Easter Island (Hanga Roa) Shore Excursions: Moai, the Park Ticket and a Tender That May Not Run

A day on Rapa Nui is decided by two things you do not control: the swell and the park’s guide rule. Pick a tour that covers the second and has a clear refund for the first. The quarry and the platform at Tongariki are the sights to build around.

Easter Island in 30 seconds: book the guide, read the refund

Known for
The moai, the quarry at Rano Raraku, the fifteen restored statues of Ahu Tongariki, Orongo on the Rano Kau crater rim and Anakena Beach.
Strongest excursion styles
The ship for the full-island day and the short samplers, small-group operators for a tighter group — and the town on foot as the fallback.
Booking on your own
Possible, but the guide rule and the tender timing make it harder than at most ports. Check refunds before you pay, not after the swell picks up.
The one thing to know
The park ticket is US$100 for international adults, per GoChile, and it isn’t part of every tour price — ask before you book, not after.
02

Quick picks for an Easter Island port day

Rapa Nui rewards a plan built for delays. The strongest picks bundle the guide, settle the park ticket question and fit inside a call that could be shortened.

03

Easter Island excursions, by how much of the island they cover

Each option below is judged on what it adds to the day and what it risks if the swell turns.

Some tours stay near town while others head east to the quarry and the long platform — and one asks you to stay overnight.

The landing, the walk and the entry rules are on our Easter Island cruise port guide. Starting from the mainland? Our Valparaíso shore excursion guide covers the usual start of the crossing.

On your own · the no-fare half day

Hanga Roa town and Ahu Tahai on foot

  • Town waterfront, church and craft market
  • Ahu Tahai north of the center
  • No tour fare
  • Good fallback if tours are cancelled

If the tenders run late or you have no tour, the town itself is a fair half day. The waterfront, the church, the shops and the craft market sit close to the harbor, and you can cover them without a vehicle.

Ahu Tahai lies north of the center. One operator guide lists Tahai, the town and Anakena Beach as places you can visit without an accredited guide, but we could not confirm that with the park, so treat it as a question to ask.

This is not the quarry or the long platform at Tongariki — those need a vehicle, a park ticket and a guide.

Time commitment
No duration is published for a self-guided visit. Allow the tender ride and the walk from the landing on top.
Getting there
On foot from the landing. Sources put the walk to the center at under 15 minutes or at roughly 20 to 30 minutes from Hanga Piko.
Suits
Slow walkers, budget travelers and anyone whose tour has been cancelled.
Ship or independent
Independent — there is no tour to book, just a walk to plan.

Why it's worth considering

It costs very little and survives a late tender — you are already in town, not waiting on a van.

You see Hanga Roa as a place, not a gateway to the sites.

The catch

Tahai is one small ahu, and the park’s big sites stay out of reach without a guide and a vehicle.

No source we read gives the walk from the landing to Tahai, so ask a local or the ship’s port team before you set out.

Verify before you book

  • Whether Tahai needs a park ticket or a guide on your date
  • Which landing your ship is using and how far it sits from town

Ship tour · the full-island day

The ship’s full-day highlights tour

  • Ship-run, guide included
  • Quarry, platform, beach and more
  • Duration varies by line
  • Park ticket may be extra

The standard day out of Hanga Roa is a guided loop of the main sites — sold by the ship, with the guide the park demands built in. Princess lists “Best of Easter Island” as a full-day tour, and Holland America sells its own island excursions.

The appeal is the paperwork: the line supplies the guide the park requires, the vehicle and the return to the tender. The park ticket may or may not be in the price — ask.

Princess prints no duration for it. Holland America’s Easter Island pages showed “Information Not Currently Available” for time, price and activity level on the day we checked.

Time commitment
Not published by the lines. Expect most of the call; that is our guess, not a figure.
Getting there
The line’s vehicle from the tender landing, with a guide.
Suits
First-timers who want the headline sites and no logistics.
Ship or independent
Ship — the line, not an outside operator, owns the problem if the tenders stop.

Why it's worth considering

One booking covers the guide, the vehicle and the timing against the last tender.

It is a simple way to reach the east-coast sites on a call that may be shortened.

The catch

A full day on a tender call is a gamble. If the swell cuts the landing, check what your line refunds.

Vehicles on this island are often vans or four-wheel-drive vehicles without lifts, which matters for anyone with limited mobility.

Verify before you book

  • Duration, price and whether the park ticket is included
  • The refund rule if the tenders do not run

Ship tour · the short sampler

Ahu Tahai and Rano Raraku in about three hours

  • 3 hours on Princess’s page
  • Rano Raraku about 11 miles (18 km) away
  • About 400 moai at the quarry
  • Guide required

Princess lists “Ahu Tahai & Rano Raraku” as a three-hour tour. It pairs a small ahu near town with the quarry where the statues were carved.

Rano Raraku is the sight to hold on to. About 400 moai remain there in various stages of carving, and the drive out takes roughly 25 minutes.

It does not include Tongariki’s fifteen standing moai, so the postcard view is left for the full-day tour.

Time commitment
About 3 hours on Princess’s page, before the tender ride.
Getting there
Ship vehicle from the landing. The quarry is about 11 miles (18 km) from town.
Suits
Short calls and anyone who wants the quarry without a whole day.
Ship or independent
Ship. A private guide can copy the route, but the clock is tighter.

Why it's worth considering

It puts the quarry, the strongest sight for many visitors, inside a half-day.

Three hours leaves slack if the tenders start late.

The catch

Rano Raraku allows one entry per park ticket, so you cannot come back on another day.

The nearest toilets and food for Tongariki are at Rano Raraku, per Rapa Nui Travel Guide, so use them there.

Verify before you book

  • That the tour includes the park ticket
  • Whether Ahu Tahai is a stop or a drive-by

Ship tour · crater rim and inland platform

Orongo village and Ahu Akivi

  • A 3-hour sampler
  • Orongo on the Rano Kau crater rim
  • One entry per ticket at Orongo
  • Guide required

Princess lists “Orongo Village & Ahu Akivi” at three hours. Orongo is the ceremonial village on the rim of the Rano Kau crater, and Ahu Akivi is an inland platform.

It is the quieter counterpoint to the east coast: you see the island from above, and a different side of its culture, with fewer moai to count.

Holland America also lists “Ancient Cultures of Easter Island”. No duration or price showed on the page when we checked.

Time commitment
Roughly 3 hours, as Princess lists it.
Getting there
Ship vehicle from the landing, with a guide.
Suits
Repeat visitors, or anyone pairing it with a separate east-coast tour.
Ship or independent
Ship. Orongo needs a guide and a ticket that allows one entry.

Why it's worth considering

It gives you a view of the island that the quarry tours skip.

Three hours fits a call with a late start.

The catch

Our guess is the rim is exposed to wind; the weather can change within hours.

It will not satisfy anyone who came mainly for rows of statues.

Verify before you book

  • Whether the park ticket is included
  • The activity level for your date

Ship tour · moai and a meal

Moai and an umu feast

  • 5 hours at Princess
  • Earth-oven meal
  • Holland America lists a similar tour
  • Guide required

Princess lists “Ultimate Easter Island Moai & Umu Feast” at five hours, and Holland America lists “Easter Island Moai & Umu Feast” as well. The umu is a traditional earth-oven meal.

It is the middle path between the three-hour samplers and a full day — sites and lunch in one booking, not two.

Holland America’s page says meals are not included, even with “feast” in the title. Ask what the meal covers.

Time commitment
About 5 hours at Princess; Holland America prints no duration.
Getting there
Ship vehicle and guide from the landing.
Suits
Couples and families who want a sit-down meal in the day.
Ship or independent
Ship. Lunch timing is easier when the line owns the schedule.

Why it's worth considering

Food and sites in one plan, with no hunting for a restaurant.

Five hours leaves room for a delay at the landing.

The catch

Which sites you reach is not spelled out in the listings we read.

It can feel padded if the moai are what you came for.

Verify before you book

  • Which sites are included
  • What the meal includes, given the “meals not included” line on the Holland America page

Independent · small group or private

A private or small-group guide, booked outside the ship

  • 6½ to 8 hours on two listings
  • From $160 to $379 per person
  • Pier pickup on some listings
  • Park ticket separate

Outside operators sell small-group days timed to the tenders. One listing for cruise passengers runs 6½ hours, from $379 per person, with up to eight guests and pier pickup built around tender times.

Viator lists a separate “Rapa Nui Tour for Cruise Passengers” from $280. Its other full-day listing says it is not suitable for cruise passengers while also offering pier transfers, so read the fine print.

An operator selling tours for Holland America’s February 2026 call listed US$160 per person, with no duration printed, so check what it charges now. It uses a vehicle of 12 to 16 seats and drops you back at least an hour before the last tender.

Time commitment
About 6½ to 8 hours on the listings we read.
Getting there
Pier pickup on the cruise-passenger listings, hotel pickup on others — so check which you are buying.
Suits
Travelers who want a smaller group than a ship tour, which may run larger.
Ship or independent
Independent. Read the cancellation terms before the call.

Why it's worth considering

Smaller groups may mean more time at each site; one listing caps at 8 guests, another at 16.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before is advertised on one listing.

The catch

The park ticket, US$100 per adult, is extra on the listings we read.

One operator keeps half the fare when a tour can’t run. Another offers free cancellation.

Verify before you book

  • Where and when the guide meets the tender
  • What happens to your money if the landing is cancelled

Ship tour · the long way

The overnight adventure ashore

  • 2 days, 1 night
  • From $3,099 (single occupancy)
  • Strenuous
  • Hotel included

Holland America sells “The Wonders of Easter Island Overnight Adventure”. Day one covers Ahu Akivi, lunch in Hanga Roa, Orongo and Rano Kau, then a hotel check-in and sunset at Ahu Tahai.

Day two starts early with sunrise at Ahu Tongariki, then Rano Raraku, Te Pito Kura and Anakena Beach, a barbecue lunch and the return to the ship.

It works on a call long enough to leave the ship overnight — and the page rates it strenuous and not wheelchair accessible.

Time commitment
Two days and one night, per the Holland America listing.
Getting there
Guided vehicle from the landing, hotel stay included.
Suits
Serious moai fans on a long enough call.
Ship or independent
Ship. It is non-refundable inside 95 days of the call.

Why it's worth considering

Sunrise at Tongariki is on the itinerary, which the same-day tours we read don’t list.

The hotel stay lets you see the island at dawn and dusk.

The catch

Non-refundable inside 95 days is a heavy commitment on a port where tenders can fail.

The listing does not mention the park ticket or what the meals include. Few vendors on the island accept cards.

Verify before you book

  • Whether the park ticket is included
  • Your call length and when the ship will actually be in port
04

Easter Island with the ship or on your own

The guide rule shapes everything

The park requires an accredited guide at most sites. That removes the usual do-it-yourself option, and a rental car does not change it.

So the real choice is whose guide, not whether to have one.

The ship wins on risk

If the tenders cannot run, a ship tour is the line’s to cancel, so ask what it refunds. An outside operator may keep part of your money or refund the lot, so the terms matter more than the price.

On a call that might be shortened, the ship’s tour is the likelier booking to come with a clear refund. Ask before you buy.

Independent wins on group size

Small-group operators list caps of 8 guests on one listing and 16 on another, and we found no group size for the ship tours.

Read the pier pickup details and the refund terms before you trust one with your day.

Short answer

Build the day around Rano Raraku. On a short call, take the three-hour Tahai and Rano Raraku tour with the ship. On a full call, take the line’s highlights day, or a small-group operator with clear refund terms. Keep the town walk as your fallback, and ask about the park ticket each time you book.

05

What we’d skip at Easter Island

A tour with no refund rule

Swell can prevent a landing, and one small operator keeps half the fare when a tour can’t run. Read the terms before you pay — the refund, not the discount, is the real price.

Paying for the park ticket twice

The ticket is US$100 for international adults and valid for 10 consecutive days, per GoChile. Some tours include it and some do not — ask in writing.

Counting on a rental car

A vehicle does not get you into the main sites — entry needs an accredited guide, or a tour that supplies one.

Squeezing in every site

Rano Raraku and Orongo allow one entry per ticket, and the east coast is a drive. Choose the sights that matter to you, not the whole list.

A tight return to the tender

CruisePorts.co suggests being back at least 90 minutes before the last tender, while an operator promises an hour. Give yourself the longer margin — a rushed return is a poor trade for one more stop.

Relying on cards

Larger hotels and tour companies take Visa and MasterCard, but markets and small shops want cash — and ATMs in town can be unreliable.

06

Easter Island logistics: tenders, tickets and money

From the anchorage to the sights

Ships anchor off Hanga Roa and tender guests in, usually to Hanga Piko, with the main harbor as the alternative. The town center is a walk from either — sources say roughly 15 to 30 minutes.

Rano Raraku is about 11 miles (18 km) out and Ahu Tongariki about 12 miles (20 km) — and the park, not the road, sets the rules.

The park ticket and guide

Rapa Nui National Park runs on a ticket valid for 10 consecutive days. GoChile reports the Ma’u Henua announcement behind the US$100 adult fare, and we could not read the park’s own page, so confirm the figure for your date.

Most sites need a guide accredited by Ma’u Henua. Tongariki has no toilets or food on site, and the nearest are at Rano Raraku.

Calls and timing

Schedules we checked list Holland America, Seabourn, Silversea, Lindblad, Crystal, MSC and Phoenix Reisen ships between October 2026 and April 2027.

Check your own ship’s arrival and all-aboard times — several calls on the schedule run overnight.

07

Which Easter Island plan fits you

First-time visitor

Take the ship’s full-day highlights tour. It covers the guide and the timing, and you get the signature sites.

The ship’s highlights day →

Repeat visitors

A small group, or a different side of the island, beats the standard loop the second time.

A private guide →

Budget-conscious

Walk the town and Tahai for no fare at all. If you want a tour, a small-group listing starts at $160 on one Holland America call.

Hanga Roa town and Tahai →

Minimal stress

Let the line own the schedule and the refund — the highlights day is the simplest booking, not the lowest fare.

The ship’s highlights day →

Limited mobility

Vehicles are often vans or four-wheel-drive without lifts, and the sites have uneven ground — so stay in town, or ask your line about accessibility.

Easter Island shore excursion questions

Do I need a shore excursion at Easter Island?

Not strictly, since the town is walkable — but the big sites need an accredited guide, so most visitors book a tour.

Is the Rapa Nui park ticket included in tours?

Sometimes, and the Princess and Holland America listings we read do not say. One small-group listing says it is not included, and another operator collects US$100 in cash at the landing — so ask before you pay.

How long is the Rano Raraku tour?

Princess lists Ahu Tahai and Rano Raraku at about three hours. The drive to the quarry is about 25 minutes each way.

What if the tenders are cancelled?

You stay on the ship — and the refund depends on who sold the tour. Ask your line what it returns, and read an outside operator’s terms, since one keeps half.

Can I rent a car and see the moai myself?

You can rent one, but a vehicle does not satisfy the park’s guide rule. Entry to most sites needs an accredited guide.

Is there a tour with lunch?

Princess lists a five-hour moai and umu feast tour, and Holland America lists a similar one. Check what the meal covers.

Is the overnight excursion worth it?

It suits serious moai fans on a long call. It costs from $3,099 in single occupancy on Holland America, and it is non-refundable inside 95 days.

What is the weather like for a visit?

Highs run roughly 80 to 82°F from January to March, and rain falls year-round. Weather can change within hours.
