Croatia on tour, from Zagreb to the Dubrovnik walls
Prices on this page are from-prices in US dollars per person sharing, before flights, from the operators’ own pages unless we label a reseller listing. Here’s one real route, end to end.
- Dubrovnik3 nightsThe tour opens on the walled city, with three nights at the Hilton Imperial.
- Split2 nightsTwo nights at Hotel Park for the Roman palace town.
- Zagreb2 nightsA meeting with Croatia’s former Minister of Tourism; lunch at Trakošćan Castle on the way north.
- Ljubljana2 nightsSlovenia’s capital, and an early-access electric train ride into Postojna Cave.
- Rovinj2 nightsThe Istrian coast, with a truffle hunt on a family farm.
- Venice1 nightThe tour ends across the Adriatic in Italy.
From $10,790 per person; Tauck lists 2027 departures, April to June and August to November. Small Group dates average 24 guests. Stops and nights from Tauck’s itinerary page.
Coach tour or small yacht: two ways down the coast
Croatia’s best sights are split between an inland national park and a string of islands. No single format reaches both well.
You’re choosing between a road trip and a week at sea. The coach version is the full country: Trafalgar’s Best of Croatia and Slovenia starts in Zagreb, spends two nights at Lake Bled, one near Plitvice and two each in Split and Dubrovnik.
The sailing version is the islands, not the interior. G Adventures’ Sailing Croatia boards in Trogir and calls at Hvar, Korčula and Mljet National Park on the way to Dubrovnik.
Read the boat terms before the price. G Adventures’ yacht has five cabins and five bathrooms for 10 guests, no included meals, and power only in port.
Want islands with hotel beds? Globus’s Croatia Island Hopper and G Adventures’ Walking & Island-Hopping trip use ferries, hydrofoils and catamarans between hotel stays.
Decide road or water first. The rest of the page sorts itself out after that.
Plitvice Lakes: timed tickets and a morning on the boardwalks
If you only have one inland day in Croatia, it goes here. Get the timing right and it’s the highlight.
Plitvice is the inland stop every classic Croatia tour builds around. The park sells timed tickets: you can’t enter before the time printed on yours, and you can arrive up to an hour after it.
Prices follow the season. In 2026 an adult day ticket costs €10 from November to March, €23 in April, May and October, and €40 from June to September before 4 p.m. (before 3 p.m. in September), dropping to €25 later in the day.
Children under 7 enter free. Swimming in the lakes is strictly prohibited.
The park says its paths aren’t wheelchair accessible throughout. If walking is hard for you, ask the tour which route it takes and how long the group stays on its feet.
Tours that sleep near the park reach the boardwalks early. Rick Steves and Trafalgar both spend a night near the park.
Boardwalk trails at Plitvice
Day 7 of Rick Steves’ Best of the Adriatic: the whole morning on the trails past travertine cliffs, lakes and waterfalls, with a park boat ride of about half an hour.
Lunch break
After the hike, before the long drive.
Over the Dinaric Alps to the sea
About five hours on the road to the Dalmatian coast and Split.
Orientation walk in Split
A first walk through the old town. Rick Steves rates the day strenuous: 2 to 8 miles with hills, stairs and uneven ground.
What to ask your operator
Is the Plitvice ticket in the fare, and what entry time does the group hold? A 7 a.m. slot and a 2 p.m. slot are very different days in August.
Dubrovnik: the walls, the ships and when to walk them
Nearly every Croatia tour starts or ends in Dubrovnik, and it’s where the cruise ships call. Plan your hours around theirs.
You’ve probably heard about Dubrovnik’s cruise crowds. The city has pushed back: Mayor Mato Franković said in September 2025 that Dubrovnik allows two cruise ships a day, each staying at least eight hours.
The same “Respect the City” program has been reported as capping arrivals at about 4,000 cruise passengers. The mayor also said entry to the City Walls would move to advance booking from 2026.
A land tour has the advantage here. Most of the tours we checked spend two or three nights in Dubrovnik, so you walk the walls early, before ship passengers arrive, or after they leave.
Ask whether wall tickets are included and pre-booked. Wall prices change; check the current figure when you book.
Coming in or out by ship?
Our Dubrovnik cruise port guide covers the Gruž terminal and the bus to the Pile Gate, and Dubrovnik shore excursions prices the walls, the cable car and the Kotor day trip.
Split has its own pages: the Split cruise port guide and Split shore excursions.
When to go: shoulder months, summer boats, quiet winters
You’re weighing price, crowds and which boats are even sailing. Plitvice’s price list maps the seasons better than any brochure.
Spring: the tours start up
Plitvice charges €23 for an adult in April and May, against €40 in summer. Most 2027 coach and small-group calendars open in April.
- Trafalgar’s Best of Croatia and Slovenia runs from April 4, 2027, at $3,995 to $4,195 in April
- Rick Steves, Globus Island Hopper and G Adventures’ island walk all start in April
- G Adventures’ sailing trips start in May 2027, from $2,049; Trafalgar’s May 9 and May 30 dates were its priciest we saw, $4,850
Summer: boats, families and full prices
June to September is Plitvice’s top band, €40 before the afternoon cutoff. It’s also when the family boats sail.
- Tauck Bridges’ Croatian Coast family voyage runs June to August 2027
- Rick Steves lists no July starts on its 2027 Adriatic tour; Tauck’s Adriatic Treasures skips July too
- After 4 p.m. from June to August the adult ticket drops to €25, if your tour arrives late
Autumn: the season winds down
Plitvice returns to €23 in October and €10 from November. Coach tours keep running; boats mostly stop.
- Rick Steves has October 2027 departures
- Tauck’s Adriatic Treasures runs into November
- Cosmos lists its Slovenia and Croatia tour from April to October 2027
Winter: few tours, low prices
Plitvice costs €10 for an adult from January to March and in November and December. Most tour calendars go quiet.
- Collette sells a Winter in Croatia tour built around Plitvice and the coast
- Island boats don’t sail on the calendars we checked
- Fit for a city-and-lakes trip, not a beach one
We don’t quote average temperatures or crowd counts; the operators don’t publish them. The tabs use Plitvice’s own price calendar and the operators’ 2027 departure months.
How many days Croatia takes
You’re fitting Croatia into your vacation days. The operators’ own itineraries give a clean answer.
Lengths from the operators’ 2027 listings. Days include arrival and departure days.
Our rule of thumb
A week for the coast, 11 days for Plitvice plus the coast, and two weeks if you want Slovenia or Mostar too. Short trips that try to do all three spend their days in the coach.

From-prices in USD per person sharing, before flights. “Reseller” means the agency Global Journeys; the Globus Escapes fare is a sale price that moves. Tauck Bridges is priced per person in a triple cabin. Intrepid’s sailing fare wasn’t tied to a date on its page. Contiki’s 8-day Croatia Island Sail (ages 18 to 35) isn’t in the table because its US fare wasn’t published on the page we read; ask us for it.
Coach operators: Trafalgar, Globus, Cosmos, Collette
They own the Zagreb-to-Dubrovnik route. Trafalgar averages 45 guests on this tour; Collette includes the most meals, 17 in 12 days.
Rick Steves
Fourteen days with Slovenia’s Soča Valley and Mostar in Bosnia. Tips are in the fare; half the dinners aren’t.
Small groups and boats: G Adventures, Intrepid
Yachts of 10 or 11 guests between Split and Dubrovnik, plus island trips by ferry and hydrofoil with hotel beds.
Luxury: Tauck, A&K
Tauck’s Adriatic Treasures runs Dubrovnik to Venice in 13 days. Its Bridges family yacht and A&K’s 8-day coast trip both cost more than $800 a day.

What Croatia costs per day, and all-in
Croatia runs from about $167 to more than $1,000 a day. The headline numbers hide very different inclusions.
Our arithmetic on the from-prices above. Inclusions differ: the sailing trips include no meals; Collette’s coach tour includes 17; Rick Steves includes tips.
Read the cheap end carefully. The Globus Escape is a sale fare on a trip that also covers Albania, and the sailing trips leave every meal and the food kitty to you.
For the full Zagreb-to-Dubrovnik route, the real floor is about $311 to $350 a day on Globus or Collette, and about $341 on Trafalgar’s lowest fare.
All-in math
What a Croatia tour costs once you land
We filled in Trafalgar’s Best of Croatia and Slovenia at its lowest listed fare, with the midpoints of Trafalgar’s tip guidance. The meals figure is our starting estimate; change it, and swap in your own quote.
Best of Croatia and Slovenia includes 10 breakfasts and 4 dinners, so about 17 meals are yours. On a G Adventures sailing trip, use its own guidance instead: at least €10 a day for the leader, a food kitty, and $250 to $325 for other meals; leave the driver box at zero. Rick Steves includes tips, so set both tip boxes to zero. Add your flights to the total.

Matcher

Five taps: budget, road or water, how much ground, group size and length. It suggests tours from the table above.
Slovenia, Bosnia and Montenegro: the add-ons
Croatia’s neighbors are close enough to share a tour. Two of them come with a border post.
| Add-on | On which tours | Border notes |
|---|---|---|
| Slovenia: Lake Bled, Ljubljana, Postojna Cave | Trafalgar (two nights at Bled), Collette, Rick Steves (two in Ljubljana), Tauck (two in Ljubljana), Globus The Croatian, Cosmos | Inside Schengen; land border checks with Croatia ended in 2023 |
| Bosnia and Herzegovina: Mostar | Rick Steves (one night), Globus Croatia Island Hopper (starts in Sarajevo) | Outside Schengen; border checks remain |
| Montenegro: Kotor | Dubrovnik day trips; G Adventures and Intrepid sell Croatia–Montenegro sailing trips | Outside Schengen; border checks remain |
| Italy: Venice | Tauck Adriatic Treasures ends there; Intrepid’s Dubrovnik to Venice | Inside Schengen |
Slovenia is the easy add. It’s inside Schengen, a short drive from Zagreb, and most 11-day coach tours already include Lake Bled or Ljubljana.
Bosnia and Montenegro take a passport check at the border. Keep your passport on you, not in the coach’s luggage bay.
Cruising past Kotor instead? Read our Kotor cruise port guide and Kotor shore excursions.
Tipping, cash and the costs nobody mentions
Tips on a Croatia tour depend on who you book. A few entry fees depend on the month.
| Who | Guidance | Source |
|---|---|---|
| G Adventures leader (sailing) | At least €10 per person per day | Trip page |
| G Adventures local guides | €3–€5 a day; restaurants about 10%; other service €1–€2 | Trip page |
| Trafalgar Travel Director and driver | $5–$7 and $3–$5 per person per day | Trafalgar tipping guide |
| Rick Steves guide and driver | Tips included | Tour page |

Cash and cards
Croatia has used the euro since January 1, 2023. G Adventures advises bringing up to about €300 in cash, because not all restaurants take cards.
Withdraw from ATMs on arrival, it says, rather than changing money at hotels. Declare €10,000 or more at the border.
Entry tickets and fees
Ask which tickets your fare covers: Plitvice, Krka, the Dubrovnik walls, the Srđ cable car. On G Adventures’ sailing trip, optional activities run about €30 to €80 a day, Mljet park entry €15 to €25.
Croatian hotels also charge a nightly tourist tax. Its rate isn’t on any page we could check, so ask whether nights you add yourself include it.
Passports, flights to Zagreb and Dubrovnik, and the clock
Croatia is easy on a US passport. The tricky part is that tours start and end in different cities.
Most coach tours start in Zagreb and end in Dubrovnik, so book an open-jaw ticket: into Zagreb, home from Dubrovnik. Rick Steves starts in Ljubljana; Tauck ends in Venice.
Fly in a day early, so a missed connection doesn’t cost you the first day. Your hotel registers you with the police, which the State Department says must happen within three days of arrival.
Leaving the road on a hike? The State Department notes de-mining continues along former front lines; mined areas carry warning signs, so stay on marked paths.
Solo, families and slower travelers in Croatia
Twin-share pricing is built for couples. These are the better starting points for everyone else.
| If you are… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Traveling solo on a boat | G Adventures Sailing Croatia | No single supplement if you share with a same-sex roommate; My Own Room from $1,639 |
| Traveling solo by coach | Rick Steves Best of the Adriatic | A published single supplement of $840, with tips included |
| A family with kids 8 and up | Tauck Bridges Croatian Coast: Family Voyage | 34-guest yacht with a waterslide, rafting at Omiš, Mljet by kayak or bike; from $6,790 in a triple |
| A family on a coach budget | Adventures by Disney Croatia & Slovenia | New for 2027, 8 days, with family and adult-only departures; ask us for the fare |
| Older, or slower on your feet | Collette Discover Croatia | Three nights in Dubrovnik and Plitvice by boat as well as on foot; Collette rates it activity level 3 |
| After a small group | Globus Croatia Island Hopper | 18 guests at most, Mostar and Hvar included, 10 days from $4,479 |
| After the most comfort | Tauck Adriatic Treasures | Two or three nights a stop, grand hotels, from $10,790 |
Mobility limits change the choice. Plitvice’s trails aren’t wheelchair accessible throughout, and Tauck warns of frequent stairs and cobblestones on its Adriatic tour.
If stairs and gangways are hard, a private tour lets you set the pace.
Extra nights, cruise combos and booking windows
Zagreb before, a ship after, or both. Plan the edges of the trip when you book the middle.
Before and after the tour
Collette sells a two-night Zagreb pre-tour for $999 per person. Tauck transfers you free from its approved pre- and post-tour hotels.
Adding a cruise
Globus sells A Taste of Croatia with a coastal cruise, 14 days from $6,299. Collette’s Croatia & Its Islands puts seven nights on a small ship.
Already booked a big-ship Adriatic cruise? Add a land tour before or after it. See Mediterranean cruises and the Venice cruise port guide.
How far ahead to book
Yachts of 10 or 11 guests fill fast, and Trafalgar already showed sold-out dates in April and May 2027. For June or September, we’d book about a year out; our booking-window guide compares the operators’ deadlines.
Deposits and insurance
Trafalgar’s deposit starts at $200; Tauck’s is $600, with final payment 90 days out on land trips. Some insurance benefits depend on buying soon after your deposit; read our purchase-window guide first.
Before you book a Croatia tour
These are the lines that change the price or the trip. Tick them off as you go.
Your Croatia checklist
Ticks aren’t saved. Deposits and cancellation terms are on each operator’s guide below.
Who should tour Croatia, and who should go alone
Book a tour if
- You want Plitvice and the coast in one trip; the inland leg is hard to do well without a car
- You want the islands without planning ferries; a yacht trip does it in a week
- You want Slovenia or Mostar folded in, with one guide and one set of bookings
- You’re traveling solo and want a ready-made group on a boat
Look elsewhere if
- You only want Dubrovnik and one island; a hotel and the ferry will do
- You need full wheelchair access at Plitvice; the park says its trails don’t offer it
- You’re already on an Adriatic cruise; add a land tour, not a combo
- You need a big suitcase and cabin space; skip the sailing trips
Our take
For a first trip, take the 11-day coach route from Zagreb to Dubrovnik on Trafalgar or Globus, and make sure it sleeps near Plitvice. That gets you the lakes early and Dubrovnik after the ships leave.
If you’ve done the mainland, or you’d rather swim than ride a coach, the 8-day yachts from G Adventures and Intrepid are the cheapest way onto the islands, at about $256 to $282 a day before the kitty.
Either way, ask about the Plitvice entry time before you pay the deposit.

What Croatia first-timers ask us
How many days do you need for Croatia on a tour?
About 11 days covers the classic coach route from Zagreb through Plitvice and Split to Dubrovnik; Trafalgar’s Best of Croatia and Slovenia and Globus’s The Croatian both run 11. A week covers the coast alone, such as Globus’s 7-day A Taste of Croatia or an 8-day sailing trip. Add Slovenia and Bosnia and you’re at 13 to 14 days, like Rick Steves’ Best of the Adriatic.
Do I need to book Plitvice Lakes tickets in advance?
The park says it’s highly recommended to buy online, and you can’t enter before the time printed on your ticket (you can arrive up to an hour after it). In 2026 an adult day ticket costs €40 before 4 p.m. from June to August, €23 in April, May and October, and €10 in winter. On a tour, ask whether the ticket is included; most coach tours we checked include the visit.
Is Dubrovnik too crowded with cruise ships?
It can be busy, but the city now caps cruise calls. Dubrovnik’s mayor, Mato Franković, said in September 2025 that the city allows two ships a day, each staying at least eight hours. Land tours usually spend two or three nights in Dubrovnik, so you get the Old Town in the early morning and evening, when day visitors have gone.
Do US citizens need a visa or ETIAS for Croatia?
No visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180. Croatia joined the Schengen area in 2023; the State Department says your passport must be valid three months past departure and recommends six. The EU’s Entry/Exit System has run in full since April 10, 2026 (fingerprints and a photo at the border, free). ETIAS isn’t live and had no confirmed start date as of late October 2026.
What currency does Croatia use?
The euro, since January 1, 2023. G Adventures advises bringing some cash, up to about €300, because not every restaurant takes cards, and withdrawing euros from ATMs rather than exchanging at hotels. Montenegro and Bosnia day trips sit outside the Schengen area, so carry your passport.
Can I see Croatia by boat instead of by coach?
Yes. G Adventures and Intrepid sell 8-day sailing trips between Split and Dubrovnik on yachts of about 52 to 57 feet with 10 or 11 guests, from about $2,049 and $2,257. Collette’s Croatia & Its Islands spends seven nights on the small ship MS Desire, and Tauck Bridges runs a family voyage on the 34-guest yacht Lupus Mare in summer 2027.
How much should I tip on a Croatia tour?
G Adventures suggests at least €10 per person per day for the leader on its Croatia sailing trip, €3 to €5 a day for local guides and about 10% in restaurants. Trafalgar suggests $5 to $7 a day for its Travel Director and $3 to $5 for the driver. Rick Steves includes guide and driver tips in the fare.
