Venice

Venice is not one cruise port. It is six berths sharing a name, and your ship's gross tonnage decides which one you get. Ships over 25,000 GT have been barred from the Giudecca Canal and St Mark's Basin since 2021, and two of the berths sold as Venice are in other cities entirely.

Venice in brief

The first thing to establish about Venice is whether your cruise actually goes there — and for a lot of sailings the answer is no.

That is not a rhetorical opening.

Italian Decree-Law No. 103 of 2021, converted into Law No. 125/2021, declared St Mark's Basin, the San Marco Canal and the Giudecca Canal a national monument. It closed all three to large ships.

The thresholds are alternatives, not a single test. A ship is barred above 25,000 gross tons, above 180 metres in length, above 35 metres of air draft, or on fuel at 0.1% sulphur or more.

Any one of the four disqualifies a hull. A ship can sit comfortably under 25,000 GT and still be excluded on length.

The Library of Congress's Global Legal Monitor and the Italian government's own cruise commissioner state the four the same way. That part is settled.

What is not settled, and changes by ship and by season, is where the excluded vessels go instead.

Venezia Terminal Passeggeri's own 2026 season data names five berthing areas — Fusina, Porto Marghera on the Liguria and Lombardia quays, San Basilio, the Marittima for ships up to 25,000 GT, and the moorings at Chioggia.

Then there are the ports that are not Venice at all — and two major lines sell them under the name anyway.

Norwegian sells sailings as "Venice (Ravenna)" and "Venice (Trieste)." Royal Caribbean sells "Ravenna (Venice)."

Neither line's own page, read September 21 2026, states a distance anywhere on it.

So the parenthesis is doing enormous work. Ravenna's berth at Porto Corsini is roughly 145 km from Venice; Trieste is roughly 150.

Book one of those and you may step off the ship, ride a coach for over two hours, get four hours in Venice, and ride back.

That is a day trip to Venice, not a Venice cruise.

This page covers the berths, the paperwork and the physical business of getting out of each one — not the tours.

The tours, the ticket traps and the time budget for each berth live in our Venice shore excursion guide instead.

If you are embarking rather than calling, the Venice departure port guide handles airports, terminals and parking.

On foot from the ship

One Footbridge
San Basilio, and you are in Venice

The best arrival in the port, and only small ships get it. Cross the footbridge and you are on the Zattere promenade in Dorsoduro — St Mark's is a 15 to 20 minute walk, and vaporetto Line 2 leaves from the stop right there.

~4 Min · People Mover
Marittima to Piazzale Roma

€1.50 on AVM's own tariff, running every 10 minutes. From Piazzale Roma, St Mark's is 30 to 35 minutes on vaporetto Line 2 or roughly 40 on foot, per venicevisitpass.com.

Nothing Walkable
Marghera, Fusina and Chioggia

Marghera and Fusina are working industrial quays on the mainland with no pedestrian route out — you take the transfer your line arranges, a pre-booked car, or you do not leave. Chioggia has a public bus into Venice (Arriva Veneto's 80, about an hour, €6.90), but nobody publishes whether the Isola Saloni mooring reaches a stop on foot — ask the ship.

~2h15 to 3h
Ravenna or Trieste to Venice

Sources spread widely. A Viator operator says about 2h15 by van from Ravenna; diycruiseports.com says 2.5 to 3 hours by coach. Trieste runs 2 to 2.5 hours by road, or 2h03 on the fastest direct train per Trainline.

03

What's nearby, broadly

St Mark's Square St Mark's Basilica Doge's Palace Rialto Bridge Grand Canal Dorsoduro and the Zattere Murano Burano

From San Basilio all of that is a walk or one vaporetto. From Marghera or Fusina none of it is reachable without a boat or a coach somebody else has arranged, and from Chioggia there is a public bus — if you can reach it. Establish which berth you have before you plan a single hour of the day.

Commonly reached from

Venice is unusual in this region: VTP reports that over 95% of its 2026 calls are homeport turnarounds rather than day visits, so most people reading this are starting or ending a cruise here, not calling for eight hours. If that is you, the Venice departure port guide covers terminals, airport transfers and check-in, and Venice cruise parking covers driving to the ship. If Venice is one stop on an Adriatic loop, the Dubrovnik, Split, Kotor and Corfu port guides cover the stops that most often travel with it.

Practical notes

Current as of September 21, 2026 Review periodically

The access fee is the single most misreported thing about visiting Venice, and the reporting is usually a year behind.

The contributo di accesso is a trial, not a permanent tax, and it runs on a published calendar of specific days each year.

For 2026 the Comune di Venezia set 60 days between April 3 and July 26, charged from 08:30 to 16:00 only.

It ran at €5 if you booked by the fourth-to-last day before your visit — and €10 from three days out.

It applies to day visitors aged 14 and over entering the Ancient City — the official FAQ exempts ages 0 to 13, so a 14-year-old pays. There is no cruise-passenger exemption, and a ship's organised excursion does not create one.

What creates one is geography, not status.

The official FAQ at cda.ve.it lists Piazzale Roma, Santa Lucia station, the Stazione Marittima and the San Basilio landing stage among the areas where nothing is due.

So the terminal is outside the charged zone and the city beyond it is inside. Walk into Venice on a charged day and you owe it.

As we write, on September 21 2026, nothing is owed at all. Venezia Unica's own page states that as of July 27 the access fee does not apply, and no 2027 calendar had been published when we checked.

Do not carry any of these numbers into next spring. Check cda.ve.it against your own sailing date, because the calendar is set fresh each year and the price tiers have moved before.

Italy is in the Schengen Area, so a U.S. passport holder needs no visa for stays up to 90 days in any 180.

The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since April 10, 2026, so non-EU visitors register fingerprints and a photo at their first Schengen border crossing instead of getting a passport stamp — check your line's own guidance on where that happens for your sailing.

The two headline tickets both need handling in advance, and one of them is a genuine trap for a morning arrival.

St Mark's Basilica moved to a €10 online-only ticket with a fixed entry slot in July 2025, up from €6 at the gate.

There is no walk-up any more. The Basilica's own tariff page lists €20 with the Pala d'Oro, €20 with the Museum and Loggia, €30 for everything and €15 for the bell tower.

The Doge's Palace is the trap. Its own site sells the St Mark's Square Museums ticket at €35, or €30 booked online more than 30 days ahead.

And its own visitor page warns that holders of that ticket without a specific time slot are admitted from 12:00 onwards.

Read that against a ship that berths at 07:00 and sails at 16:00 — and book a timed slot, or spend your morning somewhere else.

Summer hours are 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry at 18:00, dropping to 09:00 to 18:00 from November 1.

A gondola is priced by the city, not by the gondolier.

The Comune's own tariff is €90 for 30 minutes between 09:00 and 19:00, and €110 for 35 minutes after that. Up to five people, one price, on a rate approved in April 2023.

Public transport is expensive here, and worth pricing before you buy. A single ACTV vaporetto ticket is €9.50 and lasts 75 minutes — a 24-hour pass is €25.

The Fusina boat to Zattere is not an ACTV line and is not covered by those tickets. Terminal Fusina's own schedules page prices it at €10 one way and €15 return, hourly, roughly 08:00 to 22:00 — on a seasonal timetable, with no winter schedule published.

Acqua alta is an autumn and winter problem, and MOSE has changed its shape rather than removed it.

The barriers were raised 97 times between 2020 and the end of 2024, at roughly €200,000 a closure.

St Mark's Square sits among the lowest ground in the city. A tide in the +80 to +109 cm band still wets it at levels too low to trigger the barriers.

Check the Comune's tide forecast the morning of a November call, and carry the boots the hotel lends you.

One thing we could not settle.

Whether a shuttle runs from Marghera into Venice on a transit call, what it costs, and where it drops you: three guides, three different answers.

MSC's own page is the only first-party number we found: excursion guests go by boat from the ship at Marghera to Piazza San Marco in about 45 minutes. Ask your line directly rather than trusting any guide, this one included.

VTP's own website could not be reached in this pass — every attempt failed on a certificate error, the same failure Seabound recorded on September 14 2026. No berth-assignment table is claimed here because we could not read one.

Venice FAQ

Can cruise ships still dock in central Venice?

Small ones can. Decree-Law No. 103 of 2021, converted into Law No. 125/2021, closed St Mark's Basin, the San Marco Canal and the Giudecca Canal to large ships. The thresholds are 25,000 gross tons, 180 metres in length, 35 metres of air draft, and 0.1% sulphur fuel. Any one of those bars a ship. Vessels under all four still use the Marittima and San Basilio — VTP's own 2026 season data names both.

Where do large cruise ships berth for Venice now?

It depends on the ship, and there is no single answer. VTP's 2026 season data lists Fusina, Porto Marghera's Liguria and Lombardia quays, San Basilio, the Marittima and the Chioggia moorings. Separately, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean sell Adriatic sailings badged "Venice (Ravenna)" and "Venice (Trieste)" that berth in those cities instead. Confirm the berth name on your own booking before you buy a flight or a hotel.

Is a cruise that docks at Ravenna or Trieste really a Venice cruise?

Not in any practical sense, and you should price the difference before you book. Ravenna's cruise berth at Porto Corsini is roughly 145 km from Venice and Trieste roughly 150. Published transfer times run from about 2h15 by van to 3 hours by coach for Ravenna, and 2 to 2.5 hours by road for Trieste. Neither Norwegian's nor Royal Caribbean's own port page states a distance at all.

What is Marghera like, and can I walk out of it?

No. Marghera is a working industrial port — the Liguria quay sits inside the PSA Vecon container terminal — and there is no pedestrian route out. You use whatever transfer your line arranges. MSC's own Venice page says its excursion guests go by boat from the ship at Marghera to Piazza San Marco in about 45 minutes. It also says check-in for embarkation happens at the Stazione Marittima first, not at Marghera.

How do I get from Fusina into Venice?

By water, on the Line 16 boat to Zattere — 25 to 30 minutes, €10 one way or €15 return on Terminal Fusina's own tariff, hourly from roughly 08:00 to 22:00 on a seasonal timetable — the operator publishes no winter schedule. One caution: sources disagree on whether the cruise berth adjoins that ferry dock. Crystal's own Venice port guide offers the ferry as a transfer option for its guests; CruiseAlert says the two are about 2 km apart by road with no footpath. Confirm with your ship.

Do cruise passengers have to pay Venice's access fee?

When it is running, yes — there is no cruise exemption. The 2026 contributo di accesso applied on 60 days between April 3 and July 26, from 08:30 to 16:00. It ran at €5 booked four or more days ahead and €10 after that, for everyone aged 14 and over entering the Ancient City — ages 0 to 13 are exempt. The official FAQ exempts the areas you pass through rather than the people: Piazzale Roma, Santa Lucia, the Stazione Marittima and the San Basilio landing stage are outside the charged zone. As of July 27, 2026 the fee is not in force and no 2027 calendar has been published.

How long is a typical Venice call?

Eight to ten hours, on the schedules we could read. CruiseDig and Crew Center both list Explora II at 08:00-18:00, MSC Lirica at 07:00-16:00 and Costa Deliziosa at 09:00-17:00 for late September 2026. But most Venice traffic is not a call at all — VTP reports over 95% of 2026 calls are homeport turnarounds, and about 40% of premium-ship calls involve two or more days alongside.

When is the Venice cruise season, and what about acqua alta?

Our own Mediterranean guide puts it at April through November, and the shoulder months beat high summer. The 2026 season actually opened earlier — on March 16, with Viking Star at Fusina. Acqua alta is an autumn and winter risk that MOSE has reduced rather than ended. The barriers closed 97 times between 2020 and the end of 2024, and St Mark's Square still takes water at tides too low to trigger them.
