What the land half adds to an Alaska week
You’re pricing a cruise and a land tour at the same time. Start with what the land days change.
- VancouverDay 1, sails 4:00pmIsland Princess heads north up the Inside Passage, with a sea day to settle in.
- Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway3 port daysThree ports on three straight days, May 28 to 30.
- Hubbard Glacier & College Fjordscenic cruisingTwo afternoons of glacier cruising before the ship docks.
- Whittierarrives 12:30amOff the ship and onto Princess’s Direct-to-the-Wilderness railcar for Denali.
- Denali1 nightDenali Princess Wilderness Lodge, then the Natural History Tour by bus.
- Mt. McKinley Princess lodge1 nightA free morning with the 20,310-foot mountain in view from most of the property, weather allowing.
- Anchorage1 nightHotel Captain Cook. The tour ends the next morning; fly home from Anchorage.
Ports, times and hotels from a reseller’s itinerary listing for this departure, read October 26, 2026. From $1,324 per person inside, taxes included.
Northbound or southbound: which half comes first
Most cruisetours run in both directions across the season. The direction doesn’t change the price much; it changes how the trip feels at each end.
Both directions need an open-jaw ticket: into one city, home from the other. On airline sites, search multi-city, not round trip.
One timing detail that surprises people
On the Princess and Holland America itineraries we read, the ship reaches Whittier around 12:30 to 1:00 in the morning. Northbound, your land tour starts that same day. Plan an early night before.
Who runs Alaska cruisetours, and how they differ
Two cruise lines own their Alaska lodges. Everyone else uses partner hotels. Tap through the six operators we checked.
Princess Cruises
The largest program: 28 cruisetour itineraries for 2027 across eight ships. Princess owns Denali, Mt. McKinley, Copper River, Kenai and Fairbanks lodges and runs Direct-to-the-Wilderness rail from the ship to Denali the same day.
- Denali Essentials (10–12 nights): rail and hotels, no pre-scheduled tours
- Denali Explorer (10–15): adds the Denali Natural History Tour and, where routed, Fairbanks riverboat and Gold Dredge 8
- Denali Escorted (12–17): tour director, Tundra Wilderness Tour and most land meals
Holland America Line
The Yukon specialist. Holland America runs its own Denali Lodge, where a multi-year, $70 million upgrade is due to finish before the 2027 season, including two new buildings with 72 more rooms. Every cruisetour rides its two-level McKinley Explorer domes.
- Classic (9–10 days, one Denali night) and Signature (10–12 days, two or three)
- Ultimate (14 days) and Alaska, Denali & Yukon (9–17 days) come with a tour director
- It calls itself the only cruise line with escorted tours and overnights in the Yukon
Royal Caribbean
A seven-night cruise on Anthem of the Seas, from Vancouver or Seward, plus two to six land nights. Lodging includes Denali Park Village, Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge and Alyeska Resort.
- Many tours ride the glass-domed Wilderness Express
- Local Adventure Guides; a motorcoach driver moves your bags
- Some meals are included, depending on the tour and lodge
Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Solstice sails Vancouver to Seward, then a tour director takes over on land. The short Denali Express is the cheapest way we found to add Denali to a Celebrity week.
- Denali Express (9 nights): one Denali night, one Anchorage night
- Great Frontier Expedition (13 nights): Talkeetna, two Denali nights and Fairbanks
- Meals on land aren’t included unless the itinerary says so
Tauck (land-first escorted)
A Tauck Director from Vancouver to Vancouver: Dawson City, two nights at Holland America’s Denali Lodge, Alyeska, then a seven-night Holland America cruise.
- Floatplane flightseeing, the Tundra Wilderness Tour and the White Pass & Yukon Route rail included
- Tauck rates it Activity 2, Pace 2
- Tauck Bridges also runs an 8-day family Alaska trip on land only, from $7,790
Collette (escorted coach + cruise)
An escorted land tour from Fairbanks through Denali and Talkeetna, then a week at sea to Vancouver. The 2027 departure we read included 28 meals.
- About 37 travelers on average, 44 at most, on that departure
- That group departure sailed on Holland America; Collette’s own page now lists Princess, so confirm the ship
- Collette doesn’t include the tour manager’s or driver’s tips
The 2027 Globus and Cosmos Alaska trips we found pair the cruise with the Canadian Rockies rather than Denali. They’re on our Canadian Rockies page.
Seven 2027 cruisetours, land nights first
Same Alaska, very different trips. Compare the land nights before the price; that’s where these tours split.
| Tour (2027) | Days | Land nights | Denali | Rail | From, inside |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Princess Denali Explorer AA3, Vancouver → Anchorage | 11 | 3 | 1 night, Natural History Tour | Princess dome, Whittier–Denali | $1,324 |
| Princess Denali Explorer MA6, Vancouver → Fairbanks | 14 | 6 | 2 nights, Natural History Tour | Princess dome, Talkeetna–Denali | $2,554 |
| Celebrity Denali Express, Vancouver → Anchorage | 10 | 2 | 1 night, Natural History Tour | Wilderness Express, Talkeetna–Anchorage | $2,127 |
| Holland America Signature Denali D0C, Vancouver → Fairbanks | 11 | 3 | 2 nights at Denali Lodge | McKinley Explorer | $3,094 |
| Celebrity Great Frontier Expedition, Vancouver → Fairbanks | 14 | 6 | 2 nights, Tundra Wilderness Tour | Grandview and Wilderness Express | $3,896 |
| Holland America Denali & Yukon Y3L, Anchorage → Vancouver | 15 | 10 | Denali, then Dawson City and Whitehorse | McKinley Explorer | $4,169 |
| Tauck Alaska and the Yukon, Vancouver round trip | 15 | 7 | 2 nights, Tundra Wilderness Tour | White Pass & Yukon Route | $9,990 |
Prices are per person, sharing, from US reseller listings read in late October 2026 (taxes included) and Tauck’s own page. They move week to week. Royal Caribbean wasn’t showing 2027 prices, so it isn’t in this table.
Denali in 2027: the road is coming back
Denali is why most people buy the land half. The road changed in September 2026; your included tour may not have.
Since 2021, buses have stopped at East Fork, around mile 43 of the 92-mile park road, because a landslide at Pretty Rocks cut it. The National Park Service opened a new 475-foot bridge over the slide on September 2, 2026.
The park expects full bus service along the road to resume for 2027. Buses to Kantishna, at the far end, are expected from June 8, in phases. The Eielson Visitor Center stays closed in 2027.
The catch for cruisetour guests: your included tour is a Natural History Tour or a Tundra Wilderness Tour, and no line we read has said how far those will go in 2027.
Ask this before you book
How far into the park does the included Denali tour go on my date? If you want the deep road, ask for two Denali nights and a free day to book the park’s own bus.
A day on this tour: Princess AA3, days 8 and 9
Docked in Whittier
The ship arrives in the small hours of day 8, and you step off to a waiting railcar.
Rail to Denali
Princess’s Direct-to-the-Wilderness train runs from the pier to the Denali area, and you sleep at Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge.
Natural History Tour
A bus tour into the park, looking for the mountain and the “Big Five”: moose, bears, caribou, Dall sheep and wolves.
Coach to Mt. McKinley Princess lodge
A motorcoach south to the second lodge, with the mountain in view from much of the grounds if the clouds lift.
Glass domes or a coach seat
Some short tours ride the dome car only once. Read the itinerary line by line.
| Item | Princess rail | McKinley Explorer | Wilderness Express | Coach only |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who uses it | Princess | Holland America (every cruisetour) | Royal Caribbean, Celebrity (many tours) | Short legs on every line |
| The pitch | Ship to Denali-area lodge in one day | Two-level domes with an open-air platform | Glass dome, 360-degree views | Covers the legs with no rail |
| Typical leg | Whittier or Talkeetna to Denali | Anchorage–Denali | Fairbanks, Denali, Talkeetna, Anchorage | Seward–Anchorage, Denali–Talkeetna |
| Lunch aboard | Ask | In the 2027 dining package | Ask | No |
Every line puts you on a coach for part of the trip, so count the rail legs on your itinerary.
On the Celebrity Denali Express, for example, the only rail is Talkeetna to Anchorage; the Seward and Denali legs are by coach. On its 13-night tour, rail covers nearly every leg.
May prices, June buses, a short September
The cruisetour season is shorter than the cruise season. These are the operators’ dates; we don’t publish weather averages we can’t source.
May: the cheap end
Princess cruisetours start May 8 in 2027 and Holland America’s from May. Celebrity warns its May and September Denali tours depend on the weather and may swap the Tundra Wilderness Tour for the Natural History Tour.
- Our lowest 2027 listing, Princess AA3 from $1,324, departs May 26
- Kantishna buses aren’t expected until June 8
- Good for price, if you can live with a possible Denali tour swap
June: the road opens up
From June 8 the park expects buses to the far end of the Denali road again, in phases. All the lines we checked run June departures.
- Our Holland America Denali & Yukon and Signature examples depart May 29 and June 6
- Book early: the lowest-priced options tend to sell out first, The Points Guy notes
- A strong month if Denali is the point of the trip
July and August: peak
One Princess 10-night Denali Explorer listed for 2028 shows the pattern: $2,384 in late May, rising to $3,024–$3,124 from July to mid-August.
- The Celebrity and Royal Caribbean tours we read depart through August
- If July or August is your only window, book early
September: the short tail
Princess runs cruisetours to September 8 in 2027, and Holland America says its season runs into September. Prices on that 2028 Princess tour ease to $2,874 by September 10.
- Same weather caveat on the Denali tour as May
- A shorter list of departures to pick from
- Good if a lower fare matters more than the date
A reseller’s lowest listed price for each 2028 date, taxes included. 2027 dates on the same page showed “contact us,” so we used the next year to show the shape.
The fare, the day rate and what’s left out
The cheapest daily rate isn’t the cheapest trip. Price what’s missing, not just what’s listed.
Listing prices from late October 2026; balcony cabins on the same tours ran roughly $380 to $1,400 more per person.
Price-per-day math
Line up two cruisetours on the same scale
We filled in two real 2027 examples. Swap in the tours on your shortlist; count days, not nights.
Inside-cabin from-prices, per person, sharing. The Princess and Holland America figures include taxes; Tauck’s includes a Tauck Director and most sightseeing. Flights are never in these numbers.
A cheap cruisetour per day usually means a cheap cabin on a long sea week, with land meals, tips and optional tours left to you. Tauck’s number is higher because it folds most of that in.
Add the missing pieces before you compare. Meals ashore come first: Holland America values its 2027 land dining package at up to $829 a person, which gives you a sense of scale.
Then tips for land guides and drivers, any flightseeing you’ll actually book, and two flights. On an open-jaw trip from Florida or Texas, the flights are often the biggest add-on.
Hotels and rails are in. Meals mostly aren’t.
Hotels and transport are always in. Meals and a tour director are where the lines split.

Holland America’s 2027 dining package covers breakfast and dinner at its Denali, Skagway and Dawson City properties and lunch on the McKinley Explorer, valued at up to $829. It’s free with the Have It All early booking bonus, for a limited time.
Two Denali nights, then decide
More land nights cost more, and they’re the reason to buy a cruisetour at all. Start with two Denali nights.
Two land nights buys one look at Denali and a train ride. It’s a taster, not a visit.
Three or four is the sweet spot for a first trip. You get two Denali nights, so a weather-blown morning doesn’t cost you the mountain, plus Talkeetna or Fairbanks.
Five to seven is for people who want a second Alaska: Copper River and Wrangell-St. Elias on Princess, the Kenai Peninsula or Homer on Royal Caribbean, or Dawson City and Whitehorse on Holland America.
Matcher
Which Alaska cruisetour fits you?
Four taps. We rank ten real 2027 tours on style, length, pace and budget.
Flying in and out from Texas and Florida
Alaska is a long way from Orlando or Houston. The open-jaw ticket is the part to get right.
Your flights depend on direction. Northbound, you fly into Vancouver and home from Anchorage or Fairbanks. Southbound, it’s the other way round.
Texas has it easier. Dallas/Fort Worth has an American nonstop to Anchorage, and Houston Bush gets a United summer nonstop from May 27, 2027. Both fly nonstop to Vancouver.
No Florida airport flies nonstop to Anchorage, so Florida travelers connect, often in Seattle. Fairbanks is a connection from both states.
Our Florida and Texas flight guide has every route, airport by airport. For the cruise half, start with our Alaska cruise guide.
Flying home from Fairbanks
Some tours that end in Fairbanks finish with an airport transfer on the last morning. Don’t book the first flight out; check the tour’s end time before you buy.
Passports, clocks, money and who it suits
Half the trip may be in Canada even if you never think of it that way. Check these before you book flights.
Families have a land-only option too: Tauck Bridges runs an 8-day Alaska trip for families, Call of the Wild, from $7,790 for 2027 on a reseller listing, with no cruise attached.
Arrive in Vancouver a day early on a northbound trip; a delayed flight can’t make the ship wait. Then read our booking-window and insurance guide before you pay a deposit, since Holland America’s own advice is to book cruisetours early, and The Points Guy notes the lowest-priced options tend to sell out first.
Tips, bags and the booking checklist
Most surprises on a cruisetour are about what the fare leaves out, not what goes wrong. Work through this list.
None of the cruise-line land inclusions we read mention tips for land guides or drivers, and none publishes a figure. Collette says its tour manager’s and driver’s tips are extra. As a yardstick, Trafalgar suggests $5–7 a day for a tour director and $3–5 for a driver on its own tours, and restaurants in North America expect about 15–20%.
You move every one or two nights on most of the tours we read, so pack one small bag for the land nights.
Optional tours, from flightseeing to rafting, are extra on every cruise-line tour we read. Book the one you care about before you go.
Before you book
Who a cruisetour fits, and who should skip it
Book it if
- Denali is on your list and you want the logistics handled
- You want the cruise and the interior on one booking, with the transfers in between
- You’re flying from Texas and can use the Anchorage or Vancouver nonstops
- You want the Yukon; Holland America and Tauck are the cruise-linked ways in
- You’d rather ride a dome car than drive yourself
Look elsewhere if
- You only have a week; a round-trip cruise from Seattle is simpler
- You want to drive the Kenai and Denali on your own schedule: see our rental-car guide
- You hate early mornings and moving every night or two
- You expect meals to be included on land; on most tours they aren’t
- You want the deep Denali road on an included tour; that isn’t confirmed for 2027 yet
Our take
A cruisetour is the easiest way to see interior Alaska, and Princess and Holland America are the two lines that own the lodges they stay in. That matters more than which ship you sail.
Pick the land nights first: at least two in Denali. Then pick the direction that suits your flights. Then compare cabins.
If you want someone to handle everything, price Tauck or Princess Escorted against a Princess Explorer plus meals and tips. Then decide whether the gap is worth it to you.

What Alaska cruisetour shoppers ask us
What is an Alaska cruisetour?
A one-way Alaska cruise, usually seven nights between Vancouver and Whittier or Seward, sold as one package with two to ten nights on land in places like Denali, Talkeetna, Fairbanks or the Yukon. Hotels, the rail and coach legs and some sightseeing are included; most meals on land usually aren’t.
Do I need a passport for an Alaska cruisetour?
Bring a US passport book. Most cruisetours start or end in Vancouver, so you fly between Canada and the US, and the State Department says flying into the US from Canada takes a passport book or another approved ID. A passport card works for a land or sea entry into Canada, not for that flight.
How many land days do I need?
Two land nights gets you one look at Denali. Three or four adds a second Denali night or Talkeetna or Fairbanks, and is the sweet spot for most first trips. Five to seven adds the Kenai Peninsula, Copper River or the Yukon.
Is the Denali Park Road open in 2027?
The Pretty Rocks Bridge at mile 45 opened on September 2, 2026, and the park expects full bus service to resume in 2027, with buses to Kantishna expected from June 8. The Eielson Visitor Center stays closed in 2027. Ask your line how far its included Denali tour goes; we haven’t seen one announce a longer route yet.
Which cruise line has the best Alaska cruisetours?
Princess and Holland America own the biggest land operations: Princess runs five of its own lodges and its own rail service, and Holland America runs its own Denali Lodge and is the only cruise line offering escorted Yukon overnights. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity sell shorter, simpler programs. Tauck and Collette sell escorted versions with a cruise inside.
What does an Alaska cruisetour cost?
On late-October 2026 listings for 2027, inside-cabin cruisetours ran from about $1,324 for 10 nights on Princess to about $4,169 for 14 nights on Holland America’s Denali and Yukon tour, taxes included. Tauck’s 15-day Alaska and the Yukon starts at $9,990. Flights are extra.
Are meals included on the land part?
Mostly not. Princess Essentials and Explorer tours and the Royal Caribbean and Celebrity tours we checked include few land meals, or none. Princess Escorted includes most of them, and Holland America’s 2027 dining package is free with its Have It All early booking bonus for a limited time.
Can I fly nonstop from Texas or Florida?
From Texas, yes: Dallas/Fort Worth has an American nonstop to Anchorage, and Houston Bush gets a United summer nonstop from May 27, 2027. No Florida airport flies nonstop to Anchorage, so Florida travelers connect, often in Seattle.
