The markets open in waves. Time your tour to them.

Vienna opens in mid-November, Nuremberg the Friday before Advent, Prague a day later. We lined up the official 2026 dates against real coach tours and river sailings so your trip lands when the stalls are lit.

The Thanksgiving catch

Thanksgiving falls on November 26, 2026. Nuremberg opens the next day and Prague the day after, so a tour that reaches either city in Thanksgiving week may arrive before the stalls do. Check the day your tour is in each city against this table.

You’re choosing between more markets and fewer suitcases. The cheapest per day isn’t always the cheapest trip.

The map decides most of this. Salzburg, Munich, Innsbruck and Lucerne aren’t on a cruising river, so if those are the markets you want, take a coach.

If Vienna, Nuremberg and the Danube towns are the list, a ship is the easier week.

Price the meals before you compare fares. Trafalgar’s river week includes 20 meals with wine and beer at lunch and dinner; its coach week includes 11.

Read our river cruise guide to compare lines, then the Danube and Rhine river guides for the ports.

Coach tours that chase the markets

Coach tours cover the most markets in a week. Here are the real ones on sale for 2026 and 2027.

“Reseller” means the agency Global Journeys, used where the operator’s own US page didn’t show a price. Insight Vacations becomes Trafalgar’s Premium tier from the 2027 season.

Trafalgar runs the most market tours we found. Beyond the 8-day Austria, Germany and Switzerland tour, it lists German Christmas Markets (8 days, Frankfurt to Berlin) and a new Alpine Christmas Markets for November and December 2027 (9 days, Munich to Zürich); ask us for US prices on those two.

Collette adds Christmas Markets & Castles of Europe for its 2027–28 season, and its European Christmas Markets runs Prague to Budapest.

Globus’s market tour in the listings we checked was in the Baltics, not Central Europe. We didn’t find a Cosmos or Rick Steves market tour; Rick Steves’ nearest holiday option is Christmas in Rome, December 20 to 26, 2027, at $3,095 plus air.

Under 35? Contiki sells a 7-day German Christmas Markets tour, Frankfurt to Munich, from about $1,381 for December 2026 on the same reseller listing.

River sailings timed to the markets

What the fare covers

Tauck includes all excursions, drinks all day and gratuities on its river cruises. AmaWaterways includes wine and beer with meals, Wi-Fi and its excursions, and charges a 50% single supplement on most cabins.

Viking includes one excursion per port, Wi-Fi and beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner.

Trafalgar’s river week adds a welcome and a farewell reception with sparkling wine and sells a Prague extension.

Dates and direction

Trafalgar listed its Budapest-to-Passau sailings at $4,849 for November 25, 2026, $4,349 for December 9, 2026, $3,749 for December 1, 2027 and $2,599 for December 15, 2027.

AmaWaterways’ 2026 sailings depart between November 23 and December 13, in both directions. Its 2027 season had already closed when we checked.

Port charges: AmaWaterways builds in $250 a person in 2026 and $280 in 2027.

Read the lines side by side: Viking, Avalon, AmaWaterways, Uniworld and Tauck. Ports: Nuremberg, Passau, Vienna, Budapest.

A day on a market tour: Vienna to Munich via Salzburg

You’ve seen the dates. This is how a real tour day uses them.

Morning

Leave Vienna by coach

Day 3 of Trafalgar’s Christmas Markets of Austria, Germany and Switzerland, after a full day of Vienna’s markets.

Midday

Salzburg

A stop in Mozart’s city, with his birthplace among the tour’s listed sights. Salzburg’s cathedral-square market runs from November 19 in 2026.

Evening

Into Munich

Two nights here, with the next day given to the markets around Marienplatz.

Trafalgar’s week has three days with a stop on the road.

That suits the season. The stalls glow after dark, so a drive by day costs you little.

The walking is short but cold. You stand at stalls, walk old-town cobbles, and stay out after sunset.

Trafalgar labels this tour “Balanced.” Bags are handled, and the coach has Wi-Fi in most countries.

On the river, AmaWaterways offers gentle, regular and active groups each day; ask which ones run in December.

07

Thanksgiving week sells first: when to book

You may be planning around a holiday you can’t move. So is everyone else.

American travelers take Thanksgiving week off, and market tours fill around it.

On October 26, 2026, Trafalgar’s 8-day market tour showed November 26 and November 29 sold out. Most other dates from November 24 to December 4 were still open, and December 3 carried a 15% last-minute deal.

The pattern is worth planning around. If you need Thanksgiving week, book it as soon as the dates are out; for 2027, Thanksgiving is November 25.

Early December can be the value play. Trafalgar’s 2027 river sailing on December 15 was listed at $2,599, against $3,749 for December 1.

Booking windows

Trafalgar advertises deposits from $200 on this tour and free booking changes. Deposit and cancellation terms differ by company; each operator’s guide covers them.

Our booking-window guide compares deadlines, and our insurance purchase-window guide explains why to insure soon after the deposit.

Winter flights matter too. Fly in a day early; a delayed connection costs a hotel night, not the first market evening.

Price comparison

Line up a coach tour against a river cruise

Divide each fare by its days. We filled in three real market trips; change any of them to your own quotes.

Starting figures: Trafalgar’s lowest 2026 list fare, and the Viking and Tauck from-prices on a reseller listing. A river fare includes most meals; a coach fare doesn’t.

All-in math

What a coach market tour costs once you land

We filled in Trafalgar’s 8-day tour and the midpoints of its tip guidance. The meals figure is our starting estimate; change it.

The tour includes 7 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 3 dinners, so about 10 lunches and dinners are yours. Trafalgar lists 24 optional experiences on this tour; add the ones you’d book. Then add flights: it starts in Vienna and ends in Zürich.

09

Coach or river? Let the matcher pick

The right trip depends on which markets you picture and how much you hate repacking. Answer honestly.

Matcher

Match a real market trip to how you travel

Five taps: packing, markets, budget, meals and the cold. It suggests trips from the tables above.

How do you feel about packing up every day or two?
Which markets matter most?
Budget per person, per day?
Dinners: included or on your own?
Evenings on your feet in the cold?
10

Packing for cold evenings at the stalls

Market evenings are long and outdoors. Your feet will decide how many you enjoy.

You’ll spend the best hours outdoors after dark. Pack for standing still in the cold, not for a brisk walk.

Trafalgar’s own advice: a waterproof jacket for Europe’s changeable weather, and waterproof or warm boots in place of sandals in winter. It says three pairs of shoes is enough for most tours.

Keep to one main bag. Trafalgar allows one suitcase of up to 23 kg (50 lb) and a small hand bag that fits under the coach seat; Globus and Cosmos allow 50 lb.

Bulky coats eat that allowance. Wear the heaviest layer on the plane.

Our land tour packing list has the full list and a bag-check tool.

Before you book a market tour

These are the questions that change the trip. Tick them off as you go.

Your market-trip checklist

Ticks aren’t saved.

14

Who a market tour suits, and who should skip it

Book a market tour if

  • You want several markets in a week without planning trains in winter
  • You’re happy in the cold after dark with a mug of something warm
  • You’d rather unpack once; a river sailing docks near the Danube markets
  • Thanksgiving or early December is when you can travel

Look elsewhere if

  • You want long, sunny days; this is the wrong season
  • You only want one city; a hotel in Vienna or Prague for a week is simpler, and both markets run for weeks
  • Crowds wear you out; a Christmas market is a crowd by design
  • Your heart is set on Strasbourg or Budapest for a set date; confirm their 2026 dates first

Our take

For a first market trip, sail the Danube between Nuremberg and Vienna. You get two of the great markets and the river towns between, with meals aboard, from about $2,947 on Avalon.

If Salzburg and Munich are the pictures in your head, take Trafalgar’s coach week instead and book December, not Thanksgiving.

Either way, match the tour’s city days to the market dates before you pay the deposit.

16

What market travelers ask us

When do the Christmas markets open in 2026?

From the official tourism sites: Vienna’s Rathausplatz market November 13 to December 26; Cologne’s cathedral market November 16 to December 23; Salzburg November 19 to January 1; Nuremberg November 27 to December 24; Prague’s Old Town and Wenceslas Square markets November 28 to January 6. Strasbourg and Budapest hadn’t posted official 2026 dates on the pages we checked.

Are 2027 Christmas market dates published yet?

Only Nuremberg’s, of the big markets we checked: November 26 to December 24, 2027. Both years, Nuremberg opens on the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent; the others post their dates nearer the season.

Is a river cruise or a coach tour better for Christmas markets?

A river cruise unpacks you once and docks near the markets in Vienna, Passau, Nuremberg or Budapest, with most meals included. A coach tour reaches places off the river, like Munich, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Lucerne on Trafalgar’s 8-day tour, but includes fewer meals. Per day, the cheapest river sailings we found were close to coach prices.

Do Christmas market tours sell out around Thanksgiving?

Yes. On October 26, 2026, Trafalgar’s Christmas Markets of Austria, Germany and Switzerland showed its November 26 (Thanksgiving) and November 29 departures sold out, while other late-November and December dates were still open. Book Thanksgiving week as early as you can.

How much does a Christmas market tour cost?

Coach tours we found ran from about $1,449 for Globus’s 7-day Baltic Christmas Markets Escape to $3,650 for Trafalgar’s priciest 2026 date; Contiki’s 18-to-35 week started near $1,381. River sailings started at $2,599 for Trafalgar’s December 15, 2027 Danube sailing and reached about $5,149 for AmaWaterways. Several are reseller prices; ask us for your date.

What should I pack for a Christmas market tour?

Trafalgar advises swapping sandals for waterproof or warm boots in winter and packing a waterproof jacket. Bring layers, gloves and a hat for evenings outdoors. Trafalgar allows one suitcase of up to 23 kg (50 lb); Globus and Cosmos allow 50 lb.

Is it safe to visit Christmas markets in Germany?

The State Department rates Germany Level 2, exercise increased caution, for terrorism, and its advisory names markets and holiday events among possible targets. Austria, Czechia and Hungary are Level 1. Stay alert in crowds and enroll in STEP before you go.

Which markets close on Christmas Eve?

Nuremberg closes December 24, at 2 p.m. Cologne’s cathedral market ends December 23. Vienna’s Rathausplatz runs to December 26, Salzburg to January 1, and Prague’s main markets to January 6. Want a market after Christmas? Pick Prague or Salzburg.
