Fourteen days, Dublin to Belfast: one real route
It helps to see a whole trip before you compare prices. This is the one that covers the most ground on both sides of the border, with a three-night stop in the middle.

- Kinsale2 nightsKilmainham Gaol and the Rock of Cashel on the way down; a harbor-town walk and Charles Fort.

A day on this tour: day 12, the Causeway Coast
The Giant’s Causeway
The basalt columns most visitors cross the border for, with the local legends that go with them.
Dunluce Castle and Carrick-a-Rede
A ruined clifftop castle, then the rope bridge out to a tiny island.
About 4 hours in all
Rick Steves publishes each day’s bus time. Several days on this route run about 5.
Into Belfast
Two nights in Northern Ireland’s capital before the tour ends after breakfast on day 14.
When to go: light, rain and crowds
Ireland doesn’t do reliable weather. It does reliable light: you pick between long, busy summer days and short, cheap winter ones.
Spring: the quiet sweet spot
Intrepid’s guide puts spring highs around 54°F and lows near 43°F, with showers between the sunshine. Met Éireann’s averages make May the sunniest month of the year.
- Popular sights stay calm until June
- Many escorted tours start their season in March or April
- Our pick for first-timers who can travel in May
Summer: long days, full coaches
Highs average about 66°F. It’s the best weather of the year and the busiest stretch, with queues at the famous stops and hotel prices up.
- Book early; activities sell out
- Long evenings make the free time on tour worth more
- Peak-season departures usually carry the highest fares
Early fall: thinner crowds
Temperatures settle in the mid-50s and the summer crowds go home. Most tour programs wind down in October.
- Good value on shoulder-season departures
- Shorter days by late October
- Check that your departure isn’t the season’s last one if you want a full program
Winter: cheap, dark and damp
Intrepid calls November generally the wettest month; December is the darkest, with about 44 hours of sunshine on Met Éireann’s averages.
- Accommodation and activities cost less
- Few escorted tours run; short city-based trips do
- Pack for rain on every day of the trip
Rain gear
Met Éireann’s 1991–2020 averages put annual rainfall near 1,288 mm, with the biggest increases in the west and north. That’s where the Cliffs of Moher and the Causeway sit. Pack a real rain jacket in any month.
When the 2027 tours actually leave
Month by month, for the tours on this page that publish 2027 dates. Numbers are departures that month; rows marked “months with departures” show only which months have dates, not how many, and “first dates only” rows show the start of a season the operator hasn’t finished listing. Who runs Ireland, and what it costs per day
Your first filter is route, not brand. Decide whether the North is in, then compare the per-day price of the tours that do what you want.

2027 fares unless marked. * Reseller listing (Global Journeys) for 2027 dates; Cosmos and Collette didn’t show a 2027 fare on their own pages when we checked. † Intrepid’s own trip notes, priced for 2026 departures. Trafalgar’s $2,925 is a sale price shown against $3,250; its other 2027 dates run to about $3,895. ‡ Irish Highlights’ $1,706 is the lowest of the 2026–27 dates on Trafalgar’s own page. Globus’s $3,279 is its May 21, 2027 departure. Airfare is extra on every tour here.
From-price divided by days. Inclusions differ a lot, so read this as a starting line, not a verdict.
The cheapest tour is the one that goes furthest.
Cosmos fits Belfast, the Causeway, Derry, Moher and Kerry into 9 days, with breakfast daily and three dinners. Its optional extras, from a Guinness Storehouse evening to a jaunting car in Killarney, are where the bill grows.
Trafalgar and Globus stay south of the border on these routes. You get more nights in Kerry and Galway and fewer hours on the coach.
Trafalgar also sells an 8-day Irish Elegance (about $3,015 in a reseller listing) under its Premium tier, the line that used to be Insight Vacations.
All-in math
Your Ireland bill, tips and all
Type in the fare your quote shows. We’ve loaded Trafalgar’s 2027 Best of Ireland and the middle of its published tip ranges as a starting figure; overwrite any box.
Best of Ireland includes 9 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 4 dinners. For scale, National Geographic Journeys tells travelers to budget about $335–435 for meals not included on its 9-day Iconic Ireland. Flights, insurance and extra hotel nights are on top. On Rick Steves tours, set both tip boxes to zero: they’re in the price.

Matcher
Which Ireland tour fits you?
Four taps. We weigh your budget, the North, group size and trip length against the tours in the table above.
Match the tour to the way you travel
Price, route and group size are the matcher’s job. Your knees, your roommate and your kids are this table’s.
| If you’re | Look first at | The reason |
|---|---|---|
| New to Ireland | Trafalgar Best of Ireland, or CIE Irish Classic if you want the North | Kerry, Moher and Dublin with the driving done for you; CIE adds Belfast and the Causeway |
| On a tight budget | Cosmos Irish Discovery or Trafalgar Irish Highlights | About $175 and $244 a day; count the optional extras before you compare |
| After luxury | Tauck The Best of Ireland | Seven hotels over 13 nights, among them the Fitzwilliam in Dublin and Cashel Palace |
| Set on a small group | Intrepid (max 12), National Geographic Journeys (max 16) or a CIE “SG” date (max 26) | Intrepid covers both sides of the border; Nat Geo stays south |
| Going alone | Trafalgar if you’d like a roommate found for you; Rick Steves if you want the room to yourself | On nearly all its solo tours, Trafalgar pairs you with a same-gender roommate at the twin rate. With Rick Steves, a private room adds $840 on Best of Ireland and $420 on Heart of Ireland |
| Traveling with children | Trafalgar, Cosmos, Globus or Collette | Age 5 is the minimum at Trafalgar, Cosmos and Globus, and at Collette on most tours. Under Trafalgar’s Kids & Teens deal, travelers aged 5–17 get up to 10% off the land price; Collette lists child land rates for the same ages |
| Active | CIE Walking & Hiking: Cork to Kerry | A small-group walking program capped at 16 guests |
| Wanting an easier pace, or unsure on stairs | Tauck, or National Geographic Journeys (rated Light) | Rick Steves expects several miles on foot each day, over cobbles and up stairs, with you handling your own luggage. Need a hand? It asks you to travel with a companion who can give one |
The tour pages we compared publish activity ratings and little else on access. Before any money changes hands, ask us to check the hotels and the walking on your specific date.
Crossing into Northern Ireland: the £20 form and the rest of your papers
Most Ireland travelers find out about this one at the airport. You won’t.
Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. Since the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation became mandatory, US citizens need one to enter, and that holds when you arrive by coach from Dublin.
There are no immigration checks on the land border, so nobody stops the bus. The rule applies anyway, per the UK Home Office and Visit Belfast.
The leniency phase ended in February 2026, and airlines can refuse boarding to a UK-bound traveler without one.
| Paperwork | What the official sources say |
|---|---|
| UK ETA: who must apply | Anyone visa-free, Americans included. British and Irish citizens are the only exemptions. |
| UK ETA: cost | Up from £16 to £20 a person on April 8, 2026 |
| UK ETA: validity | Two years or until your passport expires; stays of up to six months each |
| UK ETA: children | Every traveler needs their own, kids included |
| UK ETA: where to apply | gov.uk/eta. Look-alike sites charge well above the official fee. |
| Republic of Ireland | No visa for tourist stays up to 90 days; your passport must be valid for the whole stay and have at least one page free (US State Department) |
| Northern Ireland passport | One blank page minimum, and valid until you leave (US State Department) |
| US advisory level | Ireland: “exercise normal precautions,” the lowest level. United Kingdom: issued May 8, 2025, at Level 2 (“exercise increased caution”) because of terrorism, noting isolated dissident violence in Northern Ireland |
Our rule
If your itinerary names Belfast, the Giant’s Causeway, Derry or the Antrim coast, apply for the ETA when you book, for every traveler. The Republic itself doesn’t require it.
Getting there, the time zone, two currencies and a cruise add-on
You can book the tour in an afternoon. The flights deserve more thought, because they set up day one and the final morning.
Most of these tours start and end in Dublin, so a round trip there is the easy booking. Some don’t.
Rick Steves Heart of Ireland starts in Ennis, near Shannon Airport. Intrepid starts in Belfast. Rick Steves Best of Ireland ends in Belfast. Book those open-jaw: into one airport, home from the other.
Flying home from Dublin or Shannon has a perk. They’re the only airports in Europe with US Preclearance, per Aer Lingus, so on most flights you clear US immigration before you board and walk off like a domestic passenger.
Land a day before the tour begins. A red-eye followed by a welcome dinner makes for a very long first day, and a late flight shouldn’t cost you the first stop.
The time zone. Both sides of the border keep UK time; for most of the year, that puts you five hours ahead of New York.
Cash and cards. Euros in the Republic, pounds in the North. Most shops and fuel stations take cards, per Tourism Ireland; keep a little of each currency for a pub or a tip.
Adding a cruise. British Isles cruises often call at Dublin, Cobh (for Cork) and Belfast. Our Dublin, Cobh and Belfast port guides and our Northern Europe cruise guide show how to fit a sailing and a tour into one trip.
Driving on the left, or letting the coach do it
The cost gap is real. So is the moment you meet a tour bus on a single-track road while sitting on the wrong side of the car.
Ireland’s roads run from motorways to winding country lanes, per Tourism Ireland, and you’re in the left lane on all of them. You need a full licence or an international driving permit, and the insurance has to be in your name.
A middle path: take the tour for the circuit, then add two or three self-drive days at the end, once you’ve watched the roads from a coach window. Our self-guided tours guide covers the trade-offs.
How many days Ireland takes
The island is small; the roads are slow. That’s why the same four headline sights fill anywhere from 7 to 14 days.
The southern loop
Dublin, Kerry and Moher at a run. CIE’s Taste of Ireland (5 to 7 days, from $1,845 on CIE’s US site, year not shown), Rick Steves Heart of Ireland and Trafalgar Irish Highlights live here.
South at ease, or north and south fast
Trafalgar and Globus spend ten days in the Republic. Cosmos and Intrepid use nine to cover both sides of the border.
The whole island
CIE’s Irish Classic and Collette’s Shades of Ireland include Belfast, the Causeway, Kerry and Moher.
The whole island, slowly
Tauck uses seven hotels across 13 nights; Rick Steves Best of Ireland gives Dingle three.
Book a night before the tour, and consider one after. No fare on this page includes them, so price those hotels with the tour.
Tipping and the costs that hide off the brochure
Tips are the line item most first-timers forget. On a ten-day Trafalgar tour, its own guidance adds up to roughly $80–$120 per person.
| Operator | Guide / director | Driver | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| CIE Tours | €10/day (Driver/Guide, one-person crew); €7 Tour Director on two-person crews | €7/day on two-person crews | Small-group rates €13 and €8; city guides €2 |
| Trafalgar | $5–7/day | $3–5/day | Hotel and dining-room tips included |
| National Geographic Journeys | €8–10/day (Expedition Leader) | — | Local guides €3–5/day; wait staff about 10% |
| Rick Steves | Included | Included | Guides are salaried; tips aren’t expected |
| Globus, Cosmos | Neither publishes a daily amount | Not published | Ask your Tour Director on day one, at the welcome meeting |
Off the coach, restaurant tipping runs a little lower than at home. An Irish tour operator, Vagabond, calls 10–15% normal in restaurants, cafes and pub dining rooms; you don’t tip per drink at the bar, and groups of six or eight often get a service charge added, in which case you skip the tip.
The other costs that catch people: optional excursions, lunches, the ETA for the North, and hotel nights before and after the tour. Airport transfers vary; Trafalgar’s Best of Ireland includes the arrival transfer, so ask whether yours does.
Our land-tour tipping guide compares every operator’s numbers side by side.
CIE Tours: the specialist most Americans haven’t heard of
Every big operator runs Ireland. One was built there.
CIE Tours began in 1932 as a small touring division of the Great Southern Railways. Its parent became Córas Iompair Éireann, Ireland’s transport company, in 1945.
It still belongs to CIÉ, which is owned by the Irish state: a 2016 parliamentary answer calls CIE Tours International a wholly owned subsidiary, incorporated in the US, and trade press around 2024 still described it as government-owned. Day to day it runs from Morristown, New Jersey.
It has taken more than three million travelers, per its USTOA profile, and it’s still Ireland-first, with Britain, Italy, Iceland, Spain and Portugal added.
Standard tours carry about 35 guests on coaches that seat up to 44. Small Group departures, marked “SG” on the calendar, cap at 26 on a full-size coach, so you get room to spread out.
Its pitch is inclusion. Irish Classic lists 19 meals over 12 days, every attraction entry on the itinerary, an Irish entertainment evening and coach Wi-Fi, from $4,195 for 2027.
CIE Tours, sample fares
From CIE’s own pages and trade press. Irish Legends stays in the Republic.
What to settle before the deposit goes in
Holding a seat costs roughly $200 to $400 each. The fares look alike; the refund rules don’t.
| Who | To hold your seat | Balance due | The fine print |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rick Steves | $400 a person, with a full refund for 30 days | 60 days out | The deposit locks in your price |
| Globus and Cosmos | $250 a person, not refundable | 60 days out on most trips | Terms updated September 8, 2026 |
| Trafalgar | From $200 a person | 90 days out on most departures from summer 2026 | Taken from a reseller’s summary of Trafalgar’s terms; check it against your quote |
Summer and small-group departures go first. When to commit is in our booking-window guide; the insurance timing guide covers why cover should follow the deposit closely.
Check off as you go
Should you book an Ireland tour?
Book it if
- This is your first time in Ireland, and you’d like the big four sights with someone else driving on the left
- One booking should cover the Republic and Northern Ireland (Cosmos, CIE, Collette, Rick Steves Best of Ireland, Intrepid, Tauck)
- You’re going alone but would like company; on nearly all its tours, Trafalgar will find you a same-gender roommate
- You’d rather go with a specialist; CIE has been running Ireland since 1932
Look elsewhere if
- You’d rather spend a week in one village; a rental cottage or a self-guided trip suits that better
- The North is a must, yet your route stays in the Republic; read the itinerary first
- Sharing a coach with 45 people sounds like a long week; try Intrepid (max 12), Nat Geo Journeys (max 16) or a CIE SG date
- Your dates fall in winter, when few escorted tours run
Our take
Ireland rewards a tour more than most places, because the driving is the hardest part and a tour removes it.
Start with the North.
If the Causeway matters, Cosmos is the budget answer, Rick Steves the unhurried one and CIE’s Irish Classic the specialist’s. If it doesn’t, Trafalgar and Globus give you ten easy days in the south.
Then pick the group size you can live with, and file the ETA the day you book.

What Ireland first-timers ask us
Do I need a UK ETA for an Ireland tour?
Only if the tour enters Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK. US citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation for the UK, including when they cross the open land border from the Republic. It costs £20 per person, children included, and lasts two years or until your passport expires. Apply on gov.uk/eta. The Republic itself needs only a passport valid for your stay.
Do Rick Steves Ireland tours go to Northern Ireland?
The 14-day Best of Ireland does: Derry, a night on the Antrim Coast, the Giant’s Causeway and two nights in Belfast, where the tour ends. The 7-day Heart of Ireland doesn’t; it runs from Ennis to Dublin inside the Republic.
How many days do you need for an Ireland tour?
About a week covers a southern loop with the Ring of Kerry and the Cliffs of Moher. Nine days is the shortest we found that also reaches Belfast and the Giant’s Causeway (Cosmos Irish Discovery and Intrepid Northern & Southern Ireland). Twelve to fourteen days covers the whole island at a gentler pace.
What is the cheapest guided tour of Ireland?
Of the tours we compared, Cosmos Irish Discovery: 9 days from about $1,574 on 2027 dates in a reseller listing, roughly $175 a day. On Trafalgar’s own site, Irish Highlights runs 7 days from about $1,706 (its lowest 2026–27 date) and Best of Ireland 10 days from about $2,925 on 2027 sale dates. Flights are extra on all of them.
What is the best month to tour Ireland?
For weather, late spring through summer. Met Éireann’s averages make May the sunniest month, and summer brings 16 to 18 hours of daylight along with the biggest crowds and highest prices. September and October are quieter. Most escorted tours run from about March or April to October.
Who owns CIE Tours?
CIE Tours International is a subsidiary of Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ), Ireland’s state-owned transport company, according to a 2016 answer in the Irish parliament. It started in 1932 as the touring arm of the Great Southern Railways and is run from offices in Morristown, New Jersey.
How much should I tip on an Ireland tour?
It depends on the operator. CIE suggests €10 per person per day for a Driver/Guide; Trafalgar suggests its Travel Director gets $5–7 a day and the driver $3–5; at Rick Steves, every guide and driver tip is built into the fare. In restaurants, 10–15% is normal unless a service charge is already on the bill.
Is it better to self-drive or take a tour in Ireland?
You drive on the left everywhere on the island, with speed limits in km/h in the Republic and mph in Northern Ireland. A coach tour removes the driving, the tolls and the parking. A self-drive costs less per day but makes every winding road your job.
