Should You Rent a Car for a Piraeus Cruise?

For the ride from the airport to the ship, almost never. Metro Line 3 runs from the airport to Piraeus for €9 (about US$10) a person, the X96 bus runs all night for €5.50 (about US$6), and a US licence alone isn’t enough to drive in Greece. A car starts to earn its keep when Sounion, Corinth or Delphi is on the list, and you’ve got the permit in your bag.

Short answer

Athens to the ship needs a ticket, not a car

You can reach any Piraeus terminal from the airport by rail, bus or taxi. The real question is what else you want to see.

Before the quiz

Skip the rental if the plan is fly in, sleep and sail. Rail and an express bus both run from the airport to Piraeus, taxis wait outside the terminals, and there’s no public parking at the pier. Rent for the day you head out of Athens, then give it back.

A car makes sense if

  • Sounion at sunset, Corinth or Mycenae is on the list
  • Five or more of you, with cruise luggage
  • You’re touring the Peloponnese before or after

Leave it if

  • It’s ATH, a hotel and the ship
  • Your days are the Acropolis and the Plaka
  • Nobody has, or will get, an International Driving Permit

Most of the case against a car here is the city, not the distance.

Central Athens runs an odd/even plate ring on weekdays for part of the year — the Athens page walks through it.

The case for one is the countryside. Delphi, Mycenae and the canal don’t keep metro hours.

Four taps

Is your Piraeus trip a metro trip or a road trip?

The plan, the headcount, the permit and the gearbox. One answer per row, and the reading appears.

The permit

The permit Greece asks of an American driver

This is the one question that can end the car plan by itself, so it comes before the fares.

The US Embassy in Athens: “Tourists and temporary residents who plan to stay in Greece up to six months, must carry a valid U.S. license as well as an International Driving Permit.”

It names AAA and AATA as the only US issuers. Order it before you fly — the embassy names no way to get one once you’re in Greece.

Without the proper documents, the embassy says, a US citizen “may be arrested and face trial”. That’s the embassy’s wording, not ours.

The State Department adds that insurers “may require that you have both your valid U.S. license and an international driver’s permit (IDP) for coverage in Greece”.

Read that line twice. A missing permit can cost you the cover, not just a fine.

The rental desk may not ask for it — the police and your insurer can.

The State Department says Greece has “one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the European Union”, bans phone use while driving and runs random alcohol tests.

No permit, no rental — book the metro and a tour instead.

No keys

Metro, X96 or a taxi from ATH to your terminal

Three ways from the arrivals hall to the ship, none of which needs a parking space at the other end.

Metro Line 3 runs from the airport through Piraeus to Dimotiko Theatro, one stop beyond, in about 63 minutes; airport trains run every 36 minutes, from the airport 6:10 AM to 11:34 PM and from Dimotiko Theatro 5:30 AM to 10:54 PM. Until further notice, night works on Sunday to Thursday cut the last through trains to 9:10 PM from the airport and 9:06 PM from Dimotiko Theatro, per STASY; later trains stop at Syntagma.

The metro airport ticket is €9 (about US$10) one way (€4.50 reduced) or €16 (about US$18) return, valid 30 days. For two of you that’s €18 (about US$20) one way; four pay €36 (about US$40) — our arithmetic.

The X96 express bus runs between the airport and Piraeus around the clock, about 90 minutes, €5.50 (about US$6) (€2.70 reduced). Four people ride for €22 (about US$25) — and it runs when the metro doesn’t.

OASA names its Piraeus end “Port of Piraeus”, with a link to metro Line 1, and a travel guide puts it at Karaiskaki Square on the ferry side, not at the cruise gates. Allow for a walk or a cab at the Piraeus end either way.

The 3-day tourist ticket costs €20 (about US$20) and “Includes 2-way travel from and to the Athens International Airport”. Two of you staying three days pay €40 (about US$45) and the airport rides come free inside it — the better buy if Athens comes first.

Piraeus station to Terminal A is about 1.1 road miles, our routing; to the B/C side about 1.6. With cruise bags, B and C are a cab from the station, not a walk.

Athens airport’s fixed taxi fare to the city-centre inner ring is €50 (about US$55) by day (5 AM to midnight) and €65 (about US$75) at night, all surcharges in, the same both ways. It rose from €40 and €55 (about US$60) by ministerial decision in September 2026.

There’s no fixed fare to Piraeus: the meter runs, and a transfer reseller estimates about €50 to €67 before tolls, while Holland America estimates €60 (about US$65).

Uber at Athens Airport works “in partnership with local licensed Taxi drivers”, at the flat fares, from opposite Exit 4; Freenow, now “Freenow by Lyft”, also operates in Greece.

A car for two, at €42.55 (about US$50) with the toll, runs to about 70% of Holland America’s €60 taxi estimate — before fuel, parking and the trip back from wherever you leave it.

For one traveller, the metro wins by a mile. For six, the sums tighten — run your own on the airport calculator.

How do I get from Athens Airport to Piraeus cruise port without a car?

Metro Line 3 runs to Piraeus in about an hour for €9, the X96 express bus runs 24 hours for €5.50 in about 90 minutes, and taxis are metered with no fixed fare to Piraeus. Holland America estimates the taxi at €60.

Is there a fixed taxi fare from Athens Airport to Piraeus?

No. The airport’s fixed fares, €50 by day and €65 at night, cover the city-centre inner ring only. Piraeus is metered.

Does Uber work at Athens Airport?

Yes, through licensed taxi drivers at the fixed fares, picked up opposite Exit 4, per the airport. Freenow by Lyft also operates in Greece.
