Price the ATH-to-Piraeus car against the metro and a cab
Change anything. The fuel box starts empty because we couldn’t read an official Greek pump price for October.
The rental, line by line
Our arithmetic in euros, not a quote. The €40 a day is our assumption, a little under the $47 average (about €42) Discover Cars showed for Piraeus Port on Oct 3, 2026. Greek quotes normally include the 24% VAT, we assume, so none is added; Hertz’s 13% applies only if you pick Hertz. The toll is one Attiki Odos pass at the €2.55 press figure. Fuel waits for your pump price a litre, since we couldn’t read an official one, and the seat stepper adds nothing because we found no Greek seat price. Conversions use the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 rate, about $1.12 to the euro; your card’s will differ.
With our defaults, two people and one day at €40 (about US$45), the car comes to €42.55 before fuel: the rate plus one Attiki Odos toll.
The metro carries the same two for €18 (about US$20), and the X96 for €11 (about US$12) — less than half.
Switch the pick-up to Hertz and its 13% adds €5.20 (about US$6) on a single day, our arithmetic.
Type a pump price into the fuel box and that line fills in — we won’t guess one for you.
Six people with bags change the sum. Six metro fares are €54 (about US$60), and six on the X96 €33 (about US$35). At that size the car and the fares draw closer. For two, they never do.
Six brand groups at Exit 4, and the cheaper names off-site
One counter area serves the big names; the reseller results add firms you’ll meet by shuttle.
Avis, Hertz, Enterprise, Sixt, Avance and Europcar share the arrivals-hall counters, with Budget, Thrifty, Alamo, National and the rest under their parents’ desks.
The airport lists them all as open around the clock — though individual stores can change that, it warns, in exceptional circumstances.
Discover Cars says most suppliers it lists at the airport are off-airport, around Koropi, with free shuttles from Exit 5. That’s where many of the low “from” prices live — a shuttle ride, not a walk.
Avis’s own page lists its airport branch at the 5th km of Spata–Loutsa Avenue with a 24-hour drop-off.
The taxi rank is Exit 3 and Uber’s pickup is opposite Exit 4, so the three options sit within a few doors of each other.
Every desk detail, with the city and port listings beside it, is on the Piraeus hub.
Hertz’s 13% Athens airport line, and nobody else’s
Some brands add a percentage for an airport pick-up. At Athens, only one of them tells you how much.
Hertz Greece’s general terms put its airport charge at 6% everywhere in Greece except Athens’s Eleftherios Venizelos airport, “where the charge is 13%”, plus a municipal tax of 0.5% at some locations.
Hertz’s terms page carries no date or version that we could see (re-read Oct 4, 2026); it’s one brand’s rule, so our calculator applies it only when you pick Hertz at the airport.
No other brand page we read prints an Athens airport percentage. Our calculator starts every other brand at 0% — an unknown, not a promise of none.
On a three-day Hertz rental at €40 a day, 13% is about €15.60 (about US$18), our arithmetic.
Open the price breakdown before you pay. If an “airport” or “premium location” line appears, type its percentage into the box above.
Attiki Odos between the airport and Piraeus
Our routing from the airport to Piraeus runs on Attiki Odos, a tolled motorway.
The Greek press reports the Attiki Odos car toll at €2.55 (about US$3) from Jan 1, 2026, and a January 2026 question in the Greek Parliament gives the same €2.55 a pass. The toll page on aodos.gr still printed €2.80 (about US$3) when we read it on Oct 4, 2026, with no date, so carry a little more than the press figure.
The calculator counts one pass for the one-way drive, at the press figure, and the toll-days stepper adds more.
It’s small money. The point is that the line on your statement shouldn’t surprise you.
Tolls toward Corinth and the Peloponnese are bigger and better documented; the day-trip page has the operator’s table.
Twenty miles or thirty-one? The airport-to-ship distance
Two honest sources, two different numbers.
Holland America calls it “20 miles or 32 kilometers (60 minutes, depending on traffic)”.
By our routing, Athens Airport to Terminal A is about 31 miles (50 km) and 47 minutes with no traffic. Holland America doesn’t say how it measured. Ours follows the Attiki Odos motorway a car actually drives. So we use it for the drive — and Holland America’s hour for the timing.
To the B and C side, our routing says about 31.4 miles and 48 minutes.
Free-flow means no traffic and no stops — Holland America’s hour is the safer plan on a weekday.
Our Terminal A point is a street on Akti Miaouli; the B and C figure uses Akti Xaveriou as a stand-in, since the breakwater berths wouldn’t geocode.
Automatics at Athens Airport are the exception
Filter before you compare: in the sample we read, the default Athens rental still has three pedals.
Discover Cars’ Athens Airport sample on Oct 3, 2026 was nearly all manual: one automatic showed, a Citroën C3 at $5.38 a day, sample dates not shown.
If you can’t drive a stick, filter for automatic before you compare a single price.
Book early — a thin list of automatics fills first.
Your Greek quote names its own class and seat count; check the luggage line too, because a five-seat “SUV” may not take five cruise suitcases.
| Vehicle class (Enterprise’s US figures) | People | Suitcases |
|---|---|---|
| 7-passenger minivan | 7 | 5 |
| Full-size SUV | 7 | 3 |
| Standard SUV | 5 | 5 |
| Midsize car | 5 | 3 |
As Enterprise publishes them for the US; Greek fleets are mostly manual in the sample we read, and your quote names the class you’ll get. Checked Sept 27, 2026
What the cruise lines sell for the airport-to-ship leg
A ship’s transfer costs more than the metro, and it sometimes buys you a tour.
Holland America sells an embarkation-day Athens and Acropolis tour with airport pickup and transfer to the ship, from $134 a person, about 3.5 hours, only for flights landing before 10 AM. It turns the transfer into a morning at the Acropolis — something no rental does.
Viking includes round-trip airport transfers when you buy air through it.
We found no public per-person airport transfer price for Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Costa, Celestyal or Oceania. Check your booking for the figure; type it into the calculator’s last row.
Those dollar prices are as the lines print them, not our conversion.
Book the ATH car only if the day goes somewhere else first
If the car only takes you to the ship, the metro already won on price.
If it takes you to Sounion first, it’s a different sum — price that here.
