Madrid to a Barcelona ship: almost seven hours by car, two and a half by train
Your flight lands in Madrid and your ship sails from Barcelona. This is the leg in between.
Take the train unless the drive itself is the holiday. Ouigo runs the line in about 2 hours 30 from €9 (about US$10) an adult and €7 (about US$8) a child; the car needs a full day, fuel for nearly 400 miles and a desk to hand it back to in Barcelona.
Ouigo runs Madrid Puerta de Atocha to Barcelona Sants in about 2 hours 30, from €9 an adult and €7 a child aged 4 to 13; its Madrid–Barcelona page lists a first train at 6:22 AM and a last at 8:10 PM from Atocha (read Oct 4, 2026). Renfe’s AVE runs the line too, but we didn’t read its prices, nor Iryo’s.
Even the 6:22 from Atocha reaches Sants around 9 at the earliest, our arithmetic. Sleep in Barcelona the night before — a late train is a missed ship, not a refund.
Our routing puts Terminal D to Atocha at 388.6 miles (625.3 km), about 6 hours 57 minutes without a stop. Add stops and the Madrid ring roads and you lose the day.
The car wins in one case. You want Zaragoza, Aragón or a winery on the way, and you’ve a spare night to spend on it.
Even then, end the drive at a Barcelona desk — the port has nowhere to leave it.
A Madrid one-way car against two Ouigo seats
The rate, the drop charge and the pump price are yours to change.
The rental, line by line
Our estimate in euros; your quote decides. The €40 (about US$45) a day is our stand-in, since Discover Cars’ one-way figure was a dollar “from” rate. We assume VAT is in the price and add no Madrid location fee, because none was printed. Fuel covers 389 miles, our routing run in reverse, and stays at zero until you type a pump price a litre. The drop-charge box is blank because no brand prints one for this route, and we didn’t research tolls outside Catalonia, so none are added. Type any seat charge as coverage.
At our €40 (about US$45) placeholder, with no drop charge and no fuel typed, the car shows €40 against €18 (about US$20) for two Ouigo adults at the “from” fare — before the two numbers that decide it.
The first is fuel. 389 miles at 30 mpg is about 13 US gallons — roughly 49 litres, our arithmetic. Multiply by the pump price and type it in.
The second is the one-way drop charge — we couldn’t find one printed for this route.
A family of two adults and two children pays €32 (about US$35) on Ouigo at the “from” fares. Fares climb as seats sell, and we didn’t read Renfe’s or Iryo’s.
What a Madrid-to-Barcelona one-way costs to book
One-way rentals between two cities rarely cost what the headline says.
Discover Cars showed a Madrid-to-Barcelona one-way “from $18.35 per day” (970 offers) on Oct 3, 2026, without the one-way fee wording; its Madrid page started at $9.91 a day.
A “from” price is the lowest-priced car in the search, not the one you’ll want for four people and their cases.
No brand page we read prints a Madrid-to-Barcelona one-way fee, so we can’t tell you whether that figure carries a drop charge on top.
Read the total at the last screen, not the daily rate on the first.
Our one-way rental guide explains how drop charges work, and our Discover Cars review covers its fees and Full Coverage. Dollar figures use the European Central Bank reference rate of Oct 2, 2026 (about $1.12 to the euro); your card’s rate will differ.
Off the train at Sants: the last four miles to the ship
The train ends a short cab ride from the port.
Sants station is 4.2 miles (6.8 km) from Terminal D, 2.7 miles from WTC South and about 4.4 from the MSC terminal, by our routing.
That’s a taxi ride of 9 to 17 minutes on empty roads, on the meter — with supplements for a Sants pick-up and for the Moll Adossat that the decision page lists.
If you still want a car for a day out of Barcelona, three brands have desks at or beside the station — the hub has their hours.
Book that car for the day you use it, not the day you arrive.
Driving Madrid to Barcelona: what we checked and what we didn’t
About seven hours of motorway, and a low-emission zone at the end of it.
Inside Catalonia, the AP-7 has been toll-free since 2021; the day-trip page lists the roads that still charge.
Outside it, across Aragón and Madrid, we didn’t research the tolls — check your route before you assume a free run.
Barcelona’s low-emission zone covers the city on weekday daytimes. A Spanish-plated rental carries the label it needs — the after-cruise page explains the rules.
The US State Department says you must have an International Driving Permit to drive in Spain — the decision page lays out where Spain’s own rules differ.
End at a city desk the evening before you sail. The port lets you drop passengers, not leave a car.
