01

In brief

Piraeus is one of the Mediterranean’s busiest cruise ports. The port authority counted 810 cruise calls in 2024, and 600 of them started or ended a cruise here. It’s also the gateway to the Greek Isles most people picture — Santorini’s cliff villages, Mykonos’s windmills and the wider Aegean beyond.

It has a line most ports don’t: Celestyal Cruises, a Greek company that uses Piraeus as its main home port, not one stop on a global network. At least six international lines homeport here too, led by Celebrity, which lists Athens on its own destinations page.

Piraeus has three cruise terminals, and MSC’s own Piraeus page settles the naming: Terminal A (Miaoulis) is entered through Gate E11, and Terminals B (Themistocles) and C (Alkimos) through Gate E12. The other gates, E1 to E10, serve the ferries. Your cruise line assigns the terminal ahead of the sailing.

Cruise lines sailing from here

Rosters change by season, so the list lives in one dated block. Check it against your own booking.

Current as of September 14, 2026

Celestyal Cruises is the one line on this list that treats Piraeus as its primary hub, not as one homeport among several. It's a Greek line, based where it sails from. We don’t have a Celestyal guide yet, so its name below isn’t a link. Celebrity Cruises is confirmed directly on Celebrity's own Athens (Piraeus) destinations page. Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, and Costa Cruises are confirmed via aggregated turnaround-schedule data. Virgin Voyages is confirmed directly on Virgin's own Athens-based Greek Isles itinerary pages.

The list is shorter than the traffic. The port authority counted 810 cruise calls in 2024, and 600 were homeport calls, where a cruise starts or ends at Piraeus. So more lines turn ships around here than the seven we’ve confirmed by name, seasonal and smaller ones among them — confirm yours with the line.

Where you can go

Piraeus sits deep in the Aegean, a short sail from the Cyclades, which makes it the most natural Greek Isles start of any port we cover. Venice is the one stop below that’s also an embarkation port. Some lines run one-way Athens-to-Venice itineraries, so its card opens the Venice guide; the other six open each port’s own cruise-port page.

Common, not guaranteed — port order and content vary by line, ship, and season, so check your specific itinerary rather than assuming from the pattern below.

Three terminals, two cruise gates

Cruise ships at Piraeus use three passenger terminals. MSC’s own Piraeus page names them: Terminal A (Miaoulis), entered through Gate E11, and Terminal B (Themistocles) and Terminal C (Alkimos), both entered through Gate E12. Holland America lists all three, with Akti Miaouli 10, 185 38 as the address and Terminal A as the one closest to the port entrance.

The numbered gates E1 to E10 are the ferry gates for the islands, so a hotel “next to the port” may be next to the ferries. No line publishes a fixed terminal; MSC says “terminal assignments may vary”, so your pre-departure documents name yours. The port authority, OLP, runs a free shuttle among the passenger terminals and the ships.

Athens (Piraeus) FAQ

Which cruise lines actually homeport at Athens (Piraeus)?

At least seven, confirmed as of September 2026: Celestyal Cruises (a Greek line based at Piraeus as its primary home port), Celebrity Cruises (confirmed directly on Celebrity's own site), Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises, and Virgin Voyages (confirmed on Virgin's own Athens-based itinerary pages). The port authority counted 810 cruise calls in 2024, 600 of them homeport calls, so seasonal and smaller lines turn ships around here too — check yours.

Which gate do I use at Piraeus?

Your cruise line assigns the terminal. Piraeus has three: Terminal A (Miaoulis), entered through Gate E11, and Terminals B (Themistocles) and C (Alkimos), both through Gate E12, per MSC’s own Piraeus page; Holland America lists all three at Akti Miaouli 10. Gates E1 to E10 serve the ferries. MSC says terminal assignments may vary, so check your documents.

Where does a cruise from Athens (Piraeus) actually go?

The classic Greek Isles and Aegean mix. Santorini and Mykonos are the most consistent stops, confirmed directly on Celebrity's own destinations page. Crete (Heraklion), Kusadasi (Turkey), and Rhodes appear regularly. Valletta (Malta) and Venice (on one-way itineraries) appear on a narrower set of sailings. Check your own line's specific itinerary — port order and content vary by ship and season.

How much does parking cost near the Piraeus cruise terminals?

We found no official single-day rate. POLISPARK's Agios Nikolaos lot sold multi-day packages for cruise travelers in September 2026, €35 for 3 days and €60 for 7, about €8.57 a day on the week (our arithmetic, not a posted rate). Its site showed no prices when we re-checked on October 3, 2026, so call ahead.

How do I get from Athens airport to Piraeus?

Holland America puts the port 20 miles (32 km) from the airport, about 60 minutes depending on traffic, and that’s the figure we quote here. Our own road routing comes out longer, about 31 miles (50 km), because it follows the motorway a car actually drives; Holland America doesn’t say how it measured. Metro Line 3 runs to Piraeus in about 60 minutes (€9); the X96 express bus runs 24/7, about 90 minutes (€5.50), per OASA; a taxi runs on the meter — Holland America estimates €60, and the airport’s €50 fixed fare covers central Athens, not Piraeus.
