The end of the navigable Nile

The Nile's turning point, Aswan

Aswan is as far south as the river ships go. The dams close the way on, so the lines turn here — and most give it two days, not one.

Plan the call

How long do you have ashore?

  1. The Unfinished Obelisk

The cracked obelisk still in its quarry; rocky, hot paths, so proper shoes.

    45 min
  2. Philae, the Temple of Isis

Taxi to the marina about 8 km south, then a motorboat across.

    120 min
  3. Back to the Corniche

Taxi back to the berth, or on to the souk from a central one.

About 3 h 15 for the day, by our planning estimate

Times are our planning estimates for a typical call, not the line’s schedule. Your daily programme sets the all-aboard.

The call

Two days at the southern end

Ships tie up at several berths on the east bank, some on the Corniche and some south of it. They often moor side by side, so you may walk through another boat to reach the quay — and no line names its Aswan berth.

Viking's first day is the dam, the souk and a felucca; its second is a Nubian village, Philae and a papyrus workshop, before Kom Ombo. AmaWaterways leaves a free morning, then an afternoon sail.

Uniworld visits the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and Philae, with tea at the Old Cataract.

Avalon is the exception, because its sailing ends here: a motorboat to Elephantine and the Aga Khan Mausoleum on day 7, then the quarries, Philae and the High Dam on day 8 before the flight to Cairo. Avalon boards in Luxor, not here.

From the ship: Only from a central berth. The Corniche and souk loop is about 3 km, around 45 minutes without stops, while southern berths need a taxi — and Philae, the High Dam and the villages all need a car or a boat.

In town

Temples, granite and the river itself

Philae, the Temple of Isis

Moved in the 1960s UNESCO Nubia campaign from its flooded original site to Agilkia, where it stands today. Open daily 7am–4pm. It's a taxi to the Philae marina, then a motorboat across. Viking, Uniworld, Avalon and Tauck include it.

A felucca under sail

Viking includes a felucca sail and Tauck a sunset one. Feluccas go when the wind lets them; motorboats keep better time.

Source 1 Source 2

A Nubian village

Viking includes a village and school visit. Gharb Soheil is the usual one, by motorboat or road; allow 3–4 hours.

Source 1 Source 2

The Unfinished Obelisk

A huge obelisk left in its granite quarry after it cracked, around the time of Hatshepsut. Open 7am–4pm; foreign adults EGP 220. The paths are rocky and hot — wear proper shoes.

The Nubia Museum

Opened in 1997 as part of the UNESCO salvage of Nubia's monuments, with three floors and a garden. Daily 9am–5pm, plus 6–9pm on Thursday and Friday; foreign adults EGP 400. No line includes it, which makes it the best independent hour in town.

Source

Elephantine and the Nilometer

Avalon goes by motorboat to Elephantine, the Nilometer and the Aga Khan Mausoleum. Allow 2–3 hours from the Corniche, on dusty, uneven paths.

Beyond the town

Abu Simbel and the evening

Abu Simbel

Ramesses II's rock-cut temple, from about 1264 BC, on Lake Nasser beyond the dams. It's never a river call: Viking, Uniworld and Avalon sell it as an option, and Tauck flies you on a private charter. By road the round trip takes 10–12 hours. Open 6am–5pm; foreign adults EGP 750, or EGP 1,200 on 22 February and 22 October, the sun-festival days when light reaches the inner sanctuary.

Philae and the High Dam together

If your line does only one of them, a 3 hr 45 min half day covers both.

Philae's sound and light show

Avalon sells it as an evening option. Ask your cruise manager for the night's start time.

Extra days, booked ahead

Things to do in Aswan

Aswan's best independent day is a long one. These three cover the gaps lines leave.

  • Abu Simbel private full day from Aswan8–10 hours. A private car instead of a coach, if your line doesn't fly you.
  • Philae Temple and Aswan High Dam half day3 hr 45 min. For the one your line skips.
  • Aswan to Luxor by road via Kom Ombo and Edfu5–7 hours. Only if you're joining or leaving a ship off-schedule.

Eat and drink

Tea, the souk and a Nubian table

Tea on the Old Cataract terrace

The 1899 hotel above the First Cataract, where Agatha Christie is said to have written Death on the Nile. Uniworld includes tea here; on another line, ask whether it can be added.

Source 1 Source 2

The souk

Viking gives time to browse it. From a central berth, it's a walk along the Corniche.

A Nubian home

Viking's Nubian village visit is the line's version. Some local tours add a stop with a family on Soheil Island.

When

Aswan is the hottest stop on the river. The crowds come December to February, the months from October to April suit a day of granite and open sky, and a summer afternoon here belongs to the pool. Philae and the Unfinished Obelisk close at 4pm, so plan the hot sites for the morning.

Quick answers

Aswan on a river cruise: questions

Do I board or leave the ship in Aswan?

On most lines, neither — Viking, AmaWaterways and Uniworld turn here and sail back to Luxor. Avalon ends its sailing in Aswan and flies you to Cairo.

Is Abu Simbel worth the long day?

For most people, yes. Go by air if your line offers it; the road takes 3–4 hours each way. Check whether your date falls on a sun-festival day, when entry costs more.

Can I walk into town from the ship?

From a central Corniche berth, yes. From a southern berth, take a taxi and agree the fare and waiting time first. Either way, be back on the waterfront at least an hour before all-aboard.

Felucca or motorboat?

Felucca for the experience, motorboat for the schedule. If your line includes a felucca, keep the motorboat for Philae and Elephantine.
