Five drives out of Barcelona, timed from Terminal D
The table gives you the drive. The sections below give you the reason to make it, and what we couldn’t find out.
| From Terminal D to | Distance | Free-flow time | What we could confirm | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Montserrat abbey | 38.5 mi (62 km) | 1 hr 08 min | Basilica 7 AM–8 PM; rack-railway and parking prices unreadable | Hours confirmed |
| Sitges | 26.8 mi (43.1 km) | 47 min | C-32 barrier €8.42 if the route uses it | Toll: news report |
| Vilafranca del Penedès | 37.2 mi (59.9 km) | 54 min | No winery prices or hours read | Drive only |
| Tarragona amphitheatre | 61.8 mi (99.4 km) | 1 hr 25 min | No ticket price or hours read | Drive only |
| Girona cathedral | 66.4 mi (106.9 km) | 1 hr 30 min | No ticket price or hours read | Drive only |
OSRM routing, one way, no traffic and no stops — our figures, Oct 3, 2026.
Every time in that table is a floor, not a forecast.
OSRM assumes empty roads and no stops — real traffic and a coffee only add to it.
We timed from Terminal D because that’s where our trip research started; Sixt Paral·lel-Port, where you’d probably collect, is about 2.1 road miles from it.
Girona lies north of the city and Tarragona south, so a day holds one or the other, not both.
Montserrat: drive the mountain, or let the rack railway do it
Montserrat’s monastery is the obvious day out from Barcelona, and the one a train reaches too.
Montserrat’s basilica opens 7 AM to 8 PM. Trains from Barcelona connect hourly with the rack railway and the cable car; the rack-railway and parking prices sit on a ticket site our reader couldn’t open.
Without a parking price, we can’t tell you whether driving up beats the train and rack railway for a family of four — and we won’t guess.
The drive we can give you. The abbey is about 38.5 miles (62 km) from Terminal D, 1 hr 08 min on empty roads. A round trip is about 77.0 miles, which at 30 mpg is about 9.7 litres of fuel by our arithmetic.
If you want to be on the mountain when the basilica opens at 7, the car sets the start time — not the train timetable.
Catalonia’s tolls after the AP-7: what’s still charging
The AP-7 went toll-free in 2021. Two roads near Barcelona still charge.
AP-7 tolls in Catalonia ended on Sept 1, 2021, per Catalan public broadcaster 3Cat (updated July 2023); the C-33 isn’t on its list of roads that still charge.
For most cruise drives, that’s the end of the toll question.
Still tolled: the C-32 south of Barcelona (the Garraf tunnels to El Vendrell) and parts of the C-16 (the Vallvidrera tunnels, Terrassa–Manresa and the Cadí tunnel).
3Cat put the 2026 car toll at the C-32 Castelldefels–Sitges barrier at €8.42 at weekends and for drivers not registered for the weekday commuter rate, with the Cubelles access at €5.03 per The Objective.
On the C-16, the same January reports gave €5.81 (about US$7) at Sant Vicenç de Castellet on weekdays with a Via-T tag, €9.76 (about US$11) otherwise, €14.56 (about US$16) for the Cadí tunnel and €5.28 (about US$6) at peak for the Vallvidrera tunnels, after a rise of about 3%.
Those are January news-report figures — we didn’t read the operators’ own tables.
We can’t tell you which barriers your route will cross, either. OSRM gave us a distance and a time — not a road list. Check the route in your map app before you set off, and decide whether the toll is worth the time it saves.
We couldn’t read any brand’s toll terms either, so ask at the desk how a barrier charge reaches your bill. Dollar figures use the European Central Bank reference rate of Oct 2, 2026 (about $1.12 to the euro); your card’s rate will differ.
Sitges for two: what a one-day Barcelona car comes to
Sitges is the short drive with the toll. Change anything in the calculator, including the pump price.
The rental, line by line
Our sum in euros — your booking screen has the real one. The €40 (about US$45) a day is a placeholder we chose, since Discover Cars printed only a dollar “from” rate. VAT is assumed to be inside a Spanish quote, location fees start at zero because no desk prints one, and car seats add nothing because we found no Spanish seat price. The toll line counts the C-32 Castelldefels–Sitges barrier at €8.42 each way, a January 2026 news figure; take the C-31 coast road and set the toll-days box to 0. Fuel stays at zero until you type a pump price a litre, since we couldn’t read an official one for October. Distances run from Terminal D.
At our €40 placeholder and both C-32 passages, the day comes to €56.84 (about US$65) before fuel, our arithmetic.
The fuel box stays empty until you type a pump price. The round trip is about 53.6 miles, roughly 6.8 litres at 30 mpg, so even a high pump price adds little.
For two people, the car buys you the timetable, not a saving we could prove — we read no train or tour fare to Sitges.
Type a tour quote in the right-hand box to see the gap.
Girona and the Costa Brava, or Tarragona and the Penedès
North toward the Costa Brava, or south-west along the coast and inland. Each is a full day.
Girona’s cathedral is about 66.4 miles (106.9 km) from Terminal D by our routing, 1 hr 30 min with the roads to yourself.
Its round trip is about 132.8 miles, roughly 16.8 litres of fuel — the biggest fuel line on this page.
The airport that carries the Costa Brava’s name, Girona’s, is served mainly by Ryanair and sits about 46 miles (74 km) from central Barcelona, per Wikipedia — if you land there, the airport page has its drive to the ships.
South-west, Tarragona’s Roman amphitheatre is 61.8 miles (99.4 km) out, 1 hr 25 min. We read no ticket price or hours for it.
Vilafranca del Penedès, in the wine country inland, is the short one at 37.2 miles (59.9 km) — under an hour, and again no winery prices or hours that we could read.
A winery visit and a designated driver are the same decision. Spain’s drink-drive limit wasn’t in the DGT page we read, so plan as if the answer is none.
We printed no ticket prices here because we read none. Check each site’s own page before you plan the day around it.
Fitting a Catalonia day around the ship
The car fits around the cruise, never through it.
Collect the morning after you land
Pick up in town unless you’re heading straight out — Sixt Paral·lel-Port opens at 7. The desk list has the rest.
Give the car back, not to the quay
The port won’t let it wait and Palacruceros bans cars overnight from 11 PM. Return it at the desk, then sail without it.
Rent on disembark day, or the day after
Every desk on our list opens by 8 AM. The after-cruise page matches their hours to the ship’s arrival.
End at the airport
Sixt at El Prat takes cars back 24 hours, so a last-day Montserrat run can finish at the flight, not in town.
The pattern that works is one car, one day, returned the same night.
Stretch it to three or four days only if you’re actually touring — then book that as a separate trip, not as part of the cruise.
Book the day-trip car from the harbour end of town
Collect near the port if you’re staying by the harbour, or at Sants if you arrive by train.
Check that the result’s pick-up line names the desk you mean. Our Discover Cars review covers what its Full Coverage does and doesn’t include.

Barcelona day trips by car: the questions
How long is the drive from Barcelona cruise port to Montserrat?
About 38.5 miles (62 km) from Terminal D to the abbey, roughly 1 hr 08 min on empty roads by our OSRM routing. Traffic leaving the city will add to that.
Are there tolls on the AP-7 near Barcelona?
No. AP-7 tolls in Catalonia ended on Sept 1, 2021, per 3Cat. The C-32 south of Barcelona and parts of the C-16 still charge.
How much is the toll from Barcelona to Sitges?
Catalan broadcaster 3Cat put the C-32 Castelldefels–Sitges barrier at €8.42 for a car in January 2026, at weekends and for drivers without the registered weekday rate. The C-31 coast road avoids it; we didn’t check which road your route takes.
Can you get to Montserrat from Barcelona without a car?
Yes. Montserrat’s own site says hourly trains from Barcelona connect with the rack railway and the cable car up the mountain. We couldn’t read the ticket prices, which sit on a separate booking site.
How far is Girona from Barcelona cruise port?
About 66.4 miles (106.9 km) from Terminal D to the cathedral, about 1 hr 30 min without traffic by our routing.
