Lisbon

Lisbon runs more than one cruise quay, and the walk you get depends on which one the port gives your ship. The Lisbon Cruise Terminal at Jardim do Tabaco sits on Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, next to Santa Apolónia station and below Alfama — step off and you’re in the old city. Alcântara, out by the 25 de Abril bridge, is a different morning: a taxi, train or tram before anything starts. And Lisbon is a turnaround port as much as a port of call, not a quick stop on the way somewhere else.

Port type
Docked — Jardim do Tabaco (the main Lisbon Cruise Terminal) or the smaller Santa Apolónia terminal next door, or Alcântara out west
Walkability
Yes from Jardim do Tabaco, into Alfama and the Baixa — not practical from Alcântara
Excursion dependence
Low for the old city, moderate for Belém, higher for Sintra on a short call
Authority
Port of Lisbon (APL); terminal run by Lisbon Cruise Port

Lisbon in brief

Lisbon is a capital city with a river port in the middle of it, not a resort town built around a pier.

That’s good news for a port day. It also means the first question is geographic — where on the Tagus your ship actually ties up.

Most calls use the Lisbon Cruise Terminal at Jardim do Tabaco, according to secondary port guides. Visit Lisboa says the operator, Lisbon Cruise Port, runs two passenger terminals there on Avenida Infante Dom Henrique: Santa Apolónia and Jardim do Tabaco.

The newer building opened in November 2017. It has a terrace with a 360-degree view, a duty-free shop and a guest information desk, per the same listing.

Holland America’s own Lisbon page says the terminal connects to Santa Apolónia railway station. That puts the metro, the train and Alfama a short walk from the gangway.

The other quay area is Alcântara, which includes the neighbouring Rocha Conde de Óbidos quay, out west near the 25 de Abril bridge.

The Port of Lisbon’s own headquarters sit there, at the Gare Marítima de Alcântara. Secondary port guides describe it as handling smaller ships or overflow — and as too far from the centre to walk sensibly.

The port assigns the berth. You don’t pick it, and a guide waiting at the wrong quay is an easy way to lose the first half hour — so confirm it with your line before you plan anything with a start time, whether that’s a tour, a guide or a Belém slot.

Then there’s the turnaround question.

Lisbon is a full embarkation and disembarkation port, not just a waypoint. Port of Lisbon figures reported by MedCruise put turnaround passengers at about 28 percent of all cruise traffic from January to August 2026.

If your sailing starts or ends here, the hotel and airport pages linked below matter more than this one. If it’s a mid-route call, this is the right page — keep reading.

The free list is long: Alfama’s lanes, the Baixa grid and Praça do Comércio are all walkable from the main terminal.

Belém, with Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, is about 7 km west and needs a ride. Sintra is a train trip of roughly 40 minutes each way from Rossio.

Which of those earns a paid tour, and which you can do yourself on a transit card, is the job of our Lisbon shore excursion guide.

On foot from the ship

Main Terminal
Lisbon Cruise Terminal, Jardim do Tabaco

Av. Infante Dom Henrique, beside Santa Apolónia station and below Alfama. Lisbon Cruise Port runs the Santa Apolónia and Jardim do Tabaco terminals here; the newer building opened in November 2017.

Second Quay Area
Alcântara and Rocha Conde de Óbidos

West, near the 25 de Abril bridge. Secondary guides put it roughly 2.5 to 4.8 km (about 1.5 to 3 miles) from the centre, and nobody sensible walks it. The port publishes no passenger-facing figure we could read.

∼5–10 min
Main terminal to Alfama, on foot

A secondary port guide’s estimate, updated May 2026, with Praça do Comércio and the Baixa at about 15 to 20 minutes. Our estimate is that you should add time for the gradient if you’re heading up into Alfama.

∼7 km
Main terminal to Belém

About 4.3 miles west along the river. The metro doesn’t reach Belém, so it’s a tram, a taxi or a ride app — or a tour that bundles the transfer.

Closed Mondays
Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower

Both open 9:30 to 17:30 with last entry at 17:00, per Visit Lisboa, and both close on Mondays and a handful of holidays. A Monday call changes the Belém plan entirely.

220 calls
January–August 2026, Port of Lisbon

Port of Lisbon figures reported by MedCruise: 220 cruise calls and about 448,000 passengers in the first eight months of 2026, with turnaround traffic at roughly 28 percent of the total.

03

Alfama, the Baixa and the ride to Belém

Alfama The Baixa Praça do Comércio Santa Apolónia station Tram 28 Rossio station (trains to Sintra) Jerónimos Monastery (Belém) Belém Tower Sintra (about 40 min by train)

From the Jardim do Tabaco terminal, Alfama, the Baixa and Praça do Comércio are on foot, and tram 28 and Rossio station are a short walk or a metro hop beyond them. Belém needs a ride of about 7 km. From Alcântara, everything on this list starts with a taxi, a tram or a train — budget that first.

04

Which sailings call here

Lisbon sits on spring and autumn repositioning routes between the Mediterranean, Northern Europe and the Atlantic islands, and plenty of those sailings start or end here. Port of Lisbon figures reported by MedCruise show 220 calls from January to August 2026, with 33 in August alone. A third-party schedule for October 2026 lists Celebrity, Norwegian, Holland America, Royal Caribbean and MSC among a long roster of lines. For how Lisbon fits the wider route, see our Transatlantic & Repositioning Cruises guide. Starting or ending your cruise here? Our Lisbon embarkation guide, Lisbon pre-cruise hotels and Lisbon airport transfers pages cover that side. Which tours earn their fare on a call is on our Lisbon shore excursion guide.

Practical notes

Current as of October 19, 2026 Review periodically

Start with the quay — the whole day hangs on it.

At Jardim do Tabaco (the main Lisbon Cruise Terminal) or the smaller Santa Apolónia terminal next door, you’re at the foot of Alfama with Santa Apolónia station next door, per Holland America’s port page.

At Alcântara or Rocha Conde de Óbidos, you’re out by the bridge. A secondary guide notes the Cascais-line train from Cais do Sodré to Alcântara-Mar takes about four or five minutes, and taxis are plentiful.

The Port of Lisbon publishes a monthly forecast of cruise arrivals online, per Portugal’s government services portal. Your line’s app is the quicker check on the day.

Taxis and ride apps are straightforward — with one rule worth following.

The US State Department advises using taxis from the official queue or kiosk, and checking that a rideshare car matches the one in the app. Holland America notes Uber is readily available.

No published fare exists for terminal-to-Belém by taxi in the sources we checked, so none is printed here. Holland America’s airport-to-terminal reference is about €20, approximate — a different journey, quoted only so you know the scale.

Pickpocketing is the realistic risk here, not anything dramatic.

The State Department rates Portugal Level 1, exercise normal precautions, as of its December 23, 2025 advisory. It flags pickpocketing and purse snatching as common at tourist sites, restaurants and on public transport, and says to avoid standing near transit doors.

Tram 28 is the obvious place to apply that advice — bags zipped and in front of you.

Entry rules for US passport holders are simple — for now.

No visa is needed for stays of 90 days or less, and the State Department wants your passport valid for three months beyond your departure date. Portugal’s currency is the euro.

The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully running since April 10, 2026. It replaces passport stamps for non-EU visitors with a photo and fingerprints at the first Schengen border. How your line handles it on a port call is up to the line, so ask before you sail.

ETIAS hasn’t launched and isn’t needed yet. The EU has promised at least six months’ notice, and no start date had been announced when we checked on October 19, 2026.

Belém’s two big monuments run on timed slots now.

Belém Tower reopened on May 27, 2026, after roughly a year of restoration, with entry capped at 60 people every half hour, per Lusa. Visit Lisboa says a date-and-time booking is needed even with a Lisboa Card.

Monday is the day to avoid — Jerónimos and the tower both close on Mondays, plus January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1, June 13 and December 25.

Lisbon FAQ

Where do cruise ships dock in Lisbon?

Most use the Lisbon Cruise Terminal at Jardim do Tabaco, secondary port guides say, on Avenida Infante Dom Henrique beside Santa Apolónia station and below Alfama. Lisbon Cruise Port runs the Santa Apolónia and Jardim do Tabaco terminals there, per Visit Lisboa.

Some ships go to Alcântara or the neighbouring Rocha Conde de Óbidos quay, west near the 25 de Abril bridge. The port assigns the berth, so check with your line.

Can I walk into Lisbon from the ship?

From the Jardim do Tabaco terminal, yes. A secondary port guide estimates about 5 to 10 minutes to Alfama and 15 to 20 to Praça do Comércio.

From Alcântara, not sensibly — secondary guides put it roughly 2.5 to 4.8 km out. Take a taxi, a ride app or the Cascais-line train from Alcântara-Mar.

How far is Belém from the cruise terminal?

About 7 km (roughly 4.3 miles) west of the Jardim do Tabaco terminal, per a secondary port guide. The metro doesn’t go there, so plan on a tram, a taxi, a ride app or a tour.

Are Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower open on Mondays?

No. Visit Lisboa lists both as closed on Mondays, and on January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1, June 13 and December 25.

Otherwise they open 9:30 to 17:30, last entry 17:00. Belém Tower reopened on May 27, 2026, after restoration, and now admits visitors in timed half-hour slots.

Is Lisbon a start or end port, or just a stop?

Both. Port of Lisbon figures reported by MedCruise put turnaround passengers at roughly 28 percent of the January–August 2026 total.

Check how your itinerary treats it. If your cruise starts or ends here, the Lisbon embarkation guide is the page you want.

Do US citizens need ETIAS or a visa for Lisbon?

No visa for stays of 90 days or less, per the State Department. ETIAS hasn’t launched and isn’t needed yet. The EU has promised at least six months’ notice, and no start date had been announced when we checked on October 19, 2026.

The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully running since April 10, 2026. It replaces passport stamps for non-EU visitors with a photo and fingerprints at the first Schengen border. Ask your line how it handles that on a port call.

Is Lisbon safe for a port day?

The State Department rates Portugal Level 1, exercise normal precautions. Its specific warning is petty theft: pickpocketing and purse snatching at tourist sites, restaurants and on public transport.

Stay away from tram and train doors in a crowd, and use taxis from an official rank or a ride app whose car matches the booking.

How do I check which quay my ship is using?

The Port of Lisbon publishes a monthly cruise-arrival forecast online, per Portugal’s government services portal. Closer to the day, guest services and your line’s app are the faster answer.

If you’ve booked a private guide, send them the quay name, not just “the cruise terminal.”
