Off the ship and to a Barcelona rental desk: what’s open at 7:30
Pick the day and the time you’ll walk off. The checker reads each desk’s published hours, in Barcelona time.
We set the checker to 7:30 on a Saturday — an early hour to be ashore, and your line sets the real one.
Several desks show “Not open yet” — Avis and Enterprise in town start at 8, and Avis Sants keeps its weekend start at 8 too.
Sixt Paral·lel-Port, Sixt Barceloneta, and Sixt and Enterprise at Sants are already open — and so is everything at the airport.
Creuers says it has a taxi rank at every terminal.
Take the cab to the desk, not the bags to the bus stop.
Your line sets the disembarkation order, not the port. The hub’s desk cards have every address and phone number.
Barcelona’s ZBE low-emission zone and a rental car
Barcelona’s low-emission zone sounds like a trap for renters. For a Spanish-plated car, it mostly isn’t — the number plate is the reason.
Barcelona’s low-emission zone, the ZBE Rondes, covers about 37 square miles (95 km²): the city plus L’Hospitalet, Sant Adrià and parts of Esplugues and Cornellà; the ring roads themselves are outside it.
It runs Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 8 PM, per Catalan public broadcaster 3Cat in March 2026, when the city switched it back on after a two-month pause during the Rodalies rail crisis; the official ZBE pages wouldn’t render for us.
It bars petrol cars from before 2000 and diesels from before 2006 that carry no DGT environmental label.
The metropolitan registry: “Vehicles registered outside Spain are not classified according to DGT environmental label criteria and, for this reason, all must register to circulate within the ZBE”.
That rule is about the plate, not the driver.
A Spanish-plated rental carries a DGT label already; a travel blog (Barcelona Lowdown) says rental cars are “seldom more than one or two years old”, so they qualify. On that logic, a rental from a Spanish desk is the car least likely to have a ZBE problem — not the most.
Fines ran from €100 (about US$110) to €1,803 (about US$2,025) by vehicle and pollution episode in the 2020 report; Barcelona Lowdown (2023) gives €200 (about US$225), halved if paid within 20 days.
We couldn’t read any brand’s terms on how a camera fine reaches a renter — ask at the counter.
The rule that catches visitors is the foreign-plate one: a French-plated one-way, say, needs registering before it enters.
Driving a Barcelona rental back to El Prat for the flight home
El Prat takes rental cars back around the clock. Collect near the port, drive, and hand the keys over at the terminal.
The rental, line by line
In euros, by our arithmetic. The €40 (about US$45) rate is a placeholder, so type yours. VAT is assumed to be in the price, and location fees sit at zero unless your quote lists one. Fuel covers 9 miles, our airport-to-WTC routing run backwards, once you type a pump price; we read no official one. Holland America’s dollar fare is converted at the ECB rate. A one-way charge between a city desk and El Prat, if your quote has one, goes in the drop box.
At our €40 (about US$45) placeholder, a car collected by the port and left at El Prat comes to €40 before fuel and any one-way charge, against the €46 (about US$50) T-4 cab and US$78 for two on Holland America’s transfer, about €69 at the ECB rate.
The rental only makes sense here if the day holds something else: Montserrat in the morning, the flight in the evening.
Any hour works at El Prat. Sixt’s desk never closes, Avis takes drop-offs around the clock and Enterprise has drop-boxes in both terminals’ car parks.
If El Prat doesn’t suit the day, Sixt Barceloneta takes cars back at any hour in the Plaça Pau Vila car park, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from WTC South and 12 minutes from Terminal D by our routing.
Holland America sells the ship-to-airport run from $39 a person, about 30 minutes, booked at least three days ahead; flights 11 AM to 1 PM take the 7:45 AM bus, 1 to 3 PM the 8:15, and 3 PM on the 9:00.
Those departure times are the line’s own estimate — disembarkation plus the ride, with a margin built in.
Driving it yourself, leave at least as much slack. Dollar figures use the European Central Bank reference rate of Oct 2, 2026 (about $1.12 to the euro); your card’s rate will differ.
A late flight and a full day: where the bags go
A cruise ending at 8 AM and a flight at 9 PM leaves a long day.
Bounce lists luggage storage across Barcelona from €1.80 (about US$2) a bag a day. Bags&Go keeps a left-luggage desk at the Trasmediterránea terminal on the Moll de Sant Bertran, no price published.
With a car, the boot is the luggage room — until you park it.
Leave nothing visible in a parked rental — not at Montserrat, not in town.
If the plan is a city day, store the bags and skip the car entirely — a car in the old town is a parking bill we didn’t price, not a convenience.
Book the post-cruise car for the morning you’re ashore
Choose a pick-up a short cab from your terminal and a drop-off at El Prat if you’re flying out the same day.
The one-way between a city desk and the airport may carry a charge; the final total will show it. Our Discover Cars review explains its fees.

After a Barcelona sailing: the questions
What time do Barcelona car rental offices open?
On our list, Sixt Paral·lel-Port, Sixt Barceloneta and the Sixt and Enterprise desks at Sants open at 7 AM daily; Avis Sants opens at 7 on weekdays and 8 at weekends; Avis on Passeig de Gràcia and Enterprise at Plaça Catalunya open at 8. Sixt at El Prat is open 24 hours.
Do rental cars need a ZBE sticker in Barcelona?
A Spanish-registered rental carries a DGT environmental label already. Vehicles registered outside Spain have no DGT label and must register before entering the ZBE, per the metropolitan registry.
What are the ZBE hours in Barcelona?
Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 8 PM, per Catalan broadcaster 3Cat in March 2026, when the city restored the zone after a pause from January 22 to March 16. The official ZBE pages wouldn’t render for us.
Can I return a rental car at Barcelona airport at night?
Yes. Sixt at El Prat is open 24 hours, Avis takes 24-hour drop-offs, and Enterprise has after-hours drop-boxes in the T1 and T2 car parks.
How early should I leave the ship for a flight from Barcelona?
Holland America books flights between 11 AM and 1 PM onto its 7:45 AM transfer, 1 to 3 PM onto the 8:15, and later flights onto the 9:00, and asks for at least four hours between the ship’s arrival and the flight.
