marghera is still being built, and even one line can use different ports in the same season — Regent sails from Fusina in July 2027 and Trieste in August. Confirm your terminal with your line before you book flights or a hotel, whatever this or any guide says.
