What each cruise line means by “Venice”
Read this before you book a hotel in Venice. Two hours in the wrong direction is a long way to find out.
| Line | Port on the booking | Where you actually board | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSC Cruises | “Venice” | Check in at Venezia Marittima; MSC ferries you to the ship at Marghera | Line’s own page |
| Viking | “Venice (Chioggia)” | Chioggia, Isola Saloni; one 2027 itinerary from Fusina | Line’s own page |
| Regent Seven Seas | “Venice (Fusina)” | Fusina; one August 2027 voyage from Trieste | Line’s own page |
| Seabourn | “Fusina (Venice)” | Fusina | Line’s own page |
| Royal Caribbean | “Ravenna” | Ravenna (Brilliance of the Seas, summer 2027) | Line’s own page |
| Celebrity | “Ravenna (Venice)” | Porto Corsini, Ravenna | Line’s own page |
| Holland America | “Trieste (Venice)” | Molo dei Bersaglieri 3, Trieste | Line’s own page |
| Norwegian | “Venice (Trieste)” | Port of Trieste | Line’s own page |
| Princess | “Venice (Trieste)” | Port of Trieste; one line of its copy still says Venice | Line’s own page |
Read on each line’s site Oct 3, 2026. Itineraries change by sailing: your booking’s port line wins. Checked Oct 3, 2026
MSC is the one line in this table that checks you in at Venezia Marittima — then it ferries you out to the ship at Marghera.
Viking markets its 2026–2029 Adriatic sailings from “Venice (Chioggia)”, the Isola Saloni berth, and one 2027 itinerary, Italy, Africa & Iberia Discovery, from “Venice (Fusina)”. Regent Seven Seas lists Seven Seas Grandeur sailing from “Venice (Fusina)” on July 19, 2027, but its August 21, 2027 Seven Seas Prestige voyage now starts in Trieste, so check the voyage, not the line. Seabourn’s 2027 Mediterranean page starts Seabourn Ovation from “Fusina (Venice)”.
Celebrity lists the departure port as “Ravenna (Venice), Italy”, docking at Porto Corsini, “approximately two hours and 30 minutes south of Venice”. Royal Caribbean Group’s October 2025 announcement for summer 2027 has Brilliance of the Seas sailing from Ravenna.
Holland America sells “Trieste (Venice)” from Trieste Terminal Passeggeri, 3 Molo dei Bersaglieri, and runs no transfers from Treviso airport.
Norwegian markets “Venice (Trieste)”, with the ship leaving from the Port of Trieste.
Princess heads its page “Cruises from Venice (Trieste)” and uses Trieste’s port code, though one line of its copy still mentions a “Venice Cruise Terminal”. We read it as Trieste. We found no current Carnival sailing from Venice, Trieste or Ravenna, so Carnival isn’t on this list.
Until October 2026 our own Venice port guide put Royal Caribbean, NCL and Carnival at Marghera and Seabourn and Viking at Fusina, from secondary guides; we corrected it from the line pages above. Go by the line’s booking — not by any guide, ours included.
A permanent terminal on the north bank of the Canale Nord at Porto Marghera was planned in July 2024 for “the 2027 cruise season” (first two berths) and 2028 (the building); that’s a plan, not a promise.
Marco Polo to the Molo dei Bersaglieri in Trieste
Holland America, Norwegian and Princess put their “Venice” ships here, at the far end of the Adriatic.
Our routing puts the Trieste passenger terminal about 92.9 miles (149.5 km) from Marco Polo — about 1 hr 46 min on empty roads.
Holland America: Venice airport to the Trieste terminal is “approximately 94 miles (150 kilometers)”, about 2 hours. The two agree, which is rare.
From Piazzale Roma it’s about 6 miles further by our routing, so the airport is the shorter start.
Hertz Italy: “You may only drive the vehicle in the country of rental” unless permitted, which matters on the Trieste road, a short way from Slovenia.
If a side trip over the border tempts you, ask the rental company before you go — not after.
The train is the other way to do it, but we couldn’t read a fare to Trieste — the calculator leaves that row for you. Viator also lists a Ravenna-to-Piazzale Roma arrival transfer and a Venice-to-Trieste private transfer, seen only as search titles with no price.
South to Porto Corsini for a Celebrity or Royal Caribbean sailing
Celebrity and Royal Caribbean both sell Ravenna as Venice. It’s the longest drive of the three.
Celebrity’s two and a half hours is the figure to plan around.
Our routing agrees: Piazzale Roma to Porto Corsini is about 83.8 miles (134.9 km), about 2 hr 28 min; from Marco Polo it’s about 88.3 miles and 2 hr 32 min.
Fewer miles than Trieste, and a longer drive — the road south is slower, not shorter.
Our Porto Corsini pin is the locality, not the terminal gate — add time for the last stretch.
Fuel for the run is about €22 (about US$25) at 30 mpg, our arithmetic, before any toll we couldn’t price.
Celebrity’s City Stays include “private transportation between your airport, hotel, and ship” — which takes the drive off your hands if the price suits.
Chioggia and Fusina, the short drives for Viking and Regent
Two of the “Venice” ports on this page are close to the city. They still aren’t walkable from it.
Viking’s Chioggia berth is at Isola Saloni, about 32.9 miles (52.9 km) and 59 minutes from Piazzale Roma by our routing.
From Marco Polo it’s about 37.3 miles — an hour or a little over.
Fusina is the closer of the two, a short hop from Mestre — the hub has that distance on the Avis card.
Both are short enough that a one-way rental rarely makes sense on its own.
Price a taxi or the line’s transfer against a day’s rental plus a one-way fee; we couldn’t read a fixed fare to either port.
Rent for Chioggia only if the car is going somewhere else afterwards.
Pricing a car you leave in Trieste or Ravenna
Two of you, collecting at Marco Polo and leaving the car at the port. Every box is editable.
The rental, line by line
Our sum in euros, not a quote. The €25 day rate is assumed; Discover Cars’ airport page averaged roughly $23 a day on Oct 3, 2026, priced with a bare $ sign. Fuel is the 93-mile run to Trieste at 30 mpg, using €7.77 a US gallon — our conversion of the ministry’s €2.052-a-litre petrol figure for Oct 3, which came in below diesel, an odd result, so recheck it. From Piazzale Roma our routing adds about 6 miles of fuel. VAT (22%) is assumed already in the price; location charges start at 0% because none is printed. Leaving the car in Trieste or Ravenna is a one-way, and no brand prints that fee: type yours in the drop box. Seats and tolls aren’t added, for want of a readable price.
Before any one-way fee, that Trieste car comes to about €49 (about US$55) — roughly €24 of it fuel, our arithmetic.
Hertz Italy: one-way fees “may apply”, with no amount. Discover Cars puts the one-way fee inside its total, so search with the real drop-off.
That fee is the number that decides this. We couldn’t find it printed anywhere.
Type your quote into the drop box, then the train and transfer prices on the right. Our one-way guide covers how brands set the fee.
Autostrada tolls on the way to Trieste: what we couldn’t price
Both long drives use tolled motorway, and we couldn’t get a figure out of the operators’ calculators.
We couldn’t read the A4 or A27 toll calculators, so no toll is in any total on these pages.
Assume the motorway part of either drive is tolled — and budget for it even though we can’t print a figure.
Autostrade lists Telepass, cards, Viacard and cash at the booths, and lets you settle an unpaid toll online.
We’d rather leave the line blank than print a number we couldn’t read.
Check the toll on the operator’s site the week you travel. If you want it in the total, add it to the drop box above.
Booking the one-way to Trieste or Ravenna
Search with the true drop-off, the port town, so the one-way fee lands in the total you compare.
Ship at Chioggia or Fusina? Compare that total with a taxi before you click. How Discover Cars handles deposits is in our review.
- One-way fee in the total shown
- Pick-up at the P1 car park
- Showed a bare $ sign when we looked
- Cancel free up to 48 hrs before pickup
We reread every line page here on Oct 4, 2026, and the prices on Oct 3. Dollar amounts use the ECB’s Oct 2 reference rate, about $1.12 to the euro — your card’s rate won’t match it exactly.
Trieste, Ravenna and Chioggia: questions
Which cruise lines sail from Trieste instead of Venice?
Holland America sells “Trieste (Venice)” from the Molo dei Bersaglieri terminal, and Norwegian sells “Venice (Trieste)” from the Port of Trieste. Princess heads its Venice page “Cruises from Venice (Trieste)”, and one Regent voyage in August 2027 starts there too.
How far is Trieste cruise terminal from Venice airport?
About 92.9 road miles (149.5 km) and 1 hr 46 min by our free-flow routing. Holland America says approximately 94 miles (150 km), about 2 hours.
Where does Celebrity’s Ravenna (Venice) cruise leave from?
Porto Corsini, near Ravenna, which Celebrity puts at approximately two and a half hours south of Venice. Our routing from Piazzale Roma is about 83.8 miles and 2 hr 28 min.
Is Viking’s Venice (Chioggia) port far from Venice?
About 32.9 road miles from Piazzale Roma by our routing, around an hour without traffic, and 37.3 miles from Marco Polo airport.
Can I drive an Italian rental car into Slovenia from Trieste?
Not by default at Hertz: its Italian terms say you may only drive in the country of rental unless permitted. Ask the company before you book if you plan to cross.
How much are the tolls from Venice to Trieste?
We couldn’t confirm them: the A4 toll calculator wasn’t readable when we checked. Autostrade accepts Telepass, cards, Viacard and cash, and lets you pay a missed toll online.
