Kenya by ticket, month and travel authorization
You’re planning a safari where the ticket price doubles mid-year and many of the camps sit outside the reserve, in conservancies. Keep both in mind as you follow one real 2027 itinerary.
- Arusha, Tanzania1 nightThe trip opens at the Gran Meliá Arusha.
- Ngorongoro2 nightsNgorongoro Lodge, Meliá Collection, inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
- Serengeti3 nightsFour Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, with daily game drives (some dates use Serengeti Explorer by Elewana).
- Samburu National Reserve2 nightsSoroi Samburu Lodge in Kenya’s dry north, after an in-tour flight.
- Mount Kenya2 nightsFairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club at Nanyuki, with a visit to the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy.
- Masai Mara2 nightsSoroi Mara Bush Camp in the reserve, and a dawn balloon flight with a champagne breakfast in the bush.
From $17,490 per person including on-tour flights, on Tauck’s page with 2027 departures (January–February and May–December). Groups up to 30, in six-passenger open-top vehicles.
The Masai Mara: reserve or conservancy
The same animals cross the same river. What changes is how many vehicles watch with you and what you can do after dark.
If the crossings are the point, they happen in the reserve. If quiet matters more to you, the conservancies are where you’ll find it.
You don’t have to pick only one. Stay in a conservancy, drive into the reserve on crossing days, and pay the ticket only on the days you use it.
Ask any camp three things: how many vehicles are allowed at a sighting, whether night drives and walks are included, and whether reserve tickets are in your rate. Rules on driving off the track differ by area, and the sources we trust don’t publish them in one place.
Beyond the Mara: Amboseli, Samburu, Laikipia and Nairobi
The Mara gets the headlines, but the Kenya trips we checked spend more nights elsewhere. Tap an area to see what it’s for and what it costs.
Amboseli National Park
Kenya’s south, facing Kilimanjaro across the Tanzanian border. A&K’s 12-day Kenya and Tanzania trip starts here.
- Child (5 to under 18) $45; age 5 and under free
- Run by the Kenya Wildlife Service, unlike the Mara
- A natural first or last stop for a Kenya-and-Tanzania trip
Samburu National Reserve
Kenya’s dry north. Intrepid gives it a full-day 4WD safari and goes looking for the “Samburu Special Five.”
- Run by Samburu County, not KWS; one guide lists about $70–$80 a day, so ask for the current rate
- Tauck sleeps two nights at Soroi Samburu Lodge
- Tauck and Intrepid both continue to Mount Kenya or Ol Pejeta
Laikipia and Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Conservancy country near Mount Kenya. Ol Pejeta publishes its own tariff, including activities a 6-to-6 reserve ticket can’t offer.
- $110 adult, $55 child (3–11); a 24-hour entry if you stay overnight
- Night game drive $70, lion tracking $70 (minimum four people)
- “Meet the Northern White Rhinos” $70 per adult; gates 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Lake Nakuru National Park
Intrepid’s stop between Mount Kenya and the Mara, with a morning and an afternoon drive.
- Same KWS rate as Amboseli
- Intrepid adds a Lake Naivasha boat trip the day before
Nairobi, the gateway
Most Kenya safaris start here. Intrepid lists a Nairobi National Park drive and the Karen Blixen Museum among its day-one options.
- KWS charges $80 a day for Nairobi National Park
- Arrive a day early; most tours begin with a welcome meeting
- The State Department’s Level 4 areas include Nairobi’s Eastleigh and Kibera neighborhoods
Kenya’s calendar: herds and fee seasons
Kenya’s best months are easy to name. The trick is that the reserve charges the same high rate from July right through December.
Fees per Narok County as reported by Kenyan press in July 2026, and listed the same for 2027. Herd positions from Asilia, a camp operator.
The Mara’s best wildlife months and its expensive months overlap, then the price stays high after the herds leave. November and December cost the same as September with far fewer wildebeest.
January to June is the $100 half of the year. The herds are in Tanzania then, so that’s the time for Amboseli, Samburu and Laikipia, or for a combined trip to the southern Serengeti.
Rain is part of the deal. The short rains arrive around November, per Asilia, and the State Department recalls helicopter rescues during floods in the Mara in May 2024.
Time it to the crossings
If the crossings are the point, aim for July to October, with September the safest single month for herds in the Mara. Then book a camp near the river and leave room for a second try: crossings happen when the animals decide.
Tents, lodges or a Mara bush camp: what each costs
Close to the crossings, few vehicles, a gentle price: most Kenya camps give you two of the three.
| Safari type | Your bed | A real trip | About a day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overland, under canvas | Tents at campsites; you help set up | G Adventures Kenya, Tanzania Overland & Participation Camping | ~$180* |
| Adventure small group | Hotels, lodges and safari camps (3, 2 and 4 nights) | Intrepid Kenya Safari Adventure, max 16 | ~$586 |
| Escorted group safari | Lodges and hotels; ask which | Trafalgar Wonders of Kenya; Cosmos | ~$510–$605 |
| Private vehicle and guide | Lodges, your own driver-guide | Globus East Africa Private Safari | ~$843* |
| Top camps and lodges | Bush camps, &Beyond, Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club | Tauck, A&K | ~$1,166–$1,780 |
Price follows two things in Kenya: the camp’s location and the vehicle count. Conservancy nights carry their own fee of roughly $80 to $120 a person, and fewer vehicles at each sighting is part of what you’re buying.
Ask what you’ll ride in and how many share it. Tauck’s Classic Safari uses six-passenger open-top vehicles, and Collette’s Kenya and Tanzania trip six-person vehicles.
Where the money really goes
Before you compare two quotes, ask how many nights are in a conservancy, how many are in the reserve, and how many guests share the vehicle. Those answers explain most of a $1,000-a-day gap.
A full day in the Masai Mara
This is day 9 of Intrepid’s 10-day Kenya Safari Adventure, the trip’s one full day in the reserve.
Optional balloon
Intrepid sells a hot air balloon flight with a bush breakfast as an optional extra; Tauck includes one on its Classic and Great Migration trips.
Into the reserve
A full-day 4WD safari in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, included in the trip. The reserve opens at 6 a.m.
Lunch: ask
The itinerary doesn’t say whether lunch is a picnic in the reserve or back at camp, so ask before you go.
Out of the gate
The reserve’s 12-hour ticket ends at closing time, so the day finishes back at camp.
The day before, Intrepid’s group drives in from Lake Nakuru with a stop for a cultural talk and a Maasai village visit at Loita Hills. The next morning it’s breakfast and the road back to Nairobi.
Park and conservancy fees, side by side
Kenya splits fees between the county, the national wildlife service and private conservancies. A good quote shows all three.
| Area | Adult | Child | The detail that matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Masai Mara Reserve, Jan–Jun | $100 | $50 (9–17)* | 12-hour ticket, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. |
| Masai Mara Reserve, Jul–Dec | $200 | $50 (9–17)* | Doubles exactly when the herds arrive |
| Mara conservancies | ~$80–$120 a night | ~$45–$75* | Usually bundled into the camp rate |
| Amboseli, Lake Nakuru | $90 | $45 | Per 24 hours, KWS from October 1, 2025 |
| Nairobi National Park, Tsavo | $80 | $40 | Per 24 hours, KWS |
| Samburu National Reserve | County-set | — | Ask for the current rate |
| Ol Pejeta Conservancy | $110 | $55 (3–11) | Night drive and lion tracking $70 each |
Mara fees per Narok County, as reported by Kenyan press (July 2026). * Child and conservancy figures from safari companies’ fee guides, not an official schedule. KWS rates from its October 2025 notice; Ol Pejeta from its 2026 tariff. KWS children are 5 to under 18, and 5 and under are free.
Count the reserve days
A couple doing three reserve days in September pays $1,200 in tickets alone; the same three days in March cost $600. If your camp is in a conservancy, ask how many reserve days the price includes.

Fares are for one of two travelers sharing, without international air, as listed on October 26, 2026. An asterisk marks a 2027 price taken from a US agency’s listing rather than the tour company’s own site. Trafalgar’s Wonders of Kenya price is from 2026 dates and Collette’s from its 2025 launch, so ask for 2027 fares. Intrepid’s Kenya Safari Adventure figure is from reseller listings of Intrepid’s trip.
Many companies sell Kenya as half of a two-country trip with Tanzania. That suits the migration, but it adds a border, a second entry document and a second fee system.
For Kenya alone, Intrepid’s Kenya Safari Adventure is the clearest example: four game-drive areas and the Mara in ten days. Trafalgar’s Wonders of Kenya is the escorted Classic-tier version.
What a day in Kenya costs
Kenya’s spread is as wide as Tanzania’s. The camp location sets where you land on it.
Each bar is the starting fare spread over the trip’s days, for one of two sharing, international air left out. Asterisk: agency listing. Most of these trips cross into Tanzania too. Highlighted: Intrepid’s Kenya-only trip and Tauck’s Classic Safari.
The spread is about tenfold. Camping trips run about $180 to $300 a day; escorted and adventure small groups about $510 to $700; private and premium trips $840 to $1,000; Tauck and A&K above $1,150.
The jump buys conservancy camps, fewer people per vehicle and flights between parks. Tauck includes its in-tour flights, which a cheaper quote may not.
Run your own quote through the calculator, then add the Mara tickets your fare leaves out.

Guide range from Trafalgar; camp tip box from Ker & Downey’s Kenya figure. The $30 is the eTA; add a Mara ticket ($100 or $200 a day) for any reserve day your fare leaves out. Flights and insurance aren’t included.

How many days, and the Nairobi start
Kenya trips start in Nairobi and often finish in another country. Book the flights around that.
| Plan | Length on the trips we priced | Real trips |
|---|---|---|
| Kenya only | 9–10 | Trafalgar Wonders of Kenya 9; Intrepid Kenya Safari Adventure 10 |
| Kenya plus Tanzania | 8–16 | Intrepid Serengeti Trail 8; Tauck 10 and 13; Cosmos 11; A&K 12; Globus 15 |
| Add Zanzibar | 10–19 | G Adventures overland 10; Trafalgar Premium Kenya and Tanzania with Zanzibar 19 ($13,645*) |
Nairobi is the usual gateway, and many two-country trips are one-way: Nairobi to Arusha or the reverse. Price an open-jaw ticket, into one city and home from the other.
Money moves early on safaris. Intrepid takes a $400 deposit with the balance 56 days out under its standard booking conditions; Globus and Cosmos want the balance three months ahead of any Africa departure. Book July to October dates well ahead.
Arrive the day before. Intrepid’s day 1 in Nairobi is free time with optional extras, and your eTA is tied to the flight you put on the application, so book flights first.
Kenyan clocks sit at UTC+3 all year (East Africa Time, no summer change). Florida is seven hours behind in the US summer and eight in winter; Texas is one hour further back.
The currency is the Kenyan shilling. Tips are usually in US dollars, in small, newer bills.
Pack for the small planes
A soft-sided bag is Trafalgar’s rule for East Africa safaris. On Tauck’s in-tour flights the one checked piece is a duffel weighing no more than 20 kg (44 lb), plus a small carry-on. Scheduled bush airlines set their own limits; ask for yours in writing.
The eTA, your passport and the Level 3 advisory
The paperwork is quick. The advisory is the bigger question this year, and it deserves a careful read.
US citizens don’t need a visa, but they do need an eTA before boarding. Apply at etakenya.go.ke; the official FAQ lists standard processing from $30 (Governors’ Camp quotes $34) and about three business days to process.
Apply at least three days before you fly; Governors’ Camp suggests two weeks, and allows up to three months ahead. Every traveler needs one, infants included.
The eTA is single-entry. Governors’ Camp says it can cover a return to Kenya if, in between, you visit only Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan or the DRC. Confirm that for your route.
Your passport needs six months of validity beyond arrival and two blank pages, per the State Department.
Kenya gazetted a rule in July 2026 requiring visitors to carry $50,000 of health cover, then the High Court suspended it in August pending a hearing. Check its status before you apply.
State Department: Level 3
Kenya moved to Level 3, “Reconsider travel,” on October 19, 2026, because of health risks: the CDC has an Ebola travel health notice for Kenya after outbreaks in the DRC and Uganda. Crime, kidnapping, terrorism, unrest and road safety are also listed. The Level 4 areas include Nairobi’s Eastleigh and Kibera and several northeastern and coastal counties; the Mara, Amboseli, Samburu and Laikipia aren’t among them.
The advisory also warns about safari vehicle rollovers, so wear the seatbelt, and says the Kenya Wildlife Service requires operators and lodges to carry insurance.
Health questions go to your doctor and the CDC’s Travelers’ Health page, not to us. Adding gorillas in Uganda? Read that advisory too, and our gorilla trekking guide.

Tipping and customs on a Kenya safari
Plan tips by the day and in cash. The camp box and the guide are separate envelopes.
| Person | Suggested amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Your safari guide | $10–$20 daily | Trafalgar, for Kenya and Tanzania |
| Driver | $5–$10 daily | Trafalgar |
| Camp staff box | $5–$15 a guest each day | Asilia |
| Kenya properties, pooled | $10–$15 a day | Ker & Downey |
| Guide (per couple) | ~$25 a day | Rhino Africa |
Many Kenya camps pool tips in one box for the staff, so you tip the guide separately and the camp once.
Carry crisp, low-denomination US dollars; Asilia warns that plenty of banks reject notes from before 2006.
On a Maasai village visit, follow your guide on photos and gifts, and ask before you photograph anyone.
Solo travelers, families and slower travelers
Kenya works alone or with children. Minimum ages are where the companies part ways, so confirm yours early.
Solo. Most lodge safaris add a single supplement. Intrepid rooms solo travelers with another guest of the same gender; G Adventures does that on most trips and charges no supplement. On a handful of 2026 departures across Africa, Asia and Latin America, Tauck trimmed its land supplement by as much as $600.
Families. Tauck Bridges takes children from 5 on its family safaris, and its Mara balloon needs riders of 7 or older. Collette says 13 and up for safaris, and Intrepid’s Kenya Safari Adventure says 15. Intrepid also lists a 10-day East Africa Family Safari Comfort, about $6,095 on a reseller’s site. KWS charges children under 18 half the adult rate.
Slower pace. Tauck puts the Classic Safari at 3 on its five-point activity scale: roughly 2 to 3.5 miles on foot each day. Long drives on rough roads can be the tiring part; in-tour flights cut them down, at a price.
Look elsewhere if
You want a safari with almost no early starts, or you can only travel in November or December and want the herds. In those cases, a southern Africa trip or Tanzania’s calving season, from about December, may suit you better. See African safaris by month.

Who a Kenya safari suits
Book it if
- You can travel July to October and want the river crossings
- You’d pay more for a conservancy camp with fewer vehicles, night drives or walks
- You want variety in one country: Samburu’s north, Laikipia’s conservancies and the Mara
- You’re pairing Kenya with Tanzania on one trip
- You’ve read the current advisory and are comfortable with it
Look elsewhere if
- The Level 3 advisory makes you uneasy; wait, or look at Tanzania (Level 2) or southern Africa
- You can only go in November or December and want the herds
- You want a guaranteed crossing on a fixed date
- Your budget is under about $180 a day and you won’t camp
- Your children are younger than the company allows: Tauck 5, Collette 13, Intrepid 15
Our take
Kenya is the safari for the second half of the year. July to October puts you at the Mara River with the herds, and the conservancies around the reserve sell a quieter version of the same show.
Pick reserve or conservancy first, then the month, then the company. Intrepid’s Kenya Safari Adventure covers the country at about $586 a day; Tauck and A&K buy the best camps and in-tour flights at two to three times that.
Then read the advisory, which changed a week before we published this. We’ll price two companies on identical dates and flag any departure the advisory touches.

What Kenya first-timers ask us
Is it safe to go on safari in Kenya right now?
The State Department raised Kenya to Level 3, “Reconsider travel,” on October 19, 2026, citing health (a CDC Ebola travel health notice), crime, kidnapping, terrorism, unrest and traffic safety. Its Level 4 areas are parts of Nairobi (Eastleigh and Kibera), several northeastern and coastal counties, and border areas in the north and west; the Mara, Amboseli, Samburu and Laikipia aren’t on that list. Read the full advisory, talk to your doctor, and check your insurance before you book.
Do US citizens need a visa for Kenya?
No visa, but you need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before you fly. Kenya’s official eTA portal lists standard processing from $30 (expedited adds $100) and a turnaround of about three business days. Your passport needs six months of validity beyond arrival and two blank pages, per the State Department. Children need their own eTA.
How much is the Masai Mara entry fee?
Non-resident adults pay $100 for a 12-hour ticket from January to June and $200 from July to December, and the reserve is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Conservancies around the reserve charge their own fees, listed by safari companies at roughly $80 to $120 per adult per night.
What is the difference between the Masai Mara reserve and a conservancy?
The reserve is public land run by Narok County, with day tickets and set hours. Conservancies are privately managed areas around it that limit vehicle numbers and, in some, sell night drives and walks. Mara North lists night drives and Ol Kinyei walking safaris, for example. Many trips combine a few nights of each.
When is the best time to see the river crossings in Kenya?
The Mara River crossings usually start in July, and September is the month most of the herds are in the Masai Mara, crossing both ways. In October the tail of the herd crosses back into Tanzania. Those are also the months of the $200 reserve ticket.
How much does a Kenya safari cost?
Among the 2027 departures we priced, from about $180 a day on a G Adventures overland camping trip to about $1,780 a day on A&K’s Epic Great Migration Safari, per person, sharing, before international flights. Intrepid’s 10-day Kenya Safari Adventure, with Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru and the Mara, is about $586 a day.
Does Kenya require travel health insurance for visitors?
Kenya gazetted a rule in July 2026 requiring visitors to carry at least $50,000 of health cover, but the High Court suspended it in August 2026 pending a hearing. Check the current status before you apply for your eTA, and carry medical and evacuation cover either way.
How much should I tip on a Kenya safari?
Trafalgar’s figures are $10 to $20 daily for the guide and $5 to $10 for a driver. For the camp tip box, Asilia proposes $5 to $15 per guest per day, and Ker & Downey says Kenya properties often pool tips at about $10 to $15 a day.
