OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM), free-flow: no traffic and no stops, from Piazzale Roma to each town or site. Our routing, read Oct 3, 2026. Our routing
All five start at Piazzale Roma, where Hertz and Sixt have desks — so the numbers fit a car collected in the city.
Padua is the short one, about 25.9 miles (41.6 km) each way.
Lake Garda and Cortina are the long ones, both close to 96 miles.
These are empty-road times: no traffic, no stops, no hunting for a car park. Add a margin you trust.
Two of these in a day is a long day — pick one, and save the second for the other side of the cruise.
Padua’s Scrovegni Chapel: book the slot before you book the car
The closest of the five, and the strictest about tickets.
The Scrovegni Chapel in Padua charges €8 (about US$9) full or €6 (about US$7) reduced, plus a €1 (about US$1) booking fee, and opens Tuesday to Sunday, 9 to 7.
With the fee, two adults pay €18 (about US$20), our arithmetic.
You must book ahead, and same-day bookings aren’t possible — that’s the line that matters to a cruise passenger.
Book the chapel first, then set the car pickup around the slot, not the other way round.
It doesn’t open on Mondays, and it closes Nov 16 to 27 for inspections, which catches the season’s last sailings.
Verona’s camera gates, and when a rental may not pass them
Verona is the trip most likely to send a camera fine to your home address.
Verona’s ZTL runs weekdays 10 AM to 6 PM and 8 to 11 PM, and weekends and holidays 10 AM to 1:30 PM, behind 11 camera gates; only guests of hotels inside the zone, whose hotel registers the plate, may drive in (page updated Oct 24, 2025).
A rental on a day trip isn’t a hotel guest’s registered plate. Read those hours as “keep out”.
Park outside the zone and walk in — the gate doesn’t care that you only meant to look.
The fine comes by post, months later, through the rental company; the hub explains the chain.
The Arena di Verona’s 2026 opera festival ran June 11 to Sept 11; we didn’t read monument or parking prices.
By our routing, the Arena is about 69.6 miles (112.0 km) and 1 hr 19 min from Piazzale Roma.
The Prosecco hills with one driver who isn’t tasting
Wine country, north of the lagoon, and Italy’s alcohol rules are stricter for newer drivers.
Valdobbiadene is about 48.7 miles (78.3 km) from Piazzale Roma — about 1 hr 13 min on empty roads.
We read no official winery or tourism prices for the Prosecco hills around Valdobbiadene, so we can’t tell you what a tasting costs.
We can tell you the limit. The general limit is 0.5 g/l; it’s zero for anyone licensed under three years, drivers up to 21 and professional drivers, with fines from €527 to €6,000, roughly US$590 to US$6,735.
A driver who passed the test two years ago is at zero, not at one glass.
Pick the driver before the first stop — someone happy with water all day.
Cortina in the Dolomites, and Sirmione on Lake Garda
The two longest runs on the list, in opposite directions.
Cortina d’Ampezzo is about 97.0 miles (156.1 km) from Piazzale Roma, about 2 hr 03 min each way on empty roads.
The State Department says winter tires or chains are required on certain roads in autumn and winter, mountains especially.
Ask the desk about winter tires or chains for an autumn sailing — not just a winter one.
ATVO also runs a bus from the airport to Cortina d’Ampezzo, which spares the driver the mountain roads; we didn’t read its fare.
Sirmione on Lake Garda lies the other way, west past Verona: about 95.5 miles (153.6 km), 1 hr 47 min by our routing. We didn’t read Sirmione’s site prices.
Either one fills a whole day — a touring day, not a boarding day.
Italian road rules that catch American drivers out
Most of it is familiar. A few rules aren’t, and one of them is about cash.
ACI’s limits: 130 km/h on motorways (up to 150 where signed), 110 on main roads, 90 on secondary roads and 50 in towns (70 where signed); in rain, 110 on motorways and 90 on main roads.
In miles, 130 km/h is about 81 mph and 50 km/h about 31 — our conversion.
Dipped headlights must be on outside built-up areas, day and night. It isn’t a US habit, so switch them on as you leave the car park.
Carry a warning triangle (set it at least 50 m back) and wear a high-visibility vest when you step out on a road outside town. Fifty metres is about 165 feet.
Stopped by police, a foreign driver pays on the spot or leaves a deposit, or the car can be held for up to 60 days; the State Department says to be ready to pay cash in euros.
Carry some euros in cash for that reason — a card alone may not do.
We found no Italian handheld-phone rule in the sources we read, so we print none.
What one day to Verona and back costs in a rental
Two of you, a car from Piazzale Roma, Verona and back. Every box is editable.
The rental, line by line
All in euros, all our arithmetic. The €25 a day is our assumption — we don’t have a published Venice day rate in euros. Fuel is the 139-mile round trip to Verona at 30 mpg, priced at €7.77 a US gallon from the ministry’s €2.052-a-litre petrol average for Oct 3, 2026 (our conversion; diesel showed higher, which is unusual enough to recheck at the pump). We assume the 22% VAT is already in your quote. Piazzale Roma desks print no location charge, so that box starts at 0%. Verona admission and parking weren’t readable, so the admission box starts empty, and A4 tolls are left out for the same reason.
On those assumptions the day comes to about €61 (about US$70), about €36 of it fuel, before tolls and parking.
Split two ways, that’s a day out, not an extravagance. For one person, a tour may be simpler.
Type a tour quote into the last row and compare — our Venice shore excursions page lists tours that do the driving.
Booking a car for the Veneto days, not the ship days
Collect the car the morning you leave the city. Hand it back before you check in for the cruise.
If the trip comes after the ship, the after-cruise page covers disembark-day pickups. Deposits and coverage are in our Discover Cars review.
- Piazzale Roma and Mestre pickups
- Location on every result
- Bare $ sign on prices when we looked
- Cancel free up to 48 hrs before pickup
Prices and hours on this page were read on Oct 3, 2026. For dollars we used the European Central Bank’s Oct 2 reference rate, roughly $1.12 per euro; expect your card to differ a little.
Driving the Veneto: questions
Can you drive into Verona’s historic centre in a rental car?
Not during the ZTL hours: weekdays 10 AM to 6 PM and 8 to 11 PM, weekends and holidays 10 AM to 1:30 PM. Eleven camera gates record plates, and only guests of hotels inside the zone, registered by the hotel, may enter.
How long is the drive from Venice to Cortina d’Ampezzo?
About 97 road miles (156 km) and 2 hr 03 min from Piazzale Roma by our free-flow routing. The State Department says winter tires or chains are required on certain roads in autumn and winter.
Do you need to book the Scrovegni Chapel in advance?
Yes. Booking is mandatory and same-day bookings aren’t possible. It’s €8 full or €6 reduced plus a €1 fee, Tuesday to Sunday 9 to 7, closed Nov 16 to 27.
What is the drink-drive limit in Italy for tourists?
The general limit is 0.5 g/l. It’s zero for anyone who has held a licence under three years, drivers up to 21 and professional drivers, with fines from €527 to €6,000.
How far is Lake Garda from Venice by car?
Sirmione is about 95.5 road miles (153.6 km) from Piazzale Roma, about 1 hr 47 min on empty roads by our routing.
Do you have to drive with headlights on in Italy?
Yes, outside built-up areas. ACI says dipped headlights must be on outside towns at all times.
